    That cigar smoking head is definitely Sergeant Major Johnson. I am also so gonna get Ooh Rah, those upcoming power suits and Space-Nam for Xenos Rampant.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah, that cigar is totally Apone from Aliens. Then again, I thought the Halo guy was a bit of an homage to Apone as it was.
      My thinking is going towards trying Xenos Rampant as well with these guys. Hopefully I'll get a chance to build some Harvesters and see how those turn out, as I bet they'd be perfect for it too.

      @@ObscuritiesinMiniature I have gotten some Victorian Science fiction minis from Dragon Bait Miniatures and the defunct Hinterland Miniatures. My plan is to have them fight Kroot and the lizard men from Wargames Atlantic. I'd probably use Xenos Rampant for that as well or another one called GASLIGHT.

    The sculpts and posing are great in this, they're good enough to give GW a run for their money. And they look like they're scaled right too for GW games.

      I hope it works well enough for both Wargames Atlantic and Reptilian Overlords that they consider doing a subsequent set further down the line. It's a fun kit!

    These are my next purchase, just got some of the Ooh Rahs last week. I also wish they were a bit larger, they'd be perfect Ogryns if they were about 50% bigger. Might need to find an etsy seller willing to resize the STLs.
    As for the 1-foot running poses, I stopped minding them when I found micro screws. Bought a bunch of M1x6 phillips head screws (1mm wide, 6mm long) off ebay, they're fairly cheap. Just glue the model down normally, drill up into the foot from underneath with a pin vise drive a microscrew into the foot from below. It's actually even easier than trying to line up 2 holes to pin with a brass rod and is also much much MUCH stronger than a brass rod pin

    If my gut urge is to buy the box set for that price with 20 models rather than 3D print similar ones just shows what a fantastic deal it is for me.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can literally print these guys direct from Reptilian Overlords, with an assortment of extra character models too!
      My thing with 3D printing is I'm very much over printing all the buildable pieces for anything more than a 3 man team. It is too tedious having to dork around removing supports off every individual arm, hand, and ammo pouch!
      I'm thankful that WGA's 3D files are often available as a single piece in addition the the usual assortment of parts to build the figures with.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ObscuritiesinMiniature That's very much why, even with 3d printers having definite strengths, I like there to be hard plastic options on the market. Even if it's technically cheaper (even if you factor the initial cost of buying a printer), you're also effectively "paying" in the amount of extra labor you're signing up for. Especially if you're trying to print a large number of models.
      Whereas with a plastic kit, you're paying a little extra (compared to home 3D printing) in exchange for convenience. A good rule of thumb might be to look at how many hours of labor you do printing a number of models, compared to the same number of models in a hard plastic kit. Then translate those labor hours into minimum wage. If, over the course of multiple print batches, you spend more hours dealing with 3d prints than the plastic kit would cost, the latter may be more "cost-effective" overall.

    Great quality minis, covering the Catachan and custom regiment options when GW doesn't. Just remember to clean off the flecks of plastic with your hobby knife, there tends to be some thin plastic leftovers around the fingers and on a couple of the heads. I'd say they're the best looking guys wargames atlantic has put out, just for better definition and all the special weapons options.
    The one nitpick I have is that I wish they had some loose weapons and pistol variants on sprues. That's kind of it.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always have to go back over things after filming- I often don't catch all the messy sprue scars when initially building them. Maybe I'm in a hurry, maybe the lighting is bad, maybe it's not as noticeable at the time.
      I do agree that there's always room for extra bits- maybe Reptilian Overlords will send some spare weapon files over to WGA to include on their Tribes subscription?

  • @TheNeonCaster
    @TheNeonCaster ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It’s really interesting comparing these wargame atlantic sprues to the likes of north star minis frost/stargrave sprues. They both hit a similar scale (and are pretty cross-compatible) but wargame atlantic never really includes any ‘characterful’ bits. I suppose it’s the difference between army and skirmish gaming design philosophy.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feel the Northstar stuff tends to be a little smaller/ more heroic in its scaling than a lot of the WGA kits, but I'm in absolute agreement about their excellent cross compatibility.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose them being cross-compatible helps this somewhat.

  • @alessiodecarolis
    @alessiodecarolis ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice boxed set, also if they're a "little" exaggerated in the arms, pity that the weapons are attached to the arms. For backpacks there are some options, either Pig Iron and Anvil Industry have various gear to add to the figures.

  • @Bluecho4
    @Bluecho4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    With the lower model count and higher price, the Space Nam kit is definitely one of the less cost effective kits Wargames Atlantic offers. That said, it's STILL a better value than the GW kit by a wide margin, without even getting into aesthetics. Bulk discounts make it an even bigger steal.
    Moreover, unlike the GW kit, the Space Nam kit gives you way more weapon options. Ironically, this makes the kit _overqualified_ for the recently released Imperial Guard rules for Catachan Squads. Given that the "Catachan Squad" unit is limited to the loadout available in the GW kit (so, only Flamers). But you can still run them as normal Infantry Squads. Which you'd probably want to do anyway, since the Catachan Squad is overcosted in points for what you get from them.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice to get an up to date perspective on how this kit works in current 40k!

  • @lazyvipurr4698
    @lazyvipurr4698 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hows having 20 a downside? You can have two squads of Catachan fighters from one. For Catachan in box you get one backpack for every 5 models, this box has one for every 4.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's more me being spoiled with Wargames Atlantic's quite robust historical offerings, which usually have larger quantities of troops.

    7:20 if it's some kind of durability concern, just drill the foot and the base and run a wire through, curling it so it fits under the base in a coil. Helps weight it for better stability too.

    • @ObscuritiesinMiniature
      @ObscuritiesinMiniature  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could do that, but that's a bit more work for a grunt than I usually feel like doing! Granted, if I was going to make him a bit more unique I probably would, but after having done dozens of dainty Kingdom Death girls and their improbably small contact points, my patience for such is very thin.

      There's a knife and a machete at least. Good point on the chain sword though. I'd imagine most guard players have a few spares laying around!
      I don't. I never really collected much in the way of Guard- I had the original plastic box from WAY back in the day, but I don't think that had any swords, did it? I know it had those long skinny barreled lasguns and some heavy cannons.

    • @bopaintsminis
      @bopaintsminis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ObscuritiesinMiniature Sure, I can always kit-bash a plastic kit, but one laspistol and chainsword arm per ten minis (or per sprue if they must) would go to getting one squad leader per ten minis, especially considering the tenth ed. codex.

      At least it's not the Harvesters. Try gluing those tiny contact points to the base. Getting those on a 25mm base would be hard enough even without that.
      For the Space Nam running models, I might suggest pinning the leg to the base. Maybe while stepping on some styrene or hard plastic basing material, so there's more material to embed the pin in.

    What size bases do you use for this miniatures?

      Space Nam are a tight fit on the 25s so I'd suggest 32s just to be on the safe side.
