Ive never played a dragon quest game but I hope this movie along with detective pikachu can finally prove that video game movies can be good or at least passable
Usually we don't count Japanese animated movies since there are plenty of good ones out there. What needs to be proven is that we can get a good Hollywood blockbuster based on a video game.
They always could have been good, problem is Hollywood. You have producers who meddle in regards to what the film should be about rather than stick to source material, same with certain writers that think they know whats best and wish to do their own take (having not been a fan of the original source material but they say they are). If video game movies become popularize, main stream will surely mess it up in the long run, but I feel we could get alot of good stuff out before that.
Hosea Davit No, I know it. Just don't watch it. Lots of people take being an otaku to a whole next level. I just watch what I love, and that's it. I've no desire to watch every anime ever created and make sure I watch every new episode of every anime. That's nuts. + I'm 30. The only kids anime I still watch is Pokémon. For nostalgic reasons. And Digimon if a new one releases, same reasons. All others I've completely outgrown. So most of what I watch are young adults anime like One Piece etc I literally watch like 5 different anime series at this point in an entire week. Some take it too far. Some do it at their own pace

Ratzmoonmopes race has nothing to do with it you loon, different studios and cultures are just more familiar with using different styles, and western animation is more typically associated with 3D animation.
Yea lots of Japanese fans are pissed about it. They believe it's pandering to the west to try and make more money globally and would have much preferred if they stuck closer to Toriyama's style, with many finding it humorous that with DBZ being the global phenomenon that it is, that they'd make this stylistic choice.
My heart broke when I watch the movie.... The message is very sincere. I hope hackers and viruses will never ruin any game again. I really appreciate the effort of every game developer out there!! You Keep motivated guys.. 😭

I always felt like Dragon Quest V's plot sounded like what you'd see in a movie... this will definitely be a fun movie to watch. Also that Slime... I wanna pet it.
Two things, 1) are you paying attention Hollywood? *THAT'S* what a videogame movie should look like. 2) did the hero get an actual name? Every avatar deserves a name.
OMFG!! I just finished watching this movie. It is so freaking good. I cried many times. The main character is so cool also he's son. I am so shook after watching this movie. I can't believe i would love it so freaking much. 💖💖💖😘 Btw the movie doesn't have any dull moments. The animation is so beautiful. The movie is almost 2 hours but it feels so short because i freaking want more of it. ☹️
The OST easily made this an easy sell for me. Hopefully, is not just for trailer purposes only. On a plus note, I really hope they adapt all the dragon quest games into anime. God knows that request is long overdued.
Looks like Detective Pikachu was just the beginning. This one's animation reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon! Even if the DBZ look is absent, the animation looks phenomenal!
This movie I think is animated by the same Korean company that did Dragon Nest. This is their animation style which is why it looks so different. It is kinda of like their other movies but with a dragon quest theme in the form of locations and monsters.
I love the attention to detail, like how they respected that the hero can only use the wind element like in the game (when its common for action series/movies to just give them fire or lightning), or how they specifically didn't show "you know who's" face at the end to avoid spoiling who's the chosen bride for the movie.
Never played Dragon Quest, but I know how important the series is, and this looks awesome. I can only imagine how happy fans of the series must be with all this attention lately. :)
Bruh, there's a ton of CGI anime that exactly like this. It's not Disney or Western anime exclusive. It's just English international community never picked them up.
There are only two things I don’t like about this 1. It doesn’t have akira toriyamas art style completely 2. Prolly will never get an English localization
4 5 and 6 are the zenithian trilogy. The legendary sword is the same as the one in 4 Though from what I know about 5, Abel shouldn't be able to use the equipment

Rejecting the virus doesnt mean rejecting the reality, it only means that you didnt cherish the childhood games you play, real or not they are a part of your memory and as a sign of love, you wanted to finish it until the end because those games give joy to your childhood, the inspiration you get from those games make you stand up and be the hero of your own story on this harsh reality.
they should have used the story of " How I stalked some dude with an exposed nipple and stumbled upon the Zenithian Sword". one of the best mangas i have read and also it would give a true meaning to dragon quest your story, since is fan based and written by a mangaka but inspired from an entire dragon quest community
I'm happy that they are making a movie about the best Dragon Quest but the story really deserved to be a full season of anime. It would be amazing if well animated.
Japan has been moving towards this CG styling type for theatrical animated movies for a while now, I've seen a few movies randomly over the last 10 years that have a similar look. I don't know if it's a specific type of director style or studio, but I'm pleased that it's not a fluke and continues to flourish.
Honest opinions, do you think they will make a sequel and end the first movie with him choosing which girl to marry? And yes, I know that Bianca, the blonde girl, is one of, if not, the most popular characters in Dragon Quest. And I loved her in Dragon Quest 5.
Considering the trailer shows Five (or w/e name they go with) turning to stone, and when that happens in the game, p sure we’ll be seeing who he goes with- spoilers, Bianca. There is no way it won’t be Bianca.

Went to the cinema for this movie last month and was very disappointed... First, the production team doesn't really understand how to use music effectively in filmmaking. They used the main theme lightly & meaninglessly 4 times in the movie, which significantly damaged the special nature of the main theme. The music itself composed by Koichi Sugiyama was really wonderful, but the incompetent production team totally ruined Koichi Sugiyama's work as if an incompetent cook made completely burnt dishes with finest-quality ingredients. Second, the movie has lot of voice acting issues. The recent Japanese anime industry wants to stubbornly use movie actors instead of talented voice actors, but why they want to do so is beyond me. Third, ......it ’s a joke they really believed that the movie should end like this! I suspect that the director of the movie made this story with the intention of undermining the fame the original DQ5 videogame has, or that he had serious mental issues. On the bright side CGI was great.
Really? It's a shame. I did not expect a 1:1 adaptation, considering the length of the game and the number of mini-arcs, but that's a disappointment. Without spoiling the main twist, does the movie go all the way to the third act of DQ V, or does it stop with the scene we see in the trailer?
I don't understand a word but since DQ 9 was my favorite childhood game and the only one I know from the saga this is pure nostalgia. Cool to recognize some monsters :D

I'm a fuckin rock. I believe he was asked to do character design because of his status and influence rather than his talent. Compare his art to any other mangaka around and you can see how underdeveloped his art is. World Design, Setting, Story, Comedy, Battle Scene all of them very great which made dragon ball legendary manga/anime. His art style is iconic, clean and easy to remember which also great. If he emerged today he will still be what he is now. But for this movie i think its good that they didnt use his style. for "3D MOVIE" current animation style is definitely better and easier for western/newcomers audience to watch.

I really hope they go with Toriyama style, like the cutscene in dq 11 when mordegon appears at yggdrasil. That's a beautiful 3d Toriyama style.

Rejecting the virus doesnt mean rejecting the reality, it only means that you didnt cherish the childhood games you play, real or not they are a part of your memory and as a sign of love, you wanted to finish it until the end because those games give joy to your childhood, the inspiration you get from those games make you stand up and be the hero of your own story on this harsh reality.

they should have used the story of " How I stalked some dude with an exposed nipple and stumbled upon the Zenithian Sword". one of the best mangas i have read and also it would give a true meaning to dragon quest your story, since is fan based and written by a mangaka but inspired from an entire dragon quest community
I'm happy that they are making a movie about the best Dragon Quest but the story really deserved to be a full season of anime. It would be amazing if well animated.

Japan has been moving towards this CG styling type for theatrical animated movies for a while now, I've seen a few movies randomly over the last 10 years that have a similar look. I don't know if it's a specific type of director style or studio, but I'm pleased that it's not a fluke and continues to flourish.

This hardly looks like Akira Toriyama's signature art style anymore I'm not sure how I feel about it.
I don't want to spoil but the reason for changing the art style is implied in the end of the movie.
Honest opinions, do you think they will make a sequel and end the first movie with him choosing which girl to marry? And yes, I know that Bianca, the blonde girl, is one of, if not, the most popular characters in Dragon Quest. And I loved her in Dragon Quest 5.
Considering the trailer shows Five (or w/e name they go with) turning to stone, and when that happens in the game, p sure we’ll be seeing who he goes with- spoilers, Bianca. There is no way it won’t be Bianca.

Hosea Davit I figured out how to manipulate the Dragon Quest VI Greedmore casino to get 30,000 tokens every few minutes. Still not sure if I can duplicate the trick in Dragon Quest 5.
DQ11 on PS4 is my introduction to the series, can't wait to see this!

Went to the cinema for this movie last month and was very disappointed...
First, the production team doesn't really understand how to use music effectively in filmmaking. They used the main theme lightly & meaninglessly 4 times in the movie, which significantly damaged the special nature of the main theme. The music itself composed by Koichi Sugiyama was really wonderful, but the incompetent production team totally ruined Koichi Sugiyama's work as if an incompetent cook made completely burnt dishes with finest-quality ingredients.
Second, the movie has lot of voice acting issues. The recent Japanese anime industry wants to stubbornly use movie actors instead of talented voice actors, but why they want to do so is beyond me.
Third, ......it ’s a joke they really believed that the movie should end like this!
I suspect that the director of the movie made this story with the intention of undermining the fame the original DQ5 videogame has, or that he had serious mental issues.
On the bright side CGI was great.
Really? It's a shame. I did not expect a 1:1 adaptation, considering the length of the game and the number of mini-arcs, but that's a disappointment. Without spoiling the main twist, does the movie go all the way to the third act of DQ V, or does it stop with the scene we see in the trailer?
It’s only about a 50 hour game

I'm a fuckin rock. I believe he was asked to do character design because of his status and influence rather than his talent. Compare his art to any other mangaka around and you can see how underdeveloped his art is. He is a legendary mangaka because of the right timing, if he emerged today he would never survive as a mangaka

World Design, Setting, Story, Comedy, Battle Scene all of them very great which made dragon ball legendary manga/anime. His art style is iconic, clean and easy to remember which also great. If he emerged today he will still be what he is now.
But for this movie i think its good that they didnt use his style. for "3D MOVIE" current animation style is definitely better and easier for western/newcomers audience to watch.
