In all honesty, I was initially disappointed that they used the 11th hero instead of Erdrick. Then they showed 4, 8, and erdrick and I was so excited I pooped and peed my pants.
The way they knew it was Hero the moment they heard the overture reminded me of when Maximillian Dood knew it was Cloud in his trailer the moment he heard the opening notes of the train theme.
Americans may not have cared for the Hero at first, but I think over time, the Hero's inclusion in Smash helped Dragon Quest grow in popularity in the West.
As an American gamer I was definitely excited for the hero in the roster. I grew up playing the first Dragon Quest in this series but I really fell in love with it when DQ8 came the west people really need to get this gem of jrpg a chance
I love that the hype started when the DQ theme started playing. Even if it wasn’t familiar to the majority of people outside Japan due to a combination of Enix's North America branch shutting down and Final Fantasy overshadowing DQ outside Japan, you gotta admit, many of our favorite RPGs would have been a lot different if it weren’t for DQ.

Personally, I'm already more excited about the Dragon Quest Hero in Smash than Banjo-Kazooie, because I didn't grow up with an N64 and Dragon Quest was my gateway into RPGs. But the sheer level of excitement from these players does even more when you put it into perspective. :) Despite enjoying the early Dragon Quest games, I haven't kept up with the series, and it's difficult to comprehend JUST how popular the Dragon Quest series has remained in Japan.
