  • Chiang Mai - I love local markets! So, I went to one where Tourists Don't Go To here in Chiang Mai
Local markets are always interesting. Way more than tourist markets. There are many local markets here in Chiang Mai. You can really experience the local life on these markets. What do the locals here in Chiang Mai, Thailand buy for their daily life? What’s going on on these markets? I’ve visited the Ton Phayom Market here in Chiang Mai, which is not really visited by many tourists. It’s outside the touristy areas of Chiang Mai. And although Chiang Mai 2021 is less crowded because of the lack of tourists here currently, a local Chiang Mai Market like the Ton Phayom Market can still be crowded.
Location of the Ton Phayom Market:

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently living in Thailand, making Thailand travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Bangkok and Thailand. I will be traveling Thailand, showing you around local places in Bangkok or try lots of different Thai food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Bangkok now and Thailand from a more authentic local point of view.

In December 2018 I was on a week of guided trip to Chiang Rai, Mae Sai, Golden Triangle, Chiang Mai and Don Sao, Laos. One week was certainly not enough but still it was a memorable trip and in December the weather was really pleasant.

03:20 At the store where you shot the video. Food wrapped in toasted banana leaves That's HorMok. Each package of raw materials inside is different. Mixed with curry paste and grilled. It's a mixed curry with fish, bamboo shoots. And as I told you, it's pig's brain.
And the one you bought at the beginning was the crispy pork you were looking for at the end of the clip called KabMoo. It's fried pork skin and the other type you buy is pork skin with fat. It's northern food. In order to be delicious, you have to eat it with Nam Prik Noom, it will go very well together.
Hang Lei curry is also one of the famous dishes of the North.
And in the city of Chiang Mai around the Night Bazaar market There will be mosques and Muslim villages there. There are many halal restaurants. But most of them sell Khao Soi and Thai rice and curry, but they are halal.😁😁🙏🙏

Oh yes.. I've visited that market once - it's on Suthep Road on the west side of the city. Didn't find anything to eat, though.. 😁 I remember they had lots of the spiral sausages. If you walk north you will find yourself in Nimmanhaemin. The river or canal that is nearby is called the Phayom, I think. Or maybe that is the name of the area. There is another similar market about 1km north of the Chang Phueak Gate which I have been to several times. Yeah, fresh strawberries are in season around January to March - the markets are full of them at that time. Insects are, in general, halal, but they have to be hygienic insects.. 😁 I've heard of people eating grasshoppers. I think the ones at the market are silkworms - they eat them in Japan, too. Reading the title of this video, it's like you're telling tourists to avoid the market.. 😂

In a sense, you'd get the environmentally conscious folks happy that you are refusing single-use plastic/containers.

Always be careful when saying the Thai word for banana because If you say it incorrect you could be saying the Thai word for the male private parts. It's very similar.🤣 Another great video!😊👍

Hi Ken, i loved your videos from a while back but you seem to be vlogging more about food than anything else these days (there are a million channels like this), dont get me wrong i love the fact that you interact and support the local vendors, especially in these times but i feel your vlogs now lack that great adventure and sightseeing that i used to love waiting for, this was the first vlog i actually fast forward :-( just my opinion otherwise good going

Thanks for the feedback Chris. I get what you mean. It's a bit challenging these times to make adventurous vlogs in a city that is really quiet and empty due to covid. Plus i also sometimes need a few days rest without big adventures. I will start a one month roadtrip around Northern Thailand in around 2 weeks though, more adventures will come then 💪

Moin Moin . Hast du schon durian probiert ( die Stinkefrucht ) ? Sehr lecker .

I am not sure yet. Will stay here at least until the end of september and then we'll see. Currently no other countries in southeast Asia have open borders for tourists😅

Yes, I love local markets. That's what I do too when visiting new places. And can't wait for the road trip!
You didn't show eating the gaeng hang lay? I think it should be eaten with steamed rice or sticky rice
The crispy pork snack is simply pig skin, without meat, that's why it doesn't taste like pork. I guess it's quite fattening, don't finish the whole bag at one go. Haha

Hi Ken 👋🏻 this is interesting 👍 exploring the local authentic food , just a right place to go to the local market , awesome. Fyi insects are not halal to consume by muslim except for locusts. Anyhow we follow either one of the Sunni Islamic (mazhab i.e shafie , hambali , maliki , hanafi) which varies from one region to another 👍

    • @lynia6587

@@KenAbroad locusts were considered halal and lawfully food in Islam because it was eaten during the time of the Prophet during war. And there were for some other reasons too which is a bit long to explain which I'm not an expert 😊

Brave Ken. You went where no tourists have gone before. Notice one trader did not register your mention of 'popcorn' a very common English word in metropolis Thai language. The rural grandmother selling you the 3 bananas was so naturally honest did not immediately grab all the paper bills you handed her for payment you thought was 50 baht. Instead, using her fingers carefully pick out just one 20baht bill from the several bills you handed her and reached into her apron pocket to bring out a 5 bath coin change to hand back to you. To me that was most impressive. Happy exploration, Ken.
