Just an idea about the drone. Does it have enough metal in it to retrieve it with your big magnet? If so, tie the magnet rope right under the GoPro so you can see to land in the right place.
CHIG you need a winch to raise and lower, just an idea. Also I see a tape measure, old beer cans, prescription bottle, otc bottle (tylenol), mayo type jars, drone, a hell of a big bug and more. Also when sending drones down stay away from sides as the draft is there, and tie fishing line to it to retrieve it in case. No body. Anduse a coat hanger to retrieve. If drone is not wet it is still good. Check opposite direction the BF said. Use two phones and face time to coordinate. You need a helper! ;)
As the camera was going down, I was like, what is that!? A frog? Nope, the drone, dead in the water. Literally. Fascinating to have the look down there. Thanks for doing that.
A cool little idea- take a big river fishing rod and reel or even a sea fishing rod. Get a reel with a line counter that will tell you how many feet/yards/meters of line you have out. Use braided line that is strong enough for a camera(s) and also that won't chafe much on rock. I love watching your channel, Chig! 👍
That was an amazing video, Chigg! I hate it that your little drone is down in there but at least there wasn't a human body and that's the good news. Thank you so much for checking that out for her sister.
The things you do at your age is phenomenal. I have a lot of respect for that, things can go wrong by yourself in an environment like that. Same goes for when you metal detect streams and rivers. A. rave individual you are. I’m in my late late 40s and I’m not sure if I could do some things you do without a buddy in case things go south. Much respect. I used to drive OTR…the first places I would look are garbage dumps and landfills…truckers use random dumpsters. A cadaver dog would be optimal in those types of places along his route that day.
At least we know the drone will be down there for awhile. Staged some mock pickup attempts standing on the roof with my mini 2 on the ground. Even my mid size fishing magnet had troubles. Only the rotors stuck on. I would still recommend contacting dji refresh and telling about the navigation problem. I've lost a few myself and they replace them every time. Thanks for the continuing adventure.

You gave that mine shaft a good thorough look and at least are able to confidently check that off the list. Something about a deep dark hole that is hard to not suspect. Now the family and any other searchers can at least focus on other possibilities and not have that miss-direction continually haunt them. Sorry for your drone loss, but this discovery is likely worth much more. Good job, Chig!
Very cool video Mr. Chigg! I have been watching the series on this missing person. You take us places that we would never get to!👌Thanks from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦!
Really surprised that with the type of terrain, the proximity to the road and trails, and the condition of the opening-that there is NO barricade or warning signs of any type around that shaft!!!! Yeah- I'd say write off that drone and lesson learned for the future! Good video Chigg!
Was thinking about your lost drone as I went through this area on the Interstate twice last week. Great idea with the ropes and camera! Really good job getting it down there on target and looking around especially since you were so far away from the edge. I'm glad you didn't fall in ... that looks pretty sketchy! I hope it was over fast for the coyote and he didn't linger there starving or drowning with a broken body. They really do need some kind of rickety fence around that thing ...
The first time I became aware of these things was in a Dean Koontz novel (Velocity I think?) where indeed a body was disposed of in such a manner. It's crazy to think men and children used to have to work in such places elsewhere for coal. Very scary. I'm so glad you sent the camera down and I'm sorry about the drone-at least now the sister knows she's not down there and can rule it out. Bless you for looking, stay safe!!!
