    Many years ago, I read a science fiction short story about a man who travels back to the Middle Ages with a few “marvels” of modern tech. He thought he would wow the locals and gain prestige. He did not think things through. He ended up as a court jester, because obviously he was a madman and only fit for entertainment. 😂😂😂😂😂

      Indeed. Some seem to think that medieval people were somehow stupid because they didn’t have all the gadgets of todays world. That is far from the truth. Medieval people were very tough, shrewd and inventive. They had to be to survive in such a world.

      Uh- of i were somehow transported back to the 12th-14th centuries, i'd totally take a court jester gig over 99.999% of other jobs in medieval society. You get to talk sh*t to your lord, are fed, housed, and clothed, and basically left alone bc people think your "touched in the head" or whatever.

    The pie crust isn't thrown away, you throw away nothing you can use - even scraps of food end up in stews or given to animals. It's resued, or donated to the very poor who will of course eat anything and will usually soften it in some kind of liquid, or it's given to the pigs or dogs.

    • @LuvBorderCollies
      @LuvBorderCollies 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Dogs will eat some really gross stuff. But pigs have an even wider menu as they're open to most plants, even weeds. Older pigs like breeding sows do like new tastes every so often. When they get tired of, say cucumbers, they quit eating them or only eat them if hungry enough. But when they first get cucumbers they're living the High Life..!! LOL 🤣

    There were public baths. It was a holdover from Roman times. Lots of medieval cities had several. Of course, they were also used for prostitution, so the church was against public baths. Most people just bathed in cold water, but they did have soap. It's also worth noting that whatever the nobles had was manufactured by peasants, whether they were local peasants or peasants somewhere else. That means perfume, clothing, soap, wine, etc. The nobles did not make any of that for themselves.

    If I were going to be traveling back to the medieval period in Europe, I would pose as a member of the merchant class. Trying to pass as nobility requires proving one's pedigree and lineage, which would be difficult. Trying to pass as a member of the clergy would come with other difficulties, and being found out as a fraud would be a near certainty. Coming from the future, I'm certain I could equip myself with kit and educate myself sufficiently to pass as a trader, though. The life of a peasant isn't going to tell you much about life in the era other than how damned miserable it could be. What's the point in that?
    With sufficient funds provided from home base here in the present (in the form of a little gold and silver coinage) you can establish yourself in your chosen trade (best thing would be to buy and sell commodities that fetch good prices. You could go to the supermarket here in the present, get a few cases of peppercorns for a couple hundred dollars, and take that back to the past with you. With an inventory like that to sell, you'd quickly be richer than most of the nobility, and even a few kings). After a few good deals selling wholesale to the retail traders back then, you'd be set up, have a good reputation, and be ready to experience one of the best lives the era had to offer.

      @@theimpossiblemary No. The sudden infusion of modern-day political issues was very jarring. It really felt like something hammered into the plot, as it didn't obey the rules laid out in the first 2/3rds of the film.
      The ending duel, while fun, was also frustrating to me. I thought that Damon's character should have had more utilitarian and worn armor and should have been better at combat than Driver's character, who should have had more polished and ornate armor. I think this because throughout the film, Damon's character is always on campaign, while Driver's character is always at court. At the very least, maybe we should have noted Driver's character's success in tournaments or something similar. It makes no sense for a knight that's been fighting for decades to have any issue defeating a courtier.

    I'd argue a modern traveler could probably leverage even just a basic high school education for decent job once settled, also could probably revolutionize a few things if you know some basic chemistry, or advanced math that wouldn't be invented for several hundred years. The medievals shall learn to fear the power of tenth grade Calculus!

      But you would need to be able to communicate well with the right people. The best bet would be a monastery. But you can’t spook these people or be suspicious. You would have to learn the language first. It would be advantageous to learn about the current state of knowledge of the time you were brought into. I would say that applying basic high school knowledge in middle ages would be quite hard, since you would most likely face misunderstanding and you would have to fit in first to be able to apply your knowledge. It also wouldn’t help that many jobs would be banned by church or controlled by gilds.

      It's because today there's more wealth than ever before but it's stripped from the regular folk and concentrated on the top 0.1% of the world. Back then wealth disparity was comparatively less because everyone had less wealth as today the average white collar worker can enjoy leisures an old medieval king couldn't dream of.
