Birds are my favorite animal and the reason I started following your channel! I've kept budgies and one dove. I had to give them away when I moved to college, but I hope to have a full aviary of rescued birds one day when I'm settled into my career. Just know there's at least one bird fanatic who is delighted every time you upload a video about birds!
I'm fourteen and I'm getting a cockatiel for my birthday in march. Probably a younger one. Should I just leave it with my parents when I graduate or should I get an apartment versus stay in a dorm so I can keep him with me?
My cockatiel talks a lot too. He says “pretty boy” “gimme a kiss” and “whatcha doing”. He learns new stuff quickly. It’s the females that only chirp and make whistling sounds.
She reminds me of the woman from the cartoon Rio. She just needs the glasses. I like when people study and actually understand animals. Thanks for this educational video.
I love birds! I've had up to 6 different budgies in my lifetime. They sure do speak to you in their own way. My favorite part is when they become your best friend!
I really like the mood meter part, because it helped me a lot to understand the moods of my own cockatiel. I also never knew that they claimed a space by pacing on it, which clears up why he runs around atop his cage and doesnt like you picking him up from there. one great way to watch birds and their social life is to put out a feeder. i'm a birder and seeing how their complex social structures play out is really rewarding, but not everyone can keep a bird pet or go out on long birding trips. feeders attract backyard birds of all types, and they're all amazing to watch. even when small fights break out, you learn a lot about how birds communicate in how they are resolved.
i owned 3 cockatiels but sadly they died of old age kroshka at 19 fred-15 and sasha at 21 im thinking of getting another one i cant stop loving these birds
@@jr-bw1lt Our cockatiel is 24. He can't see that much any more but he does its best. We are scared for the day he passes away and hope it will be a fast one.
My Chipper is15. Though he's never had health issues(knock on wood)and still remains in good health, I can't bear the thought of losing him--he's my little ray of sunshine. I've read about cockatiels living to the age of 25 when in captivity. On another site, someone mentioned that his cockatiel was age 28 and still in remarkably good health. I do hope Chipper lives as long as he possibly can.

As a result, he gives so much back in return. Chipper has a sweet and somewhat clownish personality in which he'll "ham it up" with his posing for the camera and interacting with ppl with his vocal repertoire. I defiitely support you on getting a cockatiel. Good luck!
I also love the hissing. And our cockatiel, Thomas, also rocks back and forth and it's just so odd and fascinating to watch. We used to have budgies too and the one blue one would not leave our cockatiel alone. just followed him everywhere with Thomas just trying to get away. He was a good sport about it.
I just got me my very first cockatiel after being around for 41 years. I am old I know. But this is my first cockatiel and I hope that I do a good job at taming him and training him for the long haul.
I got my two cockatiels thanks to this video. I have had smaller birds for almost 22 years before this, but this video made me brave enough to take the plunge. And my cockatiels are so lovely! They are not tame and don't want to be handled but respond to clicker training and accept millet from my hand. They also have a whole room to fly around in if they want (they usually do a few quick laps in the morning and sometimes in the evening). Mine are probably both female even though they were sold as male + female, but I don't mind. and the hissing is hilarious! My chonky cinnamon female loves to hiss at everything. Especially now during the pandemic, if I come in and say hi with my face mask still on, she goes full "HHHH" at me since I don't look like I normally look. All the best to Steve and Agent Perri!
LOL the hiss! Our budgie makes little "ehh" noises when she is not happy. When she is really mad she chirps one loud "Merck". She coos when she is being cuddly and sings when she is content. Love your vids
I really enjoy learning about birdie language, even though i don’t want or have one. It’s just so different from your typical mammal. Like how toucans can make this weird clicking sound when happy/content. And i had no idea budgies (well some) enjoy lots of interaction and noise until i went over my friend’s and played with her 3 little budgies. It’s very different from my old man shih tzu, who can very clearly tell you what he wants.
My family had a cockatiel when I was a little kid. Her name was Amy. She would whistle every time she heard the World News Tonight theme song, and she'd whistle until the song was over. She lived into her teens and she started laying a lot of eggs in the last couple weeks of her life. We always thought that was fascinating. I didn't have the appreciation for birds then that I do now. I love to watch them.
I have a cockatiel named Chipper who is15 years of age. Let's say that he lives up to his name--he's very sweet and interactive with a rather clownish personality. Chipper likes to "ham it up" when he poses for photos and in showing his vocal repertoire(I have videos of his doing that here). I believe cockatiels epitomize the phrase "Good things come in small packages"--when properly trained, they have so much to offer! Though he's not really a biter, I've seen him use his crest like Steve does to communicate. Thanks for this upload.
Ur a great talker , alot of voice level change and facial changes , emotions keeps the attention . I had 3 cockatiels , they lived 16-19 years ( I had then since young ) they really bonded with me and I also.
You would think that the cockatiel might pose a threat to the budgie, but my experience has been the other way around. Budgies are more fiesty than tiels, who tend to be much more shy, and males tend to be more receptive to a tiel than females. Interestingly, though, my females cautiously took to our tiel because he was still a baby, and they've loved him ever since. Introducing a new female budgie to the mix, though, forget it. We replaced our beautiful much loved and dearly missed male budgie with what we thought and were assured was another male, until she had a sudden cere colour change and laid an egg. Despite being beautiful and tame with humans, she nearly killed the cockatiel repeatedly attacking his toes and feathers causing him to bleed. Despite loving her, we didn't have the heart to home her in another cage alone and fortunately she was able to be rehomed. I hope it was the right decision. At our end, the tiel/budgie cage is harmonious again, so much so that when we quarantined one of the birds who was a little unwell for care and treatment, upon recovering she was desperate to rejoin her friends. Too cute.
I just rescued a sun Conure. Picking him up tomorrow. He is being abandoned. It's my first bird, he is still healthy but tomorrow is the last day he will be with someone. So I'm really excited and ambitious. I'm ready to get into the hobby of birds and These videos have helped so much on how to be bird safe etc.
Our first cockatiel was named Steve. I love cockatiels! They are great birds! Now we have a special needs cockatiel who has prognathism. He is the sweetest little guy ever!

Cockatiels do not like the color black and green together because they think it is a snake naturally. When they're annoyed with something and just done with it, they'll fluff and give you the half lidded stare. Each cockatiel has unique things about them though. My cockatiel didn't like baths, ever. He preferred to be rained on rather than being sprayed or given a dish to get into. If you gave him a dish, he would step in, fling 3 drops on himself and that was a bath. When you sat his cage out in a warm rain, he would go through full natural display of bathing with bowing and turning his feathers up, shaking, etc. Cockatiels bow when they're impressed with something or want to be impressive. My cockatiel lived to be 37 years old. He just passed away in July 2015. He thrived on Hartz 8 in 1 seed diet, he HATED banana's, would only eat apples, loved crackers, lettuce, cabbage, and fresh grass with clover. He absolutely hated butterflies that would get into his cage when he was sitting outside, loved to be let loose to fly around the house, and of course, mirrors. He also adored paper bags, he thought they were caves and he should defend them. He also loved to balance on a ball or large egg, he would try his best to stand on it.
I rescued a parrotlet named Lenny. He is awesome and I've been keeping him in my college dorm. The RA is cool with it but I have to keep him hidden from other administrative people in the building.

when a parrot or parakeet is bored or no longer wanna stay n your finger or hand, they will let u know that n a very clear manner, thr bodylanguage will be like try to jump or fly from your hand or finger and increase n movment too!
I'd love to see a video like this about your doves. I struggle to understand my pair as they slowly get to know each other. They don't have as many resources as more commonly kept birds like budgies, cockatiels and other hookbills, so I'd really love to see an expert like you cover the matter. I hope Steve and his friend are getting along well. It's always nice for a bird to have a fellow bird friend. :)
I found that cockatiels are great communicators and are very easy to understand (especially because of the crest). You could also say that content tiels usually pick up on human behavior after a while given that you interact with them.
Anyone else watch Ekkilson's episode in DW, with "I give you the gift of air from my lungs!" Every time my little cockatiel hisses (pretty much at anything that isn't me) it reminds me of that.
It took me years to realize that every time my cockatiel Piper peeped, that she was instructing me to do something. She passed away last year at the age of 19. My parrot and I didn't know if we could get along without her sweet bossiness. We are doing ok but miss her very much.
I have a male cockatiel named Whistler because he whistles. My grandparents ( my mom's parents) were his original owners. He likes it when music is on. Sometimes He says hello.

Forgot to add their fluffing. When a cockatiel (or cockatoo) fluffs up the feathers to cover the bottom of their beak, it means that they are happy. If their entire bottom beak (and sometimes even part of their top beak) is covered, the bird is very, very happy. Feathers pressed tight to the body signifies fear (oftentimes tiels will raise their necks up, too). Also, a tall crest simply means arousal level. So a high crest with a fluffed up beak would mean that the bird is overjoyed (my 'tiel does this when he gets to go on his favorite swing, or on car rides). A high crest with feathers pressed close to the body would signify that the bird is terrified.
Me too...I just bought a cockatiel...his birthday is October 15th...well, that's what the store told me...I'm trying to tame him...I go to his cage to get him use to me...I put his cage on a tv table and sit with him...i put my hand in the cage to get him use to me...he doesn't move away as much...I'm doing everything I was told to do...but he still hisses at me...i talk to him in a very calm voice...we are not even close to him letting me take him out of the cage...lol...I'm going VERY slow...i had a hand tamed cockatiel that was hand raised...he was my favorite...I'm hoping this one will learn to like me lol...How is it going with your bird?
Nice Upload. You got the emotions down. Be-careful with " curious " and " territorial " those mix with a few other looks and will take a bit before you know what is what.
One problem with the crest rules is that they often will put their crest down when they are being loving. Sometimes the male will be singing and you will notice his crest is flat. When I cuddle my female and bring her close to my face she puts her crest flat and does gentle nibbles or holds still to be scratched. The whole time with the crest flat. So sometimes this demonstration can be misunderstood and it is important to notice all the cues to add them up to what the tiel is feeling. :) BTW my favorite way they express is the bat. They hang themselves upside-down with wings spread all the way open. It's to show "this belongs to me".
I am curious about birds and talking. Do you at Animal Wonders Montana teach birds to talk? When you adopt birds who were already trained to talk, do you reward them for it? Do you think it is stimulating for birds to be trained to talk? I feel like this topic deserves a video of its own.

In this video you say you have had him for 7 months now. That is almost how long I have had mine for and he still hates my guts and hisses at me. He wasn't hand fed but still I wonder how long it will take for him to get use to me.

Ive had cockateils for over 15 years now. The only thing this video didnt mention is how long they live! They can sometimes live to be 20+ years. Introducing new birds can be nerve wracking. Our own vet told us not to put the cockateils with budgies because they would kill them. At our max, we had 6 birds in one cage. 3 cockateils and 3 budgies and they were a very happy family. We always gave them lots of time outside of the cage though and let them do their introductions out in the open, not in the cage. Usually the newest bird would spend the first day or two in our house just flying around free. They would start using the cage when they were comfortable sharing the food and water dish.

Hey Jessi. I'm hoping you can help me with my 4 months old Black Cap Green Cheek Conure. I just got him and he was previously hand fed,tame and eating pellets. But when i brought him home he doesn't seem to be eating his budgie sized zupreem which the previous owner fed him. i gave him pine nuts by hand he went crazy for it but i only gave him a little of those not over feeding them with it. He does eats broccoli tho. I do not want to feed him seed mix as he hasn't been introduce to it yet. Should i just surrender and get him seed mix first or is there a way to get him eating his fruit blend pellets again. Another thing i let him out an hour for the past 3 days and the moment i open the cage first thing he does is fly on my shoulder. It really hard for him to get him on my hand and being a 1st time bird owner i am not fairly confident of grabbing of from my shoulder and didn't want him to get scared of my hand. Each time i asked him to step up from my shoulder to my hands his nips on it with gradual force,forcing me the flick my finger in order for him to stop. I had to bribe him with pine nuts in order for him to get of my shoulder for awhile and and flies straight back on my shoulder again. Also had to bait him with pine nuts to get back in the cage and he doesn't seem to play with cage toys too. I've seen videos of that most bird would play outside the cage if its open but not this guy. He seems to love shoulder so much. I've build him a play gym that he doesn't even touches it. Cause the first time i saw him, he just flies straight to my shoulder. Even the previous owner was surprise. But is really hard to handle him if he is on my shoulder every time he gets out. Any advice guys? Should i go to a vet clipped him?
Hi Jessi, I am bringing home a new baby boy cockatiel into a flock of two female cockatiels. How can I help him become a part of our flock? If the breeder allows I will probably hand feed him for about 2-4 weeks; I'm experienced and I found that helped each of my girls bond to me and become social. At what point should I allow him to explore the aviary both Mithril and Arwen sleep and eat in? Is there anything in particular I should be especially attentive to when he arrives? Is it going to create trouble for myself if I allow him to live in the same aviary cage both my girls live in -- once he knows how to fly and how to perch of course? Will time of year and the girls' raging hormones matter in this process or will they give him his "childhood" before getting all excited that he's a boy? PS: it took Arwen a YEAR to figure out how to climb, but mastered flight and even landing by eight weeks! It took Mithril a year to master flying and landing despite having another bird to show her how to when she was young. Cockatiels are so individual! :)
What does it mean when they hit the cage with their beak, say "mitu" on seeing their fav cloth, make that weird squeak sound which is prolonged in duration?
I had several cockatiels, always 2. For me it was never a problem to introduce one to his/her new partner. I had also budgies, kept in seperate rooms, since they never worked out with the cockatiels (The cockatiel would go sit on the budgies cage, but they would bite in his feet)
I fonud Cockatiels very easy to read, budgies were also more difficult here. And after a while figured out, also the songs the cockatiel would sing would match a situation. I wonder tough, if this was specific to the ones or if there was a generic one. Espeically improtant was to notice was the "nest building song".. then the cockatiel would sit in a book case tearing up some book..

I want to train her to use a harness so she can go outside but I dont know how to go about it? Could you maybe help or make a video on it?
well, cockatiels and budgies still use like a different language, best would be a second bird from the same species for each... but it is very nice that they have a home now where they can stay
I have a question. Sometimes I like to go to my local pet stores and look at their birds (normally seeing if they have rescue birds) and sometimes when I go to see the conures, one or two will scratch it's beak up and down on the glass when I approach. It sorta looks like they're dancing. I've also noticed that that they do it when I look at them from far away or when I begin to walk away from their tank/cage. Is this them trying to get my attention or a sort of "get out of/stay away from my territory" behavior? I should also mention that most of these are younger birds and they do not do it to anyone else in the store.

My budgerigars often quarrel in what seems to be over territory. Their cage is larger than what the Pet Smart representatives recommended however they are missing a large wooden dowel because they chewed through it. We are in the process of getting a new one, but they have not been heavily affected because of this. Also note that I got one budgie later than the other by 6 months and I believe he has eye problems. Both have eaten from my hand but I have not practised this for a while and they refuse to come near me. Could someone please provide guidance? Thanks.
Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Gooosh this brought back memories of my Cockatiels. I'd love another, but my others were Houdinis and I couldn't bare the heartbreak again. I'm also not a fan of clipping wings because they can display natural behaviours and get out of harms way. So - I'll just stick to swooning over Steve. Was Steve named after Steve Irwin?
Keeping them in cages is unnatural too. I clip my lovebird's wings. Mostly because I live in an apartment, and the fact my male one is as dumb as a brick and would fly directly into the windows. Also, when clipped they're quieter and less stressed I noticed. They still get around and their favourite spot is above the curtains. (Note, my male might be stupid, I still love him more than anything in this world :P )
I have 2 parrots. My cockatiel is visually impaired and really only feels safe when he rides around on my shoulder all day, even during all the housework & noisy vacuuming. We call that going "shoulder surfing". His wings aren't clipped because he rarely gets off me & rarely tries to fly. My kakariki parrot flies like a fighter jet. His ability to manoeuvre at top speed, avoiding moving & stationary objects is very impressive. I live in an apartment also and have a large glass patio door. My bird's cages are opened as soon as I am up & they can come & go as they please. I use some paper with a large black X on each patio pane. This way the glass is not invisible to my flier. I did clip his wings once in an effort to slow him down a little. Even though he could still fly well with a little more effort, he got very depressed. He wouldn't come & socialize and just hung out in his cage all day. When his wing feathers grew back in. I left them alone. It took a long time for him to come out of his depressed state. I will never trim his wings again. Each bird caregiver needs to assess the requirements of their own individual bird's situation & make the best decision they can.

I have a cockateal and something cool about him is that when I go to another room for a little he will call me. First just a little whistles, but if I dont respond than he will scream.

I have a 14 year old cockatiel hen. She's definitely flying less than when she was younger. of course she's also learned that if she tells me she wants to go somewhere I will probably pick her up and bring her that instead of needing to fly herself.

And i had no idea budgies (well some) enjoy lots of interaction and noise until i went over my friend’s and played with her 3 little budgies. It’s very different from my old man shih tzu, who can very clearly tell you what he wants.
My family had a cockatiel when I was a little kid. Her name was Amy. She would whistle every time she heard the World News Tonight theme song, and she'd whistle until the song was over. She lived into her teens and she started laying a lot of eggs in the last couple weeks of her life. We always thought that was fascinating. I didn't have the appreciation for birds then that I do now. I love to watch them.
I have a cockatiel named Chipper who is15 years of age. Let's say that he lives up to his name--he's very sweet and interactive with a rather clownish personality. Chipper likes to "ham it up" when he poses for photos and in showing his vocal repertoire(I have videos of his doing that here). I believe cockatiels epitomize the phrase "Good things come in small packages"--when properly trained, they have so much to offer! Though he's not really a biter, I've seen him use his crest like Steve does to communicate. Thanks for this upload.

You would think that the cockatiel might pose a threat to the budgie, but my experience has been the other way around. Budgies are more fiesty than tiels, who tend to be much more shy, and males tend to be more receptive to a tiel than females. Interestingly, though, my females cautiously took to our tiel because he was still a baby, and they've loved him ever since. Introducing a new female budgie to the mix, though, forget it. We replaced our beautiful much loved and dearly missed male budgie with what we thought and were assured was another male, until she had a sudden cere colour change and laid an egg. Despite being beautiful and tame with humans, she nearly killed the cockatiel repeatedly attacking his toes and feathers causing him to bleed. Despite loving her, we didn't have the heart to home her in another cage alone and fortunately she was able to be rehomed. I hope it was the right decision. At our end, the tiel/budgie cage is harmonious again, so much so that when we quarantined one of the birds who was a little unwell for care and treatment, upon recovering she was desperate to rejoin her friends. Too cute.

I just rescued a sun Conure. Picking him up tomorrow. He is being abandoned. It's my first bird, he is still healthy but tomorrow is the last day he will be with someone. So I'm really excited and ambitious. I'm ready to get into the hobby of birds and These videos have helped so much on how to be bird safe etc.

Our first cockatiel was named Steve. I love cockatiels! They are great birds! Now we have a special needs cockatiel who has prognathism. He is the sweetest little guy ever!

Cockatiels do not like the color black and green together because they think it is a snake naturally. When they're annoyed with something and just done with it, they'll fluff and give you the half lidded stare. Each cockatiel has unique things about them though. My cockatiel didn't like baths, ever. He preferred to be rained on rather than being sprayed or given a dish to get into. If you gave him a dish, he would step in, fling 3 drops on himself and that was a bath. When you sat his cage out in a warm rain, he would go through full natural display of bathing with bowing and turning his feathers up, shaking, etc. Cockatiels bow when they're impressed with something or want to be impressive. My cockatiel lived to be 37 years old. He just passed away in July 2015. He thrived on Hartz 8 in 1 seed diet, he HATED banana's, would only eat apples, loved crackers, lettuce, cabbage, and fresh grass with clover. He absolutely hated butterflies that would get into his cage when he was sitting outside, loved to be let loose to fly around the house, and of course, mirrors. He also adored paper bags, he thought they were caves and he should defend them. He also loved to balance on a ball or large egg, he would try his best to stand on it.

I rescued a parrotlet named Lenny. He is awesome and I've been keeping him in my college dorm. The RA is cool with it but I have to keep him hidden from other administrative people in the building.

Margaret Teragram He wasn't communicating anything at that exact moment in the video, but you can see later in the video that he was nipping at my hand. He did that a few times right before I called it quits and let him leave the situation. Thanks for asking!
when a parrot or parakeet is bored or no longer wanna stay n your finger or hand, they will let u know that n a very clear manner, thr bodylanguage will be like try to jump or fly from your hand or finger and increase n movment too!

I found that cockatiels are great communicators and are very easy to understand (especially because of the crest). You could also say that content tiels usually pick up on human behavior after a while given that you interact with them.

Anyone else watch Ekkilson's episode in DW, with "I give you the gift of air from my lungs!" Every time my little cockatiel hisses (pretty much at anything that isn't me) it reminds me of that.
It took me years to realize that every time my cockatiel Piper peeped, that she was instructing me to do something. She passed away last year at the age of 19. My parrot and I didn't know if we could get along without her sweet bossiness. We are doing ok but miss her very much.

Forgot to add their fluffing. When a cockatiel (or cockatoo) fluffs up the feathers to cover the bottom of their beak, it means that they are happy. If their entire bottom beak (and sometimes even part of their top beak) is covered, the bird is very, very happy.
Feathers pressed tight to the body signifies fear (oftentimes tiels will raise their necks up, too).
Also, a tall crest simply means arousal level. So a high crest with a fluffed up beak would mean that the bird is overjoyed (my 'tiel does this when he gets to go on his favorite swing, or on car rides). A high crest with feathers pressed close to the body would signify that the bird is terrified.

Me too...I just bought a cockatiel...his birthday is October 15th...well, that's what the store told me...I'm trying to tame him...I go to his cage to get him use to me...I put his cage on a tv table and sit with him...i put my hand in the cage to get him use to me...he doesn't move away as much...I'm doing everything I was told to do...but he still hisses at me...i talk to him in a very calm voice...we are not even close to him letting me take him out of the cage...lol...I'm going VERY slow...i had a hand tamed cockatiel that was hand raised...he was my favorite...I'm hoping this one will learn to like me lol...How is it going with your bird?

One problem with the crest rules is that they often will put their crest down when they are being loving. Sometimes the male will be singing and you will notice his crest is flat. When I cuddle my female and bring her close to my face she puts her crest flat and does gentle nibbles or holds still to be scratched. The whole time with the crest flat. So sometimes this demonstration can be misunderstood and it is important to notice all the cues to add them up to what the tiel is feeling. :) BTW my favorite way they express is the bat. They hang themselves upside-down with wings spread all the way open. It's to show "this belongs to me".
I am curious about birds and talking. Do you at Animal Wonders Montana teach birds to talk? When you adopt birds who were already trained to talk, do you reward them for it? Do you think it is stimulating for birds to be trained to talk? I feel like this topic deserves a video of its own.

Ive had cockateils for over 15 years now. The only thing this video didnt mention is how long they live! They can sometimes live to be 20+ years. Introducing new birds can be nerve wracking. Our own vet told us not to put the cockateils with budgies because they would kill them. At our max, we had 6 birds in one cage. 3 cockateils and 3 budgies and they were a very happy family. We always gave them lots of time outside of the cage though and let them do their introductions out in the open, not in the cage. Usually the newest bird would spend the first day or two in our house just flying around free. They would start using the cage when they were comfortable sharing the food and water dish.

Hey Jessi. I'm hoping you can help me with my 4 months old Black Cap Green Cheek Conure. I just got him and he was previously hand fed,tame and eating pellets. But when i brought him home he doesn't seem to be eating his budgie sized zupreem which the previous owner fed him. i gave him pine nuts by hand he went crazy for it but i only gave him a little of those not over feeding them with it. He does eats broccoli tho. I do not want to feed him seed mix as he hasn't been introduce to it yet. Should i just surrender and get him seed mix first or is there a way to get him eating his fruit blend pellets again.
Another thing i let him out an hour for the past 3 days and the moment i open the cage first thing he does is fly on my shoulder. It really hard for him to get him on my hand and being a 1st time bird owner i am not fairly confident of grabbing of from my shoulder and didn't want him to get scared of my hand. Each time i asked him to step up from my shoulder to my hands his nips on it with gradual force,forcing me the flick my finger in order for him to stop. I had to bribe him with pine nuts in order for him to get of my shoulder for awhile and and flies straight back on my shoulder again. Also had to bait him with pine nuts to get back in the cage and he doesn't seem to play with cage toys too. I've seen videos of that most bird would play outside the cage if its open but not this guy. He seems to love shoulder so much. I've build him a play gym that he doesn't even touches it. Cause the first time i saw him, he just flies straight to my shoulder. Even the previous owner was surprise. But is really hard to handle him if he is on my shoulder every time he gets out.
Any advice guys? Should i go to a vet clipped him?
Hi Jessi, I am bringing home a new baby boy cockatiel into a flock of two female cockatiels. How can I help him become a part of our flock? If the breeder allows I will probably hand feed him for about 2-4 weeks; I'm experienced and I found that helped each of my girls bond to me and become social. At what point should I allow him to explore the aviary both Mithril and Arwen sleep and eat in? Is there anything in particular I should be especially attentive to when he arrives? Is it going to create trouble for myself if I allow him to live in the same aviary cage both my girls live in -- once he knows how to fly and how to perch of course? Will time of year and the girls' raging hormones matter in this process or will they give him his "childhood" before getting all excited that he's a boy?
PS: it took Arwen a YEAR to figure out how to climb, but mastered flight and even landing by eight weeks! It took Mithril a year to master flying and landing despite having another bird to show her how to when she was young. Cockatiels are so individual! :)
What does it mean when they hit the cage with their beak, say "mitu" on seeing their fav cloth, make that weird squeak sound which is prolonged in duration?
I had several cockatiels, always 2. For me it was never a problem to introduce one to his/her new partner.
I had also budgies, kept in seperate rooms, since they never worked out with the cockatiels (The cockatiel would go sit on the budgies cage, but they would bite in his feet)
I fonud Cockatiels very easy to read, budgies were also more difficult here.
And after a while figured out, also the songs the cockatiel would sing would match a situation. I wonder tough, if this was specific to the ones or if there was a generic one.
Espeically improtant was to notice was the "nest building song".. then the cockatiel would sit in a book case tearing up some book..

I want to train her to use a harness so she can go outside but I dont know how to go about it? Could you maybe help or make a video on it?
well, cockatiels and budgies still use like a different language, best would be a second bird from the same species for each... but it is very nice that they have a home now where they can stay

Everyone who get a new cockatiel needs to see this. There is so much ignorance out there regarding cockatiels.
I have a question. Sometimes I like to go to my local pet stores and look at their birds (normally seeing if they have rescue birds) and sometimes when I go to see the conures, one or two will scratch it's beak up and down on the glass when I approach. It sorta looks like they're dancing. I've also noticed that that they do it when I look at them from far away or when I begin to walk away from their tank/cage. Is this them trying to get my attention or a sort of "get out of/stay away from my territory" behavior? I should also mention that most of these are younger birds and they do not do it to anyone else in the store.
Parrots are little hams, ESPECIALLY conures. These guys are trying to get your attention. XD

My budgerigars often quarrel in what seems to be over territory. Their cage is larger than what the Pet Smart representatives recommended however they are missing a large wooden dowel because they chewed through it. We are in the process of getting a new one, but they have not been heavily affected because of this. Also note that I got one budgie later than the other by 6 months and I believe he has eye problems. Both have eaten from my hand but I have not practised this for a while and they refuse to come near me. Could someone please provide guidance? Thanks.

Gooosh this brought back memories of my Cockatiels.
I'd love another, but my others were Houdinis and I couldn't bare the heartbreak again. I'm also not a fan of clipping wings because they can display natural behaviours and get out of harms way. So - I'll just stick to swooning over Steve.

Keeping them in cages is unnatural too. I clip my lovebird's wings. Mostly because I live in an apartment, and the fact my male one is as dumb as a brick and would fly directly into the windows. Also, when clipped they're quieter and less stressed I noticed. They still get around and their favourite spot is above the curtains. (Note, my male might be stupid, I still love him more than anything in this world :P )
I have 2 parrots. My cockatiel is visually impaired and really only feels safe when he rides around on my shoulder all day, even during all the housework & noisy vacuuming. We call that going "shoulder surfing". His wings aren't clipped because he rarely gets off me & rarely tries to fly. My kakariki parrot flies like a fighter jet. His ability to manoeuvre at top speed, avoiding moving & stationary objects is very impressive. I live in an apartment also and have a large glass patio door. My bird's cages are opened as soon as I am up & they can come & go as they please. I use some paper with a large black X on each patio pane. This way the glass is not invisible to my flier. I did clip his wings once in an effort to slow him down a little. Even though he could still fly well with a little more effort, he got very depressed. He wouldn't come & socialize and just hung out in his cage all day. When his wing feathers grew back in. I left them alone. It took a long time for him to come out of his depressed state. I will never trim his wings again. Each bird caregiver needs to assess the requirements of their own individual bird's situation & make the best decision they can.

I have a 14 year old cockatiel hen. She's definitely flying less than when she was younger. of course she's also learned that if she tells me she wants to go somewhere I will probably pick her up and bring her that instead of needing to fly herself.
