Great video. Great way to get back to the basics for the new subscribers coming on and good review for the long time subscribers. Way to keep your base interested. The best advice that you have given for hunting scopes is high magnification is rarely beneficial. eEven tho it is tempting to buy the 5-25 power for not much more money. Generally the lower magnification usually always has a bigger field of view which will make it easy to find your target quickly. (target acquisition) If you have a 5-25x 50 scope set on 20 power and you shoulder your gun at a 100 yard distance target you can only see 4-5' of view through the scope but on 5 power you can see up to 30' area though the scope out at a 100 yards. So for me a lower magnification scope like 2.5-10 or 3-9 power scope is always better for a hunting rifle as rarely you are shouting much past 300 yards anyway. A good quality glass scope can give you a good image out to and beyond 500 yards anyway. Additionally most calibers after 400 yards becomes more about bullet drop and wind drift anyway. On the other end of the spectrum if all you do is punch paper targets from a bench rest at long distance with no worries about the target running behind a plum thicket a high power magnification scope could be for you.
I'm just learning about scopes, and he explained it to the simplest level. I've seen other videos that required a PhD in Quantum Physics to understand what the instructor was talking about. So I'll stay with Mr. Cyclops.
Only 3.4 thousand likes on this video? That’s bullshit! I just sent it to at least ten gun guys. Thanks for your scope reviews. Don’t change your delivery style.
Buying a scope depends on what type of situation you are shooting in.Up in Canada where I live,we generally hunt in small open areas or dense bush..A 2 x 7 or 3 x 9 variable scope is more than enough..Great video by the way,you nailed it all.
Great video as always Joe. One tip I can give. For those looking at budget scopes. If you're stuck between two scopes at the same price range, one has EVERY popular feature on the market and the other is basic. I can almost guarantee that the basic scope will have better glass, at least in my experience. You don't get the world for nothing, SOMETHING has got to suffer to let them pack the features in at that price.
Why would ranging targets only work for one magnification? Zeiss gives the reticle characteristics for different magnifications. Does it mean these characterostics may only be accurate for the magnification the reapective scope is calibrated at? Is is unreliable for other magnifications? Why?
Fantastic video Joe. You cover all the basics in < 9 minutes. Since you asked for comments, I like small, lightweight scopes like my Leupold 3-9x33 EFR. One big advantage of a smaller objective is that you can mount the scope close to the bore with low rings. This keeps your bullet trajectory close to the crosshairs. Lightweight: I shoot off-hand, not from a bench, so minimizing weight is important to me. Lastly, love the 4K resolution of your videos!
Right! I forgot that in my comment about fixed-power scopes. I find the adjusting ring on variables usually requires a higher mounting than fixed-power scopes
When I was a beginner, I used to crank the hell out of the adjustment ring closest to my eye, not the magnification ring, I knew that was zoom. Later, I found it just changed the focus on my reticle or crosshairs, making them appear sharp and bold, they didn't do anything for the distance focus or image sharpness thru the scope. It took years to figure that out. Joe - Man you just covered so much in this video, you provided great information, thank you brother
Good explanation. One thing to mention for beginners, if the distances on your side focus don't line up with actual distance, IT'S NOT BROKEN. If your target is 300 yards and your side focus shows 350 for example, there's no need to send it back for repair. Just slowly turn the knob to where your target comes into focus and don't worry what number is on the turret.

I decided to give Arken a shot an bought an epl4 4x16. As soon as it arrived I ripped it open and looked at my neighbors brick house. I looked for around 5 seconds, immediately sat the scope down, walked over to my computer and put my brand new PST gen 2 online. It sold in less time than it took me to attach all the goodies to my scope and mount it. It is amazingly clear and just an absolute beautiful optic in general. My first Arken and will not be my last. P.S. Have also had the pleasure of emailing and texting and they reply very quickly and are a great bunch of guys in general. At least the 2 I’ve personally spoken with.
I forget how many decades ago I found this guy on TH-cam, but I have been a better shot and depending on what I am doing, shooting for practice, hunting, or competition shooting this man knows what he is talking about. He has videos on just about everything on the market. You don't need a 3000 dollar high power scope for hunting or target practice. Now depending on what you want to do with your firearm this guy I guarantee that he has done a video on it. If you watch the video and carefully listen to it and what he says, you are going to be on track for getting the best optic for the money and use that you need it for. The best part is if you have a good sense of humor you are going to have a great time figuring out what, how much, how big, and what type of optic you are going to need and get the right one without breaking the bank. God bless, shoot straight, and be all you can be and enjoy doing it. Have a good morning and a great weekend! 💯💥
Hey Joe, I’ve recently subscribed to your channel, returning to shooting after a 30-year break. Lots has changed in the optics world (lots more choice mainly) and your explanations and honesty are the best. Thanks for your hard work on this and for sharing your experience. 👍
Great vid Joe, excellent advice. I'm in the UK and the number of air rifle shooters I see out with 6-24x56 scopes on top of their sub-12 ft lb rifles just cracks me up. Just insane. The furthest we shoot out to is 50 yards, you don't need to be able to read the label on the rabbit's underpants before you shoot it. On the advice of one of your vids from a while back I tried a 10x44 fixed scope on my Weihrauch and my accuracy went through the ceiling, just so much light, such a clear field of view, I wasn't farting about trying to get the parallax right and it makes my rifle lighter.
As always, I learned something (actually several things) from your video. A great video for beginners (I still consider myself a beginner) but great for more experieced individuals as well.
Thanks Joe. They only comment I have is most people don't need a high-power magnification scope. I've only used 18 power one time and I could have gotten by with 12X magnification. Your field of view is much wider/better with the lower magnification. Thanks again. P.S.
Joe, you ARE the reason WHY I bought 3 scopes from Arken Optics and why I have several other optics on my list for purchase! Also, if I'm gonna get some much needed advice on optics, it's gotta be the man with one eye! "Why?" Because when the body looses one of it's 7 senses, the other senses have to overcompensate for the loss. With that, I know the right eye has to REALLY work to make up for the loss of the left. I am in NO WAY making light of your condition, but because of that, coupled with your delivery and sense of humor, I follow your every word when it comes to optics!
Words of wisdom from Joe. Like others he has learned through trial and error on scopes and now can save others a ton of money and reduce frustration with poor quality products.
For the everyday person and being frugal. ARKEN IS THE WAY. And I have Joe (cyclops) and his videos that got me started Year’s ago. Your the Best teacher on TH-cam Period.
This is superb. An example of the Internet's purpose. I will watch more of your videos after this one. I love your approach and teaching method. Anyone who cannot learn something from this video needs a new scope, a hooker, or more whiskey, but not necessarily at the same sitting. An excellent class to begin my day!
Been open sights all my life, Hawkeye in the army with m-16, got out, back to hunting, got my first scope, leupold vx3 3x9x50. Now habe over 16 scoped rifles, (20years later) today, just learning out what I need and don’t need in a scope. Thank ya ole son. You are opening up a whole new world on my next purchases
Hey brother thank you for your service. I was Navy and had 16 years in before having a date with an IED. We had our rifles, but there was a shortage of scopes and felt lucky to get a red dot. I agree with you this is a great overview of scopes. I had not picked up a firearm since I got out and now look forward to getting on the range.🇱🇷
Truly the simplest ( Comprehensive! ) guide I’ve ever seen. Thanks Joe, honestly your content is the best. I’m missing your mean comments reels though man 💪
Quick, to the point, true, and great words of experienced wisdom - especially for the beginner to start down the trail of his/her journey in the world of scoped shooting. Thanks, Joe!
Thanks Joe for a great video on scopes ,a lot of great information on this video as I’m just starting out with range shooting u have saved me a great deal of money thx cheers
This is hands down the best video I have seen providing an entry-level review on rifle scopes. Unfortunately, I cannot share it with my 10-year-old grandson, who could really use it. If you ever edit a PG version, please let me know.
Amazing video to learn almost everything a newbie needs to know.. Thank you so much for making those educational yet entertaining videos, and hats off to your dad for the golden advice! 😁

Great video once again😊👍. I recommend taking the scope and rings to a good gun shop and have the rings lapped to fit the tube of your scope exactly. This will eliminate any possible movements that can be caused by the rings not making full contact with the scope tube.
I really appreciate your videos Joe 👍 One thing we should address in determining your scope budget is, the duration of time spent looking through that scope. The longer you sit & look intently through a scope, the higher quality, the glass needs to be or your eyes will get strained & you can get headaches. Imagine - Walking through the woods on a squirrel hunt. Your eye is on & off the scope briefly. You can use a cheap scope. But peering at an elk 300 yards away, waiting for him to quarter for a good shot, your eye could be in that scope a long time, you cannot have your eyeball freaking out, when it’s time to take the shot. Not to even mention scope reliability on a $7000 hunt. Informal target practice, you can rest your eyeball whenever you want. Cheap scope is fine. Competition shooting, your eye can be stuck to that scope steady for 5 to 20 minutes. You better have good glass or your last shots will be shit. Gophers- sitting at the edge of a field popping a gopher & waiting for another to come up, pretty intermittent viewing, cheap is fine. Prairie dogs, you could potentially have your eye to glass all afternoon. That glass better be good. Long periods of viewing can be very straining on your eyes & a cheap scope can make you dizzy or even sick. Analyze your intended use. No sense sticking a $500 scope on a $150 gun to shoot squirrels in the yard.
I think using scopes has a learning curve. There is nothing wrong with cheap scopes, they grow with our skill and commitment if we decide to become life long shooters. I can't name a single person that goes and buys a premium scope as their first scope, besides some ultra rich guy that just happens to buy the best rifle hanging on the gun store wall. Even then, starting with the basics and building knowledge is far more valuable. Sure, looking at all my scopes, my low / mid range scope would buy one premium scope, but they fill the need on all the other firearms in my safe. I have also learned buy the best mounts, they make it so much easier swapping rifles and having a rock solid base holding your scope to your rifle. Another must have is an inch lb torque wrench, so many people have issues just because their mounting screws are loose. Last thing, try to mount your scope as level as possible to your rifle, this is critical the further you shoot
@@wowguy3562 right on & well said. 👍 There is a learning curve & after 40 years I’m still learning. Torque driver & I now lap every set of rings. Put on 100 scopes without lapping, but one gave me trouble & now it’s just standard procedure.
@@tommykawasaki9676 Me too, started shooting 22's 50 years ago, still my favorite caliber. Honestly the best piece of equipment/kit I own are these pink surveyors tape streamers I hang down range to get wind reads
Love your videos, Joe. After digesting all the advice in many of your videos I finally decided on a small, fixed power Leupold for my AR. Per your advice, it’s a great balance between size, weight, eye relief, etc. and was the correct choice for the purpose I’ll use it for 99.9% of the time. Thanks for helping me to save $$$ by avoiding the rabbit 🐇 holes.
Dude! This rifle optics 101 badass of a video is exactly what I was looking for, for my daughter🎉! Seriously, this just covered everything for her and she was laughing her ass off, to boot. Now she is ready to spend all my money on a damn fine piece of premium target optics! Thanks Joe!
Have you seen the TH-camr Back Fire’s scope review and where do you coincide with his assessment if at all? I know it’s counterintuitive to hype up your competition. I’ve just come to respect your honest, humble and realistic assessment over time.
Great video and excellent advice. Happy to have seen this video shared on a FB air rifle shooting page based in the UK. Keep up the great work. Lots of love from faraway Malta. My advice? Glass...glass...glass!
Keep these videos coming Every one I watch teaches me another item I did not know. Thanks, Maryland Mike No one should move here IMHO. Gun grabber Blue state.
@CyclopsJoeVideos no, thank you for being a true patriot and sharing your awesome and funny ass videos with the rest of us. Im happy to be an American and have brothers like you and many others that make this nation the greatest country in the world. God bless you, brother!! 🙏
Hey, nice video, I recently moved away from a digital night vision scope to a conventional optic scope (got myself a good quality German scope) in regards to illumination would say most of my hunting is at dusk or dawn in Australia due to the climate (a lot of night hunting) so will need to spotlight at times and illumination is important down here👍
Hi Joe, great video. Loads of common sense here. No B.S. I have just upgraded two older weirauch rifles here in the U.K. with Hawke Airmax 3-9 and 4-12. Lovely scopes for the money on a decent rifle. As the old blues singer once said, (pleasant Joseph, ever heard of him, he toured here in the sixties). About his wife. "You don't put a fifty dollar hat on a fifty cent head!!.
My 2 cents on SFP vs. FFP - The downside to FFP in a variable power scope especially with large range like 5 or 6 zoom range, the reticle becomes difficult to pick up at shorter ranges in poor light conditions. My choice is to use a SFP scope with a 3 zoom range. Of course I don't shoot at super long distances. I hunt only to put food on the table and meat in the freezer. I don't need a 5-7 thousand dollar scope to shoot 600-1200 yards (or meters) with cartridges that cost 3-4 $ each. I don't have any problem with you doing that if it's what you like.
Ex army here. None of this is taught, as we never had scopes, just open sights. I think I am learning more about firearms here than at any time in the past.
Great video. Great way to get back to the basics for the new subscribers coming on and good review for the long time subscribers. Way to keep your base interested. Good explanation. One thing to mention for beginners, if the distances on your side focus don't line up with actual distance, IT'S NOT BROKEN.
Thanks for that Tommy . I can talk scopes all day . It was super hard to try and condense this video down ….It was 48 mins when I started. Lol
There is a learning curve & after 40 years I’m still learning.
Torque driver & I now lap every set of rings. Put on 100 scopes without lapping, but one gave me trouble & now it’s just standard procedure.
@@CyclopsJoeVideos much like how I tried condensing my response. I like talking optics.
@@tommykawasaki9676 Me too, started shooting 22's 50 years ago, still my favorite caliber. Honestly the best piece of equipment/kit I own are these pink surveyors tape streamers I hang down range to get wind reads
Great video! Very informative! I was really hoping for some recommendations to make my search easier but thank you very much for the information!
You're so welcome!
That was good and to the point, thanks
Love your videos, Joe.
After digesting all the advice in many of your videos I finally decided on a small, fixed power Leupold for my AR. Per your advice, it’s a great balance between size, weight, eye relief, etc. and was the correct choice for the purpose I’ll use it for 99.9% of the time.
Thanks for helping me to save $$$ by avoiding the rabbit 🐇 holes.
Glad I may have helped in a small way
Dude! This rifle optics 101 badass of a video is exactly what I was looking for, for my daughter🎉! Seriously, this just covered everything for her and she was laughing her ass off, to boot. Now she is ready to spend all my money on a damn fine piece of premium target optics! Thanks Joe!
Glad to hear man
Great advice. Just got my first scope. Still learning how to 0 it. Which direction to turn the knobs to raise up and down and right and left
Have you seen the TH-camr Back Fire’s scope review and where do you coincide with his assessment if at all? I know it’s counterintuitive to hype up your competition. I’ve just come to respect your honest, humble and realistic assessment over time.
I’ve seen a couple of his videos . Cool channel and seems like really nice guy
Great video, I’m currently in the market for a Lpvo. These videos are very informative. Thanks!
Glad you like them!
Great video and excellent advice. Happy to have seen this video shared on a FB air rifle shooting page based in the UK. Keep up the great work. Lots of love from faraway Malta. My advice? Glass...glass...glass!

Good video! I’ve always been curious about side focus and what they’re for!
Glad it was helpful!

Every one I watch teaches me another item I did not know. Thanks, Maryland Mike
No one should move here IMHO. Gun grabber Blue state.
Very helpful easy to understand and abit of fun also
Great video and well explained. Over the past couple of years I have switched to using FFP scopes.

Thanks, great video!
Hey, nice video, I recently moved away from a digital night vision scope to a conventional optic scope (got myself a good quality German scope) in regards to illumination would say most of my hunting is at dusk or dawn in Australia due to the climate (a lot of night hunting) so will need to spotlight at times and illumination is important down here👍
Exactly what I needed to know. thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Joe that was an excellent crash course vid.
Thank you
Hi Joe, great video.
Thanks. Good info
As always very usefull information understandably presented in a way that makes one remember it with a smile.
Thanks for that !
Ex army here. None of this is taught, as we never had scopes, just open sights.
I think I am learning more about firearms here than at any time in the past.
My new favorite channel. Keep it up
Thanks for that
