      +Ghost81 It sounds silly, but actually that granola bar might contain enough energy to make a difference; a sandwich contains an amount of energy similar to that of a car battery so assuming they found an efficient enough way to convert food into electricity, DX:HR might be pretty realistic in this regard! :D

    Human Revolution was a great return for the series!
    I loved the setting and style but was letdown by the pacing and the "endings".
    Coming out in 2011, the same year as Duke Nukem Forever, its always fun comparing them both in the do's and Dont's of rebooting a fallen franchise.

    I hate when games give you all these guns and fun ways to kill people, but reward you more for playing with a more non-violent approach... I'm looking at you, Dishonored.

      At least there is a variety in both styles of play compared to Dishonored.
      Non-Lethal: Concussion grenades, EMP grenades, gas grenades, P.E.P.S. (energy shotgun), Stun Gun, Tranq Rifle, Fists.
      Lethal: Frag grenades, pistol, automatic rifle, shotgun, rocket-launcher, revolver, machine pistol, etc.

    • @wheatleydl4642
      @wheatleydl4642 8 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Here's the thing, dishonored doesn't punish or reward you more for doing nonviolent. It simply changes the world to fit your playstyle. Since the main gameplay effect of chaos is more weepers and guards, it's rewarding you for doing combat and going in guns blazing by giving you more people to shoot. If you stay stealthy it rewards you for that too, by giving you less guards and less weepers, so it's easier to sneak and less of a toll on your ammo.

    Personally, I liked the integration of the DLC into the main campaign as far as gameplay goes. I admit that when I was first thrown into the section and had all of my hard-earned augmentations taken away from me, I was livid. But I soon began to realize that it was sort of ingenious, because it's like the game is giving you a second chance to make any refinements to your character build right before you get to the final levels of the game. So if there were any augmentations that you regretted choosing over others, this is your chance to make those changes. I also remember reading somewhere that there's a system in place to make sure that you come out with as many or more augmentations than you had coming into The Missing Link, so the game also makes sure that you aren't cheated out of all your hard earned level ups prior to The Missing Link.

  • @Vinyltoast
    @Vinyltoast 8 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    I played the original and the directors cut and I would absolutely recommend the directors cut over the original... I get your point about pacing with the missing link dlc but it really wasn't bad at all, and actually really well polished - don't think it would be that big of a deal breaker.
    But the refined visuals and altered boss fights are a very welcome addition and not forgetting all the preorder bonus pack stuff from the original is really well integrated into the game environments rather than just shoehorned in when you start. Felt like a much more complete package.

      I chose the original since I love the piss filter, the lighting in directors cut is very much 1 step forward 1 step back, some stuff is better but some stuff is worse. The bugs and glitches were the real issue for me, I don’t mind the pacing changes since the version of the original I was forced to pirate came with DLC too and broke the pacing by giving me amazing guns in the first mission.

    I played the Directors Cut recently and I agree with you. The Missing Link totally killed the flow of the entire game for me. Right as I got to the peak of my abilities I got them all taken away and it just felt so awkward and jarring. It's even worse because it took me something like 5 or 6 hours to finish the DLC and by the end of it I was just completely out of patience for the game.
    The Missing Link is something meant to be played on the side, not awkwardly shoved into the main game at the worst possible moment.

      I didnt know there was a difference in story line, but when I played through the directors cut(I did NOT play the normal version), I felt reminded of deus ex1, where kind of the same thing happens and you lose all your equipment and have to go get it back in the UNATCO complex. So from that perspective I really enjoyed it. I think I had a bug though. I only got a few praxis kits back and when I loaded the game later on I had over 30 praxis kits all of a sudden

    I did miss the aiming system, leaning and heavier emphasis on RPG mechanics of the first game, but Eidos Montreal really did a great job of mostly keeping the spirit of the first game in tact. Here's hoping Mankind Divided is at least as good.

      Cybon try a game called styx master of shadows. It's a true stealth game with combat being practically useless with more than one enemy and being straight up disabled at higher difficulties. It even released a sequel last year that was amazing called shards of darkness. Both are extremely good. If you can finish both on the highest difficulty, you have the right to call yourself a true stealth player. Look up a few reviews to check them out. Just play them if you want an amazing stealth experience. It's like the older thief games that run on modern machines and has a tiny goblin as a protagonist who has a few superpowers to help being stealthy like invisibility, creating a clone to distract guards etc. The story is one of the best ones I've played in quite some time and while the voice acting is spotty, it's acceptable for a AA game. It looks gorgeous as all hell and is really vertical and it will take you about 2 - 3 hours to explore each level and more if you're trying to be stealthy and the game is pretty long taking around 12-15 hours on the second hardest difficulty to upwards of 20 hours on the hardest one.

    This was a game that I looked forward to very greatly. Upon release, I plowed through it on the hardest difficulty and had a total blast. Each Deus Ex seems to have their own problems, and in this one it's the bosses and the ending. I personally am not too fond with the energy bar and how it is tied into the take-downs, and the general pointlessness of aggressive play, but it's still one of the best games I've played in recent years.

    I agree bro, one of the best games ever made. But please people, play the Director's Cut. The mission Gggmanlives was talking about is actually one of my favorites in the game, it also goes a lot more into the lore and will make the final boss fight make a lot more sense. Plus, it makes it feel less jarring when you wake up from the life pod and it's suddenly weeks later. So in that way, I think it makes the campaign flow more naturally.

    A litte "how-to" guide for bossfights: get the Typhoon Aug (lvl 2) -> run up to a Boss -> hit them 2-3 times with the Typhoon -> enjoy the cutscene
    It is a neat way of avoiding the one bad part about this game and it is pretty easy to do

    P.S. The directors cut is available for MAC OSX, Aside from an unmodified desktop computer heating up after an hour or so of constant playing, I would say there are no other problems with the port; the added content is a nice touch too.

    To the author - thanks for the review, your opinion isn't dissimilar to mine and really well put. If I'd want to recommend the game to a stranger I'll give him this link.
    PS: I was struggling with the bosses the whole game on hard difficulty level with full ghost approach. After I finished the game I learned that all I had to do is invest into Typhoon augmentation which just cheeses through the bosses with no problem. And if you're playing ghost you have waaay more EXP than you will possibly need (most of the augmentations are for gunslinging, lethal takedowns and other such stuff) so you can max out that Typhoon easily along the way. Also it is completely unnecessary to hack terminals, I personally hated this mechanic after like 3rd terminal and there are dozens of them and they are useless, all they do is give you even more EXP and skippable filler emails to read. So my advice for new players who wants to play stealthy on higher difficulties - take Typhoon and save yourself the busy work of hacking terminals and you'll enjoy the game to the maximum. Also I think Human Revolution is the only relevant Deus Ex right now, since the first one is outdated on more than one levels (shitty AI, crappy unbalanced RPG system, horrendous gunplay and ridiculously stupid story that manages to fill itself with all conspiracy theories in one place, nonlinearity isn't a redeeming factor) and the second one is just the king of mediocrity. Mind that I'm not going to argue with anyone who disagree. It's just my 5 cents.

  • @5persondude
    @5persondude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The only thing i can really disagree with is the performance on PC, at least the Director's Cut. Even though I've only played the Director's Cut of HR (since the original is no where to be found on Steam anymore), it has problems with stuttering, framerate issues with certain settings enabled (I.e. Soft Shadows, MLAA, etc.), and some settings outright don't work like Post-Processing, meaning no gold filter or DOF
    Other than that, great review as always!

    2:28 ..aahh no..i would disagree with you here Gman .. DXHR was even if it runs excellently in PC's it was built with the consoles in mind... the proof of that is that except the big 4 active perks every other perk unlocked with praxis points are case sensitive (falling from a great height automatically triggers the Icarus landing) or passive (you dont even choose if you can use it or not) .. the original Deus Ex had everything as active from F1 to F12 you could choose what to activate and when..but something like this is not possible on a console because you can only have that many buttons on a controller....
    This doesn't obviously mean that this game is bad because of it, DXHR is a MUST BUY in my opinion

    There was actually a 3rd nonlethal weapon in the game called PEPS, which basically acts like a nonlethal shotgun. It can knock enemies out and send them flying with a single shot, granted you're at close enough range. Though it's pretty hard to find, and ammo for it is more scarce than most other weapons.

    I can understand your gripes with the Missing Link but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Buying the Director's Cut is definitely worth it for everything else it brings; even if you don't enjoy the DLC section, you still get new weapons and side options for the rest of the game.
    The upcoming sequel to this game, Mankind Divided looks like it's gonna be awesome. More of those mature themes you mentioned, and hopefully it will balance out your combat and stealth options, because like you said Human Revolution emphasises stealth as the best way to go. It also looks like it will be more fluid in overall combat flow and movement.

    I played the director's cut of this game because I played it on my macbook (and the original version does not have an OSX version).
    I really liked it, but I still prefer Deus ex 1 (there are more enemy types, some really good arg like the robot, a really good story, some really funny line (a bomb, what a shame etc...), the ost are great, the stealth is difficult and funny and JC is really likeable).
    What I liked about HR are the achievements... the missing link factory zero and the main campain pacifist are really funny to take. But in the end it just feel like a downgrade of the original deus ex.
    Also it is one of the few modern game that you can actually play with mouse and keyboard without notice something wrong... I really like when a game does that.
    Yes I know the graphic and the gun gameplay feels better in HR... but I'm not that guy... I really prefer other things.
    I played deus ex 1 just few months ago, and HR few months later, I'm not blided with nostalgia, I just like deus ex 1 more.
    PS. I played the native mac version of deus ex HR, while I played a simple wineskin port for Deus ex 1.
    I also tried Deus ex 2 IW, but it feel so empty, small, and difficult to play with mouse and keyboard that I decided to stop.

      I'm sorry, but Deus Ex's stealth is not difficult unless you're deliberately gimping yourself, the AI is pratically brain dead. There have been many times where I've been crouching right in front of them and they still didn't see me. Only the commandos even have a chance at seeing you, but by the time you encounter them you have the Dragon Sword, the cloak, and maxed out legs, so you can just dash behind them while invisible and hit them in the back for the instant kill.

    • @LiefLayer
      @LiefLayer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sm0ker 1. you don't have to kill. if you kill you don't play a stealth game.
      2. you don't have to be spotted by guards if possible.
      3. the AI is not brain dead. it is just set to be possible to finish the game without kill or be spotted or attack any guards.

    • @LiefLayer
      @LiefLayer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mucawk Ishard the gameplay is not awful, is the best part of deus ex 1.
      it is just different (deus ex 1 is not an FPS is a Stealth-RPG), and it was made for PC (not for console).
      the new deus ex hr is just the usual action "stealth" game... there are few difference between new games gameplay that's why a new gamer only like to play the same game over and over.
      just look at hitman absolution, batman arkham and deus ex human revolution... they are have the same gameplay with few difference.
      Deus ex 1 gameplay is really good, you just need to understand that it was made with a different mindset.
      1. Deus ex 1 is a RPG and it was made the Unreal Engine 1. If you try to play some old FPS (like Unreal tournament 1) you know what level of realism you need to expect.
      Also since it is a RPG it doesn't matter if you are good at FPS, what does matter are your stats... if you try to use this game like a FPS from the start your ass will suffer, but if you try in the end when your stats are high you understand that is too easy to shoot to everybody.
      2. The best thing about deus ex 1 is freedom. You don't even need to kill a boos, if you want you can just escape. You can kill (or try to kill) every NPC. The level design is a masterpiece and every level is a free map (not a corridor like the last game).
      3. Stealth in Deus ex 1 is not forced on you... it is the best method to start the game but, like in real life, there is no cover to help you.
      And the level design is made like in real life... there are few air ducts, but lots of rooms where you can hide.
      Once you almost finish the game you will understand that is easier at that point to kill everybody in your path, but since stealth is lots of fun in that game you will go with the difficult way anyway.
      the only good things about deus ex hr are:
      1. Achievements. (Factory Zero was fun).
      2. the feeling (same feeling of the original)
      3. hacking (it was the only real upgrade in the gameplay design).

    I read the reason why Human Revolution's boss fights were a thing was because of a marketing deal Square Enix had at the time. The bosses were going to be the subject of a series of novels released at around the same time. So they wanted a huge amount of marketing dedicated to them and naturally the story funneled you in that direction.
    If you listen to the developer commentary a huge amount of content with Human Revolution was cut. To the point where you were supposed to have an entire city hub in Montreal but in the final game you just go to a single level there. I'd imagine they originally planned out the boss fights much better originally but it was all shoved in at last minute because of this.

    An important thing to note is that no Deus Ex game has ever had a satisfying ending. Maybe the AI merge in Deus Ex 1 but that's it. Meaning Human Revolution and Mankind Divided actually don't really have anything making them worse than the original. The games are about sweet cyberpunk missions and funny/cool character interactions more than anything. I think the plot has always been more of a backdrop, albeit a fascinating one. For this reason I think Mankind Divided is the best in the series (commence rage lol)

    Though I can respect opinions, I think you forgot to mention the impacts of your choices are handled poorly.
    (Minor spoilers ahead)
    I want to give an example. In one of the first missions, you know, the one where you handle a hostage crisis, you have to deal with a team of terrorists, a bomb, and the teams crazy leader. So you go in, take down the team like the cybernetic badass you are, disarm the bomb, take down the crazy leader, and save the hostages like a boss. The hostages are thankful, but the cops somehow hate you for killing the terrorists and their leader and one of them even flat out said he wanted you to die horrifically. Even the people back at your company are scornful of your tactics like if they are apparently better at your job. You can even hear people say that it would have been better for the hostages to die. Of course, your sitting there thinking "what the hell did I do wrong!?" It's almost like everyone except you are rooting for the terrorists to win and stopping them is the worst thing to happen in a long time.
    Admittedly, my pet peeve is bad dialogue, but I like to play a game where what I do has an impact and people should react normally and not like you are a terrible person unless you do horrible things.

      Agreed, I also didn't like how Pritchard refers to you as either "Mahatma Ghandi himself" or "Attila the Hun" depending on the arbitrary number of people you killed, or how in The Missing Link they constantly say this and that regarding what you did. No idea. I purchased a copy and drm rejected it. Looked it up and apparently it's banned. Even the retailer didn't know and gave me a refund. "Banned for high impact violence including depictions of frequent mutilations." Refused classification.

    Interesting you did not talk about the level design which is the best thing about it. The branched linear approach depending on the players abilities

    Great review Gman! Obviously wanting to keep it spoiler free but was wondering what you thought of the endings in this game? I'm with you 100%, loved this game, and while I like they put a bit more emotion into the series and made it a bit less philosophical, I found the resolutions to the story were all sort of lacking substance. Just curious what you think. Either way love the channel man, keep it up!

    Surprised you did not like the Missing Link, but even so I would recommend the director's cut because you don't need to fire a single shot during the boss fights in it.

    Do you think you could review some Deus Ex mods like TNM, Nihilum and Revision, on your mod corner? They're excellent, done by extremely tallented and passionate developers with a lot of love and care put into it, and I feel they deserve more attention.

      +Gggmanlives If it's because you don't have a key you can get one from the German Gamestop using a VPN.

    Having played both the PC version when it came out and the Wii U version i can honestly say the Wii U version is better. Even if loading times on the console are horrendous, the Wii U controller gives the game a fantastic feeling that more than makes up for it.

      +brunocar No amount of word will accomplish anything with fanatical people like.For starters the fucking snickers,repetitive and far too long levels(but that one is objective opinion),broken shooting,how easy is to mess your hacking game because it was made for console controllers,lack of alternative routes (and no,going through an airvent for 50th time is not much of alternative),the lacking dialogue.

    it surprises me how nobody mentions this game is so similar to Blade Runner. Watch the movie a few times and play this game and u will be amazed

    Fully upgraded cloak and revolver makes all of the boss fights pretty easy. It was a bit annoying how the wall smash ability would often kill someone on the other side without forewarning, ruining a non-violent run.

    I can't get this game to run on Windows 10. Whenver I start it up its just a black screen and I cant turn it off because in Task Manager it says access denied when I try to close it.

    This was the first Deus Ex game I've played when my dad got it. I've got to say I like this version over the original Deus Ex mostly down to the improved shooting and engaging story. Though I still really love the original Deus Ex as well.

    I thought Missing Link was one of the best sections of the game. The transition in the director's cut could have been better though.
