    I got hit with POP about 15 years ago in NJ 287 south near Edison. I was in left lane and trooper got me, my Beltronics detector didn't alert quick enough. The trooper walks up (stripes on his arms) so I'm thinking I'm done, looks at dash and says "what's the matter? Doesn't that thing work?" I said: It can't beat your instant on unless someone is in front of me. He broke out laughing and gave me a warning

    When I sold radar detectors I used to tell customers that wanted to go for the "Cheaper" model. You are buying this to essentially avoid added costs such as the ticket itself, raised insurance, etc...Youll pay more up front but pay a whole lot less later. Also, Vortex Radar. You may want to look up the term, "Listener Fatigue". It essentially means people will tune away from you if the audio becomes too annoying. May I recommend you turn off, or turn the audio waaay down on the MPH radar tools.

    Great videos!!. I understand that these are not COP detectors or POLICE CAR detectors, however I have a Valentine 1 and have received 2 tickets using it. Both times, the cop has been headed towards me. They then turn around and light me up. I look at my speed and when they tell me how fast I'm going, I can agree that they are very close to what I observed. My problem is the Valentine 1 NEVER, NEVER EVER registered the slightest beeping and no lights lit up. I do believe the cops when they told me the speed. I just dont understand why the unit didnt register. Thanks in advance for your help or advice. I recieved the last ticket yesterday. I purchased the Uniden r7 this morning.

    I live in WA state, and have a cheap Cobra XRX9370. The other night I got pulled over by a cop traveling in the opposite direction on a rural highway. My detector threw out a "P" alert a few seconds before he passed me in the other lane. I started slowing down, but then he whipped around and pulled me over for doing 50 in 40. Fortunately he let me off with a warning. So if he got me in POP mode, it sounds like he really didn't have proof of my true speed.
    Also, while traveling home that night my detector detected 2 additional P signals at different times just as I was passing a car coming from the opposite direction, so it seems they're using it here in WA. It doesn't seem to be of much use with my detector since I don't get warned until the cop is pretty much on top of me...

If you watch a video I do showing how to set up a Redline or something, you'll see many of the same settings explained. USA Mode helps improve performance of the RX65. It's similar to band segmentation on the Redline. TSR, Highway mode, X on/off, etc., all that'll be similar to other detectors.

    While POP isn’t technically evidential, how many people are going to challenge a pop ticket and will the officer even be honest about the methodology of confirming speed? After all, police officers are expert witnesses and not to mention trained to be able to visually estimate speed. That estimation paired with a loose statement of “I estimated the vehicle speeding, and confirmed with radar” is going to beat you every time. And also the paragraph says “should” not, not SHALL not.

  • @uscg8168
    @uscg8168 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    POP is from only one manufacture, it has not been discontinued, But has never been popular. It is used by very few departments, and only a few of the officers use the option. Traffic Officers which are savvy use it. Most officers never lock the speed, nor do they use audio, and they only get the tracking history on the target, when they are going to issue a ticket anyway. (not an issue) The point behind POP is to minimize advance warning, and while detectors have made advances to look for the POP its at a cost of false signals. This helps the officers and means more tickets, I recommend you do a reception test at long distances compare an constant on beam, an officer beam, then POP compare the warnings between all of them and see how POP actually gives less warning. (issue #2 is false, it has nothing to do with range, and is in fact a non issue) They have been switching diodes on and off for years. The range issue has to do with a strong signal required to get a reading and also the need for the target to be closer to the radar and in the beam to separate the signal from other targets. These are not false alerts, you know radar reads targets depending on the size and return of the signal. I like your reviews, just offering some input. The BEE is a great radar, very accurate. We call it the Killer Bee because it is bad news on Radar Detectors.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Yeah POP is not discontinued and you're absolutely right that it provides less warning, especially if detector users have POP detection turned off. ;)
      How prevalent have you found POP to be used in practice by LEO's?

    • @uscg8168
      @uscg8168 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vortex POP is used but the point is that officers trigger the radar which also makes detection more difficult. Years ago MPH had a Radar called the Vindicator, the officers could pop the trigger and ck speeds, without setting of radar detectors. They still do it with the POP on the handheld MPH Speedgun's, and the BEE mover. Also Kustom Talon will not allow you to leave the beam on, forcing you to trigger the beam. Those that get a Ticket do get a signal, in the end when the officer gets tracking history, but they do not realize the advance warning they missed. This advance warning missed can also be from Radar units that are slowly turned on and off. The reason is that at long distances the signal is week and like you said produce a "minor Alert" something confused with a "Flase Alert". Regardless this is the frontier of radar detection and its not exclusive to POP. Radar Guy does a Video with several radar detectors and show how they respond to a radar triggered on and off for 5 seconds, at 5000 and 8000 feet. This video shows how normal radar turned on and off can be hard to detect and how some detectors can miss it all together. This is why I recommended such a video to you, but taking it to a higher level showcasing POP. The new technologies are for POP but are designed to compare a signal which is triggered and designed to give you better advance warning.

    • @SuperTurbocoupe
      @SuperTurbocoupe 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Henry Devilliers #2 issue is not false, it's a fact that increased target range while using POP ends up with some rather large errors in measurement, and while you are correct that they have been switching diodes on and off for years, that is how we know there is a transitional stage during the activation of the oscillator. The POP modes are within that transitional stage, the software on the gun *attempts* to compensate for that stage, but since it's a mathematical model being used, the accuracy is not up to standards for measurement for use in a court setting. My suggestion to you is if you are using POP mode to ticket people, then you should do as most LEO's do...lie in court and tell them nothing about using POP mode and lie about having a tracking history and all that. But since you are a cop, I am quite sure you are already familiar with the perjury thing...

    • @uscg8168
      @uscg8168 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im a person who has submitted type acceptance to the FCC for microwave devices and had them approved. All mixing is in the turnstile, the signal which gives you your Doppler comes out of the turnstile. The errors which you refer to would have to happen in the mixing stage while the gunn is warming up, the fact is you can sweep the gunn at a very high rate faster than any warm up and the turnstile produces a stable output. Any failure in the device, gunn or diode or voltage results in a shutdown and leaves nothing for the radar to measure. I can talk facts and give you real issues or we can B.S. and point fingers. POP is a well designed technology, and serves a purpose that is to keep the radar gun from giving advance warning, when it is used on a speeder, it is designed to be triggered and get a history, maybe front and rear antennas etc.. because that is what officers do with a ALL radars. Because it is high tech does not mean it is filled with operational errors or made to be used in a deceptive manner or something is being hidden and officers using it in a manner less than required by the courts. The user manuals are up front POP works and does what its suppose to do. POP was developed because motor cops discovered the sweep rates on radar detectors were getting very slow, the old BEE could get a reading before some went off. That is where the catalyst for developing POP came from.

    • @uscg8168
      @uscg8168 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vortex Radar You mentioned that an issue with POP is lack of a tracking issue. Its not an issue, its a specific design to allow you to read a target and at the same time not set off radar detectors. This allows radar to stay blind to traffic, I you do not need tracking history of targets, if you are not going to issue a ticket. The radar operator In a millisecond can go from POP to full transmit, if he wants and needs tracking history, just hit the trigger for tracking history. set off all detectors!!! It does not matter at that point! That is not an issue, its an operational tactic, "one shot one kill"; Issue2 manual reads "separation of cars" your reading and adding the word "ERROR" and C.Y.A. those issues are from marketing B.S., I would be glad to provide a detailed explanation. Its simply has to so with the separation of cars, and a radar and how it bounces around from car to car, that is not "error" that is how a radar reads traffic. Each department should interpet its laws, and define how POP and tracking history should be used with this feature and product. That is not an error that is "legal use" being established.

If someone is going the speed limit why would he give himself away to possible radar detector users behind the person going the speed limit? Your right in the fact that POP can not be used in court as evidence, but that is not what it was designed for. From what I've gathered is that POP is designed to remain hidden from radar detectors as to not give advance warning. Is it a fact that POP is not being used or are you assuming so?

      Vortex I read the article and I played the POP game. The argument that keeps coming up is "POP is inaccurate" therefore it is not permissible evidence. POP IS NOT DESIGNED FOR PERMISSIBLE EVIDENCE!
      Scenario: A blue car is driving the speed limit, and 1 mile behind that car is a speeding Red car with a radar detector. A police officer uses POP to sample the Blue car and the Red car's radar detector does NOT go off. The Blue car is going the speed limit therefore the police officer does NOT use INSTANT ON and does not give himself away to the Red car's Radar detector. Now the Red car comes along speeding with no advance warning and then BAM! the Police officer uses POP on the RED car and because he is speeding the police officer follows up with INSTANT ON for tracking history that can be used for permissible evidence in court.
      Does this make sense? ^^
      POP may not be accurate but it's close enough to decide whether to give himself away to radar detectors by using instant on as a follow up after using POP

    What I have seen is that radar detectors have a hard time with real POP Radar and also with radar that is ran in a fashion which you all "quick Trigger". I have seen TH-cam test by others, with a Bushnell Radar gun completely blind a V1 ten out of ten times when pop mode is turned "OFF", only by turning POP on do you seem to pick up the triggered radar and also the POP mode. If you place some distance down the road, rather than a detector in the throat of the antenna, you are going to get a much diminished alert. The idea that you can turn it OFF because POP is not used is a bad idea, because it seems that any short burst of radar and at range will be a challenge. I have done test, and in fact the POP was designed because officers discovered years ago that they could quick trigger and so M.P.D. designed to an automated form of this called POP. Kustom Signals also has a form of this trigger, but it is less automated. They also have a few other tricks on reserve and approved by the F.C.C..

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Henry Devilliers Yeah the Bushnell is fast, faster than any police radar gun, but it's not representative of what law enforcement units are like.
      I can test out POP later at a distance and see if that changes things.
      As for POP detection, I've found that enabling it on a RD compromises QT detection on other bands because the RD has to spend so much time looking for 33.8 POP. Turning off POP improves QT detection and so that would be preferred. :)

    • @uscg8168
      @uscg8168 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The development of the POP was from K band radars, which were QT. The Vindicator by CMI was super fast and could get a speed before detectors could sweep the K-band! Other units like the BEE 36, Decatur, were also doing it, in moving mode. The idea for a wider KA band and POP was to complicate the detection circuits and place radars all over the spectrum and hidden in the noise. Today you can get better detection range of ka units and the pop mode is more effective for the officer at longer ranges on the k band, because the detectors are de-tuned . I cant imagine the Radar detector manufactures only looking at 33.8, but I cant talk for what they do, or the logic. They should do something to speed up the circuits. The MPH Speedgun was superfast compared to any other handheld, my concern is that I can duplicate this all day long with a Talon, Decatur, and other handheld radars, and as long as I am doing QT you can not deny that the detectors were blind, as you demonstrated this and this can diminish advance warning.

    hey there vortex, I got a couple of questions I'd love for you to answer... you seem extremely educated about all of this and I'm a greenhorn. I just ordered a Whistler CR90 for my very first radar detector for 40% off. It has this pop detection feature and I'm curious if I should have that setting on or not. I live in east Tennessee and I'm unsure about what type of radar detectors are used in this area and I need some tips on how to best tune my detector to keep me ticket free! Any advice would be much appreciated!

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dragonslayer1483 Yeah that's an inexpensive detector but it will really let you down performance-wise compared to what else is out there. It's sadly a very poor performer and I wouldn't recommend it. You save some $$ up front and get owned when you have to start dealing with the tickets, insurance costs, lawyer fees, and all that jazz. Is it worth it? I personally don't think so... Check out these tests with the CR85. (Same performance as the CR90, just without the GPS functionality.)
      www.rdforum.org/showthread.php?t=44373
      www.rdforum.org/showthread.php?t=38256
      POP detection doesn't matter. Turn it off.
      What part of TN are you in? If you're in the Appalachians especially, something like the Redline will be ideal. A Whistler will get destroyed there.

    • @dragonslayer1483
      @dragonslayer1483 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vortex ouch... that's a tough pill to swallow. although I live near lots of curvy roads most of my driving is on the highway, and luckily cops aren't hardly ever on the curvy roads. the reviews and ratings for the cr90 appear to be very positive, so hopefully it will work for me... thanks for your help

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      dragonslayer1483 Yeah that's just one example. Straightaways are easier to detect radar on since there's less to block the signals, that's true, but even in those situations you may very likely run into instant on where cops turn off their radar guns while they sit and wait. In those situations, your goal is to detect him when he's clocking cars up ahead of you. A more sensitive detector will give you a better chance of doing that while a less sensitive detector will sit quiet as people up ahead are being clocked.
      The CR90 is not a bad detector. It can go beep like most any detector :D but its performance is pretty lacking these days. There's better options available if you're on a budget if you search around.

    Sorry to comment on such an old video, but say you have X on still, but pop off. If you turn X off, and pop on, will the unit not having to scan X equal out to its added scanning of POP? roughly. not asking for scientific exact.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      X band is an extremely small amount of bandwidth to scanning so turning it off doesn't really impact performance. POP makes a big difference since a detector has to be so hyper aware to scan and search for POP.

    • @steviegene4006
      @steviegene4006 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The radar detector still scans x band whether it is on or off. At least with the V1 anyways, so no performance difference. Per V1 technician.

      gmofftarki You know, surprisingly, not many people run radar detectors! That's what I figured (I don't have a detector myself, though I'm considering grabbing one when I get a newer vehicle), but I was surprised at how much effort seems to be spent on trying to foil the things. Similarly, from watching other videos, I can't even imagine how much money is spent developing anti-jamming tech and whatnot for the laser guns, when jamming is going to be an even more niche pursuit.
      Is it just hype for the sake of selling new radar guns to police agencies every year? I can't imagine the difference in profits justifies the expense of replacement.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      gmofftarki Yeah, I don't think so either. What I've found that officers look for is things like compact size, affordability (with slashing budgets), batteries they can replace/charge easily, and so on. The antijamming stuff is a bit of a niche thing like you said.

      As a complete aside, have you had the chance to test how the android-integrated detectors you have work with android auto cars and/or head-units (Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX, for example, and I think the Sonata? has it built in). I'd be interested in seeing whether you can get the display through the big screen/car audio. Another thing I'd be curious about is whether it can pop up on the big screen using default nav rather than google maps, but that's perhaps asking a bit much.
