@@ianthereader Yes, you should do it! It's less stress for sure.. there is not so much weight on place "eleven" and youo have the possibility to sneak in a few "weirder" choices, books that you do not actually consider be the best by classical standards, but nevertheless left an indistinguishable impression.

I just found your channel and have now subscribed! I am currently reading East of Eden, I’m about halfway through and I’m loving it so far. I know what you mean about the annotating 😂 The chapter where Lee, Adam and Samuel discuss Cain and Abel just made you think so much about life.
I’m also rereading LOTR at the moment, currently on The Two Towers. I relate so much to what you said about feeling like you’d found your friends there. I was 8 when the first movie came out and I seen them all in the cinema, then I read the books for the first time around 11/12 years old. It’s such a big part of my life.
You’ve also convinced me to read It. The only Stephen King I’ve read is The Mist and I’ve been trying to decide where to go next and now I have.
Sorry about the long comment 😂

So glad you found this video, as we seem to have very similar tastes!! Reading East of Eden and LOTR at the same time is peak! And YES, all of Lee’s scenes are full of gold, but particularly when he is talking with Adam and Samuel. SO GOOD.
I do hope you love It when you read it! I also recommend 11/22/63 if you want something a bit less “horroresque” and The Dead Zone or Misery if you want something that won’t take a long time to read!

What a list! The way you talked about The Bluest Eye is how I felt about The Color Purple by Alice Walker, so I am definitely picking that up soon. Loved Pillars of the Earth, my only complaint with that book is that I could've done without the pages and pages of super detailed description of the engineering behind the construction of a cathedral, I got to a point where I mostly just skimmed those sections, but it has my most hated antagonist that I have read. I read Boy Swallows Universe when I was a judge for The Booktube Prize a few years ago with my old channel. I think I ranked it second in the six books I read for that first round, Patsy by Nicole Dennis-Benn ranked above it for me. Have you watched the series that they did of it on Netflix? I was a fan of his journalism originally and just went and saw his book "Love Stories" at QPAC as a play. New subscriber!!! Congratulations on 3 years. We share many favorites. I go back and forth between 'It' and the Stand for my favorite SK novel but 'It wins because of the characters; I feel like every one of them are close personal friends. The Fellowship tops my LOTR list because it is such a wonderful introduction to the whole world; the scene of the Nazgul rising out of the dark after running and waiting so long was electric) I will be on the look out for all the titles I have not read. Perhaps you have already talked about this, but have you read 'The Damnation Game by Clive Barker? That was my first CB novel and it is one of my tops. Thanks for the info and again congrats!!!

And, I have read all your top seven, and eight out of 10. Pretty amazing. And ,I’ve added the missing two books to my library reading list!
I’ve read East of Eden, but I think I was somewhere around 20 when I did, so I’m gonna go back and reread it based upon what you said as well as other commenters. For a large number of your top ten authors, as is my pattern if I really like a book, I’ve read most or even all of the author’s oeuvre. That includes Lamb, King, McMurtry, Zafon, and Steinbeck on your list.
I haven’t watched any of your other material yet, so maybe you’ve already read some of these, but since our tastes seem so highly aligned, I’d think you might enjoy some of these books or authors. All of these are in my top ten:
    - anything written by Haruki Murakami
    - A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
    - Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
    - All the Kings Men by Robert Penn Warren, my #1
Anyways, great job, and looking forward to seeing your next episode, as well as catching up on the past three years 😊Be well 🙏

We have a tiny used book store in my small town, that is owned by a man in his 80s, he opened it just because he loves books so much, and It is on his favorites lists too, and he will argue with anyone to defend it. He told me in his opinion It, The Stand and Hearts In Atlantis are the greatest Stephen King books of all time. Though he wished there was less horror bits in the last. So I am hoping I love It as much as everyone else seems to. :)

Don't know why this video popped in my recommendation but I'm glad it did. I do like these kind of lists because if somebody liked so much I dunno maybe I'm missing something. I'm not American but Brazilian (and 54 so fairly old haha) but those books are pretty much universal. My all time favorite is George Orwell's 1984. I begrudgingly read it in 1985 just because it was required in my highschool but to my surprise I loved it! It's bleak as it can be but my country was re-democratizing after 2 decades of military regime and the Eurhythmics' movie soundtrack that came out around the same time made it so much more compelling. Wow Lonesome Dove that good? I always thought it must be a feel good book with a catchy title (like Thorn Birds haha. I know I know totally different genre but you know what I mean.) Anyway I'm gonna give it a try. Cheers!

Thank you so much for watching!! It must have been an interesting experience to read 1984 in 1985. I wonder if the content was more reminiscent of society then or today.
Thank you so much for watching!! Please come back and let me know what you think of Lonesome Dove if you read it. It is perhaps the most shocking for me on this list as well- by all accounts it shouldn’t be as good as it is, but the novel is stunning.

@@ianthereader Just finished "Lonesome Dove." And OMG it's quite long (or I should say thick but I read it in my kindle so sign of the times haha.) Anyway it's crazy fun adventure. Great plot, memorable characters and most of all great dialogues. Then oh okay he wrote the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain. Then I checked who's playing who in the TV series and ohhh the naturally stone-faced Tommy Lee Jones as Call is just perfect (and hilariously enough indie darling Steve Buscemi is there.) I just wonder how many countless books there are around that is this good but somehow you miss. Steinbeck's "East of Eden" maybe one of them. One of those that the movie is so famous you just fed up to go check the source (Gone with the wind anyone?) Next on my list. Cheers!

Well, I couldn't agree more about Lonesome Dove -- what an amazing book. I hate westerns, but it is also on my list of favorite books ever. (Greg from Supposedly Fun read it this year and was blown away by it.) I loved Shadow of the Wind as well -- such an unusual, beautiful book. I was surprised by so many things in that book! I put Boy Swallows Universe on my wishlist -- that really does sound great! I'm moving East of Eden from my classics bookshelf to the stack of books that I'm hoping to read before I die -- so chances are I'll probably read it. 😂 I did read Goldfinch, and am a big fan of it, but I would bet money that The Devil All the Time is far, far better than The Goldfinch. It's interesting that you mentioned reading one of your favorites only once because I feel the same way about a few of mine...they were so mind boggling for me that I really didn't want to take a chance that a reread might change some part of my experience or opinion.
We share a few books that I've only read once because I really fear changing my opinion on, they were so magical to me at the time I read them: Lonesome Dove, Pillars of the Earth and Lord of the Rings. I do go back and read some of my favorite sections, but I've never reread cover to cover. Maybe I will some day!
I love your LOR family history!❤...Wish I could say the same, but I didn't read until I was THIRTY!..some how I broke down and read a 25c copy of The Hobbit and then I was off to the races. All that time wasted when I could've known that world!

Ok I have to share how I came to read Pillars. About 26 yrs ago I was traveling home from visiting family. I had a small tote bag I was carrying around the airport. Got on the plane and this book had found it’s way into my bag. No idea how although that was before the airport restrictions we have now so maybe I left my bag for a second or just wasn’t paying attention. I had only really read King and Koontz but I was so weirded out at the time that I read it convinced the universe gave it to me for a reason and I loved it. I really enjoyed The Gargoyle! I actually read that one as part of a reading vlog way back when I first started my channel. More people need to read that one!
The Night Film has been one I’ve been wanting to get to for ages, but I honestly forgot about it! I will definitely move it back onto the TBR!!

I have read Lonesome Dove this year it was very powerful. Read Pillars of the earth way back and others in that series it was very good. Loved IT was a runner in those days and and to stop running near large gutters early in the morning! Love Toni Morrison but have never read The Bluest Eyes. Tolkien is the best your family testing your knowledge sooo funny! Had to laugh when I got to your no 1 East of Eden, one of my current novels that I'm reading. Enjoyed your reviews.

I just found your channel, and don't yet know your taste, but I have a suggestion nevertheless: The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield. It is a story within a story: a novice writer is hired to write the life story of a famously-reclusive, mysterious novelist. It is an homage to 19th-century literature, especially gothic, mystery, etc. Personally, I found the prose beautiful, although I know that some people find the descriptiveness a little bit overdone. I also think the characters are beautifully drawn. Setterfield did a good job (IMO) of establishing the mood and tone of the setting itself as well as the atmosphere under which the young writer must operate, in order to get the aged novelist's true life story. Also, the unabridged audiobook is probably the best audiobook I've ever listened to. The voices of two actresses chosen for the audiobook couldn't be a more perfect match for the two personalities they are portraying.

East of Eden transcends fiction. I have a compulsion that I must buy a copy of East of Eden if I see it. I just buy them and immediately leave them at bus stops, park benches, train stations, pretty much anywhere. The next time I walk by that place the book is always gone. If you are in Australia and have picked up a random discarded copy of East of Eden, I hope it has left a mark on you. Timshel, my friend, the only word that truly matters. Use it wisely.

      @ianthereader  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Oh my gosh. You get it. I do the exact same thing- if I see a copy of East of Eden at a thrift store or used book store, I can’t not buy it. I just get it and shove it into the hands of anyone who will take it. Thanks for making me feel seen!
      Thou mayest, my friend.

@@ianthereaderthe only thing I’ve read of Steinbeck was The Log of the Sea of Cortez. Basically non-fiction. I loved it very much. Humorous, compassionate. Been hearing a lot about East of Eden. Will have to have a look.

You are correct about East of Eden but how have none of the classics cracked your top 10? Have you read War and Peace? You seem to have all the right criteria for analyzing books so I’m surprised you don’t have a second classic in your list. You might try The Master and Margarita.
