    Hi Nikki. I adopted a dog that appeared to have a similar skin condition many years ago. No tick-related illnesses that I was aware of. My veterinarian recommended that I add omega 3 fatty acids to his diet. For what it's worth, it did the trick!

      @@NikkiDelventhal If you keep an eye on his coat and hairloss it can also be cause by skinmites that eat the hairfolicoles. In that case the same medicine that you use for flees and ticks can help. I hope he is doing better. They dogs are so cute and you're great with them.

    Niki love your dogs, in doing so please refrain from letting Rodney from riding in your lap. A few years ago I saw a traffic accident
    when I came to help, I saw that the woman in the driver’s seat was okay, but the dog she had in her lap was killed (broken neck).

    • @jakelesnake
      @jakelesnake 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@katekaos honestly she can be a huge idiot sometimes, I definitely feel like Rodney was a mistake for her to adopt. she cut her available dog food supply in half by adding another mouth to feed, now has 2 dogs to look out for and Rodney doesn't even look like he wants to be there half the time. He's happiest moments are in the van comfy, he's a lap dog and deserves a nice big house. It honestly felt pretty selfish of her to adopt him considering her cramped conditions and lifestyle.

      @katekaos 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@jakelesnake I’m sure he’s in better hands with her than wherever he was before. I think he was in that Utah shelter. But yes it’s hard to have bigger dogs in a van full-time. She gives them a lot of love but wish she was safer with them while driving and outside. There are a lot of predators and daytime attacks nowadays.

    I am not sure if it is the same thing or not, but I took in a rescue dachshund/beagle mix about 14 years ago and he had what the vet called heat spots all over his body. The spots were where the hair was falling out and were bald. But he constantly scratched at the spots. The vet felt it was due to his previous owners feeding him nothing but human food scraps, which is what they told me they had fed him. it took me about 6 months to get him on a good dog food, he hated it at first, then with a special bath shampoo within a year it was all cleared up. Wishing the best for your little guy Rodney! Super glad he found a great home!

    Vet tech here 👋🏻 worked in dermatology. Did you see a dermatologist? There’s a condition we commonly see in poodles, but any breed can have it, called sebaceous adenitis. It doesn’t look exactly like it, but hard to say. Vasculitis of some sort, maybe. He should have a derm take a biopsy of one of those lesions to confirm what’s going on. I wouldn’t have anyone but a derm do it - they know how to select the best spots to sample. Hope you get some answers!

    • @NikkiDelventhal
      @NikkiDelventhal  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Omg thank you for reaching out! I did see a derm! We did a scrape and a skin punch test! Bingo on the extreme vasculitis, they said the scarring is so deep! They said perhaps the tick illnesses are hitting hard so we’re trying that and it seems to be happening less and less so let’s hope! Thanks for the input this is so helpful!

    • @LisaRichter92
      @LisaRichter92 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@NikkiDelventhal ah, excellent, so glad you saw a derm! Now the question can be if the vasculitis is from the tick bites themselves or the tick-borne disease since both can cause it - I guess if he was getting new lesions those would be from the tick-borne disease. He is seeing the best folks to treat him for it. Glad he’s having less issues with it!

    I've experienced the hair loss several times with rescue and foster dogs. Every time, after ruling or other conditions from the vet, we turned to a grain and legume free diet. Often, a raw diet from the local meat market of liver, hearts, etc. have the fastest/best results.

    tip for the sandfly bites - burn them with your hairdryer. You will get about 8hrs of relief each time, and after you burn them a couple each (usually 3 or 4 for me) the itch will be permanently gone. Some people can itchnfrom bites for weeks with no relief. I got destroyed in Thailand from them years ago and had purple hyperpigmention scarring from them for months. I tried steroids, topical steroids, antihistamines, topical antihistamines, tiger balm, ice packs, local made salves etc and it wasnt until someone in a forum said to burn them with the hottest thing you could stand did i get any relief. Now i use that method if i get bites down in the keys or anywhere in FL really. Life saver.

    At 10:41 she's in Sparks, NV - NOT Reno. TA is a nice truck stop however the Alamo a mile east, and on the other side of the freeway is better, cleaner, and nicer if you're going to shower. If you look past the "Pee jug" at 13:43 you'll see the Burger King that my friends and I have coffee at twice a week. They're nice at that BK and when the pandemic hit they locked the doors so we ordered drive thru and left one parking spot open where we'd get out folding chairs and hang out. We met a lot of nice truckers too during that period.

    G'day Nikki, Michelle here from beautiful Jervis Bay in Australia. It's actually 5.55am Saturday 17th as I text this, so Good Morning! I have been a HUGE fan of yours since your Prius days and remain loyal to your channel as you are the greatest ❤ antidepressant ever!!! One of my most fave vids was when you climbed a massive tree and slept up there. "Wild thang, you make my heart sing!" Good to see home depot hasn't changed it's PAWlicy 😂 Little Rodney is gorgeous and besotted with you! Who wouldn't be, you are heaps of fun!! On a more serious note, my cat used to have patches of hair loss on his head. I popped into a vet for a quick chat at front desk and she said, make a weak tea like solution of Betadine liquid and water and with cotton wool dab it on the bald patches. It totally cleared up and never returned. Do it regularly. Just in a little cup add say a tsp of betadine, then just a bit of water to form a weak tea solution. Saturate cotton wool and dab on regularly, hopefully it's in a place he can't lick easily. Cortisone should be avoided if possible. The vet I saw agreed. Anyway beautiful woman, keep smiling😃 and keep cutting those carrots like a playboy bunny 😂 Stay safe and happy! Big squeezy hugs for our favourite boy Campy - my nickname for him. What an amazing friend you have in him. The magical still shots you have with you and Camp together are just awesome! I have never been to the USA, so it's been a joy to see your beautiful country through your eyes and armchair travel - well usually I'm horizontal 😂 See you Nik on the next one. Not trying to be a Karen, just some info. It is dangerous to let a dog sit on your lap while driving. In an accident they can be hurt by the steering wheel. Also a seat harness for the front seat for Camper could save him injury or worse. Although your s safe driver there are a lot who aren’t. Having worked for a Vet for many years I have seen dogs injured in even minor accidents. Your dogs are very fortunate to have a mom who cares so much about them and all dogs. Stay safe.❤

    As someone who gets ingrown toenails every time I clip them, here are some tips: 1) shove a cottonball under the nail as far back as you can, it helps gradually lift the nail. 2) take a pocket knife and slowly shave the center of the top of your nail so it slowly lifts the nail, don’t do it too thin, but thin enough you’ll feel the difference. 3) sterilize a pocket knife with a small point and use that to lift the nail. It hurts but it’s temporary. Hope it helps!

Our friends dog had a bare patch on its backside due to fleas, and what the vet prescribed did not work. The sulphur worked like a charm, and within a month had healthy skin and shiny hair. Tea tree, cedar and eucalyptus oils also work well. All are safe for the dogs also. We have three GSDs and use oils to treat their bites. Please purchase high quality oils and not from Walmart or other chain brands.

    I had a dog with similar skin issues. it turned out he was allergic to lots of things. Lots of food proteins, so he had to go on a hydrolyzed protein food. He also had contact allergies with vinyls and plastics that would irritate him. So plastic toys and bowls and collars with coated fibers were out too. He got a leather collar, a metal food bowl and some higher end toys, to go with his new food. Lot of hypoallergenic treats and things, and it cleared up.

    Enjoy the content. One or two words of advice. Always wash or clean your dogs paws before they get back in your vehicle after walking in parking lots and stores. Those lots and retail floors are beyond filthy with fecal matter, oil, dirt and a bunch of other things they will pick up on their paws and bring back into your seats, bedding and floor area.
    Also may not be wise to let the dogs lick your face, there is a lot of stuff you just dont want to risk getting fron their mouth

    Hey Nikki! Our pup Greta had something similar, if not the same thing. She was a rescue and we went to vets from the East Coast where we adopted to her to the west where we eventually lived. The only vet who was able to sort her out was Dr. Jean Greek who owns the Dermatology and Animal Clinic for Animals in Santa Barbara and Ventura, California. Not sure if you'll be headed south any time soon, but I would HIGHLY recommend going to see her. Our pup had this patchy hair loss issue for years, stumped every vet, and she figured it out. And she's just an amazing wealth of knowledge. Best of luck!

    Hey Nikki, I tried the soaking ingrown toenails in salt water many years ago, was also told after soaking them to put some aftershave on the area around the ingrown to help toughen up the skin by a doctor. this was before getting sent to see a specialist in the hospital. Like others have most likely suggested try cutting a small v in the nail to remove the bad bit of nail and let it grow again. If it doesn’t get better best getting it checked out. Sadly none of these worked for me as the ingrown’s never cleared(both big toes at the same time) so ended up with full removal of both nails including the nail bed destroyed so they would never grow back again.
    I would avoid any hikes that involves scrambling over boulders where you can put pressure on the toe with the ingrown as it could delay the healing.
