Badger737 I am fed up of British ESC commentators. I mean it seems they dislike ESC so damn change them. Even though, I have to admit that some of the non-musical jokes like "Not even Franco's secret service could make this win" (Spain 2009) were good.
Carles Manrich i Peres I am sure that our presenters (Terry Wogan RIP especially) love the ESC. I have been a great fan for decades but still apreciate the (shall we say) less than deferential comments by our chaps. I do agree that the "gutting fish" remark may have been a little hurtful. It really is a British/Irish thing. Here in England many of us enjoy friendly insults between friends and this is our way of showing respect which may appear strange to others. Additionally by not taking it too seriously they may be opening it up to a wider audience and let's face it, over the last few years the ESC hasn't always taken itself too seriously either. i do appreciate and respect your comment but feel that Terry and Graham were/are perfecr for us excentric Brits.
Andy I'm English and I have to respectfully disagree. I watched the 2008 contest through the other week. I believe it was the last one Wogan did? Anyway, he was TOTALLY disrespectful. He even spoke OVER some of the performances. He trashed almost every act. I loved the man, but his attitude towards the contest is exactly why nobody in the UK takes it seriously anymore. Respectful artists and songwriters don't touch it with a barge pole because they think it's this ridiculous awful contest with no talent. The public don't think it's a serious contest. Yeah, it's fun, it's sometimes ridiculous, but the majority of the artists and songs are really good. Sweden keeps winning because the public in Sweden are really behind it. They send their best, because winning or doing well at Eurovision gives an artist a big boost in Sweden and around Europe. Artists in the UK think Eurovision is below them. It's a shame, and it's at least partly if not mostly Wogan's fault and the fault of the BBC. A little bit of ribbing banter is fine, as you said that's our humour... but he went way too far, almost every year.
