Very scary door opening. We had a few nasty accidents discharging at night where operators fell into holes and off bridges. The latest versions of these in Australia have remote controlled power operated doors. If there was good access the operator could drive alongside in a utility and control the discharge.
Took us years of killing ourselves opening ballast doors like this, or worse, before FINALLY someone invented the power dumping doors. Powered by the trains air system from the end of each car. No more pounding on doors with steel bars like these, or sledge hammers or sometimes a torch to heat a stuck or frozen door.
I like the Maintenance of Way videos of all the crews running equipment or things like dumping ballast. I get to watch instead of breaking my butt working lol

Manual dump ballast car operators - NO MASKS?!?! OSHA would love that!
