    LOL!!! What are these "ads" you keep talking about I haven't seen one in ages!
    In all seriousness, targeted ads ARE the primary reason I have ad block software installed at all times. Not because I don't want to support web sites I frequent, but because of their tendency to be manipulative.

    Do you think there should be a minimum age to own a smartphone? I read a cronicle recently, where someone suggested that there should be introduced laws governing that, since smartphones can be addictive, in the same way you have to be of legal age to smoke or drink.

      Honestly, I think so. It doesn't have to be that high, but there's some ongoing research about the impact of tech on the developing brain (like in kids under 5). For example, if they use a lego app instead of real lego blocks, they don't learn the spatial skills that can be applied in the real world.
      It would be a really tough one for parents because something like an ipad is really handy in occupying small kids in lots of situations. But analogue solutions are much better for brain development. I guess then we get into the territory of debating "owning" vs "using"

    • @rasmusbrekke9412
      @rasmusbrekke9412 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, it's a tricky one. The worrying thing is that younger and younger kids are given ipads and iphones, and the parents are just sitting there and not thinking through the consequences and wondering why the kids don't want to be social anymore. I think too many people are not aware how manipulative this can be...

      Agreed! My cousins kid has her own tablet and smartphone (only wifi) - she's only 2½ years old! She still plays with toys, but mostly she watches TH-cam. Even when she couldn't speak more than a few words in English she knew what icon to click on, and which videos to go watch.

    A lot of data suggests companies are tracking our mood through our online behaviour. A lot is said to be research, some is to deliver a more “personalised” advertising experience by matching content and ads to our emotional state. The more connected you are, the more data you provide for piecing together an accurate snapshot of your mood at any instance.
    How does that make you feel?

      BrainCraft thanks for making this series. If companies are going to be invasive, I wish they at least shared their analysis of our personal data with us, so that we might build better health/mental habits. When you have a mental illness, professionals often want us to track our moods in a journal over time. But the organ that's affected (our brains) is also the one that needs to help collect the data.

      I have mixed feelings, mostly negative. I left social media two years ago. After going through some withdrawal symptoms, I have become a better more independent person afterwards. I am no longer bombarded by the endless needs of everyone else. I feel liberated. I am mostly worried about my 3 year old nephew. I know my world is so much different than his. I am happier being an outsider, however he may not feel the same. Thank you for teaching us some background, I am looking forward to teaching him what you taught me. Your educational videos will teach at least one legacy. Thank you again.

      I hear you - it's really hard because I love technology yet I see the impacts that it is having on myself and society. And I don't think we talk about them enough? This year there has certainly been a shift in the press and reporting to hear more nuanced perspectives. After making this series and doing months of research I'm still falling into bouts of zombie scrolling and my overall screen time hasn't been reduced _that_ much. I find it really hard because all of my work is online. I'm thinking about really looking into habits for behaviour change (rather than just the theories behind things) and making a follow-up episode in a few months to see if I can really change my own behaviours.

    When you perform academic research, any study involving human beings has to pass through an etics comitee evaluation. Those platforms are using sensitive information all the time and maybe elicitating emotions without regulation. This is really worrying.

    • @braincraft

    When I was a little kid I used to go to the local bakery with my dad. The baker who owned the place would greet us and, without us asking, wrap up the bread we preferred for us to to take away (information he had on our habits). He would also, based on our tastes (I was raised vegetarian), suggest new items he thought we might like. This was (and still is) a pleasant experience.
    While we may not have been aware of it, information gathering is a process that has been ongoing throughout human history. And while data collection has undoubtedly been scaled up several thousand-fold, the fear that we have regarding the process can be amplified by individuals that have an innate, ingrained, or learned need for 'privacy'. Emotive language regarding the nature (nefarious or otherwise) of data collection can be in and of itself influential! So videos like this, while informative, may in fact fuel paranoia regarding the "what-if" scenarios that all technophobes and conspiracy-theorists are so fond of espousing.
    Rather than fear or worry about "your" data being collected, perhaps insist on the transparency that is necessary for information to be beneficial to society as a whole. There is little mention here of any positive side-effect of such data collection, sadly. Such as the fact that emotional tracking allows confidential identification of individuals that need help (anti-depression and suicide-prevention programs are currently using this technology).
    I love Braincraft videos to death... Honestly! I would just like to point out that the perspective here does come off with a spin that tilts towards the negative.

    One thing that I think that always needs to be kept in mind in regarding the attention wars is that a popular website that vies for your attention =/= social media. Specifically, people often treat TH-cam as if it is such. I think it is better conceptualized as a website with some elements in common with social media, but also with a practical purpose that even people who swear off social media can get behind. Like watching this video.

  • @VaskoGames
    @VaskoGames 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now I wonder if TH-cam is using a similar algorithm to recommend videos? Is this how the proverbial YT vortex works?
    On the note of ethicality, I feel as if this goes to the "User agreement" trade off where similar to how for government to work we all agree to give up certain rights; for internet site to be free we all agree to give up certain levels of privacy. I wish it were as simple as "I don't want this bit of privacy to be violated so I won't use ___ service or social media" however since most of these encroachments occur at an unobservable level, most just don't worry about it. Not sure how big of an issue this might become in the future :/

    • @braincraft
      @braincraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TH-cam uses a machine learning based recommendation algorithm to display what you see in the suggested column and after videos you watch. But there's no research/patents etc. to show they are doing anything with mood targeting. Yeah - I really wish "user agreements" were more accessible and we had more ownership over our platform experiences.

Although my usage of social media is limited to only following and staying up to date on things I deem interesting (I tried to update facebook every now and then a few years back... but that just made me feel uncomfortable so I deleted it. Maybe that's a good thing.), this series is really making me think about my usage of youtube and such: I usually have something going on in the background just to help me focus, but maybe I should switch to less manipulative platform for that...

    Emitional manipulative ads should be stopped before they become profitable, especially in the US. The computer scientists who worked on this should be the first ones to realise that this not only is a breach of the privacy of millions of users but also unethical. Also experimenting on more than 600 000 users without them knowing and by manipulating them emotionally goes way beyond the most infamous psychological experiments (that were regarded as borderline legal) and should be brought to light a punishable by law

    Stuff like this is why I specifically don't consume media about depressing news, and why I'm subscribed to channels about science, discoveries, and innovation. The things to really live for are human progress and how to make the world a better place. I'm well aware of things like murderers, politician corruption, and corporate greed. I'm not pretending they don't exist, but I don't need to be reminded on a regular basis about them, especially if there's nothing I personally can do to change them. I can, however, take my part in improving my own community.

    I released a video on this exact issue 2 days ago, which makes it all the more annoying that your video is soo much better... ;)
    Not to be a technophobe or anything, but it's clear that app developers are listening to people such as Nir Eyal, the guy who wrote the book on how to make products as addictive as possible.
    They're using the same neural pathways that makes slot machines the most addictive form of gambling to get us hooked on their platforms, and then they're free to use every single post or photo to create their very own psychological profile of you.
    Back in the day TV ratings had to be painstakingly collected through a voluntary process in select households - how did we go from that to this?
    Because no one bothers to read the Terms of Service and we really like our funny cat videos.

    A decision I recently made and will try it for 2019 is :
    Buying a "dumb" old Nokia phone and use it ( because I need to use phone all the time ) and schedule my smart phone using for 1 hr per day ..
    I mean everything on phone can be replaced by something else, much efficient sometimes ( like camera for example) ..
    The era of beginning of cell phone apperance was the best and most comfortable one, when phones were just for calling and little few functions .. plus they were much cheaper !
    Now some phones cost 1000$ and people buy it anyway it's just insane !
    I love technology but smart phones are making us stupid and consume our time that we have no time to enjoy the real impact of technological advances that are ment to make our life better !

    There are 2 things I was wandering about:
    1: If tech companies really can analyze our emotional state through our behaviour on social media wouldn't that make for a great application? Like for example to track your own mood in certain situations or for a therapist to monitor the effects of a treatment.
    2: How would you go about controlling this kind of technology? It seems unlikely that it can be banned completely, but you also can't just tell the AI to not make people sad anymore since most AIs (that I know of) are so complex that you can't just go in and rewire some neurons to fix a problem you're having.

    Speaking of emotions, why do people get so fired up about compliments? For example, when some people compliment my wife's figure she is flattered but others making a similar comment makes her uncomfortable. I've noticed this is true with almost everyone and most certainly not limited to compliments on one's appearance. I find the behavior interesting. Being an old fat guy, most are uncomfortable when I compliment while this was not the case before the weight gain. But if I ask permission to offer a compliment, the compliment is 100% received well. And witnesses seem to get even more offended that the target of a compliment. Our brains must be broken.

    It seems like your alluding to the other side of the coin , that this has the potential to detect people in danger of (on a sliding scale of), potential for harm, either them self or others and isolation, whether online or IRL. If possible is there a duty of care (if nothing else) to inform the person (or group) to seek help. And just a side note would 'beyond blue' be "Advertised" to these people as a soft form of self regulation?

    S. Think the other way around. Would it be ok if they would be making you happy if they would know you would be spending more because of it (you have less filters, logical barriers towards new information while you are happy)? Probably not. If you are more happy you are probably more exhausted because happiness is more energy intense than depression (which would sooner or later follow if you would be happy for too long time without a rest, which would be problematic if it would be social-network induced) :) . And anyway, why is it ok to show you adds? They are designed to manipulate you. Their old name before modern marketing came around was economic propaganda. Because it is trying to insert into you a biased idea about a product, a company or a brand. So ... is it is ok to advertise? Because companies fear not. If you dont, competing products will win over yours, not because they are better, but because they have a higher marketing budget.

    This might not be the correct channel or series to ask this question, but is profile synchronisation a thing? My girlfriend has started to get recommendations from channels I subscribe to, even though they make no sense whatsoever based on what kind of content she watches. There is no logical explanation why she would suddenly get a technology video suggested when she doesn't even watch anything related to that stuff - exept I happen to frequently watch said channel and am subscriber.
    Does her phone listen mine? Did Google figure out we are in a relationship based on locations? As far as I know, neither of us have disclosed this information, name of eachothers explicitly through googles services.
    Im using the google Now launcher, so that might affect things.
    I also tried asking google assistant, but she claimed she didn't understand what I was talking about.

    Well I keep ublock + Nano Defender(anti adblock blocker :p ) and Iridium on youtube to show ads on subscribed channels :)
    Plus there are other things like adbypasser,popup blocker and what not. I mostly browse minimalist sites like reddit so when people ask hey have you seen that ads where they "NO"
    P.S for phone I use fdroid (FOSS) which contain alternative to almost all apps I need for daily usage + their's blokada

    Vanessa, even if the companies wanna make us happy(through its recommendations), I think that's still screwed up. I think people should think of making something more out of their life than just being happy. we all know motivational videos motivate for the next few minutes and then you are back to normal. Maybe the question businesses have to ask (in case they are concerned at all) is : How can I get each individual to find his long term goals and help her being persistent on the road to achieving them. What do you think?

    What's amazing to me is that anyone would think this WASN'T the case. Of course companies are going to use whatever means they have at their disposal to sell you shit. That's what capitalism does. Ethics is only a concern when it threatens profits.

      LOL very perceptive of you. I started publishing this series on Fridays because of Thanksgiving and then I was never organised enough to make it back to Thursday 😅
