Great review. I happen to drive my own in aurora blue for almost a month now. From my point of view, it’s a great car on many levels. The acceleration is fun - especially at a traffic light. The range is sufficient for the typical daily use. The front seats are very comfortable - even on longer travels. The back seats are spacious enough for a short trip with the family and the trunk is okay for a long weekend as a couple. Currently the (most) perfect hatchback EV, imho.
Hi Hans. I'm thinking of ordering one of these. Sounds like they are reasonable fun and look great. What would you say are the negatives of the Born are? And can you fit a roof rack to it?
@@gwill478 I‘m not aware that a roof rack is available (possibly aftermarket; but have never looked into it). Negatives of the Born? I‘d say: the lane assist should be easier to deactivate (as it has a tendency to malfunction), the paint (blue) is rather sensitive to bitd droppings, the software needs update (waiting for 3.0) especially since the Cupra app has currently very few functions. But it‘s fun to drive, looks great, great seats, enough luggage space… I would buy it again.
I'm thinking about getting a Born V1, from your experience did you ever feel like the car needed the upgraded suspension optional extra or did it feel okay, especially over bumps and pot holes?
@@taylorthrall7321 Depends on what you expect. The Born is rather stiff over bumps and potholes. I‘d say stiffer than the Audi A1 I also drive. So, if you look for comfort, you might want to consider that upgrade (which I have not tested/experienced).
Great review; thank you. We've got the 58KWh V1 on order after a couple of really enjoyable test drives. Really excited to enter the world of EV motoring soon.
Right language, pitch, pauses, you do a very good job in this review. The car seems to be all you say, hope you get 1 week loan to do the next level video, 700-1000 kilometers and feedback. I am thinking about getting one, either my Toyota hybrid leasing runes out or sooner. Lots of interesting things in this car apart from looks, the coils and suspension stands... Well done Cupra.

@@PetrolPed I collected it Saturday, a week early! V2 with Tech pack. Took a bit of time getting used to controls as they aren't buttons. Awesome car for the money.
This the one I have been waiting for. We've had Minis for almost 20 years but as they won't produce a Clubman Cooper SE, I'll go back to Cupra - I had a Leon Cupra Turbo back in 2003 and loved it.
Very nice Pete. I love the set up and the styling is on point. I agree with the bigger battery pack, where I live in country NSW Australia 🇦🇺 there’s not much in terms of infrastructure to service an EV. In my future, when I move closer to the coast; I can see a EV sport hatchback in my life, I reckon Cupra is on the top of the list. Cheers Matt from Australia 🇦🇺
Historically an Audi family I test drove the Q4 with a view to changing my Q3 and was singularly underwhelmed on many levels. We have had a Q7 hybrid and currently an e-tron both of which were/are superb but I appreciate a price point beyond the Q4. So as part of my research following some reviews, I test drove the V3 and found it a great drive. I thought the augmented screen display would be irritating but wasn't - not sure If that would be the case in the dark. In short I have ordered and am awaiting my new Cupra Born V3 77kWh battery version in the aurora blue (glad this has had a positive reception!) and on the advice of the family have the e-boost and added the heat pump. I feel I could go to most of the places I will need to without worry. In fact if I was driving over 200 miles I would be stopping for a break anyway. We drove to Cornwall in the e-tron which has a 240 mile range and just planned appropriate coffee and lunch stop to recharge so the longer range of the Cupra will be a bonus. Many years ago I had. a VW Golf and the Cupra puts me in mind of that - great for around town driving but comfortable enough for a motorway run. As always there are compromises and in the Cupra its probably the controls on the screen which several reviews say takes some getting used to. Can't wait to get and start driving it!
I’m currently in an ID.3 and an one of the 2,500 Born’s they have sold. I’ll sell my ID.3 to switch to the Born as love the looks way better than the VW plus the interior is better finished. Looking forward to it arriving.
Looks very nice in the dark blue, too bad we in North America will not see this car. To me this should have been the ID4. As always thank you Pete for sharing.
Even though the infotainment is unsafe we are looking at the 77kw variant because on balance the features seem better than other EVs and the DCC is a worthwhile option. EDIT: my wife drove the Born and felt she could cope with the daft infotainment system, so we have ordered the 77kw version with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.
I wasn't sure about the Cupra on the initial drives. But this one filmed in blue with the 20" wheels looks stunning. Glad you enjoyed the location... That's my stomping grounds!!

Another great review. Like the look of the Born, certainly better looking than the ID3. If I had a need for a car that size I'd be very tempted by the more powerful motor and battery combo.
Unfortunately ID3 is flawed combination of Valeo electric engine and LG batteries. To this day still best EV powertrain from VAG group is that VK 45.01 (P) Porsche tank from WW2
I love what cupra are trying to do to differentiate from other vag brands, I have the formentor vz2 310 and its like having a golf r but with more luxurious interior imo, im excited to see more and more stand alone cupra coming out, I believe they have the right to say they have separated from seat.

Looks like a really good new addition to the EV market. I absolutely love my Mach-e, been a total game changer! I think this could really challenge the VW ID3 corner of the market. Great review!!

Great review! I've had mine now for about 3months and I could not be happier!! So many different rewivers hate the buttons on the wheel but you need to have the car for more then a day to get used to the buttons, and I love them! I choose this car instead of the Polestar actually 🙌
As a spanish I think Cupra is doing well offering a shocking styling (looks a totally different car to the id.3 and the setup is different) in this early stage. But sooner or later will need a step backwards in overstyling the car. The bronze and some lines won't age well in 10 years from now and a more subtle agresiveness in the design will attract grown a$$ men. I miss the old days when the RS4 B7 didn't need to shout it was a performance car and it really was. Don't get me wrong...I like it a lot (now) but I'm not sure if I love it over the years.
I do like that colour combo! Still getting used to the look of these EV wheels. Would be interested to learn how much aero and efficiency they give when compared to a normal alloy wheel.
Getting mine in just over a week, sooooo looking forward to having it. Styling is very nice, drives well and handles well. Only wish i could have had a copper accent alloys which I can't on my trim. Think it will meet my needs of travelling to Bristol and back several times a week for work
Honestly thinking about getting one of these. I'm a driving instructor, and do approx 35k per year, which costs £600-700 per month on fuel (in an ecoboost fiesta.) For me, its probably the best looking EV after the Honda E, but without the awful range. Need to test drive one soon I think!
Very handsome car from all angles and amazed how spacious it was. Fastned are also creating similar fast multi-charger stations but without the added facilities. Until there are more of these on trunk roads, EV drivers cannot rely on the handful of chargers available either working at all or being occupied for up to an hour by the person who just beat you to the last one available!
@@nealm1814 Yes, I am. Have a look at the north half of Scotland's woefully poor network of fast chargers and try to imagine taking a holiday there in an EV with a modest battery size. The A9, in particular, has a very limited number of fast chargers and is nowhere near able to accommodate the growing army of tourists driving an EV, of which I am one.
@@briangriffiths114 Oh so your problem seems to be with just one part of the country and specifically one road. I just looked at the ChargePlace Scotland map and the longest stretch of the A9 without a working rapid charger is 45 miles. Even an old Nissan Leaf could manage that. Longest stretch of chargerless highway I could find on casual inspection is the 70 miles between Inverness and Gariloch not exactly a range anxiety inducing distance.
@@nealm1814 The long climb to Drumochter Pass will reduce range significantly on most EVs and if you arrive at, say, Kingussie with a low battery and find no chargers are available then the same at Aviemore, you would be struggling. Furthermore, the network has a lot of charger breakdowns as referred to at 6.40 on this video by an EV motoring channel: th-cam.com/video/JxF7AFI_jZs/w-d-xo.html I wish it were not the case but the same problem is repeated in many rural areas around the UK which need significant investment to cope with seasonal EV traffic which is on the rise.
@@nealm1814 If all those ChargeplaceScotland chargers could be relied upon to work things would be different! The network was ahead of its time but they are now long in the tooth and quite flaky in many instances. I would have no problem driving up the A9 in my Tesla but I know my mate with a Kia had a challenging time further north.
The last car I bought cost me 5k and zero road tax with super low insurance, takes 5 adults does over the speed limit and will get me from the south of the UK to the borders of Scotland on 1 tank of fuel. Electric cars are just way to pricey to even contemplate changing...never mind I live in a city where parking and charging points are few and far between (and have recently shot up in price)
Great Review, accepting qualified as short test. Surprisingly no criticism of ID3 infotainment / screen frustrations ? Will be interesting when you have one for a week. ✊
Born were the car which carried me to electric vehicles. I had Fiesta st with mountune package but shortly after buyng that i had to swap for diesel Audi. Even though i like my audi the expenses in finland were too much and i wanted to swap for more newer, less expensive to drive which still has some punch so lo and behold, Cupra Born e-boost 58kw is on its way. Took the quasar gray with beats speakers and dinamica seats among few other accessories. In uk i believe its bit like v2 package but in finland we can customize bit more.
Great comment on knowing if you can live with an EV you need the car for longer than a 'test drive' but that's all dealers really offer in the most part, some offer a couple of hours. So how do you really know if you should buy one given how most dealers only want you in the car for 20 mins.
I have the same AR HUD on the enyaq and I've really enjoyed the last year using it. The born is basically the same as the id3 but with a better looking shell on it.
The car does look good in this colour and trim. I can imagine that I would want the bigger battery version but I am not convinced about the 20” wheels. Personally I think 18” or 19” with a larger sidewall height would be better at dealing with the bad road surfaces and potholes I get on my local rural roads as they would possibly destroy the wheels on this test car, but these things are all individual personal choices. I guess you can specify the wheels you want? Looking forward to seeing more reviews of new EVs about to come out especially the Subaru Solterra so I am hoping that you will be reviewing that soon?
That place is great, I'm 42 and don't think I'll be around to see places like that when they become the norm. We have such a long way to go, i now think the car technology is coming on faster than the infrastructure. Really do think demand for charging is going to way to much for what is provided
Really love the looks of this, both interior and exterior. Currently driving a Mini JCW, but I would say this is the first EV that I really like the looks of that would tempt me, but my inner caveman still wants to hear the noise of dinosaur power!
Now we are getting into some sensible EV’s that will fit into most people’s everyday requirement. Great review Ped, you BBC seemed to have a great time driving the Cupra👍😎
Excellent overview, really enjoyed the balanced viewpoint. I’m tossing up between the Formentor and the Born - living in the Canaries where prices are very tempting on Cupra - not sure if I’m brave enough for EV yet! We shall see….or vamos a ver around here!
Great review! I have to admit that I'd not considered this as I did not like the ID3 but I can't help but think this is what the ID3 should have been. Does make me chuckle that Cupra with this, and Skoda with the Enyaq, are kind of doing a better job than VW with the ID3 and ID4. Nicer looking car all around, may have to go and take a look at the dealer at the weekend
Fantastic review as always Sir Pete. I like that’s it’s a rwd set up. The ev that really gets me excited is the new Ford F-150 lighting pickup truck. There’s a really good chance my family will get one of those
I love the looks and color of the car, the interior looks good too. Too bad we'll never these in the US anytime soon. I like the size and the power seems more than adequate as well. Enjoy! I'm jealous 😫
I’ve been very interested to see this car launch. I have to confess that the Cupra Born in my opinion is one of the most aesthetically pleasing and dynamic EV’s on the market. It’s price point and performance add to its looks and it is beyond doubt that it will be a success. My only disappointments are the fact that it is rear wheel drive which concerns me how the car will handle in poor weather, and the cockpit. I would have liked to have seen Cupra retain the conventional and flowing cockpit styling of ICE cars be it with a modern digital twist, instead of what looks like awkward square housings of cars from the 1970’s. I just dislike the transition by many EV manufacturers of attempting to design futuristic EV cockpit styling to touchscreen and chunky drive selectors on steering columns. Interestingly you didn’t mention the quality of the interior plastics although I accept you only had a short time with the car. Thank you for your brief but informative review.
Don't worry about rear wheel drive in an EV ... it's actually the ideal setup. The reason we benefit from FWD in a car with an engine is that there is plenty weight at the front for traction. Having an engine at the front and rear wheel drive tends to leave the back with too little traction so we have all learned about the consequent handling issues. An EV has the opportunity for ideal weight distribution with plenty of weight on the rear wheels. I have RWD only Tesla SR+ and it is superb in slippery conditions.
An EV is totally different to your current ICE, they have 50/50 weight distribution due to the battery situated between the front and rear wheels, so rear wheel drive is fine.
Greetings from Gran canaria (canary islands), I have already ordered mine, in quasar grey, looking forward to its arrival, I ordered it with the eboost package.
Not bad, things moving in right direction. I mean it costs 8 times the price of my 11 year old Golf Gti, looks like a riot to drive, but the COST. Even with the super high cost of petrol, I'd never recoup and electric has gone up MORE than petrol has and projected to keep rising. Just can't justify it. Needs to be sub 30k or grants to get it there.
Subjective of course but apart from the front end. And one or two nice trim pieces, I couldn’t see hardly ANY styling. The rear end makes the Jaguar SE back end look good. Modern interiors, especially in EV’s are often really cool looking. But how GREY can you get? Goodness that’s a dull place. Clarkson once said “ee-ors mopey place” Great video though.
This was a fantastic. watch Ped,ive got connections with Essex and Braintree, what was very striking and had me thinking was how selfish sport can be,I done the weeding there and I'm absolutely slaughtered, what if I had used a machine with battery power harboured from say...dry canoeing or virtual jogging or cycling. We are a posing race trying to look good for everyone else, spose this goes for owning nice cars too, status....
Great review, saw the early concept cars and they look even better in the metal. I'm with you on purchasing the 240 V3 version. Really nice looking capable car.
Seems to have all the bases covered Pedro. It also looks the part & has VAG group behind it. Bold move to separate from the mainstream brand, couldn't see RS, AMG or M Division doing that. The hot EV hatch you showed us looks mega!
The non physical buttons on steering wheel and no analogue controls for ventilation is a deal breaker for my wife. I think the touch screen only and capacitative buttons is not safe.
I had a Formentor. They are almost unusable on the road. The touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel make the whole interface even worse. I tried using voice control and Android Auto but neither worked well. Design over functionality.
Always nice to see a testvideo of you. BUT.......your youtube-name??? Petrol-Ped wil be Battery-Ped of Charge-Ped??? Just teasing. Like your videos...one of the best and honest channels
Given the sheer power and torque of this EV platform, I always tell new owners that when considering the drive modes, 'B' is 'Best', and 'D' could be 'Dangerous'. 💚
Great looking car. Finally an EV that has emotion, that is not mega expensive.

Used to live in Brainttree, know it well as family still there and go back often. Would have to be called Jason surely!!
Car looks stunning and will need to visit the grid serve when I get my ev car. Hopefully in July and when I go to silverstone racetrack.
I do like that colour combo! Still getting used to the look of these EV wheels. Would be interested to learn how much aero and efficiency they give when compared to a normal alloy wheel.
Phone Charge 3 cable std according to V1 package
Great looking car 👍🏻🙏🏻
Fantastic review
Getting mine in just over a week, sooooo looking forward to having it. Styling is very nice, drives well and handles well. Only wish i could have had a copper accent alloys which I can't on my trim. Think it will meet my needs of travelling to Bristol and back several times a week for work
Nice 👌
Honestly thinking about getting one of these. I'm a driving instructor, and do approx 35k per year, which costs £600-700 per month on fuel (in an ecoboost fiesta.) For me, its probably the best looking EV after the Honda E, but without the awful range. Need to test drive one soon I think!
You sure do
Very popular as driving instructor cars here in Switzerland. Would recommend not going for the biggest wheel option though.
A "handful" of chargers. Are you serious? There are 5750 rapid chargers in the UK.
Furthermore, the network has a lot of charger breakdowns as referred to at 6.40 on this video by an EV motoring channel: th-cam.com/video/JxF7AFI_jZs/w-d-xo.html
I wish it were not the case but the same problem is repeated in many rural areas around the UK which need significant investment to cope with seasonal EV traffic which is on the rise.
I love it too fella! Tempted myself by a top spec model with the higher power too but I’ve got to have a good hard think.
Great vid buddy 🙌👌✅😎
Great video mate 👌
Great Review, accepting qualified as short test. Surprisingly no criticism of ID3 infotainment / screen frustrations ? Will be interesting when you have one for a week. ✊
Tune into tonight’s video 👍
Born were the car which carried me to electric vehicles. I had Fiesta st with mountune package but shortly after buyng that i had to swap for diesel Audi. Even though i like my audi the expenses in finland were too much and i wanted to swap for more newer, less expensive to drive which still has some punch so lo and behold, Cupra Born e-boost 58kw is on its way. Took the quasar gray with beats speakers and dinamica seats among few other accessories. In uk i believe its bit like v2 package but in finland we can customize bit more.
As you said mate you need to live with it to see how good and bad it is and is it worth you hard earned pennies thanks for sharing 👏😎
Great looking!ev to consider
Great comment on knowing if you can live with an EV you need the car for longer than a 'test drive' but that's all dealers really offer in the most part, some offer a couple of hours. So how do you really know if you should buy one given how most dealers only want you in the car for 20 mins.
I have the same AR HUD on the enyaq and I've really enjoyed the last year using it. The born is basically the same as the id3 but with a better looking shell on it.
Yep 👍
@@PetrolPed I have a colleague who has one on order so looking forward to seeing it
At last, a more “affordable” decent looking EV. Soooo much easier on the eye than a model 3. I think this will be an instant success. Great video!

Excellent review Pete but I can’t wait for some Cayman content..
Second that
The car does look good in this colour and trim.
The 20s roll really well 👌
That place is great, I'm 42 and don't think I'll be around to see places like that when they become the norm. We have such a long way to go, i now think the car technology is coming on faster than the infrastructure. Really do think demand for charging is going to way to much for what is provided
Here where I live in Manchester they’ve just opened a fully electric charging station just down the road from me……looks impressive.
this is a realy Beautyful car i love it ! :D
I do like the look of these. You can get the alloys with the copper accents also which look great. Not sure how much they would be to repair though..
Really love the looks of this, both interior and exterior. Currently driving a Mini JCW, but I would say this is the first EV that I really like the looks of that would tempt me, but my inner caveman still wants to hear the noise of dinosaur power!
Play noises out the radio, or make the noises yourself. You will look a bit mental though....
Not so much _"Dinosaur Power."_ More like _"Plankton Power!"_ ;-))...
Considering you drive a JCW, have you looked into the Cooper SE? Range isn't for everyone but it feels more of a hot hatch than the Born does
I’ve just sold my JCW and ordered the born V3 77 car. Highly recommended after my drive and this review too.
We shall see….or vamos a ver around here!
sisisi
Just down the road from me .. if I’d know I would have popped in to see you.
There’s a really good chance my family will get one of those
Very smart looker, can't see anything not to like over this short test tbh. Alex.
Clarkson once said “ee-ors mopey place”
Great video though.
The best bit of the ID3 is the matrix headlights. Would be a shame if they aren’t available on this.
Thanks mate 👍
Given the sheer power and torque of this EV platform, I always tell new owners that when considering the drive modes, 'B' is 'Best', and 'D' could be 'Dangerous'.
💚
I love the B mode simply because I rarely if ever use the brake pedal.
