Excellent review! As someone (from the UK) who has just taken possession of a new Cupra Leon e-Hybrid, and has had two Golf GTEs in the past, I can confirm everything TB says is accurate and true. It’s a great car, if admittedly initially expensive. Though running costs are then very low, if you can charge cheaply (e.g. at home). Well done Tom! Another excellent review 👍🏻
Currently deciding between the Cupra e-Hybrid and the GTE, would you say you proffered one over the other for any reasons? I like the sportier look of the Cupra :D
Great review! I'm shortly taking delivery of mine next week but in the UK we have the Leon Cupra PHEV VZ2 or VZ3 whereas you have the VZE. Looking at the VZE spec it's the very much the same as the VZ2 but with the optional sunroof. Oddly enough the VZ2 / VZE wheels are so much nicer than the more expensive VZ3 wheels.
Another comprehensive report Tom but I'm not totally convinced by the plug-in technology, although it would appear to be a far better proposition than the Toyota system. Some overseas reports have not been so favourable though and criticised the marriage of the two motors in normal driving. This car is some $20K more than a Leon V with 140kw and that buys a lot of petrol. For those who have to recharge daily at night on peak electricity rates with no solar input; pay the 2c per km state charge; no Government rebate because of the initial price, it is hard to see any real benefits plus the car is heavier and has reduced boot space and additional complexity.
The world has gone quite mad in the last two years! Why are we "chasing cars" that are full of gadgets we dont need, being brain washed by "electricity is the answer" and paying utterly ridiculous prices in Australia. It cannot realistically continue. Sack the greed driven marketing departments and get back to reality.
Might have to sell my “bumpy riding Tesla model 3 LR” and get this. The constant harsh ride does get tiresome after a while. Electric range, with Golf handling, plus variable dampers. Perfect!! I loved my Golf I had before buying my the Tesla but couldn’t stand paying for fuel or servicing….and the dry clutch DSG started making slipping noises. The Tesla is amazing, it’s just not as “chuckable” as the golf. Plugging in every night is no big deal either. Time to test drive the Cupra!!!
I’d buy the wagon variant in a heartbeat, but Cupra said they wouldn’t bring it to Australia…too busy focusing on the SUVs I won’t buy. Surely this is stupid thinking as so many will opt for other SUVs, but wagon lovers are desperate for a good thing like this. Can only hope they re-think and see there is a market for good wagons here, it would be nice to see either Cupra or Skoda bring a Plug In Hybrid wagon to Australia.
Isn't a Golf R about this price in OZ or at least the 228kw AWD Formentor too? So why would anybody consider this instead at 65k even over the VZx version?
A Mk8 Golf R is over $80k on the road in Australia. I have had two Golf GTI’s and currently drive a Mk 7:5 Golf R. There is no way that I would consider replacing my current R with a Mk8 R. This Cupra looks interesting and will definitely consider when replacing my existing car.
@@rongambol9910 that's weird cause Formentor is $72k here in NZ, T Roc R was $68k, on release Golf R was $76k and Tiguen R is $80k. Surprised in Oz pricing is so high. Completely agree on 7.5vs 8. I had 7.5 for 40000kms and it was awesome. Only benefit I can see on 8 is the matrix lights. I have them on my Kodiaq and if you live rurally they are really good. Drove 3 hours at night last weekend on 100kph roads and didn't touch the high beam stalk the whole time, it gets it right.
Ignore ‘official’ PHEV fuel economy claims, but the data I have presented here is accurate and the result of meticulous testing. Not sure who managed 10L+/100km in this car but I didn’t find that to be the case. Even with a dead battery, I was able to do better than 7L/100km.
It's extremely easy to comment a new car! But try commenting on the same car 5 years down the track and then do some real informative sessions about reliability/ maintainance cost. Almost every reviewer are scared! Good thing that we have other sources to get info about unbiased reviews.
I think you're confused. This review isn't biased (in fact, we're one of the least biased sources of new car reviews, because we're independently owned by Budget Direct and don't accept advertising from carmakers). But it is indeed a new car review, not a used car review - they're just different things. As for MQB PHEVs, I'm not equipped to make predictions about five-year reliability because they didn't exist five years ago!
...I'd like it better if it shed say an extra...125kgs ...and that it looked a lot better ...and it had a manual gearbox Chasing Cars / Tom you've now plugged at least 2 cars with dubious reliability and service records, Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce and Cupra Leon VZe.....yes only time will tell if these 2 cars were lemons or not.
Another great review Tom. Chasing Cars is definitely my favourite car channel these days.
I’ve had mine for just over 1 week and it’s awesome. I’m really impressed with it
Great to hear!
How's it going after a few months?
@@Dan4096 awesome, great car
@@morgantaylor9587 great, good to hear, tossing up between this, the Born and the Model 3 that has just recently been discounted again... 🤔

the one i was waiting for! great review

Best review on the Cupra I've watched.... and I've watched a few! Good work Tom!
"I never thought I'd SEAT, but..." - nicely done, Sir.
Brilliant review Tom, extremely clear and concise explanation of the engine/motor/transmission interaction.Well done!
For that money I would like ALL the bells and whistles please Mr or Mrs Cupra.

$65000 and have to pay $2000 extra for full leather and electric seat?
Not everyone likes full leather seats. Plus if you're the only driver electrically adjustable seats are a complete waste of money
@@danielkennett9313 for this money should have electrically adjustable front seats and no more waste of money 😇

Any early thoughts Tom comparing this with 308 GT hybrid 225?
How does it compare to the Formentor VZe?
55 Kms is really good.
Will you review the VZ (245bhp) model?
Hi 👋 Tom,
Brilliant as usual.
Request you to review 🇮🇳 Indian SUV’s.
TATA, Mahindra and the likes.
I am sure it’s worth.
Thanks
Fuel consumption? The claim is a lie - another reviewer measured north of 10l/100km

Who's buying these at $65k plus the goverment and dealer charges?
Pretty sure it's 65k on the road, including 3 years servicing. So really high 50s before on roads
What a mix bag! DSG, turbo and throw in a rechargeable battery. A $65k future headache if you ask me!
Man.
Our 2022 Akera was way cheaper
So you can have your hybrid cake and eat it too?
$65 000!!!
Where was this car when I laid down too much for my Mk8 GTI?
And Tom it’s pronounced “Coopra”
