Another really informative video mate. I'm the same as you, I can't do low graphics settings. Kills the experience for me. For reference for those watching, my monitors are DP so I'm able to run Triple 4K at 144Hz with Gsync no problem, but as you said, it's rare I actually hit that frame rate. iRacing does it at native 4K on some tracks, but others are around 70-100FPS with max settings on my 3090. The only game I've had to scale the resolution down is ACC so far and like you said, it still looks very good at 1440P on the big screens.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Exactly Will, whats the point in having really nice screens and turning all the gloss off?! :)
I've only tried ACC, DR2 (which doesn't support triples anyway) and PC2 but I'm more than happy at 1440p, these adapters will do 4k @ 60hz so for those that prefer resolution over FPS you could always do that :)

I can run 4k in Iracing, but can only get 60 FPS max. I am running 1440p with my graphics setting set to max, and I am running at a full 120 FPS. Not bad for a 2080 TI. Your video is of great help Karl, I'm in the head scratching learning stage of putting my rig together, I have a gaming laptop with a 3070 in that's running my media center 65" first gen LG OLED TV and have a dedicated PC with an RTX 3080ti running my sim rig, with that all being said, my GPU is different than yours in that I have 2- 2.1 HDMI and 3- 1.4 displayports, I am putting together the Trak Racer T120 with 3 LG 42" OLED C2's and was wondering how I was going to connect my 3080 to the two remaining monitors, Currently I have one HDMI port feeding the center monitor and the second HDMI feeding a dated 5.1 Onkyo AVR that I wasn't using so I decided to use it for my surround system on the sim rig, unfortunately my AVR will not pass through 120HZ it only will do 60HZ in which would have given me that free extra HDMI but I still have 3 of the displayports available in which brought me to your video as I wasn't clear as to how to hook up the two remaining OLED's. So the way it's setup, I am using the AVR for the audio only there is no HDMI out to monitor, my PC sees it as another monitor through the second HDMI only it's a virtual monitor that only supports 1080P so it will act like a 4th monitor in that sense.
Edit in; if by chance the displayport carry audio along with video would they carry surround sound? If so I could just swap out a displayport run it to the AVR and that would leave me with two 2.1 HDMI but I would still need the adapters, one for the third monitor and the other to convert the AVR.

I notice on the HDMI screen I get constant blackouts. I’m thinking this is due to bandwidth like you mentioned. Would it be best to get a better HDMI and the DP adapter, or just the HDMI? @@KarlGosling Ok noted Karl, sorry I missed this part. The reason of my question is that I have an Aorus Master 3090 with 3 X HMDIs + 3 X DP but I want also to put on a 4th monitor above my head for the stats plus a HP G2 and i do not know how to connect them all together and do not have to disconnect / connect plugs when changing from triples to VR. I connect them all on the DP, Nvidia Surround plays beautifully. However, I need one more DP connection for the VR headset since I only have 3 x which are all already occupied from the 3 x 144hz monitors I have. Then i thought to connect the triples all thru HDMIs. I bought 8K HDMI fast quality cables and connected all. It seems them all as separate monitors but when trying to do it one flat screen with Nvidia Surround it crashes. Then i checked the Resolutions of each monitor in the NV Control Panel and it shows that the one monitor can do thru HDMI only 75hz and not 144hz (all monitors are the identical AOC 144hz 32"). Thus i do not know if I get the Startech Adapters whether I would be able to run the system in Surround mode..? Are you running yours in Surround mode with these adapters...? Thanks a lot Karl!

Afaik GamerMuscle is still using triple 4k-resolution and even bought a 3080ti with three HDMI-ports to avoid converters. I've turned off AA to run 4k at medium-high settings when using a GTX 1060 and for me this was definitely more pleasant than using a lower resolution, which just looks blurry to me and absolute no-go. But I also prefer sharpness over eye-candies and for me WRC10 has better looking graphics than DR2 because the image is sharper. I also like rF2-graphics because it's sharp as a razors-edge. With VR I almost always turned off dynamic shadows to keep framerates without loosing sharpness.

    I run a 3070, with a hdmi2.1 to a Sony KD-43X85J central screen which I got for 550€, I think it's the cheapest there is to get 120hz TV
And I must say it's great, much better contrast and colors at gaming graphics than my 60hz Samsung side monitors,
though at 120hz it halves horizontal lines, which makes the fonts on the desktop look a bit blocky at 1080p
    The 3070 can't really handle 1440p on 3 monitors at 120 frs, that's why I stay with 1080p.
Anyway, 260 more horizontal lines don't make a real difference on 43" screen,
which I use because it's height about 55cm corresponds to a cars window height including the dashboard.
I don't want a larger TV, because its awfull, these oversized mirrors on the sides...
The difference between 60hz and 120hz is not really big, on straights when the vertical objects fly by on both sides.
But the difference becomes very obvious, on short circuits with a lot of turning.
The vertical objects, trees, posts, buildings are moving in a very jerky way from left to right, right to left, causing motion sickness.
This is very obvious in Karting.
With Dirt Rally 2.0, 60hz may contribute to motion sickness, when there is more sharp 3-6 turning.
Unluckily, nvidia surround treats the three monitors as one big screen, and uses the highest common refresh rate, which in my case is 60hz on all of them.
So all the games that use nvidia surround will not have 120hz at the center.
As far as I could see, Project Cars 2 is the only game to go without nvidia surround and take control of each monitors capacities,
It's the game I play most anyway, it has great Karting and closed Rally Circuits.
And they are much better with 120hz, except for an occasional stuttering for 2-3 seconds sometimes.
I get 120hz and more, when I only turn down reflection effects, and honestly, who looks at those.
Meanwhile I wait as everybody else for prices to drop, and 120hz becoming standard for all TV's to replace my side TV's
when they may exasperate me by pulling down the 120hz of my central monitor.
And as far as I've read, Nvidia surround sometimes reverts to 60hz with three 144hz monitors.
    It's an intolerable pain...
I now have to find an alternative to nvidia surround, because either you keep it on all the time with all to 60hz,
or it completely screws up all of the settings I had before going to surround mode.

Great info. Your judgement call here is sound! Why? Because the TVs’ native resolution is 4k. Thus, the TVs are upscaling to 4k anyway and you are seeing a 4k image. So you are splitting the job of resolution processing between the computer and the TVs. With a good amount of tv content not being 4k, TV manufacturers have implemented amazingly good resolution-upscaling technology to ensure content always looks good on their 4k TVs, regardless of the content’s original resolution. Thus I bet it is indistinguishable (to a human being) when you are playing - unless you put your nose to the screen 😀. As you said, HDR, higher fps, and the realism are way more important.

I have a 65" 4K TV, sit about 130cm away the screen when I play sim racers, and 1440p is noticeably more pixelated and at times blurry to my eyes. It's just not nearly as crisp as running the game at native 4k. I actually prefer higher resolution of 4k at med-high graphics settings vs 1440p and high-ultra settings. But my TV is only 60hz, so I don't get any benefit of running 1440p with 80+ FPS.

    • @netlawman2001
      @netlawman2001 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jasper_of_puppets interesting. Slightly less sharp I get as with upscaling you are probably getting 2.5 or 3 k as opposed to native 4k. It can’t be more pixelated though as lcd panels can’t change their resolution. A 4k monitor is a 4 k monitor regardless of the content fed. Also, you have 65” which is quite a bit bigger than 55”. Meaning that the monitor is too big for your distance. I recall them saying over on Boosted Media that 65” was too big and if that could do it all over again they would have gone with 55”. Finally, these are relative compromises. Slightly less resolution in exchange for frame rate, HDR, Gsync etc. It is a personal choice as to what one picks. For example, I would much rather have a pixel shifting faux-4k projector with HDR and good motion compensation than a native 4 k projector without. When moving to a native 4k projector with those same attributes, the change in resolution was mildly noticeable. The improvement to HDR and motion performance was much more appreciable (new generation tech). And this is on a 150” screen. What brand TV do you have? That can play a big role in the quality of upscaling.

And to be technical, I'm not saying I'm seeing the individual pixels of my 4K TV, but when you upscale 1440p to 4K, in-game pixels are indeed more visible and can become blurry, as upscaling is just not the same as running the software at 4K.
Well, Boosted Media is also doing triples, and their setup is specifically for sim racing. I'm just running a single, and my TV is also for watching sports, movies, porn 😛, etc... In terms of viewing distance for a 4K screen, me sitting at about 4.5 feet is right around the range of minimum recommended viewing distance for a 65" TV. For example, SONY recommends a distance of 3.94 feet from a 65" 4K TV, as " _Viewed from this distance, individual pixels cannot be differentiated by naked eyes. This means that pixels effectively disappear when viewing 4K images. This creates the impression of watching TV pictures with the same detail and resolution as real life._ " Of course, you can find other references that say 5.5 feet is the minimum, but hey... whatever. haha
So the issue is, when I'm sitting at the "ideal" distance from my 4K TV, running at 1440p causes noticeable pixelation and worsens the immersion, to my eyes.
I suppose I could sit further away from my 4K TV when running at 1440p in order to be at a distance where my eyes can no longer see the pixelated/blurred effect, but that also lowers the immersion - being further from the screen. As you said, many of these things are personal preference. I prefer to sit in the ideal 4K TV distance to maximize size immersion and look at a real crisp ultra high-res image.

Note that I am not arguing with you about resolution. I am merely trying to point out that there are a lot of factors that come into play when determining what resolution is enough for a particular person. Their eyesight, their seating distance, the quality of the TV, the quality of the upscaling algorithms all play a critical part. :-)

If you Need 4K to Do Motorsport then you should just play RPG. Once you see 120Hz and higher, (not 60Hz) its a game changer, and you don't care about looks anymore.
