    We've been receiving a tonne of questions about our Triple 65 inch 4K Motion Sim Rig Build, so today I'll do my best to answer them, as well as cover some of the things we've learned through the process, and things we would do differently next time.
    In particular we'll talk about whether or not larger screens are worth it over smaller ones closer to the driver, as well as comparing this setup to the immersion offered by VR.

I am running both a Vive Pro and an Index but just don't have the space (yet) for triples. I have the same frame rates (roughly) with ACC on my 2080ti. Absolutely spot on with the three dimensional effect, I always try to put monitors where the windscreen would be and then create three dimensions by using an iPad for the dash etc. I use triple 24 inch screens at 90cm away, with side angles at about 31 degrees, I don’t see any of the dash on screen hardly but I then create the dash using an iPad. The field of view I get is only about 110 degrees this way, but I much prefer it to putting the centre screen 50 cm away with almost 180 degree FOV. I’ve tried both and the former is way more immersive. My screens are 1920 x 1200 each, but at 90 cm away they are perfectly fine and detailed, in fact they are equivalent of a Retina display at that distance, at 50cm away they look ropey and things just don’t feel right as you say.

  • @StraightRocketFuel
    @StraightRocketFuel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just ordered some LG C1 55s, can’t wait to try it out! I used the Reverb G2 for quite a while and the 3D effect is incredibly immersive. My issue with it was 1) not being able to see my steering wheel, shifter, button box, extra dash screens, etc really broke immersion as the physical world you’re interacting with wasn’t the same as the VR world and 2) by far the biggest issue for me personally - the headset was uncomfortable for anything longer than maybe 20-30 minutes. For whatever reason, my face and neck hurt no matter what I did and I found myself no longer looking forward to hopping into the cockpit. I swapped out to a single 34” curved ultrawide and immediately the love was back. As you mentioned though, the vertical FOV was much too small, and tbh the width was much too small as well. At realistic FOVs in game I could not see my mirrors, cars next to me, etc. For people who want max immersion and don’t want a bunch of peripherals I think VR is absolutely worth a shot. Maybe you’ll find it more comfortable than I did. Otherwise for the budget conscious I would go with a triple monitor set up of some sort over an ultrawide, likely 32” as you suggest although I haven’t tried that size personally so can’t say for sure. Thanks for the great vids, looking forward to your future content.

    Jumping from a single 24" to 3x 32" was the best thing i ever did for my rig tbh. Nowhere near as extreme as your rig, but still provides an incredibly immersive experience. From 65cm away, i don't find the vertical resolution is much of an issue. My only 2 complaints are the footprint (takes 1.4x1.5m), and the fact that i need a top of the line GPU in this market.

My current rig manages to run acc on mixed high-epic settings at full 11520x2160 resolution at around ~50-70fps, other simulators dont have any issues running absolutely maxed 60+fps. This is a good video and some solid advice. Let's face it, to have a rig like that you need 3 things: A lot of space, A lot of money, and a very understanding Significant Other. For me personally while I could afford it I have a small house and a wife that is understanding within reason, but not to this extent lol. I get by just fine with my < $1000 setup consisting of a Quest 2, a Thrustmaster T-150, and a Playseat Challenge. Ok the pedals suck and I'm working on upgrading those, but other than that I'm pretty happy with it. As with most things, if you start chasing the best experience money can buy, you'll find the best experience money can buy costs a LOT of money.

    I'm sure you could get by, quite well, with consumer TVs. 3 TCLs or Vizios will provide standard 60/120hz refresh rates, plus calibration settings are readily available from the community. Also HDR isn't a huge added expense. $3k should do it today, and next year the models will offer variable refresh rate for the same price.

    Great video - Maybe you commented and I missed it, but one big thing that VR brings through the separate views for each eye is the resulting 3D image and the depth perception that brings. Not a big thing when driving a track you know by "muscle memory", but for me it's a huge differentiator when driving a car/track combo you don't know, and you need to get a feel for the braking and turn-in points.

  • @brycedevans
    @brycedevans 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Around the 16 minute mark you are talking about one of the downsides of triples being that your perspective doesn't change because the camera is fixed on a triple screen setup vs. VR where the in game camera moves as you move your head. I had the same experience when transitioning from VR to triples, and I ended up using the TrackIR5 head tracking device so that the in-game camera would change perspective as I moved my head around the cabin of the car. It works great on my triple 32" setup!

    Just a comment about fov in vr. My experience as a former kart, bike and car racer is that the fov I get in my Quest 2 vr headset is similar to wearing a full face helmet. It could be argued therefore that this is more realistic.

    Hey, I like the perspectives given in this video - but have you ever considered or looked into TrackIR for tracking head movements in-game? Just curious as it would add another level of immersion to your current 3x 65 inch setup.

    • @PetrisonRocha
      @PetrisonRocha 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      TrackIr in this setup would definitely hurt instead of helping. He already has much more peripheral view than he needs, anyway

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep I’ve experimented with it. In fact we’re using a trackIr as motion compensation as explained here: th-cam.com/video/7-yTnXUHK7w/w-d-xo.html
      But yeah as head tracking it’s just weird.

    • @kobeandgary
      @kobeandgary 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't see any use for head tracking in this setup.

    • @TheDarcris007
      @TheDarcris007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kobeandgary In games that require 360 degrees or thereabouts of vision such as Elite: Dangerous or DCS / any sort of cockpit simulation you would need TrackIR to be able to look around the cabin / up / down / behind you ect. So it is still applicable depending on the games

    How big of a 'immersion' change would it be for you if you spent a day running your rig with the screens running at 2920x1080 as opposed to 4k which may be easier to attain fiscally both in tv's/monitors not to mention computer hardware? Watching this video reminded me very much of driving 2300 km's for a vacation years ago.

  • @mervyoung5397

    What an amazing rig! I'm in love with it! How do you think a triple 34" ultrawide setup would look? I'd love to go bigger using 50"-55" screens but it's not practical in the space I have. 😕

  • @Flyright07

    Tobii eye track could add a lot to the immersion - eye and head movement.

    I would guess the best bang for buck is Reverb G2 + DOF Reality H6. It's not without compromises but will result in really nice simulations. On the plus side you get the best VR display for sim racing + full 6 DOF motion platform. One the minus side that platform is slightly on the slow side and doesn't ability to run 3 monitor setup even in theory. For the cost, nothing can beat it, though.

    Your setup is da sheet, reminds me of my former build with 3 ACER 5360 Beamers that gave me a fantastic immersion back then. Now I am hooked on VR with a Quest 2. You mentioned the downsides that come with having a Headset in front of your eyes, but if you are a fan of coming close to realism, once you tried a good VR Setup its veeery hard to go back to screens. I think future generations of Headsets with eye-tracking will make racing more and more perfect, or even wait for proper AR to bring your real gear into the picture, we will see... I even saw a review of a VR Headset (Varjo XR3) with additional OLEDs, Eye-tracking and AR-Cameras build in, but its not affordable. Maybe get yourself one and make a review how that beast works in simracing? Besides that, i really dig the content you make, really professional stuff and tons of useful informations

    Apparently alot of people talk of a narrow field of view with the G2 despite great resolution where as with the valve index you can glance around the screen without moving your head as much as for screen door there are some people where their brains always see the screen door and can't get past it. VR surprisingly isn't for all. Good review Will but you need to try a valve index aswell. That being said who wouldn't want this setup :-)

    I noted that you felt the 65"screens may be slightly to large and slightly too far away for a 1-to-1 feel. What triple display stand are you using that can accommodate 3 x 55" displays? Greatly appreciate the feedback.

    As a VR user another downside to VR I have noticed is when you want to go back to the menus and watch replays. Many of the cameras in iRacing feel zoomed way too far out so I make my own custom cameras. Since VR uses a fixed FOV it over rides my cameras. Additionally to that, when you’re watching replays you can still freely look which is great if you set up a spectator grandstand view, but for other views such as fixed views (broadcast TV views) it kind of takes away from the viewing experience.

    The amount of bread you spend sponsoring or not is Krazy lol.. I hope to have a dope setup close to this with a movement seat in maybe a yr or so from now. But as you said, space and money is the restriction.. hope to atleast jump in right away with a DD2 or Sim2 Ultimate with good peddles and shifter/e b.. def doing a slow build so I can go VR as well and have qualify parts.
