- I was surprised at how fun I found the Minecraft episode, especially as somebody who's not a fan of the video game whatsoever. "Diamonds and Lemons" was packed with laughs, but also has a nice sentiment behind the hijinks.

I didn't talk about it in this review, but that custom pixel intro sequence for this episode was astounding and chock-full of so many character cameos. Did y'all notice the few frames that Ash was on-screen as well as Finn and Jake turning into Fionna and Cake on the title splash?

Did you notice how jake only threw diamonds in when Finn was there?
Uncivilized Elk Vanilla No Mods was I think to say that there is no added modded way to get more diamonds. Pretty much, if you lose a diamond in Vanilla you lose it forever. It being a game doesn't matter and you can beat the game without them. But the player sees it as more despite it not being neccesary. Like a gold watch and a 20 dollar watch. Both perform the same function and only the 20 dollar one is needed to tell the time. But we give value to the gold as it is a rare material that is shiny.
When Jake's shouting "Vanilla no mods" he's bragging about how successful he is. in a modded game diamonds are often much easier to come by, so he's saying that he's doing it legit. He's essentially flexing.
Weird flex but ok
Except when you know how to duplicate in Minecraft, I've got a world created in survival where I have stacks of diamond blocks because after you have at least 18 diamonds, some redstone, a dispenser and crafting table. With a quick change between diamonds to diamond blocks you sometimes get two blocks from one 9 stack of diamonds. Boom, you have stacks upon stacks of diamond blocks in a world that's *VANILLA NO MODS!*

Two things in this episode upset me:
1. Jake wasting diamonds
2. The Enderman didn't the damage and teleport out of the rain
Yes I know that this is a post made a year ago but idc. The fact that Finn didn’t put the pumpkin on his head also bothers me and that the Ender man was mad at Finn instead of mr pig is also wrong

I'm just a bit pissy that the enderman didn't go away when it rained. They did justice with the pumpkin, but the few seconds of rain was enough to break my immersion. Yikes, minecraft really is hardwired into my brain.

This feels like an old Adventure time episode in terms of the fun involved.
I can see a lot of people labeling this with the generic automatic response of "Cringe"
It seemed to capture the feelings I got when first playing the game. Mostly the scene when the sun rises, the underground bits, and the night. It's a great feeling, and I wish I could play the game for the first time again.
Funnily enough, a game many would call 2d Minecraft, Terraria is a game I've called the closest thing I've played to a video game version of Adventure time. Speaking in terms of World, and tone, not humor and characters.
RedGeoBlaze Terraria is incredible, and I agree, it's definitely more than just a 2D MC. It's like a weird magical romp

This episode just goes to show that you should never judge in episode until you watch it from start to finish. I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. It's definitely worthy of being one of the last episodes of Adventure Time because in my opinion it really captured the fun-loving nature of the series

The, "vanilla no mod" was a reference back to the old days when there was no mods. It refers to the super hipster folks who played it when there was no mods. They kept insisting that Minecraft is best with no mods. That's probably also due to the amount of diamond ore he got. In vanilla mod, diamond was really hard to find. I kinda got it since I was one of those "og" Minecraft players lol.

It was that Jake was griefing, aka destroying shit (diamonds, a rare-ish resource) for no reason, and there was nothing anyone could do on a vanilla server with no modifications installed, to undo the damage.

I enjoyed how this episode was clearly designed by people who had played / created Minecraft. Sometimes there's a very superficial implementation of different aspects. However, when I saw the cow in the trees (they spawn in weird places) or the pumpkin head to protect from Endermen, I knew that there was a Minecraft Angel looking out for us gamers
“Vanilla no mods” is something someone says when playing Minecraft who has so much diamonds that they can act carelessly with them. I was so happy to see that they added that (old) Minecraft expert joke
I feel like this episode contained a lot of maybe personal feelings that a lot of the adventuretime staff feel now that adventuretime is ending. this was their very last kind of non-consequence episode and as a result some of the messages given (like a not getting what you wanted but making the most of a bad situation and only being able to enjoy stuff for a short amount of time which leads to its beauty) are maybe feelings that the staff are a bit connected with now that adventuretime is coming to a close. That's just how I saw it anyways 🤷♂️
I dunno i found the whole schpiel about happiness coming from the hard work itself not the result, to the point the result is wholly irrelevant, after jake destroyed the diamonds incredibly counterproductive stupid and wholly untrue.
The happiness comes from looking at a result and saying "i made this" and having a chip on your shoulder. And then looking at it again and again, admiring the fruits of your labour and the effort and feelings and memories you put into it. Forming a connection to a thing and ascribing meaning. Heck this doesn’t even require one finding happiness in the act of making the thing. The thing brings you happiness all the same, its a sliver of you in the world. The result and goal is important, sometimes enough to make people do things they don't particularly like because they like the result. Or you simply enjoy the fruits of your labour by using the thing you made
And then there's the making things for others to concider, like making a show like adventure time which many will enjoy. The happiness the creators of the show felt came from people enjoying the show, they didn't just chuck the storyboards in a fire becaise yep working on this eas fun but thats it.
If on the other hand you do find happiness in the process of making a thing or achieving something, that's no different than enjoying any activity, thus rendering this whole speech irrelevant, as its now essentially saying "you know when you have fun, you have fun"
I mean didn't they presumably build that tree house they are currently enjoying? Didn't treetrunk make that pie which they enjoyed eating? They didn't make the treehouse and put fire on it or chuck the pie in lava, they enjoyed the fruits of their labours
Heck, the episode closes at them both admiring a lava waterfall from a rocket, the result of something finn didn't even make himself. Likewise if it was fireworks as intended, the happiness would have come from using ab ephemeral thing not from the hard work making the ephemeral thing
I used to draw Minecraft in a blocky adventure time style 7 years ago. Imagine my suprise, and instinctive checking of every nook and cranny in my appartment for hidden cams. Jk I really do love they did this. A cute sendoff to my enjoyment of Minecraft (my enjoyment died 3 years ago) and an extra bit of love for Adventure Time as it ends.

I've Always been a huge Minecraft fan and I like this episode allot! Mainly because most minecraft themed shorts and episodes by shows have no real knowledge of the game, and just joke about what the game is on the surface. But this episode really feels like it was made by fans of the game!
All I could think of when Jake was saying Vanilla, no mods is a minecraft let's player named Etho, who would regularly throw diamonds into lava as a joke and he typically played the vanilla version of the game without mods installed.

I'm so surprised you said ", with some help finally gets it to grow," when I thought the moment of PB teaching Lemongrab about horticulture was both an amazing throwback to All Your Fault and a beautiful moment of Lemongrab finally getting some of the kind of relationship he's always wanted with his mother. It was so great when he finally realized that that was what was happening and just completely lost his shit with joy! Man I loved that moment. I'd be really curious to hear you talk about that a bit if you'd gotten a similar impact from it.
This episode was surprisingly great! Especially for the fact that it was actually pretty accurate! Most of what we see there is ACTUALLY in the game, like the monsters burning in the sunrise, the bonemill speeding up the tree's growth, Finn riding a pig, the Enderman only being agressive when looked in the eyes...
And of course Bubblegum would be an expert in using redstone (that red trail she was making when she first appeared). That's the most complicated feature in the game.
Overall i think it was a pretty good game based episode. Usually when a cartoon do an episode like this either it's VERY on point, but extremely cringy, or completely different from the actual game and... also, extremely cringy. But they did a pretty good job! It doesn't look exactly similar (and THANK GLOB for that... that would be cringy as fuck), but it's still pretty acurate.
Great job AT crew. Great job!
But now the pain of having to wait a whole month (and 5 days) for the finale...
On the bit about the episode being accurate to the game, one of my favorite details was the elevator. It was only there for a second, but that little detail really brought me back.
There is a minor hiccup when there is a rainstorm but the Enderman doesn't wig out but that just seems to be a storyboarding error more than anything else
The Enderman scene was the only thing they got wrong, I expected him to teleport everywhere and Finn to be weirded out by it.

That was probably one of the funniest scenes in my opinion.
I think it's fine but knowing they basically made it because they wanted to make one more episode, instead of CN saying "Hey minecraft wants to do a crossover episode so do that" makes it a lot more interesting.
Might be worth a re-watch at some point because I just zoned out halfway through.

I used to be a super fangirl for a guy that started out with fact videos and then made a LP channel where he (mostly but not just) played Minecraft a lot with like different "challenges" (?, dont know what they're called). He stopped a few years ago and started a music career in rap which is actually really good. Though he does sometimes still make videos but not on MC. But Damn. Those were the best years I've spent on TH-cam.

The "vanilla, no mods" is referring to the rarity of diamonds. As it is the rarest minable ore, getting that many diamonds with no mods is a very hard thing to do.

I too enjoyed this episode very much. However I feel Jake throwing Diamonds in lava is more a representation of how little he takes value in things and people, as he treats everyone with a relaxed and incoherent attitude. Not to say he doesn't care, he just doesn't care to intervene.
He was basically a Vanilla pro and got rich without Mods, hence "Vanilla no Mods" and hes simply being a rich person burning his money on unnecessary things, or literally burning it in lava.

I laughed the hardest at the "vanilla no mods" joke. Jake would be THAT guy who refuses to play with any mods while throwing diamonds into lava to entertain himself. If you play minecraft at any long stretch of time you will come across "that guy" that jake embodies.

The "Vanilla, no mods" thing was a reference to X-ray mods used by Minecraft hackers (usually on competitive servers) to get diamonds more easily. These hackers are banned and the diamonds are thrown in lava.
The_dark _chinchilla just cause you have x-ray does not mean you are a hacker. The only way to have x-ray on Minecraft Xbox one, you have to have a resource blocks where stone, andisite, dirt etc.

This episode was ahead of it's time look at minecraft now good job adventure time.
Something I love about this episode is that it really captures both the feel of old adventure time and old minecraft beta espesially the scene where finn looks over the hill and sees all the mobs burn and the background detail looks alot like the old world generation this epsiode made me very nostalgic as I played alot of minecraft in 2010 and 2011 which at the time I was also watching A lot of adventure time as well so the fact that it captured both the vibes of my childhood is amazing.
I never thought i would hear adventure time characters saying "It's a Enderman" and "You've been griefed"

5:38 I take this as the fact that he got all the diamonds legit, and got them in a large enough quantity to do this, rather then getting them in mass with various mods like build craft quarries. It’s much less of an achievement to causally throw diamonds in lava enmass when you get them with mods

Fins comment at the end kind of got me. Whenever I am creating something beautiful in Minecraft, there's always a little voice inside me telling me that it's not real and there is no purpose to it. Except my own happiness, which I feel guilty about. Then I watch more cartoons and forget about it.

The atmosphere and world of Minecraft fits so well with Adventure Time's. Both are expansive, open-ended, sometimes melancholic fantasy worlds that spark a sense of exploration and creativity (in me at least). Also combining Adventure Time and Minecraft means this is probably the most 2010s piece of media that exists.

I legit can't believe Adventure Time has one episode left.
BTW while watching this special, I couldn't help but get some early Adventure Time vibes, which I felt was really cool. It was kinda like revisiting the past before the big finale, back when everything was simpler (though still including characters, like Lemograb, and plot points, like PB and Marcelie's relationship, which were introduced later on). This was truly a fun and calm episode that is preparing us for September.
