    Spot on about the tent when travelling, good choices. I fitted wider handlebars to my Boardman, A: because I find wide more comfortable anyway,B; It gave me more room for front loading. On short trips, I strap on a DD Hammocks 8L pack to carry brew kit and snacks. The off bike kit is also important, need to dress comfortably. What did you do for hygiene, on multi days if not using campsites I use shower in a bottle splash which works.....for a few days anyway when sitting in the pub and not clamping the armpits :)

    Thank you for the video.. I use the smaller front panier bags and put them on the back, Where your dry bag is on the back i use a backpack it's really use full , I can just throw it on my back when i need to go into a store ,

      Our panniers are 12.5l so they are the ones commonly used on the front too but we have them on the back rather than big 20l ones. Good idea with the backpack 👍

    Hi! Really love the setup! Could you show us how you did it to stop the panniers from rattling?

    Great overview! 100% agree on most points, especially the tent size. A few notes and points from my side:
    - I would add a top tube bag to this, as well as a food pouch stem bag. They're fantastic for easy access iand snacking on the ride.
    - A common argument against pannier bags is that they're not aerodynamic and will make you go slower. But they are incredibly easy to pack, which can save you a lot of time in the morning, so they're definitely worth it if you're going on a long trip and you need the carrying capacity.
    - Even without pannier bags, the rack is still worth it. Like you say it's a great platform for putting stuff on top. I'm a tall guy so I can tightly fit a saddle bag alongside a bag on top of my rack. Once you go rack you never go back! 😀

      I did consider the top tube or stem bag but in the end I didn't need any more space. With having the two handlebar bags it makes it easy to access snacks!

    Great video!! After a few trips I ended up with almost exactly the same setup as you guys, I was trying to avoid the panniers to save the 1.5kg that they weigh, but I like being self suficient for at least two days and that was not possible without them.

      Nice one! 👍 Yeah it depends what kind of trips you're doing but that small bit of extra weight for the panniers is worth it for us.. and they're so easy to pack!

    When you bike and hike you notice the panniers for sure also if you pack the seat post correctly it wont sway … just subbed look forward seeing your setup ps how much water you carry

    • @lookpastlimits
      @lookpastlimits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if we go for any shorter trips where we will be hiking with the bike then for sure I'd rather change to a saddle bag setup. But for this longer more relaxed trip the panniers were awesome 👍
      I carry 2 or 3 750ml bottles depending on where we're going and access to water.

    It seems that nowadays whatever you do or are you have to fit into a 'drawer'. I have owned a bike since '91 but only a couple of years ago started cycling further than a trip down to the shop. I love touring around and the 2 drawers (bike packing or touring) don't fit my wardrobe. Before coming across your and for the same reasons video my bike set up was
    more or less the same as yours, and still is. As a solo traveller I have to carry everything, but living in Portugal there isn't usually a weather problem and tent can be just a bivvy bag and suchlike. My panniers are Crosso front pannier bags used on rear rack (15 litres each max), and a selection of frame bags etc. picked up in sales at various sport shops. I'm interested, does the exra bar thing work well and not slip round the handlebar?
    Those seat post racks for bike packing appear to weigh(and cost) much the same as a rear rack from what I've seen. Thanks for the video. Nicely and clearly presented.

    Loving the set up ,Especially the Ortlieb Kit. Can the Ortlieb Pannier bags be used on the front as well as the back.
    Ta

      Cheers 👍 For us at the moment they can only be used on the back because we have the rack there. But they are small enough to be used on the front with a front rack as a full on cycle touring setup 👍

    I don’t understand what problem bikepacking is trying to solve. What’s wrong with panniers?

    • @lookpastlimits
      @lookpastlimits  ปีที่แล้ว

      There's nothing wrong with panniers in our opinion but bikepacking compared with cycle touring is mostly about the weight saving which can be achieved by using smaller bags which strap to the frame meaning no need for metal racks. It makes a difference off-road, especially on single track etc but on long distance cycle path stuff the weight saving doesn't make much of a difference. That's our take on it anyway 👍

    what is the brand and type of tour pannier rack? I would use your fork for extra water bottles in your setup and a bento box comes in handy as well

    • @lookpastlimits
      @lookpastlimits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rack is an aluminium one from Force Bike Components - I'd recommend it so I'll try and add a link for it into the video description 👍
      I have space for 3 bottles with this setup so I'm fine for water and I would rather have the weight of the water on the frame rather than on the carbon fork. If I ever need any more water I'll take a water filter rather than more bottles I think. And if I ever add anything to the fork mounts it will need to be something light because it's carbon. 👍

    Yeah it a hybrid for sure

    • @lookpastlimits
      @lookpastlimits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it is a hybrid for sure. But it's a great setup for this style of trip and could work for a lot of people we think, especially in Europe where there's lots of cycle routes on mixed surfaces or cycle paths 👍

    Thanks for uploading but your problem will be everything gets full of mud due to no mud guards, unless your fitting them later

  • @Bikepacking

    The truth is you can do a pure bikepacking setup without need for panniers even if your going 4 season and lot camera gear and lot of food and camping it just takes time to learn

    • @lookpastlimits
      @lookpastlimits  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to take less stuff then I'm sure it is possible yeah. But I'd rather have the stuff with me for a longer trip. Maybe I'll reduce the luggage for shorter trips in the future but keep this setup for longer ones 👍

    • @Bikepacking
      @Bikepacking ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lookpastlimits i think you misunderstood not about taking less stuff to be able to do a bikepacking setup .it about in how to pack just takes a lot of practice and rear arranging gear that all ..

    • @lookpastlimits
      @lookpastlimits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bikepacking I didn't misunderstand you. I'm not going to be able to fit the same amount of stuff into less luggage space. I can rearrange it, but it's still going to be the same weight and same overall size, just spread out differently on the bike.
      I'd rather have sturdy panniers that are easy to pack than lots of random dry bags strapped everywhere all over the bike.

    Leider kann das nicht das ultimative Bikepackung Setup sein, denn dann wäre dieses Video das einzige auf TH-cam.
