  • The Rex Ambassador Adjustable Safety Razor is amazing. As far as adjustable razors got this safety razor provides one of the best shaves on the planet. Unfortunately, I don't like this razor at all. For and adjustable, I enjoy the ergonomics, weight, diversity of blade gap, and quality of shave. It still doesn't do it for me.

Makes sense to me. I think for most of us, shaving is a journey. We may think we're looking for the perfect razor, or blade, or soap, etc... but in reality were using that as our reason to keep buying cool new razors and the newest artisan soaps. Actually finding the perfect razor ruins that process. And also means that every new razor you try after that will somehow be lacking.
I don't want a perfect razor. I want a huge collection of razors!

I’m at that point. I have most of the best and The Rex Ambassador has reset the bar,😢 at least for now. As I wait to see what Rex can create to top the Ambassador, it’s on to blades and soaps! I’m hoping to see a TTO version of the Ambassador.

The Rex Ambassador has honestly destroyed my will to shave with any other razor.
It’s basically got everything I want in one razor:
    Smooth☑️
    Adjustable. ☑️
    Made in a non-third world country.☑️
    Stainless steel. ☑️
    Heavy.☑️
    Aggressive knurling.☑️
    Aesthetically pleasing. ☑️

Yeah, I can relate, as I don't really love mine. Everything is right on it, other than feeling head heavy to me. Yesterday I used my '68 Gillette Slim Adjustable and got a shave as good or better than the Ambassador. Lately I've really been preferring my '47/51 Gillette Tech Fat Handle to all my other razors. There's just something so cool about using a tool that was utilized by those who came before me, and before our country became the cesspool it is now.

Greg, I feel the same exact way except with the Rockwell 6S. It has so little personality and not very fun to use, even if I do like the shaves it gives. It reminds me so much of a cartridge razor. The Rex Ambassador on the other hand I love, been using it since most regularly since August 2020. IIRC, the smoothest shave I've ever had was a three pass shave with the Rex. It just deleted the hair off my face.
Also that comment on having a relationship with a razor and not it being a tool is one of the truest things I've heard in this weird little hobby of ours. Most people wouldn't understand!

    • @GregTardif

I agree, but for different reasons! That’s just awesome that’s it’s made here, I’m with you 100% on that.
1 - The price. I’m not paying $250 for a safety razor, I’m just not, I flat-out refuse. Not saying that the Ambassador isn’t worth the money, just saying I’m not paying that much for a safety razor, period. Flame away, lovers of the Ambassador, I understand.
2 - I’m just not a fan of adjustables nor TTO’’s (even though I own one) and here’s why. They all have really bulbous heads which are great for removing a lot of hair quickly, but pretty lackluster at getting under your nose or detailing the edge of your mustache, goatee and sideburns, nor little bits of hair.
3 - I’m a huge fan of 3-piece razors. They’re modular, so you can pick the perfect handle and head for you.
Razorock makes the Lupo Stainless from a solid billet of 316L marine-grade stainless for $70.00 out the door! This razor will also last your entire life, it’s machined to super-tight tolerances, plus they make 7 plates for it so you can customize your shave. The Lupo also also has a shallow enough radius to handle detail-work with aplomb. While Razorock makes great handles, (especially the Super-Knurl, IMO), I find they’re a bit short for head-shaving, but they’re standardized so their heads work with Maggard and WCS handles too, and that’s exactly what I use!
So, I guess I’m ultimately a Frankenrazor guy, because I feel that’s the best of all worlds, you can make your ideal all-stainless razor for under $100 that will last your entire lifetime, if not longer!
That’s just my $.02 on this matter, as we all say, YMMV.

I think part of the fun in tradition shaving is the variables and the challenges. Different soaps, different blades, different razors and even base plates on the same razor.
That being said sometimes finding a dead end to a path... Even if it's the one that is the perfect end is unnerving because you want the adventure and the learning to continue.

Funny as I just started using vintage razors and fell in love with them. Right now my four are Goodwill, Red Tip, Slim, and Executive Fatboy. But I have been curious if the Ambassador would be a better razor all around. Curious if new tech is better than old tech. But I love my four vintage razors they are so smooth, have history, style and I can get a clean shave with two passes both on my face and head. I got all four of these razors for about the price of the Ambassador give or take a bit.
By the way your video skills are top notch!
For now I think I will stick to these four. My issue is I don't have room for a ton of razors and shaving gear, so I have to be selective. I live in a 32ft RV with my wife and our two Great Danes. So space is something I don't have a ton of lol.

I am glad I watched videos and read reviews on badger and blade before I purchased the Ambassador. I have sensitive skin, and thought I'd give the Ambassador a try. I know Matt Pisarcik has sensitive skin as well, so thought he would produce a razor for people with sensitive skin. However, everyone in the wet shave community said it's aggressive with lots of blade feel, which I don't like. I have much more appreciation for efficient but mild smooth razors, that's a much more difficult engineering challenge IMO. Glad I didn't by the Ambassador ! However, I did buy the Konsul and I LOVE IT. The Rex Konsul is a tank, it's gorgeous, and it is a great shaver.

    • @GregTardif
      @GregTardif  ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah I think the konsul is more refined and better shaver (for me) than the ambassador. Aggressive razors can be better for people with sensitive skin though

The Ambassador is whatever you want to be. On 1, it almost feels like I forgot the blade. I only use it for third pass or if I shaved the previous day. On 6, it will shred a 7 day beard without pressing AT ALL and smoothly as well. (Added pressure could easily lead to regrets; Think R41).
But, I still love my vintage Gillettes, particularly the Fatboy, but my go to has become the Ambassador. Back and forth between those two, a lot. But, that’s what makes shaving enjoyable, for the first time ever, as odd as it sounds. I never expected that part. 😮

I think you hit the nail on the head there. On the downside, it is very aggressive and hard to find the correct angle so weepers become common; on the other hand it's also super expensive. So, it's darn pretty and the knurling is neat but meh as an actual enjoyable tool. I have the 3 piece envoy - same experience.

How's this angle: I'm a Honda Civic kind of guy. If I had a Mercedes or BMW, I would be self-conscious that everyone would be like "look, a Beemer. That guy must be a jerk." I do have an Ambassador (used) on a Rex stand (scratch & dent). It is perfect. Nobody in the real world knows I own one or will ever see it in my bath. Yet, whenever I look at it I can't help thinking "am I the kind of jerk that would spend $150 for a razor?"

    • @GregTardif
      @GregTardif  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That’s definitely another way to look at it. I was happy to have tried it for a week. I think the civic vs bmw is an interesting way to look at it. The only thing I would say though, a lot of people spend more than that on artisan soaps and such, so I think it’s more to where the funds go. I see the Ambassador probably (maybe) outlasting a lot of my less expensive razors and I think if you just wanted one razor this would be the one to get for sure! You’re not a jerk 😁

I had the REX but didn’t like the way it shaved. Not gonna lie it’s a beautiful looking razor. Another thing I don’t like is the adjustability.
When it comes to vintage Gillette Adjustables it’s very simple….
    Settings 123= MILD …..456= medium 789= AGRESSIVE
But with the REX…. 1 is mild and the rest is agressive
I got a lot of flack for saying the Pearl Flexi was a better shaver. And it is IMHO

They're different for sure. I mean they serve the same purpose and share characteristics. Is it the holy grail for a guy who doesn't want to invest on 100+ razors, soap, aftershave? Sending my Gillette Slim for restoration lands the last price around 150€(tax+shipping+customs). I could buy a second hand Rex for the same price, so I don't know.

Quit trying to make love to your razor. It's a tool to give you a great shave. If it gives you a great shave love it; if not hate it. Don't hate a razor for not having personality. If you looking for personality, go meet a friend or have coffee with your wife or girlfriend.
