Such a lovely symphony! Schumann and Brahms enlarged...!

With some Bruckner and Strauss added, although Schmidt's own early style (as manifested in this work and Notre Dame) is already fully developed. Even here, though, the young Franz Schmidt uses a very extended tonality and his orchestration is already highly accomplished (if less distinctive than his later style).

Wonderful piece of music from a composer I had never heard of. Thanks for providing us with this and some other works of Mr. Schmidt

Schmidt is disgracefully neglected except by organists. His organ music is superb although among the most technically challenging ever composed.

      Franz Schmidt was a genius.

Another great symphonist of roughly the same period was Richard Wetz. All three of his symphonies can be found on TH-cam.

I discovered this symphony some time ago - now well established as a personal favourite. Thanks for sharing.

Each one of the 4 symphonies is unique and when I heard he sat under Gustav Mahler as principal cellist, that just added to the appeal, although musically more closely aligned with Brahms.. very impressive and highly under rated ..Schmidt is a technical genius of symphonic orchestration.

He is that indeed. But just as important, if not more, is that his themes are to die for.

Yes, Brahms in the structure, but Mahler is very present in his later symphonies (not so much in the 1st).

Schmidt is probably best known for his organ music. I didn't realise he had written so much for orchestra.

Wow, finally after all my search a wonderful new symphony. Better than all the Spohrs and Kaliwodas and these spurious guys.
