Fantastic Symphony of a great composer.

I'm starting to think Schmidt may be my favorite symphonic composer (darn, and I have so many already....). Where Bruckner leave me mostly cold, Schmidt's music engages me to the max. Everything is just so beautiful, so organized, so sincere, so tasteful, so passionate, so "right". The Malmo orchestra under Sinaisky do it absolutely proud, excellent performance and recording. Many thanks for all your great uploads !

But through Schmidt you *could* learn to love Bruckner. The figuration towards the end of the slow movement of Schmidt's Second String Quartet is obviously derived from similar figuration in the adagios of Bruckner's Seventh and Eighth Symphonies. Schmidt's regular use of a triple metre scherzo + trio is also a tribute to Bruckner. Here's the quartet movement: th-cam.com/video/VRqL2irrqOs/w-d-xo.html
And here's the adagio of Bruckner 7: th-cam.com/video/PwWWyTWvH5A/w-d-xo.html

I have the same feeling about this music. Very tidy and compelling.

Sinaisky's recordings of the Schmidt symphonies are simply superb - may be the best integral set. Every detail is clear and beautifully shaped.

This recording is better than the one Neeme Järvi did with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The slower tempi do more justice to the character of the piece, and the overall sound that this conductor gets out of his orchestra is fuller and more harmonious.

43:41 & 49:21 such a beautiful passage. I wish Schmidt could expand it.

Combine Bruckner's massive orchestration and mastery of form and highly original harmonic language, with Chopin's lyrical free-flowing melody-writing, and Berlioz' innovative orchestration techniques... Franz Schmidt became one of my favourite composers almost overnight after I discovered this piece!
