I’m a 73 year old farm kid and retired CPA. I’ve helped many small business owners. Thank you for this video. Thank you for your love of farming. Thank you for taking on something very few will do. Hearing the cost of your farm operation will frighten most people to death. Your courage is what makes America great. I’m sure some people watch your videos thinking how easy she has it. “She’s just a farmer”. Ask them if they want to borrow $1,000,000, pray for good weather, pray to stay healthy, work 4,000+ hours a year in the hope of having enough profit to do it all over again next year. Don’t ever apologize for letting the stress out. If someone criticizes you for it simple tell them to go to hell. God Bless!

When i saw the emotions starting to pour out I immediately understood. And it got to me good. I cannot imagine the stress and the financial carrying cost you live daily. That is incredible. I’m 66 and still working full time but it makes my heart full and gives me little more faith in the young people today, that someone will be carrying on. I will never forget the day that my wife and I went into the poultry business. Nothing as big as what you and Grant are doing but it was stressful for us. We had four broiler houses and borrowed over $300,000.00 to build them on land that we already owned. People do not understand that farming is 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. We have been in our poultry houses when thunderstorms hit and lightning was running up and down the cables in the houses. Wish you and Grant all of the good luck in the world. Old retired farmer by myself now.

I really love this channel. I’m from Nebraska. Born and raised. In fact, not very far from where you are (GI). You and Grant are literally what I miss about that state. There are some truly amazing, kind, hardworking and humble people in NE. You guys are such amazing ambassadors for not just the state, but also the farming industry.
Most people have No idea what pressure comes with running a successful small business. Most get nervous when they take out a 35K loan for a car or truck. Try risking it all every year like you guys and many other farmers do. It isn't for the faint of heart. Both you and Grant make me proud of our younger generation who often get a bad rap. There are good and bad in every generation and you two are some of the best. Keep it up and never ever apologize for letting your emotions come out. It shows how much this all means to you both farming and YouTubing.
You're right about small businesses. My parents started one back in the 80's and it was hit-or-miss for probably the first six years. Eventually they were able to expand and grow, but there were some tough times to get there. I remember one Christmas where they were so broke we literally got nothing except what the grandparents bought that year. The kids understood the seriousness of it, and if nothing else it brought us closer together.

As someone who grew up on a farm, I know the stress involved from watching my father. I also know what a great life it can be. What a fantastic opportunity the both of you have to have such a wonderful life.
i think theres gonna be a buttload of us viewers/fans that never really understood the mental aspect or financial aspect of farming/your farming. This video really does put into perspective what you're doing and going through.
Its not often we see the emotional side of Laura/Grant, but this video and the Farmers Last Ride vid, really remind us that yall are human and that life isnt always ham sandwiches and cat cuddles. And we true fans absolutely love you guys for being so down to soil and being genuine and being yourselves.

I'm a 66 year old Country Boy, my Father managed a large sheep and cattle grazing property for a Pastoral Company, and my Maternal Grandparents were into cropping, with some sheep and cattle. I've been following your channel for some years now.
It's very interesting to see how farming operations are carried on elsewhere.
It was phenomenally brave of you to put yourself out there and give us a breakdown of your numbers.

One of my cousins married a Farmer, and to sow 5000 acres of Barley, cost them $100,000 for diesel!!
When I was a lad, 45% of the Australian population was rural based.
Now it is only 12%, and still shrinking.
That Video, "A Farmers Last Ride" was especially poignant and tasteful.

Amen to that Aaron...the Aussie farmers endure so much in adverse weather...makes me wonder how they make ends meet at times...but through tenacity and the good old Aussie spirit...they somehow manage...and sadly it's a disappearing industry these days...whether it's sheep, cattle, crops or whatever the commodity, it's certainly an industry that we all must be thankful for for those who do go through the processes year after year to provide to the greater masses, and one that I personally couldn't be more respectful of those that farm this great land for what they endure.

As a 71 year old man who spent the first half of his life farming, I sincerely thank you for the most accurate portrayal of farming life I have ever seen! And for all the nonfarmier types out there, I can confirm the stress is sometimes so intense, it can be debilitating! It's just a good thing you get a little change of pace during the winter months to recharge and go again! The best advice I can give you is the same advice I received over 50 years ago. BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CHEW! THEN CHEW IT! May God be with you and bless your fledgling operation with much success and prosperity!
As a pastor, I know what it is to plant, and to water, and watch God give the increase...I Corinthians 3:6-9 (spreading the good news) But, planting and watering is very tough and strenuous work, whether preaching the gospel or farming in Nebraska!!! This is a big problem with farming a lot of people don't understand. It's a vitally important industry that requires long hours, hard work, and operates with razor thin margins, yet the costs involved are astronomical and there are people out there actively attacking this industry. Your emotions are perfectly understandable, Laura, and your channel goes a long way to lift the veil on the work and dedication that goes into what you do. God bless.
It is so easy for some to look at everything you have and make statements like "Well hey they have a lot of money to have all of those toys!?" Truth is it takes a LOT of work and LONG hours to get what you have and the ones thinking you have it easy probably do not know what HARD ACTUAL WORK is!!!? You have shown in this video yet again that you guys are completely normal and you have emotions just like the rest of us and I think that is a good thing. I have turned from a secure government job here in Australia, Rangering 26 years and Teaching 5 years, to running my own small, small business now 7 years. Its so good to see a young couple that is smart and hard working, it's something you don't see a lot today in young people. I know what the stress is I have felt the same way, at times, over the last 73 years and I am still farming. Farming gets in you blood and it's something you can't shake off no matter how hard you try. Farming is a profession that you can work hard and do the best you can and have little or nothing left, after you pay your loans, at the end of the year. Farmers are optimistic people and they will go for another year. We think next year will be better, maybe the weather will be better, maybe the corn and soybean prices will be up and sometimes it is better. The key to it all is make a good year stretch across a bad one the next year and keep your stress level even. There was a older man told me when I was young that "If you want more, work more" but in today's world you have to think more as well as work more. My hat's off to you two, just don't work so much that you burn yourself out and if you are unsure seek counsel of some one with a lot of experience.

I too was raised on a farm along time ago . We farmed with horses and worked from sun up to sun down . We never had much but we had a love of family and the land and this is something that can’t always be explained to some but this video brought back so many good memories and with it some tears of things passed . I still try to end each day looking out over the fields as the sun sets and give thanks for a life well lived . The best to you and Grant in your journey making your own awesome memories

Laura congratulations on your TH-cam channel. I’m an ex farmer based in the UK which is a totally different physical environment to North America. But there are similarities. The margins were always tight and still are today as friends tell me. I farmed full time in the 70’s when we had rampant inflation. Prices of fertiliser and other inputs just took off. Diversity saved the day for me, despite the stress of doing so. As you mentioned in your video today farmers today are doing other things and that’s what I did in the 70’s. Stress is an attitude of mind and clear thought and pragmatism I found to be the best way of dealing with stress.
When I was in my teenage years an old timer told me if you want to farm always have something to sell and if you have nothing to sell have a service you can provide. You have ticked both boxes although you may not realise it yet. You have your TH-cam channel which is excellent (a service) and your cattle which you could always sell if you need to. View livestock as dollars on legs and you won’t go far wrong. In my case it was pound notes. The timing of any sale may not be ideal but when you need it cash always has a value. You have Grant who is obviously interested in farming and you should share any stress with him as he should with you. Lots of luck and my very best wishes to you both tomorrow is always another day and bad days will just disappear from memory. 😅😅😅

Laura - I've just discovered your channel, and I've watched over half of your videos. Grew up farming, then moved away and became a blue collar worker. 57yrs old and have done a lot of things. You and Grant are incredible workers, and personalities. Love that you tear right into mechanical projects and fix things on your own. My daughter is the same way, as is my son. I'm proud of them as they are both white collar workers - but aren't afraid to get dirty and build/fix things.

All year I have been telling my friends, employees and such, about you and how hard you work, filming this channel and on the farm when most people are too lazy to even put in an honest 40 hour week.

Laura I just watched your video spelling out all your expenses. As a farmer myself and basically on the other end of my career path from you I'm 61, I understand where you're coming from. One thing you and Grant have going for you is your youth and the fact that I think both of you are smart in that you're watching your expenses watching your input and your outgo and placing your dollars where they need to be. You're smart to buy ground you can buy new equipment all the time or at least what you need but when it comes to dirt God's not making any more of that. I wish you the best admire the two of you for what you're doing if we didn't have people from your generation following mine we'd be in a world of hurt.

Thank you so much for this video. So many people today have no idea what goes into getting food on all of our tables. They take it for granted that this stuff will always just be on the shelves for them to buy, without considering that massive amounts of money and effort are needed to grow the food. Yes, yours is a small operation, but it's still bigger than most people would expect. You and Grant are doing amazing and meaningful work, as are farmers all over the world. Great video and thank you for sharing. I’ve been living on a 150 acre cattle farm for 3 years now and it has been amazing and the best experience for a young adult. The respect and support towards farmers should be given more then they get. Good luck on the 2023 season!

I have congratulate you guys on the home and property purchase. Nice nice place. Second I get it. Your conveying cost and stress. Most people have know idea what it takes to farm and produce food or feeds. Or the cost to ranching these days. They have know idea of sleep lost and days that turn into sometimes two straight. Sack lunches and lots of water and or coffee. Not like the fast food chain is at the end of the turn row here. Or a bath house when you get sprayed with oils or diesel. Change some clothes keep moving. I get it. Breaking even is hard to do at times and people never think of what farmers ranchers and truck drivers do. The risk, the loss of time and reality in something’s slips by. You guys do a great job and I’m just happy you share it on TH-cam
Congrats on purchasing your acreage. I know that not having to rent will make it less expensive but comes with it's own new set of challenges but I know you and Grant will tackle it like you do everything else. Farmers should be running the country as they know hard and long work, huge financial obligations, watching the weather forecasts, buying crop insurance, etc. Be very happy that your social media also helps out, as it may also inform those that have no idea how hard farmers work. Having witnessed my Parents and Grandparents going through the stress every year of making decisions in the spring and praying those were right, I understand what Farmers go through. It takes a lot of courage to farm I support and respect all Farmers. Thank you for this video. I hope it gives others a true understanding of what it takes to farm. My grandfather was an Iowa farmer with a small farm to raise his cattle. He grew exactly what he needed to breed the best quality cattle.Farmers are so much more deserving of praise and credit for what they do. What you do is so amazing, exceptional. I have been watching you and Grant farm now for a couple of years and I cannot express how much I admire you two for doing this. My late wife had 25 acres given to her which her cousin farms for us and I know first hand the costs. In addition, my Mother left our family trust about 250 acres that is part of a 460 acre track that my cousin owns. The gentlemen that farm it are really good and we continue to show a profit. However, I have seen several of my late wife's relatives have to sell their farms because they could not sustain it. Farming is a big gamble controlled by weather and the Good Lord, and it is up to the farmers to make it work despite the odds. I cannot imagine the stress and worry that you and Grant face each day. I wish both of you the best of luck and I will always look forward to yours, Grant's and your Dad's videos. I support you 110%.
Laura, an excellent educational video. Most people have no idea of the pressure farmers are under due to the huge expenses on the line every year. Also, most people do not realise how small a profit margin farmers make. It is a tuff gig being a farmer, it’s a love of the land.

WOW! What can I say, Except "THANK YOU"!!!! My ancestors farmed in southern Illinois, including my father until WWII. I know nothing about farming, except for the long hours and hard work it requires. And that doesn't even include the stress and financial risks involved. I have learned a lot watching your videos and truly appreciate what farmers are doing. I hope for much success and a very rewarding life.
My father was a dairy farmer and it was a great way to get a paycheck every week. That’s why he picked be a dairy farmer so he could get married and have a family. He would never have been able to have a family being a grain farmer. GOD BLESS YOU FOR BEING SO STRAIGHT FORWARD ON HOW EXPENSIVE FARMING IS. Love your videos

Congrats you two! I’m so happy for you about the property. I’ve always been to scared to jump into farming with both feet, I do the opposite, 40+ hours/week off the farm to be able to do the small scale farming that I do. So my hats off to you.
I've been self employed most of my life. In my 20s I could not have imagined working with that amount of $$$ and the responsibilities that goes along with it. I'm really impressed!!
My grandfather told me how stressful it was to buy a 200 acre farm in the early 20th century. He did it however, and remains one of my most influential mentors.
Buy? My ancestors go their Nebraska farmland for free through the Homestead Act. But you had to live on the land, and improve it for five years, or you would lose it. That was literally starting from nothing. There were no trees in Nebraska so people built dugout homes out of sod.
