That’s awful praying for family thanks deiter for your input and information on what to do and not to do and sharing preparedness is learned from people like you sir
I used to go striper fishing on Smith Mountain Lake in below freezing temps, and many times alone. I look back now and think how things could have went wrong very fast throwing a 10' cast net off the front deck.
So what happened with the flotation that is supposed to be in the boat? It is supposed to be enough to float the boat if completely filled. I would be checking into the Coast Guard certification of the boat.
@@DieterMelhorn ya gotta weigh the worth of the people over the worth of money. I’ve beached it before in bad weather. Rather lose a boat than the people on the boat.
Geez. Just awful. I do know from time to time that people do forget to put the plug in the back of the boat. Happens way more often than you think. And what happens is that you don’t realize rt away that water is coming into the hull of the boat until you are out on the water. And then things happen very fast, and it can be too late. If you are able to get the boat running, you just gun it full throttle to the nearest shore line you can get to with the bilge running, and just beach the boat if possible.
Four people in a boat? Doesn’t sound like they were part of the tournament. It sounds like the boat likely capsized due to heavy waves on the east side of the lake (S.Carolina). Possibly overloaded with four people. Not nearly enough information.
Thoughts and prayers for her family and thank goodness nobody passed away but for those that fish on boats wear life jackets a cooler is not going to save your life also keep an emergency lifeboat as well you never know when you'll need it to prevent a tragedy from occurring
To you fishermen in the world keep a portable life raft on your boat lafe at me it can saver your life one day think about it think smart while you are fishing😊
I'm hearing that from some contacts there now too. Anderson airport showing winds 14 sustained gusting to 23 around the time it happened. It had to be a small low profile boat for it to become swamped in those winds. I'm very curious about how big the boat was....
Totally bad situation....the way the weather was yesterday that tournament should have been canceled but it can happen to any of us at anytime may Our Lord Jesus Christ be with the family.
It was the Striped Bass Challenge striper tournament on Lake Hartwell. You can have up to four anglers per boat in the tournament. Did that clear things up?
I agree wholeheartedly with fishing. But why have a tournament in weather like that? Does it not put the fishing club at risk? I know there is inherent risk when you participate in them. I know that they probably have disclaimers stating that you are going at your own risk. They should call it off when there is weather like we have had. I grew up fishing and fished in cold weather. But I would not compete in those conditions. My life means more than that.
That is horrible. Thanks for bringing this to everyone.
Thanks Dieter for the coverage and the future update. Take care.

Ya, this story really makes me think and ponder things…..
That is a shame…..best wishes to the family. Thanks Dieter for letting us know…. I am in New Jersey, but catfish community is country wide.
Yes, the fishing community if small….you may not know the person, but you probably know someone that does.
I saw where Iowa had an ice fisherman die yesterday too. Think they said "Badger Lake?" not sure
That is terrible....I can't imagine falling through the ice....

Fishing is supposed to be a fun sport.
It will be enlightening to find out what actually happened.
My live well pump froze up one winter and busted, you wouldn’t believe the water I was taking on.
Yes sir…it’s amazing how much water can pour into a boat…
Hate no idea how many drownings/boating deaths there were until my relative became a Game Warden.

Yes, they were part of the tournament. Yes, very little information earlier today, but more has unfolded.

Hate hearing this. What a tragedy....going out to enjoy something recreational and end up with this situation.
Yes, it’s a fragile balance….

While a good idea on a larger boat, its really impractical on smaller boats....
i heard it was because of high winds

First off what kind of tournament allows 4 people in one boat, where they in a tournament, your catch bait headline read
" tournament angler killed"

I don’t think any of the clubs really worry about the liability. Once the people are on the water it’s of their own free will to be there.
