One suggestion. hang around bike shops and always bring the subject around that bicycles are practical tools, not just recreational toys. You might attract a few like minded people even though they'll be in the minority. Glad you're still spinning!

I can totally relate with what you are going through. Just working all the time and no time for yourself. Makes you unhappy with life when you can't get out and ride. Also, the riding club thing. I have debated joining but I feel the same as you, like my bike isn't good enough and I am not fast enough. I just don't think I will fit in. Stay true to yourself!

your vision of what is happening in the USA is very similar to what is described in the book by Jack London Martin Eden, the hard work of people. At the same time , I have friends who lived very well here in Russia and worked a little , but decided to go to Los Angeles and work there as food deliverers LOL

LA and NY are the worst places to try to start off in the US . Try medium sized cities in the midwest .

I relate here in the UK. I ride a bike called an "elephant bike". The royal mail got rid of all the postal workers bicycles a number of years ago in favour of small vans (don't even go there). A charity took on like 10000 of these bikes and refurbished them, teaching rehabilitating convicts skills along the way. For every one bike purchased, they'd send one to Malawi in Africa to help people in poor communities get around. It is my only transport and it looks a little "funky" and garners a lot of sniggers and laughs even from fellow stick-thin cyclists as they tear on past. But i don't give a crap. My bike is my transport. No other cyclist really wants to talk. Sometimes you get interested people but because i don't wear the skin tight lycra and don't
have an aerodynamic, carbon fibre bike, i am often seen as a joke. But whatever. It is a lonely road but i will get to where i want to get in the end. I've got my wife, my kids. Not much else i need. Keep going. Good Luck!

I’m thinking about getting the butterfly handlebars. It seems to suit my riding style a little more I don’t like bending over on my seat. What not I get the granny handle lash right now you know what I mean? Like the kind on the upright bikes like the old-fashioned ones I got that kind of handlebar.

I had a set of Jones bars on it when I first built it, now I have a Surly Moloko bars. I like a very upright riding position so I have a very good view of the road.

Well, you know there’s nothing wrong with homeless people. They’re good people hang out with them sometime and you might find a pretty good solid friend even though they may not have a cargo bike or whatever or hang out with a messenger is that something you know it’s like there’s a lot of good people out there that kind of riding the fringes like we are And it’s like you get a connect to the people who are kind or writing on the fringes that also might not fit in with the roadies roadies or those people all they care about is himself. They’re all about themselves, the rodies

I’ve worked in bike shops for lots of years, on and off, and been in and out of the cycling community . Oddly when you use your bike as transportation or for utilitarian purposes you somehow remove yourself from the cycling community . It’s an odd phenomenon I’ve noticed myself . I currently own a big dummy and big fat dummy and live in a beach town and they are used for transportation . They are objects of curiosity for non cyclists and not cool enough for the Sunday ride crowd . Keep doing what you are doing . Our country is definitely in decline . Get out on that bike and free your head a bit . Riding fixes everything . I’ve been riding by myself for years . I gave up on finding a fit .
