    you can get GMRS mobile radios too. 50w with a 10 year licence soon to be only $35. then you can use repeaters and talk anywhere in the US if you have internet or our local repeater covers 60 miles.

    THERE ARE SO MANY VIDEOS saying CB is junk. Hey, CB works for me. I swear its a conspiracy to push people to buy more expensive GMRS radios and those rugged radios. Especially when out on a group ride, CBs still work great. Who the hell wants to spend over $1k for a fancy radio?

    Nice review. I was thinking about upgrading to this CB. If I do I’ll use your link. I love CB. Grew up with it.
    I also have a Midland GMRS hardwired into my 4runner. Best part is with GMRS the handhelds are fairly inexpensive and very good radios. While camping as a family we use handhelds with the 4Runner as the base. Plus if we go out with friends who don’t have coms we toss them one.
    Best and awesome rig!

    I can tell you didn't check your work with an SWR meter because you shorted the hot side of your antenna to ground where you bolted that extra ground wire.
    Take the firering apart and look at what that bolt attaches to... The antenna and center conductor of the coax.
    Your going to have no performance with the antenna dead shorted like that and will probably end up damaging the radio.
    Good day

    • @RubiconUnlimited
      @RubiconUnlimited  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did test it and all is well. There is also an insulator bushing in the fire ring. Are you suggesting I move the ground wire?

    • @Oldcomputer
      @Oldcomputer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would check the SWR with no extra ground lead at all. If you get good readings then there is no need to add extra stuff. If you can't get the antenna system to tune THEN start playing with grounds.
      It's always good practice to test the the antenna with an ohm meter before transmitting in to it.
      On the antenna connector that goes to the radio test between the center pin and the metal shield. Should be infinite.
      Then check between the center pin and body ground. Should be infinite.
      Then check between the metal shield and car body. Should be zero ohms if the mount is grounded good. But like I said above if the SWR is good then don't go chasing problems that don't exist.
      For extra test if you can make the meter leads reach check between the center pin on the antenna connector at the radio and the antenna it self at the chrome base spring. Should be zero ohms.
      CB's will talk to each other when your feet apart on the road even with a shorted antenna but it aint good. Would hate to see you burn up such a nice radio.
      Be well

      The 2 ft. Firestick although good quality, you would do better with 36" to 46". Antenna and mount even with the Roofline. Behind a car/truck body attenuates your signal and increases SWR.

    • @RubiconUnlimited
      @RubiconUnlimited  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yessir! I plan to get a longer one now that my rooftop tent gets in the way

    • @tylerdean980
      @tylerdean980 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First, don't expect great range with an antenna that small, second, make sure your SWR is nice and low, the lower your SWR, the more power is actually exiting the antenna. If you still can't get one, try going to a high area around you like a mountain top or something. A nice clear line of sight will help you in making contacts. Or just drive on a busy highway with lots of truckers.
