    Death By A Thousand Cuts: Taylor explained that when she was younger reporters asked her if she would still be able to write if she ever found happiness and that that fear never left her so now that’s she’s so happy with Joe she was very proud she could still write a break up song and she got the inspiration for it form the movie “someone great” whose director said later she wrote while going through a rough moment and got inspiration for from 1989 xD so full circle moment

    A rented house/apartment on Cornelia Street was her special place with Joe at the start of their relationship I think, and I think she's saying that if she loses him she cant face going back to that street because she associates that place with him now, it has too much of their memories so it would be painful to revisit if their relationship ended.

  • @Musicpediapedia
    @Musicpediapedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    I actually think that I Forgot That You Existed is about Calvin Harris. It is funny because he was her longest relationship until Joe, then he publicly spoke shit about her on Twitter and she... Just proceeded to ignore him and didn’t write songs about him, and even not everyone agrees that this one is about him. That is probably the best way to shade someone in Taylor Swift’s world, because she used to have this image in the media of “girl who writes songs about everyone who broke her heart even if they dated for only a month”, and she just. Forgot that he existed.
    About Cruel Summer: it is widely rumored that Joe and Taylor started as friends with benefits. A lot of songs make sense once you put them in that context. That is why it was a cruel summer and an “unbreakable heaven with no rules”. I am going to copy-paste in the replies an analysis that I did of Taylor’s portrait of her relationship thorough her discography in the replies of this comment, in case you are interested.

    • @Luscent
      @Luscent  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Cool yeah thanks for the interpretation that's cool

    • @Musicpediapedia
      @Musicpediapedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Here is what I wrote in the comments of another video:
      Cruel Summer gets better once you pay attention to the lyrics and realize that it is friends with benefits to lovers anthem. "It's cool, that's what I tell 'em, no rules in breakable heaven", but then by the end of it she realizes that she can't keep denying how she feels "Said I'm fine, but it wasn't true, I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you", "I love you, ain't that the worst thing you've ever heard?".
      This is why I always tell people that you have to listen to her full discography to have the full picture, a lot of songs make sense once you put them in that context: "Gold cage, hostage to my feelings" (So It Goes, Reputation), "Do the girls back home touch you like I do?" (Delicate), "Back when we were card sharks, playing games, I thought you were leading me on" (Cornelia Street).
      I love Cowboy Like Me and Ready For It so much because they seem so similar to me and she compares herself to a thief or a con artist to make the same metaphor, two people who got quite a reputation of being players ("me and you, we've got big reputations", End Game), but somehow they used their usual tricks on each other ("I've got some tricks up my sleeve, takes one to know one, you're a cowboy like me", Cowboy Like Me and "Knew he was a killer first time that I saw him, wonder how many girls he had loved and left haunted" from Ready For It) and ended up falling for each other ("And the old men that I've swindled, really did believe I was the one. And the ladies lunching have their stories about when you passed through town, but that was all before I locked it down" from Cowboy Like Me).

    • @artsyswarley
      @artsyswarley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know Taylor has said that she never wrote anything about him, and most of the Swifties just take her at her word. But the thing is, Taylor loves to tell us white lies lol. And I don't blame her for doing it. As you mentioned she would have been chastised if she said any of them were about him. But you cannot tell me that she dated that man for that long and NONE are about him! I have theories about certain ones being about him (even some love songs) but I think you're right that IFTYE could def be one of them.

    • @Musicpediapedia
      @Musicpediapedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@artsyswarley I think that she definitely wrote about him but decided not to release anything. I mean, I love her but she IS petty lmao and I don’t blame her for it, I think it is funny. I don’t believe in the “lost album” theory between 1989 and rep, but I do think that she wrote some Calvin songs in that period. I just don’t think any of the ones released are about him other than IFTYE, I mean, sure, I see Calvin mentioned in Gorgeous, I Did Something Bad, Don’t Blame Me and Cowboy Like Me (as the “older guy” in most of those), but that’s about it. I think it is possible that she releases some Calvin songs in the rep vault songs, though. That would be interesting.

    • @Starbuck-dr7yl
      @Starbuck-dr7yl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Some people do think iftye is about Kanye but I don’t, I 100% think it’s about Calvin. The lyrics make more sense if it’s about Calvin. Someone did mention Cowboy Like Me is about Calvin and I have to disagree big time on that one. Either way, in the end Calvin didn’t deserve much he’s usually just referenced as a bystander in those other songs but here I think it’s the only song she’ll give him.

    I absolutely sob to soon you’ll get better it means so much to me even if I can’t really listen to it. I lost my mom to cancer when I was 11 and that song just cuts so deep to me because even though I was 11 and I’m 20 now Taylor was able to put my thoughts and feelings into words. It’s just a beautiful song. My mom was like my best friend so the line “who am I supposed to talk to” just ugh it’s me so hard.

    My favorite is definitely Daylight. It is imo the best closer she has and such a beautiful full circle moment. It’s almost like we can actually hear her finally exhale after going through so much heartbreak and being ostracized and judged by everyone, and taking all of it to heart, making so many mistakes that she acknowledges in the song, she’s finally found happiness with herself and with her lover. It’s actually incredibly relatable in that sense too.

    Cornelia Street is in New York, while her home/apartment was being remodeled and renovated she rented a place temporarily on Cornelia St. and it’s a place her and Joe shared and she saying if things end with Joe it’d be too painful to ever walk that street again.
    Death by A Thousand cuts Taylor said is actually not about her life, she wondered if she could still write sad songs while being in love, the inspiration was actually a movie she watched and got the idea from there.

    This was a much needed appreciation video for the masterful craft of Lover. This album is so under appreciated bc of the simplicity of its lead single. But as you pointed out, there’s so much more to it that highlights the highs AND lows of a real long lasting relationship, and about all kinds of love. I adore this album so much. Miss americana in my opinion (after reading other people opinions and thinking about it by myself) have 3 meanings:
    1. The most obvious high school metaphor, girl with a bad reputation, whole school have bad opinion about her.
    2. Taylor reputation era drama
    “They whisper in the hallway, "she's a bad, bad girl"” → she was that “bad girl” before full recording leak.
    “I counted days, I counted miles, To see you there, To see you there, It's been a long time coming but, It's you and me, That's my whole world” → How Joe help her with all of that.
    3. Politic → I think this is main interpratation.
    “You know I adore you
    I'm crazier for you
    Then I was at sixteen
    Lost in a film scene
    Waving homecoming queens
    Marching band playing
    I'm lost in the lights” → that it about how she love her country
    “American glory
    Faded before me
    Now I'm feeling hopeless
    Ripped up my prom dress” → about crisis in politic, Trump etc
    “We're so sad, we paint the town blue” → democratic party
    “My team is losing
    Battered and bruising
    I see the high fives
    Between the bad guys” → about election in 2016
    And later about how she want run away from this and just be with Joe, but she now it is important to fight and some day they gonna win.
    Sorry for my english, but hopefully everything is clear!

    • @Luscent

    I always really related to The Archer cause me and Taylor share a birthday and I thought it was about being a Sagittarius in the zodiac which is sometimes called the archer. The stereotype is that they are quite flighty and don’t tend to commit to people (“help me hold on to you”) and that they’re argumentative and blunt (“combat, I’m ready for combat. I say I don’t want that, but what if I do?”)

    Loved this! I was hoping you would pick up on one of our fave references in Daylight but its okay haha. I'll explain!
    Near the end of the song she says "I once believed love would be burning red, but its golden like daylight" its a huge full circle moment. In the prologue for the RED album Taylor talks about how she thinks all passionate love to her at that point in her life could be represented by the colour red, hence why she named the album that. Here are two excerpts from the prologue: "And in my mind, every one of these memories looks the same to me. I see all of these moments in bright, burning, red." "And there’s something to be proud of about moving on and realizing that real love shines golden like starlight, and doesn’t fade or spontaneously combust. Maybe I’ll write a whole album about that kind of love if I ever find it." Basically Lover IS that album! She has finally grown and realized real love doesn't have to be red, it should be golden, like her love for Joe.

    Lover is a very special album for me because it was the very first full album I listened to of hers. Before that I had just heard radio singles and I liked them but just never went deeper until she did ME!. Panic! is my favorite band and I went in head first fearless and haven’t been the same since. Funny story about this album is that I was at my local TJMAXX (TK MAXX) when I first listened to it. Ohhh I went through all the emotions just walking down the rows. Imagine my hysterical sobs in public while listening to Soon You'll Get Better (side note my mom had just finished treatment for breast cancer the October prior, so the song hit home). Anyway it's all I listened to for the rest of the year and begged my sister to listen to it. Months go by and I'm at work when I get a phone call from my sister. I immediately answer bc it's out of character for her. My sister tells me she's pulled over on the side of the road bc Lover came on the radio and she had full body chills, and is crying her eyes out. She immediately regretted not listening to the album when I told her, and that Lover is the most romantic song she's ever heard. You reaction made have to share that story. Thank you for what you do 😊

    hi sorry im watching it now and making comments as i go along loll
    -leoinardo decaripo is always in satrapy with new models so she just saying that why is that so accepted and me being in love not?
    - miss americana and the heartbreak prince she explained it in an interview and said it was all about politics, its set in this metaphorical high school and her journey of being political but still loving joe throughout her ups and downs in her career
    - its says "my my my" at the start of death by thousand cuts because she cant say my love any more also can we just appreciate the line "paper thin sting ]s from our paper thin plans"
    - im in love with false god also it reminds me of hot summer nights (if we ever get one in Britain) thats all i have to add i was really looking forward to reaction all day in school only thing that got me through my chemistry exam so glad you like the album xx

    My favs are well, cruel summer of course, but Cornelia St and DBaTC. Guilty pleasure is I think He Knows.... what a bop. Underrated.... False God, a masterpiece. The live version on SNL is so good. Daylight is a closer, not the best closer, but it’s a good one. For me the “role” of the closer needs to wrap up the entire album, it doesn’t need to be the best song, it need to represent the album the best (Luke the opener serves a purpose too). I think Daylight does that well. It’s role as a close is a pretty good one, I’d rank it #4 as a closer. Iftye is not a good opener. As an opener and what role that possesses, it may be #9.
    Overall, lover has some of my favorite in her catalog, but some songs that just aren’t very strong, the rest are in the middle for me. Strange because so many songs are high on my list, but The album ranks low on my list overall because of the low points. Still, it’s a better album than most artists can make, the bar is just so high with Taylor albums.

    • @Luscent
      @Luscent  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree with a lot of that! I'll have to do my proper ranking at some point but some of her albums are just so consistently good throughout I think Lover will be middle of the pack despite Cruel Summer and False God quickly becoming two of my absolute faves

    • @Starbuck-dr7yl
      @Starbuck-dr7yl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Luscent what are your favorite closers and openers? I think the best opener is Ready for It, it is the best opener for any occasion. The best closer for me is actually New Years Day. It is the perfect closer for the story of Reputation, which is telling the story of her meeting Joy and beginning to date Joe at the worst time in her life. At the end, she has fallen in love. The end of the story is... she fell in love and that is New Years Day. The perfect closer to the album. It sums up the entire story and if you didn't know what was going to happen, she wants to pick up bottles with him on New Years Day, she fell in love. Its a perfect closer to a hard album, its soft and lets the listener know that attitude is gone, she was on the attack, then at the end with NYD it is soft, its lovely and a perfect transition at the end of REP falling in love , to then being in love with Lover album. Its the best closer.
