Mary’s Song was my first beloved Taylor Swift song and it’s written about a couple that lived near her growing up. It’s so sweet!
Mary's Song was written about the neighbor couple in their late 80's who had met as children, married young and stay together; they did some babysitting for Taylor and her brother when the family arrived in Nashville.
She actually wrote The Outside when she was 12, not about relationships but how she felt so lonely and being an outcast in middle school

Marys song is about an older couple that Lived beside Taylor and told her a story about her and her husband then she wrote that song about it
Our Song was written for her high school talent show. She captures a feeling and nostalgis so well. She's magic :)

She wrote The Outside as one of her first songs, around 12 or so. She had just made the transition from a Christian private elementary school to a public middle school. The album spans her songwriting from 12 to 16. Also , regarding her age: she is a December kid; she was 15 when she wrote Tim McGraw (1st single) and 16 when she wrote "Our Song." Her Fearless album picks up with the period 16 - 18 (she turned 19 after it dropped). fwiw, her debut reached 7 times platinum (in the US) in 2018 or so, so the sales of the re-record ought to be pretty good.
The reason so many country songs mention pickup trucks is because people in rural America have them. In many parts of the world they're industrial tools driven only for work. But in the places country music lives they're passenger vehicles, commuter cars, grocery getters. And for many rural kids, their first vehicle to drive themselves to school. Think of any song you've ever heard in any other genre where someone mentions a car, because that's what they get around in. If that songwriter had been from somewhere else, it might have been a pickup instead.
This album is the reason I'm a fan! I heard Our Song when my cousin showed it to me, the month this album was released and loved her ever since. So yeah it shaped my preteen/teenage years

A lot of country lyrics talk about trucks because a lot of people in rural areas drive trucks. There are rough roads, some people farm, haul equipment, put their deer in the truck bed after hunting. And in a small town you don’t go to clubs, you drive around back roads in your friend’s truck or walk through the woods or fish or barbecue, etc… its a very common pass-time to drive the truck around and that’s why country songs mention it. It isn’t random.

You talk about the music industry aiming Taylor at an audience -- actually, RCA had her on contract, and wouldn't let her record her own music; she left RCA at 15yo and signed with Big Machine. Big Machine tried several "experienced" producers, who all tried to force her sound into "country" and she hated working with them. Taylor's sound isn't a single genre; she's pretty eclectic.
The album producer was a session musician (Nathan Chapman) who had never recorded an album before; she had to fight the label to get permission to let him produce and mix her songs. He was the first person she turned into a producer; the second was Jack Antonoff. And, she doesn't get enough credit herself. She co-produced all her albums after the debut; so if an effect seems reflective of an earlier work, it is all her doing.
This is about her first boyfriend and she continues to write songs about him thruout her albums. Like Midnight Rain and Suburban Legends. Her first boyfriend was a popular senior when she was a freshman. I know his name but I probably shouldn't write it. But you can probably google it.
