I think a great cliffhanger for this seasons’ finale would be a jump forward in time. You see Fudge walking through the cells of Azkaban, where we see a bunch of deranged looking wizards, including one with long hair and a scraggly beard. As Fudge walks past his cell Black calls out ‘Cornelius!’ Fudge turns around in horror. ‘Can I borrow the paper?’ Fudge looks almost relieved but still a little frightened of Black, he hands Black the paper through the bars and then walks of. We see Black open the paper where there is the image of the Weasley’s in Egypt. We see Black’s look of boredom turn to one of fury and revenge. He scrunches up the paper looks at the camera and says ‘he’s now at Hogwarts’. And boom. Credits roll. This gives nothing away and next season when Black breaks out, the audience is already somewhat familiar with him.

The only problem I see with this is that him seeing a picture of Ron's family would make absolutely no sense if he (as we are told to begin with) wants to kill Harry. Since this point is what drives the plottwist at the end, making him seemingly want to kill Ron might make some people confused, or make his twist too predictable or obvious.
It might also have the positive effect of creating mystery inside mystery, resulting in even more excitement.
      I don't know🤷‍♂

At the end of the season, maybe when Tom Riddle is monologing to Harry, you can show flashbacks from Ginny's perspective.
Show us how Tom Riddle manipulated her, how she realised the diary was evil. Here you chould foreshadow how horcroxes effect people.

13:25 A good way to make suspense in the show is to add a cut scene after the first few Hogwarts episodes showing a robed person killing the roosters or sneaking towards the roost and have a something showing like hair or shoes to get new fans to get engaged into a new mystery adding a good subplot for the new viewers to try to guess on who it could be. They can add stuff to point towards Hermione or other people and then in the Riddle monologue episode they can show flash backs to Ginny doing the things in those end cut scenes

    • @jessicastrike5640

I love this idea! Maybe just shoes though, and the robes, red hair would be too obvious haha. Also they could show spiders fleeing the castle after the chamber is opened, point it out once with the characters but after that just let the camera show it and the audience can put it together themselves that is is part of the mystery

I really hope each season has a post credit scene like the MCU to set up the next season. It would be so much fun to see what they tease especially as most people already know the story so they could do scenes we didn’t see previously but heard about or read in the books
    1. We hear Lucius Malloy (but don’t see him so doesn’t spoil the mystery/reveal) being told about raids being conducted by Arthur Weasley and we see the diary in the basement
    2. A reveal of Sirius Black in his cell in Azkaban muttering continuously “he’s at Hogwarts” or Fudge doing his inspection and Sirius asks him for his newspaper
    3. Pettigrew in Albania, maybe in the woods looking for Voldemort hearing whispers or at a bar when he overhears Bertha Jorkins talking about the Quidditch World Cup
    4. A reveal of Umbridge at the Ministry with others talking about how something needs to be done about Harry and Dumbledore spreading lies about Voldemort
    5. Harry arrives back in Privet Drive and finds a letter from Dumbledore saying he will collect him in a couple of weeks and that he has something he wants his help with or Harry looking at newspapers seeing Fudge has resigned and other news like the Amelia Bones murder
    6. There’s loads of things you could do here but I would have Scrimgeour at his desk with Dumbledore’s will as he looks at the items he leaves to Harry Ron and Hermionie, he could flick through the book and we see a glimpse of the Deathly Hallows symbol, holds the snitch then drops it, he clicks the deluminator and the lights go out ending the scene
If they split Deathly Hallows up again (pointless for a series but they could) then I would have the tease be the Dumbledore’s Army coins being activated with the message to return to Hogwarts

Something they also need to do to differentiate the show from the movies is make the magic more magical and whimsy like it is in the books. In the films it kinda just devolves into laser beams flying this way and that. In the films there’s barely any talking or belching furniture, there are never sparks emitting from the wands, nothing pops, bangs or cracks, and the duels are mostly just two guys shooting a connected beam of light at each other. They also rarely say the spells aloud and they use Avada Kedavra way too much. They’ve got to get this right.

    • @BrettsThoughts
      @BrettsThoughts  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

Yes - enchanted set pieces and a whimsical world around them sounds fantastic. Particularly for the earlier seasons.

Strongly disagree on the Avada Kedavra point. It’s simply a consequence of the way the story is written. There’s just no good reason anyone who’s looking to kill would ever use anything but the killing curse

@@HugoGojibiter The books state on multiple occasions that only really powerful wizards can use Avada Kedavra, or any of the other unforgivable curses, for that matter. For example, Bellatrix kills Sirius with some red spell that makes him fall through the Veil. She doesn’t use the killing curse, because it either takes too much focus or power, which she needs to save for the duel. That’s how I’ve always interpreted the killing curse in the books. It’s a massively powerful spell that can’t be used a lot. It’s also super dangerous, because it can’t be blocked. Yet they constantly block it in the films.

    Here's my breakdown:
    - Ep 1 (Introduction + Inciting Incident) -- The Worst Birthday; Dobby's Warning -- End with Dobby warning Harry not to go back to Hogwarts
    - Ep 2 (End of Act 1) -- The Burrow; At Floursh and Blotts; The Whomping Willow -- End with Ron and Harry crashing into the Whomping Willow
    - Ep 3 (Raising Action) -- Gilderoy Lockhart; Mudbloods and Murmurs
    - Ep 4 (Raising Action + Complication) -- The Deathday Party; The Writing on the Wall -- The midpoint at Hallowe'en.
    - Ep 5 (Raising Action) -- The Rogue Bludger; The Dueling Club
    - Ep 6 (Raising Action) -- The Polyjuice Potion; The Very Secret Diary -- End at the revelation that Hagrid opened the chamber of secrets before
    - Ep 7 (Raising Action + Climax) -- Cornelius Fudge; Aragog; The Chamber of Secrets -- End with Ginny being taken into the chamber
    - Ep 8 (Denoumont) -- The Heir of Slytherin; Dobby' Reward
Note: This is a rough breakdown. Like with my breakdown of Book 1, the idea is to keep the main story beats (3/5 act story structure) aligned with the episodes, while giving the key episodes a cliffhanger/hook for the next episode. This is also the same sort of structure I would keep throughout the series.
In terms of adapting the text, there's plenty there to pick up on. You don't just have to turn a paragraph of text into a single look or establishing shot. You can take what the paragraph is telling the reader and showing that.
Show how Ginny interacts with Harry at the Burrow, maybe throw in a few additional scenes of awkward interactions. Have Harry, Ron, and Hermione have additional conversations about Harry being accused of being the heir of Slytherin; show how he reacts inthe various classes, etc.
Show Harry overhearing conversations at Burgin and Burkes while trying to stay hidden/escape, possibly with death eaters or other characters. Show Ginny and Harry talking to the diary -- you could use that to provide insight into their thoughts while making diary Tom Riddle both sympathetic and manipulative; done right that can hint at what Tom is actually like (for the reveal for people who don't know the story) without making it obvious.
There's plenty you can do to bring the text to life and to show what is narrated in the story. That does mean writing additional scenes and not just lifting the text one-to-one, but this is a different story-telling medium.

The Handmaids Tale was one book that generated 5 (6 in 2025) seasons that averaged 12 hour long episodes per season. You lot are thinking to linear storytelling. This will NOT be another retread. We will care more about the entire cast than before.

I still think they not only can but will have to just stack up backstory in the first two books.
They won’t really have time in later seasons to focus on the eccentricities of things like the Burrow and Diagon Alley. In DH they will have to just do stuff Bill and Fleur’s wedding and Gringotts without wasting time on character and scene building.
This season would also be a good opportunity to go ahead and dig into stuff like Hagrid’s backstory, and maybe even introducing some Voldy backstory.

A great way for the TV show to develop and differentiate itself more from the movies, would be to flesh out things that are not strictly in the books/written out on a page but things that we KNOW happen in the timeframe of a specific book, just little stories and bits that maybe are written out on in an article on what has formerly been pottermore n stuff. Giving the world we have in the books more space to breathe and exist outside of Harrys narrative and give maybe some cool moments to other important characters.

Same as season/book 1 I wrote this on your overall seasons video before this one, but again I like how much we were on the same page generally. I think the key thing to remember is that the Harry Potter books are mysteries, yes they’re in a magical world but it’s still a mystery story at the core so having petrified victims in episodes 3-6 (Norris, Colin, Justin/Nick, Hermionie) and 7 ending with Ginny’s message of being taken into the chamber is a great way to pace it out. At the start of episode 3 maybe Hermionie could mention to a first year like Colin there’s so much history to the castle and talk about the Forrest, the lake etc and mention the chamber then as part of a list but it’s just a myth according to Hogwarts a history, then the episode ends with the chamber being opened
Chamber of secrets roughly plotted out
    1. Harry’s birthday, Dobby, Ron and the twins rescue Harry, end with arriving at the Burrow
    2. Burrow, Knockturn/Diagon Alley, flying the car to Hogwarts, Whomping Willow
    3. Lockhart class (Pixies), Quidditch/slugs, detention with Lockhart
    4. Deathday party, Mrs Norris petrified, Quidditch/Dobby/Colin petrified
    5. Duelling Club, Justin/Nick petrified, Polyjuice Potion, Harry finds the diary
    6. Diary flashback, losing the diary, Hermionie petrified
    7. Hagrid’s arrest/Dumbledore suspended, meeting with Aragog, Ginny is taken into the Chamber
    8. Lockhart’s memory charm, Riddle in the Chamber, Basilisk fight, destroy the diary, free Dobby
I think 8 episodes of roughly 30-40 minutes each gives 4-5 hours which is plenty for Chamber

Has there been any confirmation on being a hard 8 episodes? HBO and other tv studios have in the past had shorter seasons in some tv shows. I wouldn't be surprised if PS and CS are somewhat shorterned episode counts in the early season. Unless there's filler episodes that create backstory on characters it is just hard to see how they can take the early books and have them in 8 or more episodes. Especially if these episodes are nearly an hour in length.
I think the finales of the first few seasons definitley need to have a setup for the next book, like maybe at the end of PS season you see a tease with the chamber of secret slowly opening for an example, and maybe the end of book 3 you see the village where the Riddles were from
I am definitley looking forward to books 4, 5 and 6. Tons of content was cut in the movies so those have plenty of book materials to finally get live action justice.

For these first few seasons the general population will actually understand shorter seasons if they're good (still doubting why they adapted it). Some of the best shows have three to four HOUR seasons so don't give them ideas for drawing out the story. All we need is a few shorter seasons to get to the good stuff.

The tv series needs to add one crucial scene that the movie left out!
    Valentines Day!
It will be so much fun, visually, but of more importance it is how Ginny discovers that Harry now has the diary!
The scene, like the one in the book, has to have all the "suspects" nearby to witness Harry's bag breaking and all the books falling out, including the diary.
I would also enjoy the idea of Percy as a suspect. This was neglected in the movie but all his secretive meetings with his girlfriend could lead the trio to wonder what he was up to.
They also need to include the scene of Ginny coming to confess everything to Ron and Harry, but being overheard by Percy who interrupts her, thinking she is going to tell about his girlfriend.

Also Brett I could see you breaking this up into 2 videos per. You kinda did this before but comparing the show to the movie on what will be done different or what you want to be done better. If not a 2nd video maybe just more of a deeper dive. For example they did this in the show and I think they nailed it no changes necessary but how will they do it different to be as good or better, same as "o they didnt do this scene well in the movie" and they can make it better by xyz. You kinda do this when describing scenes but you could really describe it by film descriptions such as b roll, zoom ins, setting up the scene etc. Also, takes on casting and directing. Do we like the casting of the characters in the movie? no? how can we do it better? or if it was a good casting but maybe not great directions, ooooorrrr flawless movie characters.. how do we give that justice. I know we cant compare this to the movie as it should be its on entity but thats impossible to do ya know.

I would like to see them bring in new plots to the earlier books especially, maybe even things that foreshadow future plots in the later seasons. I don’t think it should be a chapter by chapter retelling. They need to build each episode as their own, rather than telling the full story as one but splitting it up into episodes. I actually think the earlier seasons will be 6 episodes long, rather than 8. But we’ll see!

I hope a TV series can fix a few of the problems the books had, such as not having any *good* Slytherin characters. Just having a few minor characters in the other houses who get fleshed out more would help balance things, but Slytherin is the only house that really didn't get any proper rep until the end, and that was only one professor.

One main issue with doing a TV series of Harry Potter is Harry is probably going to end up being the only character to appear in every episode. In fact if you look at all of the book and imagine break them down into episodes Ron and Hermione are more than likely doing to be absent from episode 1 from every season and even some other episodes as well considering they don’t have a lot to do in Goblet of Fire and Half-Blood Prince.

I think you might be looking at the series wrong and from a perspective of the books are great so they just have to follow along the story from each book but how many shows have ever done this especially in the last decade? Not really any of them, game of thrones maybe until they ran out of books 🤔 What im trying to say is they are obviously going to be adding a lot of things not in the books regardless if it’s books 1-3 or the bigger books there after. I’m pretty sure the “Last of Us” show runner is apart of or doing HP as well where they took 2 small characters who were a small part from there and gave them an entire episode just of them (granted it was an amazing episode) but obviously there will be a lot of new things that will be added but let’s just hope it’s good story, plot or character developing being added is all we can hope for as well as staying true to the books.

I'll die on this hill: a TV series should be anime! And they can also make the l seasons as long or short as needed!
And to your point about thoughts - think Death Note! They could do internal dialouge similar to that!
And they can make them half hour episodes.... or 50 minute episodes if they really wanted.
Anime is the way to go! And it'll make it different than live action movies, get a variety of talent to join, and make it easier to "recast" if needed.
Besdies that, I do love your plot and episode ideas!

They are quite obviously going to have to write completely new scenes and plots for every season as none of the books are long enough to become a TV show and that even goes for order of the Phoenix. The issue we saw with the movies was too many people in the kitchen making decisions that would make the movies more accessible and digestible for the kid audience which is why we saw the complete degradation of the series with the OotP movie and how it became a Disney production version of Harry Potter. As the movies got deeper they were so scared by the younger audience they refused to allow the series to go deeper, darker and longer because OotP could of easily been a 3 hour movie which would also show how serious the series is getting

I try braking it book 2 into epsides before watching this. Only difference i also try brake each epsideo into 4 act structure. I got very simpler episodes. I think this book has far better min stories for each epside compared to first. First season you have to just tie to plot points togather to filled out episode even if they don't make a fully story for each episoded. Hopfuly the writes are allowed to have the story dicted the lenght of the episode rather the lenght of epsides dictate story.
Only other feature i would add was to have a cold open for each episode. These scenes are the only not harry lead scense. For season 2 i would have each cold open flashback to founders and there charter development while foreshadowing what conflicts are coming in this episode.
For season 3 i would have cold open flash back to marauders and them becoming friends. Have them just using nicknames to keep plot twist for new views. Have actors being just 13 so when they return in later flash backs(book 5) you can use same actors just age

The simplest solution to the simplicity of the plot is to draw on those moments that are reflective, let the emotional beats be given more weight. When the book describes something in length it should be given more than a few seconds of time.
World building is the most impactful aspect of this franchise.
For example the main subplot I want to see expanded upon more is seeing Harry exploring the possibility he was put into the wrong house, and giving the sense that it really could be Harry that is the heir of Slytherin.
Really have the tension rise so it makes it even more of a relief for the twins to make light of the entire situation.
Though potentially it could be even more interesting for the mystery to be revealed to the audience before the characters discover it, seeing how the diary slowly corrupted Ginny though also it could explain the reason why the Basilisk never actually kills is that Ginny is fighting being made to do all things so we see the beginnings of her fiery nature.
There’s also opportunity to more strongly suggest the diary as a horcrux rather than being more of a retrospective “oh yeah, the diary was this thing too” later on in the series. Not suggesting a full reveal, the expanding narrative should exist but feel more natural.
As I mentioned with Philosophers Stone, the world should feel fully established from the get go, new things can be introduced though we should see those things already existing, they are simply “introduced” to Harry as his understanding of the Wizarding World grows.

To be fair I think that both book and movie already did a pretty good job with the diary. When Dumbledore sees it he holds it up and just ponders it for a moment as some sort of realization begins to sink in. Like it's a more subtle and quiet moment sure but is that necessarily a bad thing?

    • @Jägarn-swe
      @Jägarn-swe 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@ObsessiveGeek Might be so but I feel that The Chamber of Secrets is underrated and sometimes receives unnecessary hate. Could be biased from my side but I remember that after watching the first movie at the age of maybe 6? I was left feeling “where’s the magic?” not from the world itself but more from the main characters (golden trio). Later when I read the books I had the same feelings. The Chamber of Secrets then comes and we see duels and more spellcasting which for me fixed the feeling. Chamber of Secrets also has a more intriguing danger from my point of view, a huge snake that are a danger to others inside the castle, not just for the golden trio. McGonagall shows fear for the situation and the professors are talking about closing the school. This sets the bar for the basilisk and Voldemort and makes it a fascinating foe. 1st movie never gave the danger feeling as the golden trio were the ones poking around about the stone but the rest of the school went on like nothing. From the SuperCarlinBrothers “Dumbledor’s grand plan” they theorize that the obstacles in first movie Fluffy, Devil’s snare (movie)/potion riddle (book), catching the key and chess match was never anything dangerous as it was only a test for the golden trio. Catching key for Harry’s excellent broom work, devil’s snare/potion riddle for Hermione’s knowledge and the chess game for Ron’s talent. Final fight with Prof. Quirrel/Voldemort never gave a danger feeling either as Harry only had to touch him (even though it’s a very important information for later about Voldemort’s problem with Harry). But The Chamber of Secrets has students being petrified, Harry has to fight the basilisk and almost dies from the venom until Fawkes rescues him, which is to my previous point about danger. The Chamber of Secrets also sets the tone with the Weasley family, Lucius Malfoy, Dobby, let’s us get some background information about a founder (Salazar Slytherin, especially in the book by Prof. Binns), etc. For me it’s a great movie/book and can be very well done but they need to master the pacing of that season and maybe have lesser episodes and really shine the light on the key moments. Sorry for the long text and English is not my first language but I hope I got the point across.

    • @ObsessiveGeek
      @ObsessiveGeek 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Jägarn-swe I don’t hate on CoS, it has a lot going for it - just overall in comparison to the rest of the series I found it the weakest. My entry into Harry Potter was around the time the Philosophers Stone movie came out, however I initially considered it as “nonsense” and had no interest in it until a work colleague started talking about the books she was listening to (at this point they were audio cassettes) so I gave the audio version of Philosophers Stone a listen and I got hooked.
Eventually I bought all the novels that were available which was the first four even though I had listened to them all, I read through the novels too.
I have since then got all the novels and seen all the movies and have the digital versions of the audiobooks too. I’ve also been to the stage production of The Cursed Child, visited the WB Studio Tour in London and been on the Jacobite steam train in Scotland that goes across the Glenfinnan Viaduct (seen most notably in Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron are on the flying car trying to get to Hogwarts) as well as visiting other places that were the inspiration for various elements of the series.
I also had a profile on Pottermore (now known as Wizarding World) when it first launched, the website now isn’t nearly as fun as it was then. I used to also be fairly active on a fan website called The Leaky Cauldron (still going strong) and even have a replica of Harry’s wand so I don’t say this lightly when I say I’m a fan.
So please don’t take it badly that I say CoS is the weakest, the entire series is amazing and are rightly one of the most well known and loved throughout the world. So even the weakest part is far better than many other stories that try to copy Harry Potter. I can understand your attraction to that one as it was your entryway into the world.
I highly recommend you give the audiobooks a listen, for me that’s still the best way to experience the story. (UK version if possible)

    • @Jägarn-swe
      @Jägarn-swe 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@ObsessiveGeek No worries, I’m not taking it badly, I’m just trying to explain why it’s 2nd place for me personally. I’ve watched the movies, read the books in Swedish, listened to the audiobooks read by Stephen Fry (don’t know if I spell his name correctly), traveled to WB studios, created Pottermore account (now Wizarding World, I miss the potions class you could do in Pottermore), etc. so I’m up to speed.
For me I take everything into consideration, for example I find the Goblet of Fire book great with all the details but the movie really bad, so it ends up mid for me. CoS is a great movie and book in my opinion and there for I place it on a higher rank than other in the series. In the end it’s personal taste which was suggested in my original post.

And then thirdly, what i would really want for the series is consistency.
