Nice review. I have a polish woodland swagman roll. I think it’s good to pair with their poncho and keep it in the truck/car as an anytime option for car camping, day hike, etc. I agree that fir longer hikes, something warmer and lighter like a down sleeping bag is more suited.

The shock cord you need is built into the ends of the swagman. Press the cord lock and pull the shock cord loops out to cinch up the "ends" of it. A simple loop of paracord connected to your straps with a larks head gives you a button knot that you can loop the shock cord through with yet another larks head. This also gives you the seal you need on either end. This also makes it easy to disconnect quickly and use as a blanket/hoodie/whatever. If you're crafty you can also run your hammock through the ends and zip it up while you're in the hammock for a sleeping pod. It is a tight fit though and it would not be easy to get a proper diagonal lay. This is an incredibly versatile piece of gear. Perhaps paired up with something like the 2go systems Trifecta and you'd have a sleep system that would get you into some pretty decent temps and be around 2lbs. I also don't bother with the stuff sack. I just cram it into my pack and let it fill up all the empty voids in the pack. Forcing yourself to make it fit in the shape of the stuff sack is definitely a struggle. The Swagman Roll (non basic) also has a chest pocket and you can roll it up into itself for storage and ditch the stuff sack.
Here's a few pics of what I am talking about (sorry it's difficult to see the paracord loops, but they are on either end of my hammock: imgur.com/a/c2M6kSy

Hmm...ok...I will have to revisit that and check out the shock cord. I do have the Trifecta as well...that would make a nice little combo setup. Thanks for the comments...get me thinking.

@@outerlimitless Since I saw you have the 2gosystems poncho I was wondering if you could report back on how the swagman fits with that as a liner? I was considering their v3 poncho instead of the Helikon-Tex poncho (which is pretty much sold out everywhere) since it has a reflective liner and could be used as a bivy bag as well. I have a thing for multi-functional gear :)

Use mine as under quilt all the time. If you had cinched the ends down fully closed there is enough shock cord to attach it properly without putting strain on anything.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I didn't realize that at the time...I will definitely keep experimenting with mine. I want to get it back out there again for some overnight action.

Seeing that it doubles ass a quilt/ sleeping bag I just loosely threw mine in the top of my bag easily accessible because it's also my poncho liner

I take a picnic blanket as a well picnic blanket but also a ground sheet under my sleep system but l could see this as a substitute but also something to wear on cold nights around the camp fire.

Great review! Helped a lot when I'm considering purchasing one (but the other version with pocket and lighter weight). I'd use it as camp insulation and overbag (blanket mode). I think it'll do good in the winter to shield the down gear.
Felt your style is more similar to mine, most of the reviewers are bug out/survival style camping people, not thin backpackers who also hike around.

    • @outerlimitless

I'm definitely more hiking/backpacking... this is a touch bulky but definitely multi-role use and can be adapted to backpacking.

Why didn't you use the poncho's shock cord to attach it in the under quilt configuration?

  • @ctrip34

What if you were to run the Pchord that you have anchored to the trees thru the bungee cinch chord part on the outside of the tightened. I think I saw an excess loop portion. I had a hard time seein how you had it set up.

Would you take the basic version or the Classic? Is the surcharge justified?

The basic is 2.2 pounds and is not as water resistant.
The more expensive one is 1.64 pounds and more water resistant.

If i got two of the swagman roll can i then take them and lay them both out flat on each other and clip them together with the clips and get a double blanket so to say?

You could probably do that. I'd need to check the clip layout...I also wonder how secure they would be. Hard to say without trying it.
