As much as there is to love about the Guard, I have to say the thing I love the most is the community this faction gets. Not many factions have as much comraderie and content creators as IG does.

The custodes feel like they need to be trying to win, or else they're going to be wiped off the board, especially now that their durability has disappeared outside of their raw datasheets
I, their biggest advocate, cannot go any discussion on starting a Guard army without singing the praises of Wargames Atlantic. If you want 3rd party Guard minis, accept no substitute. Cheap, hard plastic, high model-per-box ratio, and with generally most of the special weapons you could want. (Though this depends greatly on which kit you buy). And they cover all the defunct Guard regiments GW only sells rarely, at a huge markup. If you're starting a Guard army, I highly recommend their 3 or even 5 box deals, as they grant graduating discounts (not to mention free shipping). With their "The Damned" line coming after a successful crowdfunding campaign, the unit options are about to expand dramatically. They're even modifying their original designs for a troop transport, to bring it more in line with the GW Chimera. So you can soon buy, not only the troops, but the vehicle to drive them in.
I’ve put in some money for their Damned army that should be coming out soon for a chaos guard themed army. Their stuff is super cheap compared to GW and it still looks great.
There is one really cool thing about the current leman russ kit, you get two turrets per kit, so you don't have to stress about which main gun to choose as hard
@@DaGoookI get annoyed that the different vehicles either do or do not come with a hunter killer. And even if they do, they're different types of missiles for different vehicles. I get an accessory sprue with each tank so all my stubbers and HKMs match. I also put the track armor on every tank too. I like the chunky look.
For official GW minis, I'd recommend 30k's Solar Auxilia for Infantry Squads; 20 bodies for $75 is the best price per points as far as infantry goes. Leman Russ tanks are next, as you get a solid vehicle for both its price and points. One or two can be converted to Tank Commanders for easy characters to lead your primary damage dealers! Ironically, the nerfs to artillery make getting Basilisks and Manticores great value to fill an army's points total. I'd recommend one unit per 1000 points to not overly irritate your local playerbase. For infantry characters, I'd start with Ursala Creed and a Platoon Command Squad. This gets 3-4 orders where you'd want/need them. For newer players, I do NOT recommend Sentinels, as they are very expensive for how many points they're worth; you need 3 kits to maximize a single squadron!
To anyone curious about using auxilia as guardsmen, you’ll need to go in with the intent to convert. The heresy weapon upgrade sprue fits them well, but it will require some cutting to get them to fit. It’s not the worst thing ever, but it’s the best option to get some plasma and melta. It’s a ton of fun, but not for everyone. As for other units, the heavy sentinel is the same height as the 40k one, if a bit chunkier. but you’ll need to buy a smaller base. It fits the base well. Carnadons and auroxes are basically the same size as a rhino, so comparable to a chimera. They could be fun chimera and hellhound stand ins. The basilisk uses the leman russ chassis, but it’s not much bigger than the chimera basilisk. Ogryns are huge and require smaller bases, but they fit them well. Not so bad. Rapiers can fit into the base size of heavy weapons teams if you’d like to use them for that. Malcadors are not comparable to the rogal dorn. If you want a Malcador, you need to use it as such. The dracosan has no 40k rules, but maybe you can say it’s a Malcador defender if you feel like it.

In all seriousness, Guard have been my one true love since I started playing in 4th Edition (~2004), although I have enjoyed playing and collecting many others as well (GSC, Sisters, and Votann rank among my other favorites). I've actually been working on a feudal Guard force (the re-released Bretonnians are the basis for my non-vehicle conversions) from a planet called Yore that the Imperium decided needed to rapidly industrialize in order to aid in the war effort in their sector, but the change has happened so abruptly and so recently that although the technology available to them has effectively leapt ahead over a thousand years overnight (dirt hovels to trailer homes, crossbows to lasguns, mules to tractors, peasant farming to sweatshop factories, you get the gist), the underlying social structure has remained essentially unchanged. One of the consequences of this is that Yoric knights, apart from some stubborn traditionalist holdouts, fight from battle tanks instead of horseback, brightly painted in their livery with their heraldry displayed proudly for all to see, banners flying from the turrets as they lead devastating mechanized cavalry charges against their enemies (It's kind of like a 40K take on "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court" by Mark Twain). Anyway, the list I'm building is thus: Questing Knights of Yore 2000 point Combined Arms Detachment Characters Commissar (the out-of-place Imperial official) Gaunt's Ghosts (highwaymen and bandits used for skirmishing) Lord Solar Leontus (because of course there's gotta be at least one guy on a horse) Platoon Command Squad (because someone's got to lead the poor bloody infantry) Tank Commander with Demolisher Cannon and Grand Strategist (drive me closer, I want to hit them with my sword!) Been playing 40K for roughly 8 months, guard was my starting army and I’m kinda glad I started somewhat decent, a lot of people at my local shop were actually surprised to see that I had a decently balanced army for a newbie when I was just like “this thing looks sick, and it fits my army theme”
The one thing I do like about the Field Ordnance Batteries over a Basilisk is that you can give them Orders from any Officer, you don’t need a Tank Commander or the Lord Solar to do it since they’re a Regiment unit. So you can save those rarer vehicle orders for the tanks and still have orders for the artillery.
Great creators for this are The Makers Cult (I have a while Kreig type army of their guys) Station Forge or ThatEvilOne. These have some of the best models for this range. ThatEvilOne has some really badass guys and unique in the space.

I just dived in head first to Guard after getting a massive bonus and some extra overtime. Guard combat patrol, heavy weapon squad, 1 Kasrkin box, and Guilliman plus some enhancements is 995 points. All I’ll need to hit 2,000 is to buy Lord Solar, a Krieg kill team, and a Baneblade, since I already own Canis Rex and a Voidsmen squad. Not that many purchases to have a seemingly fairly balanced list.
Here's how I'm breaking down my path to a full 2000 points list, with each list building off the previous one. THESE ARE NOT ARMY LISTS, just what I'm buying at each step. 500 points: Combat Patrol box, Castellan, Scout Sentinel 1000 points: Combat Patrol, Castellan, Rogal Dorn 2000 points: Lord Solar, Ursula Creed, Combat Patrol, Cadian Shock Troops, Heavy Weapons Squad, 2x Leman Russ
Honestly, right now I cannot advise _anyone_ to start collecting Guard in any meta sense, because during 10th edition GW has been churning the index so thoroughly that almost nothing that was played early on is played now (and the meta still has to settle after the _latest_ overnerfing of meta pieces for no real reason, as well). If you like the models, good! If you want to start from a meta standpoint, I think only Leontus is safe (and the more he is used because he is the only good OFFICER in the index, the less likely that becomes as well).
"for no reason" Look at the top 5/6 Guard wins in the past 2 months. Every single one contained the same 4 units and had 2-3 of each: Manticore, Basilisk, Kasrkin, Bullgryns. Literally 2/3 Manticore and basilisk per list. There's not enough variety of food Guard lists winning. I'd love to see an all infantry list, or mechanized list, or tank company, make it to the top and do well. Not just shock trooper artillery spam
@@dominicl5862 "For no reason" because Guard wasn't smashing tournaments left and right: they had seven wins in GT+ events in the whole run after the last meta shakeup, and all those wins were in the hands of players of _absurd_ skill (as a matter of fact, five of those were concentrated into a minuscule slice of the world top rankings - the top 0.5% of ELO score players). And this tracked, because not only the total winrate was pretty bad, but peer-vs-peer was pretty bad as well, with _Admech_ (!!!) doing better in basically all categories. So yeah, for no reason. They could have buffed the nonperforming lists without slamming a 170-points increase on the top-performing lists, or at least they could have provided significant buffs to go with those. Instead they did neither.
I think one thing that would be good tk touch on is the value that the blooded kit offers for guard players running a more chaos aesthetic, it gives you a squad of guys (with enough wargear to be standard infantry or ran as dkok datasheet, as well as an officer, if you rebase it, and a bullgryn, with 3 boxes thats a free squad there)
i got 560 imperial guard infantry, been casually painting them for 10 years. might get them done before i die. if you join guard you've gotta be in it for the long haul.
I’m planning an Imperial Navy Boarding Corps 1x Cadian Castilian 1x Command Squad 2x 20 Guardsmen (using Solar Auxilia as proxies since they look more like voidmen) 2x3 heavy weapons teams 3x Armored Sentinels with lascannons 3x Scout sentinels with multilas 1xMaurader Destroyer 1x Thunderbolt Fighter Using some detachment trickery, 5x Imperial Navy breacher teams. Since you can’t fit tanks inside the narrow halls of an enemy cruiser, I’ve opted to use Imperial Navy aircraft as my anti tank options
My death korps regiment: A proxy of lord solar leontus (something like a death rider representing colonel Jurten), with 10 DKKoK as a bodyguards Three 20 DKKoK infantry squads, with each a DKKoK marshall and a command squad with plasma gun, regimental standard and a mortar. One of these squads starts the game on the field, the two others are in reserves. 2 Hades breaching drills to bring the reserves to the field 1 mighty Malcador tank, followed by a regimental enginseer to not loose 250 points in one shooting phase. 1 Cyclops demolition vehicle, the mascot of the regiment really 2 single scout sentinels to recon for the battery of 3 Earthshaker canons. ~80 death Korps infantry models, heavy artillery, subterranean warfare, a heavy tank, the Death Korps of Krieg in all its glory.
3 points of advice as i have a simmilar army. 1. Try to buy sprues/used models. There is a lot for the guard 2. Watch out for the basilisk. The instruction is WRONG! Find the old one on the internet. Tehre should be no holes ont the back and bottom The cannon should be able to move! 3. Magnetize the vehicles. Especially the Leman Russes, as the veriants come and go each edition. That includes the sponsons, not just the gun in them! I tend to leave them at home if i know i play on tight terrain as without them the tank cant fit through more holes and two more plasma guns aint worth it if you cannot see/engage the target.
I really really hope that the Krieg subfaction gets the same treatment as the kroot one. We need platic weapon teams, plastic HQ, plastic riders and plastic grenadiers. Bonus points if we get monopose 20man squads like the Solar auxilia. I would be happy to buy all that. My current guard army has tons of solar auxilia units since they look cool, can pull double duty for Heresy 2.0 and are a cheaper than buying tempestus scions.
When i want to focus on Cadians is it still cheaper to look for 3rdparty alternatives, like for other regiments, or should i just buy them from my local gamingstore? (33 Euros per 10 man squad)
Building a plantery invasion army.. Combined cadian and catachan jungle fighters. With guants ghosts as my special. But I haven't decided on how many tanks, but I am getting 4 earthshakers
Funnily enough I’ve been working on a new guard army, been loving building and painting them. Just need to get hold of 3 russ tanks and a squad of scions to finish them off!
Also recommend looking into CSM cultist spam. Converted a ton of spare failed Cadians from when I was learning to paint into Nurglite Traitor Guard and running them in the CSM format is a fun change of pace. You do need a hell of a lot of then though.

Im trying to get into the hobby and i just keep coming back to the guard. Space marines make cool poster boys and im still on the fence for just building an Iron Hands army to save some bucks, probably would have already if it weren't for how relatively rare their transfer sheets are But man... the guard keep pulling me back in. I think id do an armored division just to up my points per dollar a tad bit
I just want to get casually into tabletop RTS with my dad who played it in the90‘s, I saw a set of around 50 guardsmen with a walker an arc and a tank for about 80 dollars. Is it a good purchase considering that i‘ve seen people sell sets of 10 unpainted soldiers for 100 dollars?
Step one buy 6 boxes of Bullgryns and enjoy your time building and playing with them as they will be irrelevant in 11th Edition if you are buying an IG army you are going to live a life of being smashed by the meta hammer constantly each edition and your Army relying on a one trick pony wonder unit each edition
Having a large Krieg Army to play any game up to 10k for apocalypse games or a 2k match up, I'm proud not to have anything printed or 3rd party I'm not happy with GW at all for favouring making prices so bad you don't want to go down the official route and get a printer it's sad .
Would really appreciate a video focused on collecting guard regiments other than Cadians. It’s difficult especially for newer players to properly collect Catachans or some of the older metal regiments.

I just dived in head first to Guard after getting a massive bonus and some extra overtime.
Guard combat patrol, heavy weapon squad, 1 Kasrkin box, and Guilliman plus some enhancements is 995 points.
All I’ll need to hit 2,000 is to buy Lord Solar, a Krieg kill team, and a Baneblade, since I already own Canis Rex and a Voidsmen squad.
Not that many purchases to have a seemingly fairly balanced list.
Guilliman just casually watching as a Greater Demon of Khorne gets a Taxi sized hole through it by the bane blade
Here's how I'm breaking down my path to a full 2000 points list, with each list building off the previous one. THESE ARE NOT ARMY LISTS, just what I'm buying at each step.
500 points: Combat Patrol box, Castellan, Scout Sentinel
1000 points: Combat Patrol, Castellan, Rogal Dorn
2000 points: Lord Solar, Ursula Creed, Combat Patrol, Cadian Shock Troops, Heavy Weapons Squad, 2x Leman Russ
Honestly, right now I cannot advise _anyone_ to start collecting Guard in any meta sense, because during 10th edition GW has been churning the index so thoroughly that almost nothing that was played early on is played now (and the meta still has to settle after the _latest_ overnerfing of meta pieces for no real reason, as well). If you like the models, good! If you want to start from a meta standpoint, I think only Leontus is safe (and the more he is used because he is the only good OFFICER in the index, the less likely that becomes as well).

Look at the top 5/6 Guard wins in the past 2 months. Every single one contained the same 4 units and had 2-3 of each: Manticore, Basilisk, Kasrkin, Bullgryns. Literally 2/3 Manticore and basilisk per list. There's not enough variety of food Guard lists winning. I'd love to see an all infantry list, or mechanized list, or tank company, make it to the top and do well. Not just shock trooper artillery spam
@@dominicl5862 "For no reason" because Guard wasn't smashing tournaments left and right: they had seven wins in GT+ events in the whole run after the last meta shakeup, and all those wins were in the hands of players of _absurd_ skill (as a matter of fact, five of those were concentrated into a minuscule slice of the world top rankings - the top 0.5% of ELO score players).
And this tracked, because not only the total winrate was pretty bad, but peer-vs-peer was pretty bad as well, with _Admech_ (!!!) doing better in basically all categories.
So yeah, for no reason. They could have buffed the nonperforming lists without slamming a 170-points increase on the top-performing lists, or at least they could have provided significant buffs to go with those. Instead they did neither.

I think one thing that would be good tk touch on is the value that the blooded kit offers for guard players running a more chaos aesthetic, it gives you a squad of guys (with enough wargear to be standard infantry or ran as dkok datasheet, as well as an officer, if you rebase it, and a bullgryn, with 3 boxes thats a free squad there)
for anyone new new: new leman russ kits just came out for horus heresy, see if you can find 3 of the old models for cheap through the community

Using some detachment trickery, 5x Imperial Navy breacher teams.
Since you can’t fit tanks inside the narrow halls of an enemy cruiser, I’ve opted to use Imperial Navy aircraft as my anti tank options
My death korps regiment:
A proxy of lord solar leontus (something like a death rider representing colonel Jurten), with 10 DKKoK as a bodyguards
Three 20 DKKoK infantry squads, with each a DKKoK marshall and a command squad with plasma gun, regimental standard and a mortar. One of these squads starts the game on the field, the two others are in reserves.
2 Hades breaching drills to bring the reserves to the field
1 mighty Malcador tank, followed by a regimental enginseer to not loose 250 points in one shooting phase.
1 Cyclops demolition vehicle, the mascot of the regiment really
2 single scout sentinels to recon for the battery of 3 Earthshaker canons.
~80 death Korps infantry models, heavy artillery, subterranean warfare, a heavy tank, the Death Korps of Krieg in all its glory.
3 points of advice as i have a simmilar army.
1. Try to buy sprues/used models. There is a lot for the guard
2. Watch out for the basilisk. The instruction is WRONG! Find the old one on the internet. Tehre should be no holes ont the back and bottom The cannon should be able to move!
3. Magnetize the vehicles. Especially the Leman Russes, as the veriants come and go each edition. That includes the sponsons, not just the gun in them! I tend to leave them at home if i know i play on tight terrain as without them the tank cant fit through more holes and two more plasma guns aint worth it if you cannot see/engage the target.

I really really hope that the Krieg subfaction gets the same treatment as the kroot one. We need platic weapon teams, plastic HQ, plastic riders and plastic grenadiers. Bonus points if we get monopose 20man squads like the Solar auxilia. I would be happy to buy all that.
My current guard army has tons of solar auxilia units since they look cool, can pull double duty for Heresy 2.0 and are a cheaper than buying tempestus scions.
Can you make the same for Iron Warriors? It also would be great to show examples of army lists for 750 - 1000 - 1500 points
The new recruit app is a very solid way of putting an army list together and trying some stuff out.
Funny thing about the sentinel is that you can leave the weapon unglued and it will pressure fit
When i want to focus on Cadians is it still cheaper to look for 3rdparty alternatives, like for other regiments, or should i just buy them from my local gamingstore? (33 Euros per 10 man squad)

U can buy 3d printed guardsmen with no hazard from 3d printers materials. It will be like 4-5 times cheaper.
So glad i started Imperial guard back in 6th when infantry were Cad$34.50 and all the tanks were $55
Frankly the plastic for the gun can sit on pretty tight so I wouldn't worry about magnetizing.
Building a plantery invasion army.. Combined cadian and catachan jungle fighters. With guants ghosts as my special. But I haven't decided on how many tanks, but I am getting 4 earthshakers
Funnily enough I’ve been working on a new guard army, been loving building and painting them. Just need to get hold of 3 russ tanks and a squad of scions to finish them off!
Ebay and etsy are your friend for 3D printed goodness. I paid £22 for my Russ and £27 for my Dorn and I couldn't be happier

Also recommend looking into CSM cultist spam. Converted a ton of spare failed Cadians from when I was learning to paint into Nurglite Traitor Guard and running them in the CSM format is a fun change of pace. You do need a hell of a lot of then though.
On the topic of horus heresy leman russ if you buy it then one 40k russ you have enough sponsons for both from the 40k box.

I just want to get casually into tabletop RTS with my dad who played it in the90‘s, I saw a set of around 50 guardsmen with a walker an arc and a tank for about 80 dollars. Is it a good purchase considering that i‘ve seen people sell sets of 10 unpainted soldiers for 100 dollars?

Having a large Krieg Army to play any game up to 10k for apocalypse games or a 2k match up, I'm proud not to have anything printed or 3rd party I'm not happy with GW at all for favouring making prices so bad you don't want to go down the official route and get a printer it's sad .
Would really appreciate a video focused on collecting guard regiments other than Cadians. It’s difficult especially for newer players to properly collect Catachans or some of the older metal regiments.

Step one: Find out how many mortgages you can get. If it's less than 3, don't bother.
Step 2: Join a Buddah temple. You'll need that level of patience to paint 300k of the same models
Step 3: Bid your friends and family good bye. You'll never see them again until everything is painted
Finally: Rent a U-Haul and become your local hobby store's favorite customer.
