Most full service Middle Eastern and A5ian airlines don’t have this problem as their ticket prices always include check-in baggage allowance like the good old days of flying. The passengers don’t have to pay extra just to check-in their luggage. They also very rarely lose their checked bags with these airlines.

One problem in the West is people pack too much stuff and try to do carry-on for all of it. Gate agents need to be stricter on how much they allow on imo, despite how nasty the passenger yells and screams.

My 2 major complaints are not on the airlines but the passengers. First, passengers entering the place throw their carry-on into the first open slot and then head to the back of the plane where their seat is. These leaves the people in front to go to the back of the plane to put their bag in the overhead which they can't reach during the exiting of the plane. Secondly, and even more inconsiderate, is the people who throw both of their bags into the overhead, filling up the overhead even faster. For them it's all about their own convenience.

If I may make a small rectification (for having work for airlines and an airport): I can tell you that it's not the airline that loses your bag, it's the airport. Your bag will get stuck on the conveyor belt taking it to your plane or the barcode on the tag will not scan properly and be send on a completely different flight or stay at the airport. Travel tip: if you're flying as a couple and checking bags, put items in each other's suitcases. The chance that two bags get lost is far less than just one. Have a nice flight!

As someone who was 100% travel for a three year and was on a minimum of three flights a week, I was the highest level on one airline and middle tier on another airline that I flew at the time. From my vantage point the biggest problem with all of this is the passenger who does not wish to carry their bag to whatever their seat is and feels that they should be able to put it in the first available bin space so the person sitting in row 4 or 5 has no bin space because the person who is row 32 threw their bag up there. Bottom line there’s just a lack of civility in addition to the airline’s lack of consideration.

I carry only an 18 x 12 x 6 inch backpack which I place under the seat in front of me. In it I pack 4 shirts, 2 pants, 5 socks, 5 underwear, sleepwear, a 3-1-1 bag, a small tech bag and a small bag for toiletries and medicine. Sometimes I carry a 13 inch MacBook Air. I know you will disagree with me, but people really do carry way, way more than then need. Not want, but NEED.

However, I refuse to wash clothes in the sink while on vacation, so I will always pack a pair of underwear per day gone, plus one extra in an emergency kit in my personal item. And, yes, I have actually needed that extra pair a couple times. Makes it worth carrying.
I’m not naturally a minimalist, but I have learned to pack less. Down to carry-on and personal item. Would like to do one bag travel, but haven’t found the right backpack/personal item yet. Any suggestions?

I only fly about 4 times a year. I've given up on carry-on luggage, and I prefer to check my luggage these days. I don't like lugging a heavy backpack around the
terminal after check-in and small wheeled cabin luggage rolls around ok but can still be tiring to lug around. I just have a very small carry-on bag for essential during the flight and one minimal change of clothing for emergencies. Then I don't have the stress of the overheads being taken up and I can walk around the terminal unencumbered. Rarely has my luggage ever been lost. And I have travel credit cards that often pay for checked luggage.

This is driving me insane. My wife and I just got back from a month in southern Europe and we took a total of seven slights on our trip, and playing the race to get overhead bin space is a serious bummer part of flying. One thing that irks me is that we have each a carefully sized carry-on and carefully sized "personal bag" that fits under the seat. And we put our carry-on bag in the overhead bin and then the personal bag under the seat. So many people put everything they have in the overhead bin, taking up valuable space needed for carry-on bags.

It’s not only unfair to everyone else, it’s against the rules, and they aren’t called out and taught they are wrong.

Carry-on is not always about paying more. 7 months ago my daughter went on honey moon with her husband and took all her best clothes with her, also bough many new expensive pieces for beautiful photo shoot. She arrived from Europe to Miami to find out that her suitcase never made it. From Miami, they traveled to Los Angeles, Bora Bora, San Francisco and back to Europe. Her suitcase has never been found. She stayed 3 weeks without even spare underwear and instead of enjoying her honeymoon, they had to go for shopping. Their honeymoon was totally ruined. I had my own luggage delayed for several days countless times and I ended up being in another country without clothes. Not to mention, that when you stay in a private B&B ( and not at a hotel with reception), you cannot go on tour or explore nice places because you have to sit in the apartment the whole day waiting for the delivery of your delayed luggage.

@@MsTatianaL1 You could have your most important items like underwear etc. in your carry on baggage so that you are on the safe side and leave the rest in a checked baggage. The risk of losing your bag is extremely small like less than one percent. Yes it happens but being paranoid about a less than 1% chance and having a nearly 100% chance of causing trouble for everyone else is not worth it in my opinion.

I have been traveling with a carry on & backpack forever. I usually pack my "last rights" clothes and pillow with a change of clothes in my backpack. My backpack usually has a lot of food since I have allergies. This way my return home is pretty light as my "last rights" clothes and pillow have been left behind and all my food snacks have been consumed. I usually don't buy souvenirs anymore. My pet peeve is when people leave the plane trashed, change their kid on food tray, have stinky body/feet, guys if you can't hit the toilet then have a seat and stop peeing on the floor.

Waiting for people to store and retrieve their bags overhead in the never ending game of tetrus is a pain. I wait while they deal with their stuff and then wait again at the baggage carousel. These are not carry on bags - they are suitcases of the maximum possible dimensions and there is simply not enough room. Add to that ultra aggressive passengers who will literally take your small bag out of storage bins so they can shove in their monstrosities, and fights kick off.

I was once stuck in an airport for one day,and a hotel for one day. No hotels available the first night. Mind you,my flight wasn’t the only one canceled. I joyfully carried my little purse to the gate that day. Well when my flight canceled and there weren’t any flights to get me home for those two days,I quickly had regrets about not carrying on at least a few things that would have made my lack of accommodations a little more comfortable. Also even though I was to stay at the airport I was told I could not obtain my luggage….Needless to say,I was washing out my under clothes in the sink and brushing my teeth with a washcloth. Never could understand why the little convience store in the airport didn’t have a tooth brush. I will also say it was my first experience traveling alone and having to figure things out alone. As luck would have it, I since have had multiple experiences being stuck halfway between where I was traveling from to getting home. I absolutely know I am not alone in this scenario, but am always prepared now. Lol,I’m getting old now so I guess if the airlines decide to gouge us to carry on, it might be time to send my suitcases to the thrift store and call it a day.😊 After all it’s just business. I do think that executives should go undercover and travel like us peasants to see how the cattle call feels. Take care all!

I’ve been retired and traveling full time going on 9 years now. I have no home base and only keep a small storage space, so my worldly possessions are contained in my suitcase. I check it every time I fly and I have a small backpack that contains my “unlosables” like electronics and documents. It never fails
to gob smack me the size of people’s “carry-ons”. Many are the same size as my checked luggage and I dare say some are bigger. Yes checking your luggage increases the price of your ticket and it is, in proportion, much more expensive on short haul flights ( sometimes it almost doubles the price ) but seriously the airlines need to crack the whip on this. The overhead bins are stuffed and then you have these “precious” travelers who are half the size of their carry-on who cannot even put it in the bin so other passengers have to get up to assist. I’m all for people helping each other but you can tell they are just used to it and expect someone else to lift up their carry-on for them. Oh and of course, they need help getting it out after landing. You won’t see them forking over 40-80 bucks to check that heavy piece of luggage. I keep my backpack at my feet because it’s a jungle up there 😬

Drop the price of checked bags and charge for carry-ons, 60/40 cost ratio, maybe 70/30. If people were only going to save a small amount by dragging their stuff on to the plane, less people would do it an loading would go smoother. You could look at it the other way, that it's an advantage not have to wait for your bag if you carry on, therefore you should pay more.
As for loading times, for the love of.... load the back of the planes first! The amount of time that is lost due to people messing with the over-head and getting settled in their seats while the next group waits behind them drive me insane. As for the first-class customers, you still get all the extras that you paid for AND you don't have to be on the plane as long. I'm pretty sure most people that go for the premium fare don't do it so they can sit first while the peasants hit them in the face with their purses/coats/carry-ons as they walk by.

just did about 8 plane changes on a recent trip, and most of the time, the bin space is packed with people who use it for their personal items! small bags, coats, purse, etc. i literally moved someone's bag in front of another small bag cause it was just 2 small ones so i could fit my bag up there. or the problem is people having huge "carry ons". Southwest actually enforced having 2 bags. when someone was boarding, they made them step to the side and condense into 2 bags. so there was always bin space when i changed with them.
airlines are in a rush to get as many flights going as possible in a day, but they really need to have a bag size checker when boarding and crack down on it.

These are the ones that need to be waiting on their bags on arrival, not those of us who pack much less and/or use cloth bags that are easy to squish in the bin. Make the size requirements even smaller with enforcement, even if it means hiring an extra gate agent at our expense. All will go much smoother. That's the best angle I think, while all strategies have pros and cons. Regardless something needs to change.

Well I'm so old I remember travel by air in the 1960s when even flying Third Class (er, sorry Economy!) delivered a large comfortable seat and hold luggage was part of the package. Indeed the overhead bins had no doors and were meant for things like coats and perhaps a bag of duty free booze and fags. In the intervening years air travel had become (relatively!) much cheaper and the airlines have delivered this by making the seats smaller, closer together and far less comfortable. The airlines also want you to carry on your luggage to reduce the effort needed to load all those prepared to be treated as "self loading cargo". If you want air travel to be pleasant most airlines offer First and Second Class ("Business") and in my dotage , that is the only way I will fly!

True, carry on bags and checked bags weigh a similar amount. A reason to send bags downstairs vs putting them into the overhead bin is to actually account for that weight in the weight and balance calculation being used by the crew to accomplish all the performance calculations needed to accomplish the flight safely. Cary on bags are counted into the assumed averages of the passengers occupying the seat. This is done using average weights of people and luggage in samples and then extrapolating those numbers out. Bags going downstairs are counted additionally also using average weights from a sample.
Additionally, the bins certified weight has to be more than double the actual weight of what’s inside the bin because of the aircraft certification. All transport category aircraft that I know of are certified to 2.0 or 2.5 positive g’s. The bin has to be certified to double the actual weight of the contents in case the aircraft actually ends up in a 2 g maneuver which if the weight exceeded that, the bin could fall on the passengers.
It is absolutely true that flying has become a miserable experience and everyone traveling with Cary on bags is diminishing the experience. During the recession of 2008 and fuel crunch that was a part of that economy, airlines started charging for checked luggage as an additional revenue stream which had the unintended consequence of everyone now trying to carry on all their luggage.

  • @R.Hogarth
    @R.Hogarth 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

IMHO, I think it has a LOT to do with putting in more rows of seats. The airline can update the systems to allow more A/C, more lights & even more drop down emergency O2 masks to accommodate the extra rows of seating, but there is a finite amount of room in the overhead storage area. If the airline adds (hypothetically) 5 more rows of seats on a standard 3+3 seating, the that is 30 extra passengers but no extra overhead room for them. (How often have you heard that the airline is looking for specifically 30 people to gate check their carry-on when it is a full flight?)

A problem I see as a Cabin Crew member is that it’s not just the carry on suitcase that goes overhead but the limp backpack, coat, and even take out bags going in the bins as well. So by the time group three boards, check check check check check. Not only that but it takes longer to unload everything and put it away in the bins, holding up boarding, instead of just placing the one suitcase above and everything else under the seat in front of you. And people also bring more than the two items the FAA allots for each passenger in the cabin.

It is a challenge. One way I find some peace is to pack a soft-sided carry-on that will comfortably fit in the overhead (ie - I can squeeze it into almost any space) or worse case I cram it under the seat in front of me and deal with limited leg room for a shortish flight. I have had to gate-check even my very small soft-sided bag occasionally on shorter flights, but I feel no shame in that because my bag is noticeably smaller and lighter than any other passenger. In those instances (which have thankfully been rare), I have recovered my bag on the other end with no issue. Longer flights tend to have larger planes and I rarely run into this problem on long-haul flights. Solution? Be content traveling lighter. I've been amazed at how light I can go even when traveling as a father and husband.

The last time I tried carrying on was the LAST time. It seemed everyone on that flight was carrying on. I had to put my bag in an overhead bin in the back of the plane. Getting back to my seat was a whole other issue I don't care to discuss. I'll happily pay to check my bag to avoid that situation!

I had a similar problem because despite having a forward seat, I didn't board quick enough to grab a nearby overhead bin. When I got to passport control at my home airport, I saw a couple with NOTHING in the way of baggage, not even a handbag or backpack. They must have had their passport in one pocket, with phone and keys in another. That's the way to travel.

Alaska Airlines is the best. Checked luggage is rarely late, but they give 2,500 air miles if it's 20+ minutes later than gate arrival time. They also don't strictly enforce the slightly oversized carry-on bag size on the B737-800, B737-900 and the MAX models because the overhead bins are so huge.
I would be totally fine with Alaska or any other airline enforcing carry-on size rules.
If they want to plan better, they could weigh or measure the carry-ons at the checked bag drop, and add a note to the computer so the gate agents know what's coming their way.

Passengers are more to blame than the airlines.
People think they need WAY more than they do to travel.
1 pair of pants per three days (or four if you are just going out and coming back that quickly). 1 pair of unders & socks per day, one shirt per day.
Then pack correctly - roll your clothes.
When you land just overpay a little for a tooth brush, paste, and pit stick. I can pack a week's worth of everything I need in a bag the size of a woman's purse.
I am still working on my wife about this. She quite literally takes three times the things I do and yet with the things I take I still don't run into issues.
And no, for you "I need a suit or dress" folks - that isn't everyone. Most people are just vacationing.
I could line the inside of a coat with all my luggage for a week and just look like a guy that is 25lbs overweight.
Also, if you are going to carry-on, stop with the hardshell luggage! There is no need to have a carry-on that has no flexibility or ability to conform to a tighter space.
But even if you don't like my methods, just packing right would cut the space that most people take up with their things by half.

Having flown for several decades, one thing that really stands out is how cheap flying is compared to 30 or 40 years ago. While the cost of McDonalds and Housing has over quadrupled in that time, flying has only gotten cheaper. Which is why we keep seeing cost cutting measures going on at the airlines. So with that in mind, I simply pay the extra for the mental sanity to have a better overall experience. Even simply checking your bags will let you completely avoid the chaos at the gate. If you don't need overhead bin space, then you can be the last to board and have a better experience than most -- I'd rather be in the airport than crammed into my seat on an airplane. Plus you loose all of the stress of having to find a place for your bag, have a fight (or passenger!) move your belongings, etc). Add a bit of third party trip insurance and you're golden. If your bags are not delivered promptly you have the money to go on a shopping spree to get your essentials for your trip. All still for less than the cost of the flight in the 80s or 90s (even without adjusting for inflation).

I’m in a job that requires a good bit of extended overseas travel. Many times I have to check luggage. I can verify that 50% of the time my bag has been delayed by 1-2 days or lost entirely. Airline reimbursement for lost baggage requires an inventory (to include receipts - do you keep AND CARRY - receipts with you? ) I’m there to do a job, not shop for lost or delayed belongings. I always carry on a bag with toiletries and one additional days clothing. They don’t tell you, but your checked bag often doesn’t go out until the next flight. Airlines should up their game for on-time delivery of checked bags. That would solve customers’ confidence.

@@wegwre well, I would say you were lucky or didn't travel where I did. In one case, I traveled to Prague for a week and my bag showed up the day I returned, with no compensation from the airline for having to buy clothes and toiletries. Several trips to rural Romania and on every other flight my bag was delayed at least a day, which required me drive 2 1/2 hours each way to Bucharest to get it. I will not check a bag unless I have no other option because the service is so unreliable.

Travel is stressful enough so I prefer to remove those stress factors and check all my bags except for what can go at my feet. Trying to time when to get in line for your group just so you can be near the front in order to get bin space is a ridiculous game. And, by not having to worry about baggage, you can get on the plane LAST.... as nobody in their right mind wants to sit inside the fuselage for longer than absolutely necessary. After all, when boarding starts is the time to go drain your bladder so that (hopefully) you don't have to use the tiny one on the airplane while it's bouncing around. It helps to always board a direct flight so that your checked bags aren't transferred.

Airlines also allow medical devices on board at no charge. I travel with a personal item under the seat. In the overhead I have a carryon and a CPAP machine. I do gate check my walker or electric wheelchair.

IMHO, the airline should not only limit carry-on size and weight, but enforce those limitations as well, because I've seen quite a lot people bringing more than 1 carry-on per person too many times. And also more often than not overhead bins are full of duty free stuff
Last time when returning from my business trip I found out there weren't even space for my winter jacket in the bin, let alone carry-on bag

  • @Phlimbob

I also get annoyed when i see people put their personal items and jackets into the overhead bins. Put personal items under the seat first and only put them up in the bins if there is room. Jackets too, keep those at your seat and NEVER put them in the bins!
