Thank you. Biggest tip for me was the suggestion to ask the model to turn, look toward the modifier until they see the liner inside the softbox - in order to insure a catchlight in the eyes. Everyone says how important catchlights are. Meanwhile, Sophie should post her video on how she creates those mesmerizing facial expressions. Or maybe she really doesn't know - just confidence that comes with lots of practice and experience.
Hello Gavin, Freya, and Sam. I hope you guys are good. I am in sw Florida USA. I really enjoy watching the videos y'all do. Please keep up the great job. Thanks and blessed be
39:41 With that photo, I will close the session coz I have what I need; Great memory, Emotion, Feel and everything is in there. ❤❤❤ That laugh makes my hear melt and love Sophi xo much 😅😅😅😅 thanks to Cloi 😅😂😂🎉🎉🎉
Doh I never thought about just using the modelling lamp when I was practicing with a 3 strobe set up I got off eBay I’m just getting back into studio photography shooting my granddaughter so got little set up and trying to shoot almost wide open so I ended up using a variable nd to get the right balance Love the effect of the grid as well will get couple a them for my soft boxes great video 👍👍👍
Hi Sarah, probably the main reason I avidly follow and look forward to your vids is the personal aspect. By that I mean you graciously invite us into your life which is an absolute delight... it's the narrative I love as well as the wonderful images.❤
Great video guys. Sophie is just a natural poser, she knows the right pose to hit and uses her hands very well. This just proves you can do a photoshoot in your living room without a ton of space.I especially loved the low key shots of Sophie at the beginning when you started feathering the light.
The photography dream team did it again ❤❤❤ … so much to learn from this video, especially about the capabilities of a grid. Looking forward to the next video. 👍👍👍
Thanks so much for this video. I have a photo shoot coming up with a race horse in a small stable. The lessons I learned here will transfer nicely to my situation. Thanks again, keep up the great work.
Gavin I used the opportunity to take advantage of one of the Adorama deals on the Flashpoint XPLOR 300 Pro kit. Absolutely love it as well as the 24" Hexapop that came with it. Thank you and to Adorama for the savings.
Brilliant overview, can you comment on using the two collapsible backgrounds ie one on the b/g and one on the floor. I find the intersection of the floor and b/g distracting how would you deal with that ie PS?
One of the things I don't see a lot is how these spaces are small with the length and width, however Gavin's studio space there has a very high ceiling. Having a low ceiling can add additional constraints - trying to do a full body portrait with a low ceiling will leave you banging your softbox against the ceiling. I'd like to see some 'low ceiling' tips.
just wondering if Gavin has seen the 3d printed Bowen's mount light strainer that someone made and people can download and print for themselves. works awesome.
I'd love to have watched this live and to post live comments, but here in South Eastern Australia it was scheduled for 4am in the morning while it's still dark outside, cold and wet...
Sorry I couldn't watch it live Sir Gavin, but you know I couldn't wait to see it today. Again, 100% and two thumbs up from me, always a learning experience. Well done the Hoey team, when are you going to do some workshops again PLEASE????
Please after some advice, Ive got a Bowens xmt500 battery strobe, If i set my D850 to M 1/250th sec (FP) and ISO 100. and the aperture to F8 The flash is set to Manual. Without the flash the image is black, however even with the flash at full power the image is still black. The only way i can get any light even then its under exposed is to set the shutter to 1/60th. Ive checked the obvious no bracketing set etc no exposure compensation etc. Ive tried it with my D4 and its exactly the same. Any pointers?
My answer to question about no shoes: No need for full-lengths. Unless I HAVE to get a full-length, they don't need shoes. I, and most of my clients, prefer closer images anyway.😊
Great video! Lots of tips and tricks I never thought of utilizing - even after 30 years of being a photog. I guess old dogs (like me) can still learn new tricks 😂. Thanks for all your efforts and knowledge sharing. And kudos to Sophie and your crew as well 👍👍👍
Great video, as usual, but I still maintain one "beef" with your term "Sync Speed." When you state that 1/250 sec is "the" sync speed for your camera, the implication perceived is that this is the ONLY sync speed. And this is simply not true, as any shutter speed slower is still a valid sync speed. Correctly termed, the fastest shutter speed that can be used on a focal plane shutter, with flash, would be considered the "MAXIMUM sync speed."
Everytime i get over my crush on Sophie, you bring her back in your videos to get my heart pumping fast once again. 😊 . Awesome video as usual Gav!!
Gavin Hoey is a master instructor and all around fun guy to learn from..Sophie is a genuinely natural beautiful model too.
Sophie was extra amazing today! That was a good tip Gavin about taking a wide photo to show where the light from the flash is hitting the reflector.
Hi Jeff, simple tip that but oh so educational 😊
Always educational and well done Gavin - and Sophie is a fantastic model! :)
Extremely comprehensive display of versatility. Epic
Shout out to whoever is watching from Knoxville!
Thank you for sharing your experience over years, you're the man Gavin. James from South Carolina USA

I still say the Light Strainer, the Paniel and the Brooklyn Reflector should be marketed as a package deal.

In Asia you can buy lead diving weights pretty cheap to put in "sandbags". Gravel here would be very dirty
Ahhhh I missed the exclusive sale...please bring it back!!
Not only did I learn a few new things, I got a great deal on another light! Thank you!
Perfect, double win 😊
Many thanks ...always something to learn.

I missed the promo 😢 Great work with the tutorial! Sophie has beautiful blue eyes!
Just watching this now and sadly the coupon doesn't work any more. Will it be reissued?
Superb video! Really enjoyed your presentations at the photo show in Birmingham recently.
Just brilliant!

You're always welcome Kirsty. Thank you for watching 👍
@@GavinHoey your most very welcome 🙏 Gavin as always 😊
Excellent work Gavin, it looked a lot of fun. Beautiful model, beautfiul images 👍🙂

Ceiling height here is 7'10", not low but certainly not high. As I said in the live stream, I'd swap floor space for ceiling height any day!
back to basics, great episode
Informative content and tips Thanks Gavin, useful stuff.
