  • In 1477 I look at an unusual lock here in the U.S., the Master Lock interpretation of what a Zeiss (or cross) lock looks like. As usual, you will be disappointed in some of their design decisions... Big surprise....not.

    Maybe they made it cross shaped because at this point they’re just praying for their locks to keep someone out?

  • @WilliamMancel
    @WilliamMancel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice of Master Lock making that lock easier to pick. They didn't want to make it too hard to get in. After all, they have a crappy reputation (for the core) to uphold. Easy to shim, & pick, but it looks difficult from the outside, to the uninformed. At least it's more pins to pick. I want to get one, but its probably one of those things that Master only markets outside USA.

      Is it possible someone could have suggested that lock NEEDS to be pickable? As a countermeasure against having to destroy the lock, if the user loses access? Granted, it's pretty stupid, but somehow it seems reasonable, at least to me... shrugs.

  • @Leeuw96
    @Leeuw96 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    The motto of this channel should be the same as Dante's inferno's: "Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate". To keep your stuff protected by a lock, that is. A note saying simply "please don't" seems just about equally effective at this point...

    Very interesting for Master Lock to use a cross lock design, I agree the key profile was modified slightly for religious/sales aspects. This however sabotaged a great security feature inherit in the cross lock, the tensioning issue blocking the pins.
    What a shame..Master Lock tries so hard? Then sabotage themselves over and over..why?? Do they want to design a bad lock on purpose?! Honestly no clue!!

  • @silentscorn5072

    I'd guess that the extended one leg of the keyway to intersect the edge of the core so that they could broach the keyway on the same kind of machine used for regular pin tumbler lock cores.

  • @compactc9

    I just bought a work truck with a utility van body on the back, and in addition to the locks built into the latches, it has a mechanism on each side to lock the side compartments with a padlock or two, there are two holes. And as of now there’s a thing on the back doors to lock this with one too. My question is what locks are the overall best to locking up my tools and such. And on the back doors, would one of those puck lock type things be better? I don’t want to get robbed...

  • @KDP_Beaver
    @KDP_Beaver 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    “The hardest part is maintaining tension.” I can just imagine it is super easy, barely an inconvenience with that extra leg. That is literally nothing but a tension crevice.

    They should rather keep the keyway in a curved paracentric cross format.
    I was thinking it only had four pins period. One on each side.

    • @alaeriia01
      @alaeriia01 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh geez, I just pictured a lock with a cruciform keyway, but the cross twists 90 degrees (or more!) from front to back. The key would be similarly twisted. Good luck picking those back four pins when you can't get at them!

    These are relatively common in Mexico, I got the dimple version for USD $2 and I use it for the locker at work. I do have much better locks but all are key retaining and it is nuisance because I keep the key in the lanyard of my badge. Of course none of this is secure at all.

    I don't think that key would be all that difficult to use in the dark. Just use your thumb or index finger to locate the notch on the key and your other hand to locate the rainguard. Orient them to each other and your good to go. The hardest part would be finding the keyway, which would be an issue with any lock in a low/no light situation.

  • @travismartin2379

    I think master lock designs their lock to be able to be picked. If you think about it and I could be totally wrong the main costumers of master locks don’t know anything about locks. This means when they lose the keys they might call a lock Smith to get it open. Not sure just thinking out loud.

    Out of curiosity, is there a pick technique where you tension the lock, and deliberately overset all the pins, then gently reduce the tension on the bar, and let each pin slide down and catch the edge in the SET position?
