  • "When You Believe" is the Official Movie Soundtrack of Prince of Egypt.
In the film, this song of inspiration is performed by the characters Tzipporah (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Miriam (sung by Sally Dworsky). The protagonists of this ballad recall tough times that have them questioning their faith: they have prayed for many nights to God but those prayers seem to remain unanswered, and they wonder if they are wasting their time. Nevertheless, they realize that although times may be difficult, "there can be miracles when you believe" in God.

I love when the children start to sing in Hebrew from Exodus 15:
    A-shir-ra la-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-oh
(I will sing to the Lord for he has triumphed gloriously)
    A-shir-ra la-do-nai ki ga-oh ga-oh

    Mi-cha-mo-cha ba-elim adonai
(Who is like You, oh Lord, among the gods)
    Mi-ka-mo-cha ne-dar-ba-ko-desh
(Who is like You, majestic in holiness)
    Na-chi-tah v'-chas-d'-cha am zu ga-al-ta

Small part that gets me is the old woman who probably spent her life a slave and thought she'd die there horribly, and now that freedom IS in her grasp she almost cant leave. It isnt until a child's encouragement that she can move forward, like how different generations can help each other through trauma.

When this movie was released, I was likely 9 years old. I enjoyed singing along with some of the songs, but never got teary eyed. Now I am 28 years old, I can't help my tears from flowing. It's like a mixture of nostalgia and melancholy, reminding me of the wonder years of my childhood and the bitterness of reality that those days are long gone. I sometimes feel sad knowing that I enjoyed a wonderful childhood, but there were others, who didn't have a chance because of human selfishness and cruelty. It would have been kind if all humanity, no matter how insane, will just spare children from the cruelty.

I sooo want to se a movie sequense like that !!!💖 In the version i just created in my mind, the song would stop for a while close to the end while Mary Magdalene suddenly sees someone behind her. She slowly turns, asks ”Where did you take my Lord”, and Jesus says ”Mary!” And Mary Magdalene says ”Master!” You know, John 21 in the Bible . After that, the song would start again, in a higher, more joyful key. I can sooo see it in my mind! I can se Mary Magdalene crying, shown in close up, then a shadow falls over her, and it is the Lord💖
I have too much imagination 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes and no. I actually did research on this (for a separate reason). The pentagram represents the Wicca religion. And to some it used to represent feminine energies (right-side up meant male energy). In the ancient world it had a lot of meanings depending on where you came from. The satanic pentagram sometimes has an elongated bottom point.

Oh when that old woman is afraid to leave and that little girl assurez her it'll be okay and pulls her along. That just gets me. You see the pain the old had to endure and the fear they had and the hope the young have, unafraid of adventure because they have hope for the future. I hope that's our generation. Many of us didn't have to work for our freedom, our rights. Yeah we have trouble keeping our rights now, but it's very different from the civil rights days and our independence. To the youth of our nation it is our job to keep the nation going in the hopes of a brifht future, always learning from the past. If you read this far, thank you! For those who are asking what the Hebrew is in this song: It is actually excerpts from the Song at the Sea after the LORD drowned the Egyptian Cavalry chasing the Israelites through the Sea, a song that both Moses and Miriam sang.
    Exodus 15:1, 11, 13, 21
1 I will sing unto the LORD, for He is highly exalted; (Ashirah laAdonai Ki Ga'oh Ga'ah)
11 Who is like unto Thee, O LORD, among the mighty? who is like unto Thee, glorious in holiness?
13 Thou in Thy love hast led the people that Thou hast redeemed; (Nachitha b'chas'decha Am zu Ga'alta)
    and Miriam sings
20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
{ס} 21 And Miriam sang unto them: Sing ye to the LORD, for He is highly exalted: the horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.

OMG I love songs of faith^^ I remember a story from one of my Ancestors who was being persecuted in Missouri because of her belief in the LDS church. While traveling to Navoo in Illinois she saw in vision the Navoo temple near the banks of the Mississippi river. She immediately began to sing "The Spirit of God", and then the whole rest of the band of followers started singing in. a year later the temple grounds were dedicated and opened. It was her revelation that came true. Her and her husband were then sealed together in the Temple for all time and for all eternity before they then left for Utah. On the way she lost her husband and her eldest son, but she kept the faith, and pressed on. Once in the Salt Lake valley she again saw the Salt Lake Temple in vision when Brigham Young smacked down his cane and said "Here we will build the Temple of our God!" She then went to work with many of the other saints building the temple, eager to see another temple built. When she went through the temple for the first time after her husbands death she saw him again smiling at her in the Sealing room. She died a faithful member of the church requesting that she be buried facing towards the Salt Lake Temple. I will forever remember her legacy as a pioneer of Faith^^

A few years ago, my family vacationed to Hong Kong, our old home. My father forced me to enroll in a five-day camp where we did 7-hour hikes, jumped off piers, and a bunch of other stupid things. On the final day, the British instructors told us to make up a skit based on our experiences at the camp. Each group of campers made a skit. The best one was when one of them started a capella singing this, and it was the greatest a capella I ever heard. I looked up the song and rediscovered the Prince of Egypt. Apparently, these guys all went to the same private school, and were in a school play based on the movie. Really makes me smile everytime I watch it now.

Well, the "best biblical movie" takes history with a certain bias. That said a good biblical movie would be extremely hard to find at any given time, so I guess it's fine. (Not denying how good this movie is, just pointing out that one shouldn't take everything it shows as historical facts. Again that's not necessarily its aim but.)

I love this song soooooooooooooo much!
Here are the Lyrics if anybody needs it! :)
    *Miriam:*
    Many nights we've prayed
With no proof anyone could hear
In our hearts a hopeful song
    We barely understood,
    Now we are not afraid
Although we know there's much to fear
    We were moving mountains
long before we knew we could...There can be miracles
    When you believe
    Though hope is frail
    It's hard to kill
    Who knows what miracles
    You can achieve
    When you believe
    Somehow you will
    You will when you believe
    *Tzipporah:*
    In this time of fear
When prayer so often proved in vain
Hope seemed like the summer birds
    Too swiftly flown away
Yet now I'm standing here (now I'm standing here)
With heart so full I can't explain
    Seeking faith and speaking words
    I never thought I'd say
    *Miriam and Tzipporah*
    (chorus)There can be miracles
When you believe (when you believe)
    Though hope is frail
Its hard to kill (Its hard to kill)
    Who knows what miracles
You can achieve (You can achieve)
    When you believe
    Somehow you will
    You will when you believe
    *Hebrew Children:*

The Bible has horrific stories about things God did, I'm not sure of the reasons why he did what he did are what the Bible says, God works in very mysterious ways, but I know in my heart of hearts that he truly does love us. He's a father, he can get frustrated but he'll always come back. We humans are grown up now, and I think that's why you don't see big miracles like this anymore, God is letting us grow up, handing responsibility to us. We just gotta remember his love. He's a good father.
