Extensive surgery is an understatement here! Wow, I remember having some simple fender work done on a car a few years ago and it wasn't until they opened it up to reveal a much larger mess. So heart braking! I'm thoroughly impressed by their work here. Seems like you guys are two peas from the same pod. Attention to detail and skill here is unbelievable!

Awesome video! I work in the collision repair industry, and have great respect for shops like these. Your car is in good hands, nothing but the best procedures being used here. Cheers! And enjoy the long expensive journey that is automotive restoration.

It is so pleasant to see this kind of craftmanship. An it ALWAYS happens Larry that you see a tiny spot outside but when you work your way into more intrincate places... it´s all rusted past the point of salvation. Keep improving that 964, it is worth it.

Two thoughts. These days we treat most cars as disposable. Secondly, there are very few craftsmen left that could do this kind of work. Cheap crappy cars, get crappy work most of the time.
Keep up the interesting videos Larry!

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

People treated cars as disposable in the 50s too, don't kid yourself; not all cars in the 40s even had oil filters. You tend to only see the best cars at car shows because people took care of those specific ones; they're not representative of all the cars that rusted out.

HondaMan Vtec the average age of a car is 12 years, and about 30% are less than 5 years old. It means the other 70% are pretty close to 20 years old.

Love the fact you have a 964 and willing to go this far with it. We have 2 930s we had to do the exact thing with. One of them not so bad, cut out rusted and rotted part and made our own patches to replace it. The other one we had to replace the roof because some put one in from a 993 and cracked the glass and rebuild the front end due to a crash. Replacing the roof is terrifying. It worked though and it is much more rigid. Glad you went this far for such a beautiful car.

Tehgziz Lauw a Porsche replacement roof is probably a fortune by itself. Porsche parts are not cheap. And most places charge 100 an hour now in labor. Which backed in this location and the high money cars there I bet it's about that much. He said he had well over 750 man hours in this car so what's that add up to in labor by itself excluding parts and materials used? 75,000 ish

Mine going in for body resto over the winter. I inherited the car. I went with my uncle to pick it up in 89 when it was new and it was the first car I drove after passing my test a month later, on my 17th birthday (with him beside me). In my 20's he use to let me borrow it if I was going on a hot date. So many memories that are priceless, so it will cost whatever it costs. She's worth it :-)

Sorry to see this bro, I know how did you feel ... Only luck you had is that you fix it before it would be too late. I just bought my "new" car I wanted for years (Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 24v V6, 190 HP), I knew there was rust, but when I dig a bit further... wow man, I cried if you believe me... What , what a shock or I don't know how to describe that feeling it was. Anyway, I wanted to drop whole project but I just cant, so I get my self together and plan is made, this will not be fast but it will be done in a proper way and for many more kilometer's in future . I wish you Good luck with project and everything come out right. Cheers, Uroš from Slovenia ! (little country in the middle of Italy and Austria)

lol this is exactly how i do it, nice work guys! i mostly use some damaged quarter panels or front fenders that i took of the car in the past to repair some older cars since it saves money for the owner of the car and also by weldig it with copper (if it's not a part of the car thats carrying any weight) it won't start rusting again (also using some tin lead replacer filler.) it's a bit of a tacky job (joke) but the end result is great and you'll be very proud of yourself when it get's out of the paintshop all nice n shiny! ( don't forget to thank the painter if you're not painting it yourself ;D)

  • @mitchellpowell8125

I bought a Buick A-body at auction, I had seen the body rust but didn't think much of it. A couple months ago I started with the rust abatement. I used the rest of the gel stuff which worked well on some areas (subframe especially) and others it worked okay. Mostly I used phosphoric acid stuff which works great on surface rust and seems to seal up deeper rust. After that, I sprayed many areas with rust reformer which seems to work good at abatement (not eliminate). I patched the holes in the wheel well and one fender with fiberglass mesh and resin. There's two holes remaining which will be easy sheet metal fixes, plus I have a welder now. Being a car only worth 1500 or so I am keeping the rust abatement in perspective and with the understanding that this is not a flip car but a daily driver. Each project is different and depending on the value involved will determine how into it your gonna get

Larry, I really enjoy your channel, particularly it's the way in which you deliver and explain the content. The best videos contain yourself showing a skill and explaining it all the way through. This body work video was well done, yet this method of delivery lacks the benefit of your one-on-one delivery style as you are a bystander in this process. Please continue to deliver videos focussing on instructing detailing skills you have spent years developing. A great video idea would be showing the cutting differences of a lower end DA polisher on various car paints from various manufacturers. Just my opinion and ideas, keep up the great work. Cheers.

Larry, Do you have any advice for restoring engine bay aluminum parts? My daily driver engine bay aluminum is dark, dull and has white powdery oxidation in places. Haven't found anything that works for me. Best thing I've found is to clean with slight abrasives but I'm not satisfied with the finish it leaves on the aluminum.

I,m doing this kind of welding about 35 years, the only way to loose rust is by cutting it away and put new metal in it, this is the only good way, nice work guys.

Wow, currently fixing up rust on a 1979 MG midget way in the northeast, and it's not nearly as bad as this Porsche. Just around inner fenders that surround the wheels (where rust, water, and snow collect) and on some areas of the fenders. I've done the same process shown in the video, but you can only do so much with flux wire welds. Applying even a thin coat of rubber undercoating will aid in this and luckily, British Leyland didn't skimp out on undercoat in the 70s

How does one drive a car with no heat in the winter? The heater core in my 944 (volvo that is) started leaking and was bypassed, so no heat at all in the car, a lot of hard work to replace it. If i drive when it's colder than about 8 degrees Celsius / 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the windshield gets foggy on the inside so you can't see nothing and have to constantly wipe it off.
