What I find so remarkable is that they have retained their original sound so well after 20 years. I mean really, think about it, how long is 20 years, that's enough time to have had children and seen them leave home. They still capture PERFECTLY what they did 20 years ago.
I believe some of the material on this album actually was recorded in the 90's. Not sure which tracks, but apparently much of it has been sitting in vaults for some time.
Stephen Roberts check out Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions also. The woman singing in Mazzy Star is Hope Sandoval. And she also has another band. You will love them too.
i think its really important to remark, for the casual listener or the younger ones, that this comeback is like a little miracle come true... for people like me who loved Mazzy Star back in the 90s !
+ramiro martinez And Hope, the band.. sound as good as ever imho.. I don't care if she's 10yrs older than I, she's still got "it". I'm so proud of her for not turning out like Madonna where you follow along with the generation and change the beauty of the old style she has . just love it . always will .
Mazzy Stars music has the incredible ability to capture 100% of my attention. It's like seeing strange lights in the sky that can't be explained or understood. In that moment nothing else matters.
Looping this beautifully haunting song all day for the second day straight!!! I think I'm going to California. Let me bring all my friends. Anyone here want to go?????
A person just can't keep delivering this kind of beauty on a daily basis, it's just not possible. I guess that's one of the reasons why they split, or took such a long break. This just shows how timeless their sound is. They can't even be called a 90's band or "dream pop" or whatever label they put on them. It's just astonishingly beautiful pop music that happens once in a while. That explains why their songs have been appearing in a large number of movies, TV series, even cartoons, from the '90 til present days. And they will keep popping up. How not to use them? They're perfect.
every decade/era has produced music as beautiful/brilliant as this. eg Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Fleetwood mac, The Only Ones, Joy Division, 10,000 Maniacs, John and Mary, Dead can dance, This mortal coil: and nowadays; Sol Seppy, PJ Harvey, Agnes Obel , London Grammar, First Aid kit: to name just a few. I saw Mazzy Star back in the 1990's and told people they were brilliant. The answer "music was better in the 60's /70/s blah blah blah" Rubbish ! Great music has lived , lives and will live and you can quote me on that !
+Ricardo Gerin I will keep saying it listen to Low's mini masterpiece from 2015. same vibe as this music in many ways "the innocents" is chilling (think of the Paris deaths) and beautiful IMO and not even the best track on the album !
So, just how far away is California? Maybe someday, I can fly across the ocean just like Hope, and go to California. But it's so, so, so far away. I hope I make it.
Just recently stumbled across MS and Slowdive. I thought they were relatively new bands. Boy was I wrong. Timeless voices that don't age. Very few artists can say that. Very few.
What an amazing song! I played this entire album traveling from California to the Grand Canyon. When this song came on, it totally fit the mood. Now every time I listen to this song, I think of those amazing scenic views.
I played So tonight that I may see and Among my swan constantly in 1999 while spending 6 weeks driving around the States - I'm totally with you on this!
Brilliant! I love artists who have their own sound and are instantly recognizable. The guitar in some of these songs are Zeppelin-esque, and go beautifully with Hope's voice.
Very few musicians can have such a complete effect on my emotions - instantly upon hearing their music - the way mazzy star always has been able to. Songs like this one end up meaning so much on so many levels - hauntingly beautiful .
Late Sunday evening music with the lights and telly off, candles lit and lying on the settee, eyes closed... I love Mazzy Star's music and was introduced to it many years ago by a very good friend of mine. I thank him hugely for this.
I listen to old Mazzy Star music and i asked myself “when will the new album be released”. Then i realize, David’s music surpass the time. It is eternal. It is profound. You do not need anything else. Just listen to his music clamly. So timeless
My "beastie" friends loved her sooo berry much in high school... It was too mellow, low vibe for me to appreciate back then... She's an incredible force of nature though.... LOVE
Well, David Roback is one of my all time favorite guitarist and song writers. I know I will meet him someday. I am so sad beyond comprehension that David and Keith both died from cancer since this video was made. It has got to be so hard on sweet Hope. Those two were her first mentors. When they were jamming in a little house by the sea and in came Hope ( skipping school). Not only did Dave help her with her shyness but these two wonderful musicians wrote and pushed it. Thank goodness Suki is here with Hope. They were Opal before Mazzy Star. R.I.P dear souls.
damn- interesting but sad to know the story of such great talent, the whole crew's journey, fallen in love with their sound, it goes beyond the song the lyric the music the energy they transmit through their magic is beyond words but one does feel it
You're just looking at it completely the wrong way. Be thankful the evil music industry has not made Mazzy Star mainstream worldwide and be happy in the knowledge that they're real music lovers best kept secret.
They used to. But the western civilization has derailed. We are full on degenerating. You can not possibly deny that we are degenerating if you look at todays pop rap songs and compare them to what used to be popular music, mazzy star for example. And this is just the beginning. Imagine what things will be like in a couple of decades if this doesn't stop. Weimar Republic ladies and gentlemen.
I'm so glad they made another album, Hope sounds as ethereal as always. she still looks so beautiful too. I've missed Mazzy Star, I hope they continue to record other albums, and not go away again.
+joão inácio da silva I would add Low's music to that list. Listen to "the innocents" from 2015. One of the great tracks of any era IMO and it is not even the best track on the album !

Being from CA having left now in GA it's just beautiful and perfect. Hope you are perfect, thank you. All of you were great. Thank you all for being a part of my life.
Just moved to N Carolina from California , myself. I always loved this song. having just listened to it for first time in a year or so, it reduced me to tears .
Finally got to see Mazzy Star live! One of two of my all time favorite bands! Nirvana the other but sadly never got to see them, n I lived in Seattle when the city became the place to be
It's sad that all of the original male members (David Roback, Keith Mitchell and William Cooper) of Mazzy Star have passed on. Now, Hope Sandoval and Suki Ewers are the only members of the original Mazzy Star line-up who are still playing as part of Mazzy Star. Jill Emery is still alive, but has long moved on to other musical acts.
Mazzy came back with some awesome music now that music in general has gotten very good again! .. Fade into you was released in 1994 and soon after Music died for a while. Now we have SO many good bands again, like in the early 90s (arcade fire, grizzly bear, of monsters and men, etc) .. Welcome back Mazzy :) This is awesome!
Hope’s voice is a voice that tells you that everything is going to be ok, but disturbs you at the same time. It’s beautiful.
Yes its disturbing but itss not a strange distubing ive gotten to sound like her singing fade into you
Well said. Her voice is angelic and haunting. Her humanity just gets you down deep. So painfully beautiful.
🎉🎉👏👏👏💝
Like mountains falling into water.

She still sounds like she's in her 20s too
They don´t "capture", is in their essence.
It feels good to see that somethings don't change.
I believe some of the material on this album actually was recorded in the 90's. Not sure which tracks, but apparently much of it has been sitting in vaults for some time.
And then see them move back in, because nobody can afford to move out at age 20 anymore.
I have always loved this band. The hauntingly mellow sound takes you far away. So good.
You were taken away way too early, Mr. Roback. You and Hope's music will be a lasting legacy to what you contributed to the music world 🙂
A timeless masterpiece. Somehow captures what can't be captured.
These two were masters at creating a melancholy, ethereal mood employing only the simplest of forms. This is just achingly beautiful.
Well said 👍
If you remember this Masterpiece song you are not old you are high quality vintage. 💞👌😊👍
She sounds EXACTLY the same as on the first albums, unbelievable! Amazing single, I love it. I love Mazzy Star.

I'm almost at a loss for words for how beautiful this song is.
I'm born 1980 and I've never heard of Mazzy Star or Hope Sandoval until 2015. What a shame. I just love all the music they've created, it's timeless.
oh man SMH super shame. what where u listening too?
+Liam Jeremiah Back then, Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Genesis and various other bands. Incredible I missed MS.
Hope was Kurt Cobain's favorite female artist that was well known back then:)

Luke Lemire "Oh by the way, which ones pink?" Lyrics in Have a cigar by Floyd
The most beautiful singing voice we've ever had.

She's definitely in the conversation with the all time greats. I could listen to her sing all day
I’ve seen her live, her voice is even more lush and golden than on TH-cam.
Some of Hope's songs bring tears to my eyes they're so beautiful.
I'm so proud of her for not turning out like Madonna where you follow along with the generation and change the beauty of the old style she has . just love it . always will .
There is nothing to compare here, Madonna target was always to be in the spot light, Hope prefer to perform in the dark, when no one can see her.

Mazzy Stars music has the incredible ability to capture 100% of my attention. It's like seeing strange lights in the sky that can't be explained or understood. In that moment nothing else matters.
That is probably the best way to explain it. I am mesmerized by Hope's voice and D. Roback's guitar.
