Very few people make Big Finish reviews on TH-cam. Even fewer are good at it. Mr Bagful here is one of the few good and manages to be entertaining at the same time, and I think that's neat and dandy.
Given your thoughts on the idea of The Time War, I’d really recommend Faction Paradox, a DW Spin-Off about The War In Heaven. (Basically the idea of NuWho’s Time-War before NuWho did it), Book of The War specifically. It’s basically written in the style of a guidebook about The War. (Though due to IP reasons, they have to give different names for stuff. Time-Lords=Great Houses, Gallifrey=Homeworld, Tardis=Timeship, Yssgaroth=Great Vampire. Etc, etc) It takes a really creative and detailed stance on what that war would be like while still leaving enough mystery for you to dream and wonder about what they don’t mention. Honestly wish BF cribbed some ideas from FP, all very unique and high-concept. The Physical Book itself is impossible to find for a reasonable price but PDFs are easily available on the web.
Stu, do you plan on covering more 8th doctor stories in the future? This was 2 years ago... I'm gonna miss your commentary as I continue to listen to the 8th's adventures.
Sounds half-decent, anyway. Have you experienced the Time War as depicted in the Virgin novels, and Lawrence Miles' subsequent work? I started on these in the mid 00s and was amazed by how much more imaginative they seemed than the television series. The war being so inexplicable that nobody can say who "they", the enemy are, because they are basically a different kind of history rewriting ours. The forced-regen shocktroops, which were basically timelords regenerating into Lovecraftian monsters. Best Time War audio to date: Magic Bullet Productions "True History of Faction Paradox." Truly astonishing 4th-dimensional peripheral conflict between rogue time lords and Sutekh, who has IMO never been more dangerous and chilling. It still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
If the War in Heaven is canon then the Time Lords just aren’t lucky, they leave one war across time and space that wiped them out only to fall into another war across time and space that wipe them out

A few things Stuart. First off, I really enjoy your Big Finish reviews. Adding the cartoons is definitely much more engaging and viewable than just someone sitting in their room talking. Plus your narrations are engaging and very watchable. Second, now that some time has passed, do you have any plans to continue this series and cover Ravenous, Stranded and the rest of the Eighth Doctor Time War stuff? I've gotten around to it yet, but I hear that Time War 4 is especially high concept. There's also the Further Adventures of Lucie Miller (that falls between Series 1 and 2 of the EDAs) and the new Charley/Eight boxset "The Further Adventuress". Eight is one of my favorite Doctors and I'd love to see more of these. Finally, have you gotten into the Gallifrey series from Big Finish (www.bigfinish.com/ranges/v/gallifrey). It features Romana II, Leela and K-9s battle political intrigue on Gallifrey after Zagreus and that eventually leads into its own Time War series. It's really good and worth the cheap download price for the early seasons. Anyway, love the great videos, keep it up.

That was the biggest let down about the 50th anniversary tv episode for me: I never imagined the Time War to be fought in body armour and with guns. Since Season 1 I imagined it to be super psychedelic. I definitely can live well with cheapish metaphors like "time trenches", but don't make it literal trenches please. Slightly unrelated: the one thing that Moffat impressed me most with during his whole run were the Hand Mines. And those would fit so much better in the Time War than where they were used.
I can not even begin to tell you my disappointment when I found out that The Nightmare Child wasn't some sort of eldritch beast of unspeakable dimensional horror but instead a big Dalek weapon.

Hi... Long time viewer... First time commenter... I've not actually listened to this yet, but I have listened the first two volumes of The War Doctor... And the first volume of The War Master. I was actually pretty pleasantly surprised by some of the concepts thrown up by both... Especially "The Neverwhen" in volume two of The War Doctor. Where The Doctor is tricked to going to a planet where a "front lines" battle is taking place in a zone totally screwed by concept warping temporal weaponry.
I think its safe to say that The Moff closed the book on the whole Time War stuff after he retconned Gallifrey to have survived the Time War and thus clearing The Doctor of his angsty ramblings of "I am the Last of the Time Lords, The Bringer of Darkness" speeches that the Tennant era was filled with. And given musings of what little we know about what Captain Chibbers has in store I'm under the impression that Chibnall wants a more optimistic show compared to the vague attempt at "This Doctor is darker and edgier guys" that The Moff fumbled with for Capaldi's run.
I think my real issue with the Conscript is that it simply makes elements of Time Lord society feel a bit too domestic and Earth like. Training for the Time War is a given, but it just so happens to resemble the training of the armed forces an audience has seen in countless movies and TV shows? Heck change some details and the story could easily take place on a future Earth colony preparing for a war. I know at this point making Gallifreyan related elements feel more alien like is a bit of a fool's errand in some respects, but up to this point the box set had succeeded in making the Time War resembling something on the edge of our understanding of traditional conflict.
Exactly. As someone who has done his fair share of military service, as much as I enjoy the Doctor pissing on the system, I really have no interest in listening to a full audio story of... well, that.
I think the conscript, although not original, does a great service in serving as a great introduction to Cardinal Ollistra, and Tamisan. Excellent video.

I've not listened to 8 Time War yet, but from the brief non-spoiler overall thoughts bit at the end really captures my feelings on the Time War media so far. There are some stories that are awesome and actually make the Time War feel like something so horrible that the Doctor doesn't want to take part in it. But others just feel like generic space war stories, which is not right. I can understand why in some cases, the BBC Book EDAs which deal with another Time War aren't very accessible, and Big Finish probably want to allow NuWho fans to be able to jump in wherever. Also, the BBC probably have more input with the Time War stuff, so maybe are influencing that. Overall, to make the Time War better, it might be good to take a look at what has gone before, take inspiration from that, maybe ask some of the writers with the more crazy ideas to return to write for this Time War. Perhaps even link the Time War too the other Time War. Just take crazy stuff and make it more crazy.

Overall this was a good set I am looking forward to Volume 2 with the Twelve, they set a high bar with the War Master and Gallifrey. I agree with the concern that they oversaturate us with Time War Material losing that mysterious element.
I really like the book. Its very bleak grinding and depressing and its got a good emotional hook. If I'm ever watching or reading a war story I like them brooding desolate and introspective
My main criticism of the boxset is that I am not brought into the relationship between the Doctor and Bliss at all. Which is a shame as I have nothing against the actress. But the Doctor was hardly with Bliss in the first story then was off screen (off mic?) from the group for a good chunk of story two and completely separated from the group for the majority of The Conscript. Whilst most of the stories were good - The Conscript being a highlight - I’m not as greatly invested in the boxset’s future as I would like to be. If Bliss was ditched all together at the end of the boxset, I doubt I would of noticed. Even when Molly was abrasive in Dark Eyes 1, I was still invested in her to an extent by the end of the boxset. I love McGann, I like certain aspects but I need something to grip me in Time War 2 to really hook me into this story.
I can’t really blame it for behind basic as it’s boxset 1.. Of course it’s gonna slowly easy people in but with epic boxsets like “Gallifrey Time War” and “The War Master” Time War 2 better pull it out of the bag

I'm still a little unconvinced about the Time War Boxsets (Save for the War Master stuff because Derek Jacobi is fantastic!) I mean, yeah I get it that they kinda have to show the militaristic nature of the Time War seeing as that's what was shown onscreen in Day of the Doctor and partial reflection into the Ninth Doctor's demeanor on the show, but I just despise the idea of the Time War being little more than Star Wars except with Daleks and rudimentary Time Travel elements. Hell I still dislike the idea that it was the Daleks themselves that were responsible for the Time War but that's a different story. While Echoes of War is tempting, I can't say that I'm very impressed with Big Finish's output for their Time War stuff so far (and it pains me to say that since I'm usually pretty onboard with a lot of stuff Big Finish produces) Oh and one other thing... Stubagful, you'd damn well better get your ass to writing that Doctor Who Coming Soon story or else I'm coming to break that little leggy your loansharks had missed.

Popo Bawa The War was an entirely different event from the Time War.
The difference is Faction Paradox are a genuine threat. Daleks aren't.

Something I always bring up in conversation about the Time War is that's original name was the Last Great Time War i.e. their has been more than one.

Jamie Keys neverwhen is by far the best story of the John Hurt Run. It has the Star Wars massive battle with time binding shit.
You should review the John Hurt one with Daleks v timelords where they keep evolving and devolving in a never ending hell.
Really hope Chibnall doesn't add on to the time war.
