That first half of Beneath the Viscoid with the Master pretending to be the Doctor is such a great character piece. Not only is it him privately taking the mick out of his caricatured idea of what the Doctor is, Jacobi so perfectly executes the Master's gradual inability to keep the mask up as the disinterest in the planet's tragedies/problems becomes more and more obvious. Him actually yawning after hearing about the death of a husband is a little moment but encapsulates his view on the pain of everyone else in the universe so well (and is darkly funny to boot).
DandyShadowYT audio by its very nature has to be more tightly written than visual storytelling. Since it's literally language and the performance of it, poor writing is far more noticeable.

One of the best boxsets that Big Finish has ever put out (which is REALLY saying something), Derek Jacobi's Master was already a favourite of mine even with so little screentime, but this fleshed him out so satisfyingly before leading nicely into "Utopia" at the end, so I'm very much looking forward to the next three volumes that will (presumably) focus on his earlier exploits prior to this one, and yes "The Sky Man" left me shaken and with brutal imagery in my head as well XD
I actually met one of Big Finish's artists at a convention last year and saw him at the same convention this year, and he told me that these War Master stories were originally gonna be stories for the War Doctor, but of course with John Hurt sadly passing they decided to give them to Derek Jacobi.
Brendan McCabe from what we've been told by characters that knew about the time war, the war doctor was a bit of a monster at times and the when do meet him in the 50th special, he only really cares about ending the war. Which seems to be the masters goal, but big finish makes it for selfish reasons.
I don't know who told you that, but they're wrong. This was commissioned before John Hurt's passing and was conceived entirely as a platform for the Master... Sorry.
I just finished the set myself. I absolutely loved it! I understand your unease, but I hope this set will finally convince you to cover the War Doctor series (which I still understand if you don't)
Big Finish have really utilised Jacobi's Master. I mean, really utilised him. He's appeared in three boxsets (War Master 1, Gallifrey:TW, UNIT:6) already, and is going to be appearing in four more (War Master 2-4, River 5). And that is just what we know about. If I swear I'm gonna be skint at the rate Big Finish put out stuff I want.
Anyway, my favourite moment of this boxset was in the Heavenly Paradigm. [SPOILERS BELOW] I simply LOVE the fact that the Heavenly Paradigm, which the Master believed could end the war... didn't work. It actually made things worse. I really like this, cause it gives you the sense that the Time War can't just end with a Deus Ex Machina plot device (though, in the TV series, that isn't the case, cause the War can be ended by just having the Doctors fly their TARDISes a bunch and say catchphrases. What happened to "The War became hell"?).

It was a great set. One of my favourite things about it !!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Is when you listen to the extras, and the guy playing the companion (who has only basic knowledge of the Who Mythology) starts out talking about what a caring relationship he and the Master have, and just being floored when he found out how nasty he could be in the later extras.
It was a great boxset and Jacobi did not disapoint. Truly brilliant and some great stories which questions the morality of the Master as you view him from a different point of view as the protagonist.

I wouldn't have had the master working with the daleks, but would have given him the moment. Play on the idea of the master being kinda the good guy and wanting the war to end and have him too scared to do it and run to the end of the universe scared

Holy shit. I was very skeptical of the NuWho Big Finish spinoffs but this one sounds like it’s worth it. This is exactly what I’d want a Master-as-villain-protagonist series to be. It’s almost a Valeyard series.
I saw someone on twitter described them as “tie in novels” which I think sums up them greatly. There are some gems in there but they are more stand alone things Know id wait until there is a sale or you buy them as bundles
If the time was child means that all rip-offs of Doctor Who are now cannon, then that means scream of the shalka has an incredibly early version of the doctor facing off against either the war master, or some other incarnation of the master, who must just think that he's some random incarnation of the doctor who he never met, like the War, 9th, or 11th Doctor or something. (Either that, or he's after the Spy Master.)
Since Day of the Doctor introduced the concept of Timelords being able to regenerate back into/look like a previous incarnation, The Master needs to regenerate back into Derek Jacobi.

I’d love to see this Master on screen again but I think it would be best that we see him in his proper place in the timeline. The concept of timelords turning into their past regenerations was a poor one. It would essentially cause the show to turn in on itself trying to recapture something it had rather than trying to built what it should be becoming. It would make Doctor Who just as tired and dull as Star Trek has become since they’ve refused to move the series forward.
My take on the Master in series 3 is that RTD should have just given The Master his TARDIS, let the Jacobi/War Master escape in it and then do the series finale with him. I think The War Master would have also been a really good contrast to the Tenth Doctor. The more classic who older demeanor Vs younger modern and as someone who only recently escaped the time war Vs someone who saw it end and had regenerated twice. Then have Jacobi regenerate into Simms in the finale and escape in his TARDIS to cause chaos in the Universe (off screen). Then he could make a normal appearance in series four. Still the past is the past. I am happy that the beast of an actor reprised the role for Big Finish. Now I just need to find some money and learn how to get into Big Finish.
I want Big finish to do a time war story with the two time war masters (jakob and the asian child), in where both masters are trying to do something evil to a planet or something, without knowing that each other are there; tripping each other up.
I'd rather have a story where McQueen regenerates into Jacobi. Then have the child Master be a result of a Dalek weapon or timeline that was wiped from existence or something.

As a Master fanboy, I've been looking forward to this. This entire boxset was gold. The Heavenly Paradigm is one of my favourite Doctor who stories of all time. While I loved John Simm, Jacobi is the best Master since Delgado. He's a Master deceiver, capable of fooling even the audience that he's a kind, sweet old man. He could act as your best friend for decades and decide to murder you in a hearts' beat.
Spoilers The people, including Cole's love interest, become Cyberman-like creatures (using suits that Cole created in order to keep them alive) that blame the rest of creation for what happened to them, and spread across space murdering everyone they meet and burning any planet they land on.
In The Sky Man story I often wondered if the people on the farm planet were poisoned by the Master's methods of growing wine. He planned to use Cole to power the Paradox machine and he wouldn't leave that to chance. Perhaps he poisoned the people knowing what Cole would do.
Couldn't have been him, you can't poison an entire planet from a single water supply near a winery that quickly(well maybe he could, but it's much easier for him to wait until destiny catches up with this one of sixteen doomed planets).
It "could" have still been written into the Day of the Doctor. If the only time War met the War Master was due to the moment messing with both their time streams. Seeing as War remembers none of Day of the Doctor anyway. I'm still somewhat disappointed Day of the Doctor itself didn't include the 8th Doctor and War Master (still better than the five doctors though).

If the War Master just hit Skaro with the Heavenly Paradigm the Time War would of never happened. But because he is a massive d**k head, he went too far.
Yeah, I'm surprised he decided to just go vague and tell the Paradigm to create a better universe (although I'm probably missing context because I haven't listened to it) rather than something like making the Time Lords - or himself - unrivalled for the entire length of the Universe and the Web of Time. Or even just use it to make the Doctor decide that he had the right to destroy the Daleks during Genesis.
Dude, it's a 20th Anniversary celebration of them lasting so long thanks in large part to the Doctor Who fandom. Most audio drama/ radio production teams don't get a chance to last this long, so I think they're allowed to pat themselves on the back. Don't be a douche.

How are Big Finish so good? They nail most things. They even got Class right. Class! And I’ve heard good things about the 11th Doctor Adventures.
I hate class, it should have never existed but even I have to admit the big finish version is better than the tv show.
They aren't always (ie Dark Husband, Churchhill Years), but they hit more often than they miss by a large margin.

As a Master fanboy, I've been looking forward to this. This entire boxset was gold. The Heavenly Paradigm is one of my favourite Doctor who stories of all time. While I loved John Simm, Jacobi is the best Master since Delgado. He's a Master
deceiver, capable of fooling even the audience that he's a kind, sweet old man. He could act as your best friend for decades and decide to murder you in a hearts' beat.

The people, including Cole's love interest, become Cyberman-like creatures (using suits that Cole created in order to keep them alive) that blame the rest of creation for what happened to them, and spread across space murdering everyone they meet and burning any planet they land on.

In The Sky Man story I often wondered if the people on the farm planet were poisoned by the Master's methods of growing wine. He planned to use Cole to power the Paradox machine and he wouldn't leave that to chance. Perhaps he poisoned the people knowing what Cole would do.
Couldn't have been him, you can't poison an entire planet from a single water supply near a winery that quickly(well maybe he could, but it's much easier for him to wait until destiny catches up with this one of sixteen doomed planets).
Michael Berry I mean they stated that the poisoning was temporal decay. Not something that wine could cause.
I just realized 10 did not recognize YANA as the Master meaning he War and 9 never met War Master at all
He actually did meet the 8th Doctor on a few occasions, but that usually involved a dosage of classic "8 gets amnesia".

It "could" have still been written into the Day of the Doctor. If the only time War met the War Master was due to the moment messing with both their time streams. Seeing as War remembers none of Day of the Doctor anyway. I'm still somewhat disappointed Day of the Doctor itself didn't include the 8th Doctor and War Master (still better than the five doctors though).

If the War Master just hit Skaro with the Heavenly Paradigm the Time War would of never happened. But because he is a massive d**k head, he went too far.
Yeah, I'm surprised he decided to just go vague and tell the Paradigm to create a better universe (although I'm probably missing context because I haven't listened to it) rather than something like making the Time Lords - or himself - unrivalled for the entire length of the Universe and the Web of Time. Or even just use it to make the Doctor decide that he had the right to destroy the Daleks during Genesis.
