You could never really nail Bowie to a genre. He transcended all of it. He was jazz, rock, pop, funk, progressive, etc. He did collaborations with Queen and Bing Crosby. He was in Labyrinth. He did his own thing outside of the norm and it was all brilliant.
If you have not heard "Ashes to Ashes," which is a follow up to the story that he wrote 10 years later, it's a must. It is an amazing song, and the video is fantastic.

One of the saddest songs ever. Yes, you feel the isolation as the astronaut dies alone in space. Between Bowie's voice and the lyrics the song tells such a tragic story. Great and intelligent reaction video.
I had the amazing good fortune to see Bowie live in concert twice. He was the single most charismatic person I have ever seen live. I would put Peter Gabriel and Floor Jansen just behind Bowie. I would imagine that Freddie Mercury would be at the top, but sadly was never able to see him live.
I bought my first record in London in 1960 and first heard this, on its initial release in 1968. This video is 1972. That mellotron note is still my favourite note in any son of all time and comes from one of The "Big 3" (The other 2 being Keith Emerson and Jon Lord:All English) Greatest World Organ Players: Rick Wakeman, later of "YES" who was the session player and the ONLY person who mastered the new mellotron and he kept getting the £6 Recording Session Fee as he would not reveal the secret to the inquisitive Engineers at the time:). HEROES-LIVE IN BERLIN is for tou and really shows Favid's charisma on stage.

Hi Rachel, this song is not abt space travel but about heroine addiction / overdosing.. It uses the space thing as a metaphore so your instinct abt it feeling sad and isolating was right. Another famous song abt 'space" from that era is Rocket Man by Elton John, who was also battling addiction. Maybe an idea for a reaction? This DB track is from 69, from 70s I would recommend Heroes (official video) and 80's Lets dance.

If you are a Bowie fan, I suggest you check out, even if it's just for you, the concert at Hammersmth Odeon 1973, pure Ziggy who unexpectedly broke up the band Spiders of Mars in a speach just before masterfully performing Rock and Roll suicide, surprising everyone and the band. This is such a classic. I had this song on an 8 track in my car . I had quad speakers and the sound would just start at one speaker the wrap around you. It was very cool. Someone broke into my car and stole my 8 tracks. Well it was the only thing in my car. They left them all on the ground except this one. I was so bummed.
I agree about the sadness and melancholy of the song. If feel that the literal meaning could be that he is overwhelmed with depression when he looks back on our sad, blue planet. Soon after his communications shut down and his spaceship is hurling through space, as he says "tell my wife I love her very much, she knows." I always felt that it sounded like a suicide to me. The thing that strikes me in the video is that he's playing an acoustic guitar. Such an interesting detail in a song with such space age sound.
I think my spaceship knows which way to go is a desperate line and really makes the point of being out there without any hope of making it back. Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do hits differently the second time.

The sequel to Space Oddity was Ashes To Ashes you cannot categorise The Thin White Duke. I love Jean Jeanie, Fame, all early Bowie right up to the 80's. Pink Floyd got Bowie singing live again after his heart attack in 2004. Watch Comfortably Numb with Bowie. Gilmour and Bowie were friends. I love Iman, Bowies wife for keeping him alive but not at his expenses, they were a powerhouse of a family.

Funny how time works, just three years later in 72 it was like yeah, we are going to the moon again, no big deal. The murder of JFK followed just three years later with The Beatles first appearence in the states on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9th, 1964. The world of popular culture changed overnight, they were that important in history, greatest band ever, not even close. RFK would have beat Nixon that year which would means Watergate would have never happened and Ford giving Nixon a full pardon which opened the gates for the minority Republican party which got us to now with that no good fat SOB Trump and his MAGGOT party. Back to Bowie, I loved this guy in HS and then he kinda fell out when that disco craze BS hit in 75 or 76. In the eighties he exploded again with the advent of MTV in 1981 and the release of his "Lets Dance" Lp in 83. His videos were great, very talented guy. One would have thought that there would have been more of an emotional reaction to it all, but everybody was just gobsmacked and emotionally confused about that. This is one of only a couple of popular songs that are a reference to all that. Besides this and "Rocket Man", the only other piece of popular culture that seems to have processed it was the movie "Apollo 13", which came out decades later. In the 70s, kids considered it to be a drug reference, like a lot of other songs, but I think it's much easier to take at face value as being about stress, loneliness, and risk.
The 60s and 70s were an era of exploration in music. The industry was just beginning to pay attention. Now it's mostly corporations owning most of the music catalogues.

Spaceboy doesn't visually snow much on Tom, but we hear him being brought up, and the feeling of being burned out or tired, tied with the possibility of death, so the imagery flashing by might be his final thoughts, and Bowie walking by a wall, very similar to him as Tom in Ashes to Ashes, but much slower and labored, and finally his last visual mention in Black Star.
I'd love to see you react to more Bowie videos! I recommend his last masterpiece video, Lazarus, released just before he died. Bowie has such a visual presence it's hard to go wrong with any of his music videos. The only one I'd warn you about is the Heroes official video, which is compelling but cuts out way too much of the song. You should really watch some of his live performances too! (Btw he wrote all the songs in Labyrinth, no co-writer.)

The video was made for a 2nd release of the song in the early 70's the song was originally released in 1969, the year of the moon landing.

Spaceboy doesn't visually snow much on Tom, but we hear him being brought up, and the feeling of being burned out or tired, tied with the possibility of death, so the imagery flashing by might be his final thoughts, and Bowie walking by a wall, very similar to him as Tom in Ashes to Ashes, but much slower and labored, and finally his last visual mention in Black Star.

I'd love to see you react to more Bowie videos! I recommend his last masterpiece video, Lazarus, released just before he died. Bowie has such a visual presence it's hard to go wrong with any of his music videos. The only one I'd warn you about is the Heroes official video, which is compelling but cuts out way too much of the song. You should really watch some of his live performances too! (Btw he wrote all the songs in Labyrinth, no co-writer.)

A little bit late, but if you want to watch another version of the same song (approved by Bowie himself), look for astronaut Chris Hadfield version recorded aboard the International Space Station, goes really well with the lyrics, when you watch him sing & play guitar without gravity, floating in the station.
