  • This is a pretty model and it's not expensive. So, what's the catch?
    Well, it's not a great crawler, despite live axles, locked diffs, servo on axle and low gearing. But as a trail rig, there's potential.
    Can we make it better? I reckon we may just be able to! Let me show you what I've done with mine...

    For those that are worried by his negative feedback, keep in mind he is coming from a hobbyist perspective. I'm sure it doesn't compare to nice RC cars. But as someone who just bought it as a 1st rc car since I was 12 and just to mess about, this thing is awesome.
    It does what I need it too, it's fun, looks fantastic and so cheap that you won't feel bad damaging it. If you're just casually into RCs, or want to gift it to to someone who's not already into that hobby, I highly recommend it. He's right about it being over sprung and the tyres not providing enough grip though.

      Thanks for the perspective. I tried to be balanced, but inherent bias is difficult to overcome! I appreciate you taking the time, thank you! Glad you're enjoying it 😊

      This is also my first RC. Modded mine. Now my problem is the stock tires is hard and slides a lot and lastly is I still need to buy stainless steel screws coz mine are starting to rust since I drive on the water a lot.
      All in all, this is the best for beginners and casual that just wanna have fun. It's cheaper than the other ones in the market.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're on the right track, I reckon. One trick to help with rust is to get a cotton bud and apply a small amount of light machine oil (sold as 'singer oil' in Australia and maybe elsewhere) on the screw heads. That'll give em lots more life.

    I've got a few WPL models that are on par with MN, I believe and they are what they are. They look good bouncing down the trail and provide smiles for the boys and I. They can't compete with Axial, Traxxas, FMS, etc as far a performance, but they make decent rolling models. I like what you did with this truck. It looks fantastic and it does pretty decent on the trail. Fun little video. Thank you!

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      17g is a measure of the servo's strength. A weak servo in this size is 4-9g. A strong one might be 30-50g. 17g is adequate for the job, but not up to the heavier work it might face with better, grippier tires and the increased rock crawling ability that may bring.
      Waterproof generally suggests o-rings around the screws and spline, a rubber gasket around the servo case seals, maybe dielectric grease under the spine as well (though not in a cheapie like this), etc etc

    Leaf springs without a shackle end will be pretty tough but you got them working! You did a nice job making this look pretty cool. I haven't been able to stay interested in the smaller scales despite attempts with the SCX24 The Injora S4 and S5 compounds seem to be proving themselves as quite capable. Hopefully we see more tires released in those compounds 👍

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Andy. One of my earlier iterations was actually a shackle for the rear piece that allowed a bit of a swing joint under the original screw hole, but it was all too loose. Then I tried a front shackle instead of the sliding piece, but didn't like it without swapping the metal for something else, so I just shrugged and decided the anti-wrap bar was 'good enough' for this level of modding. Maybe I'll get more special with it... but probably not, lol

      Sorry, this one is discontinued by rgt, being nearly 5 years old. It runs the old Gen 7 clone axles, which are notorious for snapping in the cvd joint. It uses Philips head screws throughout, has straight links and a basic design. The 2.2 tires would help cover up some of the design's shortcomings, but overall you'll want to be getting it at a steep discount for it to be worth buying. Is there a second servo (besides the steering one) that performs this speed change inside the differential? Thanks in advance... 😉👍🏻

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you.
      No, the speed change simply limits the maximum throttle signal to 50% on the slow speed, and 100% on the faster speed. It's a way to get more control on difficult terrain, but the problem with it is you're not getting the full voltage to the motor that lower gearing would afford, so it's not an ideal solution. A two speed gearbox would be better but would cost more, so here we are!

      If he's printing with PETG (which famously strings if your settings are off), try PLA. Or, try dehumidifing the PETG for 12 hours before printing. PETG tends to absorb moisture so if the spool has been sitting open to air, you'll get rubbish results on even the best printers. Pla or pla+ for the win.

    (eventhoug 3D printing is getting more accessible, common and easier to use, I don't think one can consider all the 3D printed parts as "0$" upgrades. 😉 I have no computer or 3D printer (would be a couple hundred €€ investment) so I'd have to get them print for me, and that ain't free... 😅 sadly. It totally should. Considering the possibilities it opens in this hobby, I think I may invest in it one day.)

      You're right about not being free, that's fair. There's about $2 in filament in the printed parts. My printers are usually running but yes, equipment cost is a thing too.
      I recommended against the metal bits because if you're seeking performance, this is a difficult model to start with. There are better choices.

      They were expecting this. It's the 4th car they've sent me and I'm honest every time. They'll sell cars from this video for sure - and I'm giving away my design for folks to print. The value is there, IMO. Great looking car, even if it doesn't perform particularly well.
      I do have a few tamiya videos already. There's an RC truck build here too that I really need to finish, but it's a TT 01 rather than one of their scale highway models.

      You don't need to have a 3d printer to get these files - you can ask in a local FB group for someone to print them for you. Many libraries in many countries run a 3d printer for public use, and some areas have friendly maker spaces too. Posting online even on a place like fiverr will get someone printing it for you inexpensively, I'd expect. You have options.
