Emphasis on "pretty much". I have done the full conversion of my Rustler XL-5 to a VXL and there are quite a few more differences than what this video shows. The VXL model includes thick 4mm turnbuckles for the camber links and toe links, a fiberglass tie bar for the front bulkhead, ball bearings in the hubs and steering bellcranks (vs the XL-5's bushings), a stronger servo, a TQi radio system (vs the XL-5's TQ system) and hex hardware (vs the XL-5's philips hardware). These aren't even all the differences but when you add up all the costs, plus the original cost of a Rustler XL-5, you end up spending more money than if you just buy the VXL to begin with.
Zumo Karl he didn’t say for the Traxxas rustler he’s just saying they should of made a 4s esc they have now but when he comment was out from him there wasnt
I have a better motor but replaced the receiver and esc and still cant go the factory distance. It only goes about 10ft then loses signal. I have a short antenna that doesn’t peak out of the car. If i got one that just peaks out of the body, will my range be better?
RustlerRC I know but the bandit is cooler than the rustler. Realistically it's better to buy it with the brushless system and these videos are useless anyway
My traxxas rustler was my first hobby grade rc and still is my favorite i run fhe same esc and moter but different battary and every time i take it out some shing breaks latest was i bent the shock and the drive shaft pops out every 10minutes If anyone can tell me why it keeps breaking please help me because i have only used it for 40hours and i have had the upgrades for a year now
I also had issues with my shock shafts bending and there's a fairly easy fix for it. Not a whole lot of people know this but, Traxxas sells hardened titanium nitride coated shafts as an upgrade for ultra shocks. I installed them in my Rustler ultra shocks and I never had a bent shock shaft ever again. Part numbers: 1664T for the front shock shafts and 2656T for the rear shock shafts Regarding driveshafts, make sure your slipper clutch and suspension are set up appropriately for where you drive. A slipper clutch that is set too stiff will not be able to properly absorb a sudden shock in the driveline and that can cause your driveshafts to pop. Also suspension with too much downtravel causes the driveshafts to sit at really steep angles, making the joints more prone to failure.
Overheating is pretty much the main issue. Although the speed controller does have thermal shut down protection, it does not protect the motor. Higher gearing is also more taxing on your battery, so keep an eye on your battery temp as well when gearing up.
How do we replace the drive shaft with something more durable than part number 1951 and I wish you guys made something like 6851 a I was so excited until I got home and figured out it was for the 4x4
One thing to consider is that depending on what castle system you put in, you may notice your steering feels slower and weaker. What I found is that their lower end ESC's (i.e. sidewinder 3/4) only have a 5 volt output from their BEC compared to 6 volts of the Traxxas ESC's. Their higher end ESC's have better BEC's, some even adjustable. I'm not trying to knock castle, but it's just something to look out for
Is it possible to upgrade a rustler XL-5 with a 28-Tooth and a 48P 83 tooth, with a velineon VXL-3M controller and a 380 motor. Il still use my NiMH battery+ charger. Is this possible??
I would not recommend that setup because the velineon 380 motor is much smaller than the the velineon 3500 (which is a 540 size) and does not produce the torque needed for the weight of a Rustler. The vileneon 380 system is better optimized for smaller vehicles like 1/16th and 1/18th scale.
It depends on the battery. If it's a Traxxas LiPo battery, then yes you do need traxxas LiPo chargers. However, if it's from a different brand, you can use any LiPo battery charger as long as it's capable of charging the number of cells your LiPo battery has. (2s LiPo=7.4 volts, 3s LiPo=11.1 volts).
Derek Silva it takes more power to turn the wheels. Basically it has bad acceleration but good top speed. If your going off-road or bumpy, it will not have enough torque to get up hills, and if you floor it to get up hills, you will really damage the motor. Using the stock gearing gives it great acceleration and torque but bad top speed (around 30 mph)
That combo may not fit because as you increase the size of the spur gear, the motor has to sit further back on its mounting plate and there's only so much room to slide it back without modifying the mounting plate or transmission case
How to go faster... Take out Traxxas electronics and put hobbywing electronics in it... Oh but those plastic axles are not going to last gotta spend $ on metal ones cause Traxxas can't include those on their cars come on it's 2019 your the only ones with hobby grade the are still using plastic axles
For years now my brushless Traxxas Rustler has been one of my most favorite RCs!

This is pretty much a tutorial on how to convert your rustler xl5 into a vxl.
Insert name here that’s exactly what it is lol
I was just looking to play with the gearing to get some more speed. Oh well I guess it will cost $120 to do

@@markoftheus Technically you don't have to get all that. But they definitely want you to spend more money
I got this in my rustler, thank you traxxas!😙
yall should make a 4s esc
godzillawithagun They have but it is very big
Theo usenet in the maxx bout you van beter use a hobbywing set
No, that would be over kill. Remember that it’s not 4wd
Zumo Karl he didn’t say for the Traxxas rustler he’s just saying they should of made a 4s esc they have now but when he comment was out from him there wasnt
Jake Chunasamy oh yes thats true tho
Im gonna upgade my rustler(: Nice vid Traxxas!
🤘
Good video Traxxas 👍🏻
Thank you! 👍
Already got the rustler 2wd now I want a 4wd should’ve got that first

Do a funny video saying "How to go Slower" LOL and If you can try a video on all upgrades on the 1/16 slash 4x4 PLEASE!!! :)
I swapped mine with a hoss motor and esc it goes like 70mph now with upgraded Pinon gears and the hex on the axal keeps stripping my wheels
Can I just buy the brushless motor and put it in my car? Or do I need to buy the new esc also?
If it already has a brushless ESC, it might work, but if it's just an xl5 ESC than no
I need this video for the bandit!
The bandit is the same as the rustler

What is the top speed With this gearing
Can you guys plz do an upgrade video on the slash 4x4
Good Idea! 👍
Traxxas Support please do!
Why are we recommended not to use upgraded gearing for off road use? Will it cause other damage, apart from overheating?
Overheating is pretty much the main issue. Although the speed controller does have thermal shut down protection, it does not protect the motor. Higher gearing is also more taxing on your battery, so keep an eye on your battery temp as well when gearing up.
What’s the best combo for max speed. Like th spinion gear ect
Nice one!
I would like to know how could I upgrade my rustler 4x4 in to a Vxl 3s
The Vxl brushless combo used in this video also works for the rustler 4x4 and it bolts into the factory motor and speed controller location.
I love my rustler...
How do we replace the drive shaft with something more durable than part number 1951 and I wish you guys made something like 6851 a I was so excited until I got home and figured out it was for the 4x4
I like the slash 4x4 rear driveshafts as an inexpensive upgrade, part 6852X. They're bigger with more material.
This costs even more than the car 😂
Lol
Man be driving a potato 😂
Sorry I'm late. But what if I use the speed gearing on offroad. Will I damage something?
Ibrahim Farrukh the motor and esc will probably overheat
Yea heats up quicker
Better off putting a Castle creation 💯%

What happened to the stampede video?
Here it is: th-cam.com/video/4-fKQs4O-3A/w-d-xo.html
Is it possible to take the brushless motor from a bandit and put it in the brushed rustler?
Yes, the motor will fit but you also have to transfer the ESC. You might also have to change the gearing since the Rustler uses bigger tires.
Video with e revo pleaseee

Is this also for the rustler xl-5 thats cost 229 euro i have that one can i do this upgrades for my rustler or is this only for the vxl ?
You can do these mods for either and in the video they use the xl-5 version
This works with any electric rustler that is 2wd.
Should you oil the gearbox from the motor?
It’s not required but if you want to you can just do get any on the slipper clutch system
Not necessary. The pinion and spur are made to run dry. The internal gears of the gearbox just need a coating of grease every once in a while.
Why should the new gearing only be used on flat ground?

how much would all this cost
more than the whole car just buy a vxl in the first place
Now do 4s
What if I add a 28 tooth pinion gear with a 90 tooth spur gear to my rustler

Don’t actually buy the genuine metal axles they suck because they still break
So what's the max speed it can go to ?
70mph
Always drive downhill!
Or just buy a Vxl in the first place🙄
