Traxxas Rustler XL-5 Cheap Brushless Upgrade, Go Faster For Less Review

- Today I will review this $40 ESC Brushles Motor Combo. Can I make the brushless motor upgrade for cheap? You can get one here:ebay.us/AjFN06 Will this make my Traxxas Rustler XL-5 2wd faster or will it go up in smoke? We will see in this Rustler XL5 2wd Budget Brushless Upgrade / Go faster for less review video. Let me know in the comment below if you have tried one of these brushless systems or what you think about this going brushless motor upgrade. This system includes a 60a ESC and a brushless 3900kv motor capable of running on 2s and 3s. This looks like a Goolrc or Ocday sytem.
I have been running a Goolrc 60a 3500kv 3650 in my stampede XL5 for 2 yrs, a few puddles, wet grass, only on 2s, I check temps and never have had any problems with it in 2 yrs. I believe it cost around $50 and I have no complaints, it has served me well. I believe the biggest mistake most make with these cheaper systems is that the motor kv is too high for their application, or too over geared, I did a lot of studying before I purchased mine and I see no real reason to over kv or over gear my Stampede, and I have had great luck. I have a Hobbywing 10BL50 waiting in case the Goolrc esc ever failed, have not had to use it yet. Best advice I can see is to keep temps checked, no overgearing, and proper use of kv, should have very little problems with those cheaper brushless systems, I would recommend them as long as they are applied and run properly, I believe they are as good as anything else, hope this helps some who may be interested in maybe purchasing one in the future. Good day to all.
Same here, I've had mine for three years and run it on 3s. Never had any issues and it's been run through sand, water mud etc. Incredible value for money. 👍
Can you share the link? Looking to upgraded my Rustler 2wd with a little bit more power.
Chris Pimentel Look on eBay at Gool Rc brushless system, that is where I purchased the one I have. If you are applying the system to a 2wd, I would stay between 3900 and 3500 kv 3650 sized motor and gear accordingly. If running in 4wd, I would go with 3300 kv down to 3000 kv in motor size, however for 4wd applications I like a 3660 motor better, although your ESC should be at 60a or higher to run that setup. Good luck, hope that helps.
@@jackanapes6676 Question why is not a good idea to use higher kv example 4370k?
@@lospimens I believe that when you run a high kv for example 4000 kv and up, mostly those applications are for usually 2S Lipo only, and from what I have researched those motors of higher kv tend to be used in road cars, for example such as a Traxxas 4 tech, and cars of that sort. For off road such as a rustler, it seems that any number into the 4000 kv and above seems very steep for off road use. My suggestion for the Rustler would be a 3500 kv motor, as there is then much area for gearing as you can start with your stock gearing, then can gear up if needed. After you find a good ground for gearing, you can then check temperatures, to make sure that the temps are not too high. Temps above 140 deg, seems a bit too high, if you are running in that area or below the combination should be around a useful range. Good luck, and I hope this info is useful for you.
You just sold me on the 2wd Traxxas Rustler XL5! My soon to be 10yr old son will love it! Upgrade $40 BL system when he's ready! Thanks man 🤙🏾
Got this exact motor and it's a great option for cheap
That's no joke for 40 bucks! Can't believe how cheap brushless systems and lipo batteries have become. I remember just 12-15 years ago when one 2s lipo would set you back $80-$100, and that was just a 5000mah 25C pack! A 1/10 brushless setup would run you $200+ back then! 🤯
I know, I couldn't believe the performance. I've been running it for about a week and it surprises me everytime I drag it out.
You have to remember it will not last long I have bought 3 and only 1 worked for a week it’s better to buy castle or traxxas they are way better and have better protection features
I've been running this one a week with no issues....yet. That's why I recommend running 3s sparingly only. We shall see I guess, that's why I bought it to put it to the test.
I’ve bought one of those brushless systems, it works great but must have the program card. Great video!
Do you need a program card? Just about to pick one up surpass hobby 3650 60a 3900Kv for my slash 2wd don’t need any too advance features
I played with programming without card, it has full power forward and hard brake. About 50% in reverse. About the best I could do without a card.
Bro, I subbed just for the honesty in that blooper segment. That is so me.
Got the same knockoff type at 3100kv. I got no acceleration but she'll scat. Stock rustler gearing, could I mess with different size to level it out and give it more on takeoff?
Thanks for the sub, oh yeah you could definitely gear it down to level the difference between take off and top speed..
I got a cheap brushless system from China a couple months ago for my Traxxas slash 4x4 1/16 and so far no issues. Sometimes the esc runs a little hot but only if it’s hot outside. Otherwise I’m pretty satisfied with it considering I only paid like 30 bucks for the system. With the extra power though it does tend to flip over and cartwheel if you turn really sharp at speed.
Good stuff man! Love it when a budget purchase pays off like that. I would recommend putting good bearings in the wheels if you haven't already.
Also... Try loosening the slipper clutch a tad to keep the wheelies in check.
The motor is freaking insane for the price
Do yk where I can find it
Dudee!! I've testing this combo around 3 months in my Slash and is a monster compared to the old xl-5, i running in 23/86 2s lippo and i want run in 25/83 whit 24 or 25 whit 83 spur and 3s!
You should put it up vs the traxxas brushless version.
I just might put that on my videos to do list....🤔
Father Family Fun yes please!!!
Gotta say, I’m impressed with Goul, It is waterproof if you unplug the fan, or chuck the fan & get a different one. You can get a lot of of it on 2s, definitely an upgrade for power for cheap. Be sure to get the Program Card to,, it helps
I changed the gearing from 18 on the motor to 22 and it still wheelies like crazy .Im switching to my 2s lippo to tame it down a little from 3s.
I know it makes me laugh how strong it is. I've been driving mine on 2s and it is still a handful.
Thats my next question.... what about the gearing? nEED i to upgrade to a slipper clutch? or something els. Wil the stock
gear hold on the big power upgrade?
You don't have to change the gearing but it will be geared low with all that power.
Wow thanks for the vid! It’s great to know how much money you can save!
Hate to be that guy but which motor from the link did you get or could it just be any 3900kv brushless combo?
Here you go... ebay.us/5Xph6p Sorry for the late response we were camping ...
I have the same rustler my go 35 but I want it to go faster so I'm going to try out this motor u got now. Could u tell me were u got your adapters from I have other batteries can't use them can't find traxxas adapters good video
Ebay...
So I got this exact setup today and it works but only with nimh battery. When I try a 2s or 3s I get nothing but the fan spinning real fast...
That's weird, I'd send it back for a replacement....
I have this set up with a non lipo battery and the fan spins but nothing else works. The truck is not responding to the controller. I have the stock controller and receiver and the program card to the new set up. What do I do now??? PLEASE HELP
Just added this motor and new trans mitter and esc.Wow1.This thing wheelies at half throttle with bigger pinion gear .I may have to put weight in the front end.
Yeah crazy huh.....Beast Mode
Hey there! Got it looking great! Kool toy…
I was wondering how hard is it to swap out the motors etc.
Very easy, just a remove and replace process. There are a lot of videos showing the process if you want to see what is involved before you purchase one. You'll be surprised how simple it is....thanks for watching and commenting hope you have a great day.
Hi. Great Video Btw I just ordered this system, and I was wondering if I could use the system with a 3000 MAh battery
Yes, you can....
I installed this system with this battery and stock receiver and when I turned it on nothing but the fan comes on. The truck is not responding to the controller. I have a program card with it. What do I do??????????
Holy crap this motor is nuts.I have very little radio control now for some reason with my 27.4 am ghz transmitter .Maybe its too old vs the newer radios.I have a bigger pinion on the motor for speed and with the wheelie bars its flipping like crazy.Should i upgrade to 2.4 for my transmitter for better reception?.
Not sure if it would help, mine glitches sometimes. Like when I try to go backwards, I have to push the trigger twice or it lags a little on take off.
Hi. Thanks for the great video, and I have some questions
Will this system work on a 3300 MAH battery? Or does it require lipo
Should work fine with that battery.
I installed this system with this 3300 mah battery and stock receiver and controller. When I turned it on, only the fan is blowing and the truck is not responding. I have a program card with it... What do i do ????????????????? HELP PLEASE!!!!!! LOL
You should do a speed run of 2s and 3s on that mortor
Working on a update video.....
Stupid question, is the motor just plug and play ? Just plug it in to the Traxxas esc ? Forgive me for asking, I'm new to the rc world.
Bought this motor/esc on eBay and installed it in my sons rustler. It came with same the programmer as you show in your video but all it does is flash the blue Work State light on and off. Won’t program. Wondering if you had any issues with the programmer or if I just got a dud. I had read somewhere that this programmer won’t work with certain esc’s but considering it came with the motor and esc…
Update - the esc stopped working now too. Though a cheap setup, Not impressed.
I'd send it back, we've had ours a year and haven't experienced any problems. I've only run it on 2s except for a handful of times. If you want to spend a little more money but with greater reliability I'd buy a Castle copperhead system.
how fast does it go. Pls make a speed test
Change the pinion and you will get pretty close to the speed on the vileneon system
What’s going on sir. How hard is it to change out the motor?
Switching to ball bearing wheels for my wheelie bar to make it smoother.
Have you seen the video I did on the Integy wheelie bar? It's very smooth.
@@FatherandSonHavingFun no i have not seen it.
niceee!!! what pinion/spur you recommend me for run in my truck? probably 3s battery
25/83
I’ve fried to of those esc’s in wet grass. Both of the motors are still running strong though. They really rip.
True story, these things fly....I don't trust the waterproof claims and your experience confirms that.
The fan is not waterproof
cool video definitely getting one
I bought this and it works great but if I give it full throttle it basically dies and I have to turn it back on is there a solution to this
Do I need to buy anything else, or can I install it with the original gearing right away. Also what battery are you using? (the 2s one)
also what connectors do I need for that battery brand you are using? (for the 2cell)
You can run the same gearing, you may want to change it later though. I'm using Powerhobby 5200 mah 50c but you can use any brand you prefer. You will want to get a adapter more than likely as my new esc takes a Dean's connector. Hope this answered your questions. Thanks for watching and commenting hope you have a great day.
How did you program the stock Rustler XL5 radio controller to the new rsx and motor? Kind of a newbie on this topic and looking for some light on this swap
Used the stock radio and receiver, just plugged the new esc into the slot that the old esc was plugged into. Hope that helps...
I might get this for my two wheel drive stampede.
You know it's worth a shot for the price. I'm going to do a update in a month or so but I'm mostly going to run it on 2s. I think the ESC is the weak link in this system but if you can keep it dry and from overheating it may provide a long service life.
Get ready to upgrade most of your drivetrain.
Yup, the price having fun....
Did you have to use a different controller??? I've got two xl5 rustler's for the kids and there ready for more speed..how's it's holding up??
If ur goin brushless get the tqi system unless they are masters with a remote because the tqi has a build in gyro and can counter steer
No, we used the stock controller. It's still going strong.....
Awesome..
My controller and transmitter is stock and I have installed this system and only the fan turns on.. The truck is not responding to the controller. .. What could be the problem????
Would this be a good fit to upgrade a brushed 2wd Slash? KV of the motor ok?
Yes it would be the vxl slash is 3500 kv so they are very similar.
Will this work on a Losi desert truck 1/10? Also is there a wire for the on and off switch?
Yes, and yes there is a on off switch.
@@FatherandSonHavingFun Alrighty thank you
I cam across a bare rustler chassis and I just got a transmission and I was wondering what screws to get to mount the transmission two the chassis.👍
Not sure , if you have a hobby shop they have a parts list .
Im alittle bummed today I had my Stampede out with this motor and my 5200 3s lippo 50c 11.1 battery geared at 29-78 and I topped out at 46mph.This is not impressive to me .The stock stampede vxl does 65plus mph with 30-83 gearing and a 3s 25c 4000 11.1 lippo.Thats almost 20mph more than my truck .What am I doing wrong ?.I still get alot of wheelies but I think my top end should be higher .My battrey is cool to the touch and motor is below 100 degrees.Does this sound right?.
First of all a Velinion system cost $170 and yours cost considerably less, so it's apples and oranges. Don't get bummed about it. Is your goal to do high speed runs with your Stampede? Traxxas is notorious for giving their RC'S inflated top speeds. You could gear it to exactly what the vxl is and see what happens. To me I think the Stampede struggles with traction with stock tires. I think that's why the Slash beat it in the tug of war. Keep experimenting and keep us informed.
@@FatherandSonHavingFun Yeah the stock tires do suck .I cant get it to wheelie with stock tires but they are not bad for speed runs cause it wont wheelie.
But they are probably spinning losing traction also causing less top speed.
Hi man how much faster is it
Does it work with nimh
Also you can get it on wish for 25$ cad on wish if you find the right one
Yes as long as you have the adapter for the battery.
@@FatherandSonHavingFun ya I’m probably just going to swap with an ic3 or ec3 connector
How fast is it?
Wicked! How's it holding up?
Good, still runs like a scalded dog.
Nice, glad to hear it. I'm dying to upgrade mine. The original esc on these is so annoying to keep calibrated.
Did u change the gears on the Rustler XL 5?
Yes, changed it to Rustler VXL specs....
He’s really about how cheap it frankly I don’t care how much it cost just add it to my upgrades
How has it held up. I hear it can't handle 3s, but maybe reliable on 2s
I run it only on 2s for that exact reason, so far it has been very reliable. Thanks for watching and commenting hope you have a great day.
newbie here do you have any idea where the set button is
Would love to see a 1 mouth update on this
I can do that....I've been running about a week before I made the video just to make sure it was legit.
Hi, any soldering needed for this? Thanks
Newbie here
Nope, just plug and play.
Father Family Fun Thank you.
Is it worth buying a 2 week old stampede 2wd for 250 cad?
Right now with the shortage of RC'S right now.....yes.
How does this setup compare to the traxxas brushless set up?.
I don't trust that it's waterproof and the quality isn't as good but performance wise it's pretty close. I wouldn't run it on 3s very much as I'm not sure if it can take it.
@@FatherandSonHavingFun Thank You for the honest answer. Liked and subbed.
Father Family Fun how is 3s working so far?
I put this set up on my pede and now im having radio range problems .I have the old radio the 27.4ghz I think. How can I fix this.
about how fast did you get it going?
Were can i buy the adapter for the battery. Going to do the sames thing you did
Ebay...
@@FatherandSonHavingFun thanks do you now whats it call sorry am new at this
It's a battery adapter if you use Traxxas batteries it would be Traxxas to Dean's adapter.
Where’s the link?
How is it still holding up?
Should be posting a update video today.
Are the tests with or without the stick gearing
Geared to VXL gearing...
What is the battery you use in this video
Where can I get this system ...
Which esc is it on eBay i dont know which one it is
How do you program the traxxas remote with it
It uses the same receiver you just have to connect the esc to the receiver. Hope that helps thanks for watching.
@FatherFamilyFun I have installed this system and when I plugged it in and turned it on, the only thing that happened is that the fan turns on. The receiver is not rwsponding to the controller. Tbey are the stock traxxas receiver and controller.... What do I do now?????? Please advise.
@@FatherandSonHavingFun Hmmm
@@cnix478 Hmmm that’s what I don’t wanna happen lol
Are you sure you plugged the esc into the right slot in receiver?
Nice!
What gearing are you using?
23/86
What's the adaptor for the battery called
Traxxas to Deans connector
Is it ok to run a NiMh battery with a brushless system?
Yes but you need to take it out of lipo mode on the esc.
Father Family Fun ok thx
@@FatherandSonHavingFun how do you put it into lipo mode
This guy is not responding ... I need to know also how to take out of lipo mode if there is one...
I would make it a four wheel drive so you can have better traction
Rough speed?
How long did it last ?
Still going strong...
will this setup work on a slash 2wd?
Yes it most certainly will, thanks for watching and commenting hope you have a great day.
@@FatherandSonHavingFun bought the setup. I will let you know how it goes...
Sweet, I look forward to hearing about it.
Will it work on a slash?
Yes it will...
Budget Brushless Combo tongue twister
what spur and pinion is in it please
25/83
I didnt recieve a program card with mine too.
Some combos don't come with one.
My esc caught on fire
Damn looks like the link doesn’t have any left
I updated the link. If you want to check it out...
We bought them all I’ve smoked 6 of them
I'm still on my first combo. I only run 3s sparingly...
I have it but it’s not connecting
no installing vid?
It's pretty much a plug and play. Disconnect and reconnect new system. There are plenty of videos of system installs on TH-cam and I didn't want to loose some people, just show the outcome. What did you think of the performance? Thanks for you watching and commenting .
@@FatherandSonHavingFun ok. that sounds good the performance is great for that kind of money keep up the good work!
@@FatherandSonHavingFun can you think of making a comparison of the same products in the stampede and then doing a test vid of what you usually do?like jumps ,speed and tug of war cause I have a stampede but not touched it for 3 years or so and I might make a budget restoration for it, im wanting something to take out the stampede whenever my slash vxl is Broken
Mine didn’t not come with a program card how can I get one ?
Link?
Goodbye tires
Yup...
In the link not their
Link doesnt work
I think that is because they are sold out at the moment. Let me double check though.
