@@djsnowpdx I do, and the 3600 wasn’t better than Intel, so I didn’t swap from a 7980xe @5ghz until the 5950x came out. 3000 series was okay, but not faster than Intel so it wasn’t good.
The 3600 was championed when it first came out as an incredible bang-for-the-buck chip, and these results prove it is still worthy of that title. Incredible.

Definitely worth going for the 5600 if you're looking at new CPU and deciding between the two, but maybe not worth upgrading (yet) if you already have a 3600.
@@vangledosh it is cheaper. 3600x is out of production and has been for a while now. They've already been "thrown off" shelves and the few new ones in stock are now going at a premium. 5600x is currently in the middle of its logistics curve, Cheap to manufacture, high supply, medium demand, lots of stock.
3600x used though is a different story. you can get a 3600x, anywhere from 1/3 of the price to 2/3 of the price compared ot a 5600x depending on used state and condition.

I just love the fact that you can almost put all am4 cpus into any mobo, given the right bios. I am running a 3600X atm and thinking about getting a 5800x3d in a year or so when I feel like upgrading but don’t want to switch platforms. There is still plenty performance for an average gamer like me for a few years to come.
Totally agree! I really think 5800x3d is the way to go especially for people who just got a beast b550/x570 MB
One exception is A520 and B550 boards. Most of these boards will NOT support old CPUs (1000-series, 2000-series, and some 3000-series APUs).
Some do, but not officially. My ASRock A520M-ITX/AC definitely did not work with R7-2700. What's stupid is, 300 and 400 series chipset boards now support ALL AM4 CPUs.
The same R7-2700 worked on ASRock B450M PRO4 R2.0 with the latest BIOS. I just bought one LOL.
At least B550 supports PCIe Gen4 on the main PCIe and m.2 slot. A520 has *absolutely* nothing going for it, as far as I'm concerned.
Yup, for sure! I started this platform with an R3 1200 just to play with the then-new Ryzen architecture; got an R5 1600 when Microcenter started selling them for ~$90; then picked up an R 5 3600X - and every single one of these CPUs has been fantastic, even the 1200, while a bit of a dog being a 4c/4t, it still offered smooth frames(what little frames it had to offer LOL) and consistent performance, had some fun overclocking it on water too.
I too am looking to finish off the evolution of my AM4 system with HOPEFULLY a 5800X3D; if not the 3D, then it's gotta be the 5900X, either one would make for a superb finale.
I am planning on getting an AM5 system sooner than later, might take the same approach and start with the lowest end CPU just to get in cheap so I can start playing with the new platform(I don't think I'm getting in with a $60 motherboard & $100 CPU this time though LOL. I can't be the only one who would gladly trade PCIe 5.0 capability to have more affordably priced motherboards...). However, mid-range CPUs have really been hot on value pretty much since the Ryzen R5 1600 anyway, we'll see. Gonna be exciting to start the new journey, given how awesome of an enthusiast experience AM4 has been!
I went from a 3600 to a 5800X3D on my MSI b450 gaming plus max and it runs amazingly smooth

I went from the 2600 to the 5600 on a MSI B350 Gaming Pro (you need the latest Beta BIOS BTW) and even with 2400 memory, night and day difference, these guys need a medal ! Thanks Steve :)

@@justinpatterson5291 it mainly depends on your GPU not your CPU and what resolution your gaming at if it’s 1440p or 4k there is very little reason to upgrade unless you already have a very high end GPU 3080 or
I would give overclocking the memory a shot. The IMC on the 5600 is much stronger and should have no trouble hitting DDR4 3000 or more with basically any kit.
Any issue with software migration changing bios to tpm? This is what concerns me with the upgrade, on bios b350 just prior to one alllowing tpm (and thus 5xxx cpu's).

Just the video I needed, I've been looking at this upgrade the past two weeks and do it couldn't find any good I info. Hardware Unboxed came through. Looks like I'll hold off on upgrading my 3600 until next gen!
my plan is to skip next gen alltogether as im not planning on GPU upgrade any time soon so ill just wait for the next gen to launch then grab (probably second hand) 5800-ish CPU for a bargain that will last me until my next GPU upgrade
Yeah as a 3600 owner I was happy with these results as well, especially since I just got a GPU upgrade. Going to stick with the 3600 for at least another year and assess options from there
I got the 5600 for a deal over Christmas $130. Solid upgrade from the 3600.
Last week I went from a 2600x to a 5600x on a B550 Tomahawk, and a 2060 to a 6750 XT - very happy!
both are great choices

2000 series cpu don't work on the b550 only 3000 and up
@@tylermunson1886 Didn't think I'd have to explain this but, hey ho... the 2600x wasn't on the B550 Tomahawk - the 2600x was on a X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming. The B550 Tomahawk was part of the whole upgrade along with the Radeon 6750 XT and the 5600x.

Awesome work, as always. Easy for me to say when I haven’t got to do the benching, but locking all 3 CPUs at the same clock speed would be really interesting for an architectural head to head.
I would really like to see this comparison for the 3700X vs 5700/5800X at 1440p and 4k. I expect that 4K would be always GPU limited but it would still be nice to see if the newer CPU provides any improvements.
Thank you for this dataset! I saw the first 1600 v 5600 and was hoping you'd include the 3600 soon. I have a 3600 and can safely say that it's sufficient enough for me, especially since my next eventual upgrade will be an ultra wide 3440x1440 monitor. Maybe afterwards I can pick up a used 5700/5800x in a few years

3600 should still be good for 21:9 UW, you're on the verge of being more GPU limited than CPU limited.
@@Apater6076 yeah the 3600 will be plenty. my upgrade path right now is a new monitor (in 1-2 years) > cpu (3-4 years) > gpu (4+ years, or until my 1080 dies)

I'm planning to replace my RYZEN 5 PRO 2400G to a 5600G, I hope the motherboard can handle this, I have no idea which it is, because it's a Lenovo prebuild. But I'm going to try that anyway. It has the same PCIe 3.0, at that point I'm not concerned. This PC is going to use for music production, it has 32Gb RAM, thanks for the info.

5600 is a cheap upgrade and MMOs tend to be heavier on the CPU. I'd just upgrade and enjoy it for the next few years.
Exactly the kind of video I have been waiting for! As an early 3700x adopter who plays at 1440p, it has been harder than I thought to find consistent and reliable scaling data comparing similarly core configured Ryzen parts from Zen 2 and Zen 3 at resolutions above 1080p, so a huge thanks for making this!
As much as 1080p data makes the most sense for CPU testing, I wish 1440p data for CPU's didn't get as lost in the shuffle as they occasionally do! Excellent work Steve!

@@edhiiya7284 Meh, not really somebody who cares that much about the extra 20% or so performance that offers in games. I approach PC gaming based on what I need and I dont need more performance to enjoy games. It's still a fine CPU.
Thanks for the extensive benchmarks again. I was really curious about zen architecture differences with more entry level/mainstream graphics cards. Looks like even 6600xt benefits from zen3 greatly.

People want to play at 500FPS lol, I am also feeling good about the 3600 I invested in a few years back. Doing pretty well esp. the next upgrades would be 1440p bringing down that margin even further.
I have a 3600 with a 3070 and I honestly get some great performance with all my games at 1440p.
I am satisfied, thank you Steve! I have a 3600 in my HTPC build (weird I know) paired with a RX 570, and I'm looking at getting probably a RTX 3060 when there's a mega deal on it to run some higher end upscaled emulation, so this suggests to me at higher resolutions like 4K, there is a difference but it is fairly small :)

Just recently upgraded from a 3600x to a 5600x (on a Crosshair VI Hero, thanks AMD for making Asus enable it for Ryzen 5000). After selling the 3600x the upgrade ended up costing about €25. Needless to say totally worth it.

yeah hope he does that one next as I've been thinking of upgrading my 2700x to either a 5700x or maybe 5800x. Expecting a nice price cut on those am4 cpus come end of nov and beg of dec with the new am5 stuff launching in sep.
Except for PCiE 4 not much, pretty much same speeds, same cache just a few more PCI lanes which even the 1st gen CPU's haven't gotten maxed out yet. We just don't use all those lanes as no more SLI, no add in cards for most folks and NVME are large enough now that 1 or 2 is perfect. Unless you are making Avengers movies in full CGI you really don't need to go past 2700x with the 5700x being a neat toy to just have. NVME at pcie4 aren't that noticeable for most end users except those in the rendering fields.
Thank you for doing this test. I’ve been thinking about switching my 3600 for a 5600. But looking at your benchmarks, my R5 3600 is still plenty good. Specially the games i play. I also loved how my setup (R5 3600, RX6600XT) was in the benchmarks. A R5 5600 is 150 USD at my local micro center, so if anyone sees this comment in socal, and wants to upgrade to a 5600 for less than 200 USD, now is the time.
So rather than upgrading the 3600 to 5600, I upgraded the 1650super to rtx 3050, is it worth it?

@@johns818 nice bro. But honestly if you can. I would get a rx6700xt or rx6750xt. It’s just a bit more, and you get way better performance. I got a rx6600xt because i have a 600w psu. So the 6600xt was perfect for my build.

Thanks for the video! I've got a 3700x and do a fair amount of work with VM's. For me, I'm going to wait for AM5 to come out and decide whether I'm better off with a 5900x with a (hopeful) price drop, or maybe a system upgrade for DDR5's sort-of-ECC and pass my cpu/mb/ram on to a friend.

It would probably have the 5600 pull away even further in the cases where the game is GPU limited.
Amazing results with the 3600, bought the chip in early 2021 and I am really happy with it. I was debating upgrading to a 5700x but I think ill just get AM5 in the future.

@@unholydonuts I did, got myself a Ryzen 5 7600, RTX 4070Ti, 32GB DDR5 5200Mhz, and a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus.
Thought about going AM4 but even the 5800X3D struggles running Starfield for example. The Ryzen 5 7600 isn't much faster but my build is now "future proof" without really costing more, yes the AM5 mobo's may be ~$100 more expensive but the 5800X3D is ~$300 while the 7600 is ~$200, and comes with a stock cooler and pre-applied thermal paste.
@@zoopa9988 any reason you didnt go with 7500f, though I guess 7600 is a steal in the first place. Strongly considering these while concerned about cheap b650 mobos being sufficient for future parts.

I have the R5 3600 paired with a 6600XT on a B550 motherboard and now know It is not worth upgrading the processor to the 5600 as the gains are so small.
I tend to play at 1440p on single player MMO's and it performs well over 60fps on high settings.
I'll be good for a few years to come !🙂
I remember how quickly I jumped on AM4 5600X as soon as it released. It was well worth it after using an FX8320 for a very long time - even if the price has dropped down now, I have no regrets for not waiting.
This piece pretty much mirrored my situation. I had a 3600, which was great, but I ended up upgrading to the 5700X for several reasons: a) better compatibility with fast RAM b) more cores for productivity c) it unlocked the full potential of my 6600XT. Overall, the 5700X was just a better match for my whole system, and I could then sell my 3600 with my older B450 system. I do agree with Steve here; if you have a 3600, you're not missing much for gaming, and especially if you have a B450 or older system, just stick with the better matched system overall
I have a 3600 rn and I play 1080p competitive settings on esports games r6s amd val and my 3600 isn't getting me 240 fps consistently on r6s I also have a 6600 xt should I get the 5600?
That fast ram compatibility argument is not valid. Limiting factor on both Zen2 and Zen3 is still inifinity fabric. If you are hitting 1900mhz IF on Zen2 then you have very little to gain from Zen3's allegedly better IMC. Even on Zen3, IF can barely clock past 1900mhz meaning for clocking rams past 3800mhz, you still have decouple IF and have to deal with increased latency on both.
@@Levent_Ergun In my circumstances, I had a 3200 cl16 kit that worked perfectly with the R53600. I then bought a 3600 cl18 kit (with RGB) and it refused to hold the XMP profile without crashing. As soon as I swapped out the cpu for the 5700X, I had zero issues with the new ram and XMP. That's why I say the new CPU is more compatible with the latest ram kits.
I did the same upgrade, mostly because I literally just got a new motherboard so I'm stuck with Zen 4 for a few years and I wanted to fully unlock the potential of my 3080. I was able to resell my 3600 and get the 5700x for $50 less than MSRP anyway.
@@garbuckle3000 Never use the XMP, Set your clocks manually. Not saying it won't still crash, But sometimes that actually makes it stable. Not only that, But you can adjust the clock a fraction to make it stable.. It may not be the exact clock you paid for, But a a few mhz won't make difference.

The B350M Mortar I bought back in July 2017 has allowed me to run a 1600 (+RX 580), 3600 (+GTX 1080) and now a 5600X (+RTX 3080). The upgrade has been significant every time. Couldn't be happier with my mobo of choice.
"same" mobo here, MSI B350 tomahawk; went from a 1600 to a 5600 last week... totally worth it!
IMO the play is to go with the second and fourth release whenever the platform is known to support 4 generations. Let the first generation bugs get worked out and maximize quality computing time that way.
Upgrade only when and as soon as you need/want to. Calculating performance per $ is stupid to me.
Thank you for making this video, I have been incredibly curious. I would also love to see a 5800X3D vs the 3600 video, specifically in 1440p. Gamer's Nexus doesn't test in 1440p and y'all don't always list the older CPUs, so I've been incredibly curious.

Upgraded from Ryzen 2600 to 5600 on my b450 tomahawk max mobo yesterday.. My PC is now frickin blazing! Using 8x2 gb RAM @ 3200Mhz and a Rx 5700 GPU.. planning to upgrade my GPU on the next radeon iteration (i hate the current gen ones)

Yup my 5700xt is not enough for me sadly i like being at 100+ fps in 1440p and the gpu is starting to struggle there.
I upgraded from a 3600X to a 5900X on a B450-F Gaming II from ASUS, even that worked fine.... BUT... if pushed to its max especially if you allow the CPU to really stretch to 180W wich it can without overclocking the VRM's on my board would literally melt away. I dont know the temps but I guess 90 - 110C+ in Cinebench so 3 months later I upgraded to a X570S Tomahawk Wifi Max, and now I got very powerful VRMs and cooling and I also notice a big improvement in response in many games. I run a 2060S so not a mega powerful GPU but about on par with the 6600XT in this test or maybe a bit slower. I get similar frame rates in Cyberpunk atleast. 60 - 100 fps depending on the area.
@@holdfast728 what motherboard do you have? I suggest looking at the manufacturers website for CPU support per BIOS update.
If you cant figure it out, just reply with motherboard name and current BIOS version i will look for you.

If you want an 8 core Zen 3 part for around 280 bucks the 5700X is the way to go, other options would be the 5600 if you want to pay less (still has around 3700X multi thread performance) or the 5800X3D if you want the fastest for gaming (imo it's a bit too expensive at 450 bucks)

I can confirm: upgrading from 2600 to 5600 is also worth it! Especially if you’re willing to resell your 2600 for roughly 50-100 USD.
Recently upgraded from a 2600 to a 5600 too. Most notable differences were in the 0.1% and 1% lows. Noticeable microstutters were gone after the upgrade

@@pdaangsakti21 basically much smoother frametimes and no microstutters, could easily notice it even though i have a 1660 super which is not very powerful. Example i guess be my valorant framerates essentially doubling
Sort of did this, but a little bit more extreme on both ends.
Went from a 1600-AF (slightly slower version of the Ryzen 5 2600) to a Ryzen 7 5800X. The difference is definitely VERY noticeable. FPS drops in Starcraft 2 have been greatly reduced and Lost Ark loads thing in a heck of a lot faster without stutters. If your power supply can handle it I definitely recommend looking at the 5800X on the used market.
Got the 5800X through facebook marketplace for just £200. Might have been able to sell my old 1600-AF for £70 or so, but using it in the homeserver instead (that using an ANCIENT P8400 Core 2 Duo, even the Ryzen 1600-AF can outperform that old piece of junk using only one of its 12 threads, the performance upgrade there is utterly insane).
The only downside to these AM4 motherboards being so versatile might be in the long run the motherboards will die, but the CPUs will survive which might make AM4 motherboards in the future very very expensive. The same happened to a lot of the older Intel CPUs, their performance is alright, the CPU prices are literally $10-40 but the motherboards are like $120-400. So who knows for someone looking to make a buck, stock up on AM4 motherboards and sell them in 10 years ;).

given the 5800X3D is often around 15% faster than regular Zen 3 I wonder if it can somewhat keep up with Zen 4 which is said to be around 15% better single core performance, I really hope the 5800X3D drops into the 300 bucks price territory once next gen CPUs release

One of the best upgrades I've done, the last one was from 1600 to 3600 so great generation changes, same 3600MHz RAM since day 1 of the R5 1600.

Going 3600MHz would've been quite unusual on Zen1. Pretty sure it was expensive if the timings were good, and few boards supported it.
He definitely didn't get 3600 stable. On my x370 MSI gaming pro carbon with 4 dimms I can't get past 3333 stable. It'll boot into windows at 3466 but bsod shortly after and i haven't been able to get that stable so i call BS.
@@TKIvanov Not lucky, 3 first kits of Corsair LPX ( different revisions, one supposedly B-die ) were not even stable at 2666MHz.
Swapped them to Ripjaws V CL16, managed 3000MHz until the last AGESA update where 3200MHz was possible.
R5 3600 and 3600MHz was obviously no issue though.

I built a new computer last year and purchased things I could get, the R 5 3600 based on reviews, a very cheap zotac GPU, but went for a Asus ROG Strix B550 - e. Last week I purchased a Saphire Nitro + 6700 and I am very very happy with my build. Also first build with AMD, I usually go with Intel and Nvidia. I based my build on reviews from the Hardware unboxed team and Gamers Nexus. I only play at 1080p. I'm really happy with the choice so far. Thanks guys for the time and effort you put in. I'm here in Australia too and find the prices insane, I'm also in rural NSW and have to get everthing posted to me so there is extra cost on top. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for this video. I've been having a tough time trying to decide if I want to upgrade my 3600, without needing to build a whole new PC for AM5. Still haven't really decided - and if I do, I'll go for the 5700X/5800X3D - but these results make more confident in the 3600's performance. I just don't know how long that'll last with upcoming games.
I had decided to get a 3080 to go with my 3600 for 1440p gaming and I'm glad to see it's perfectly well paired giving up very little in gaming. I may go to a 5800x3D after AM5 is launched but before AM4 goes EOL

Yeah at 1440p not a lot of games are CPU limited, I am mainly thinking about the 5800X3D because Escape from Tarkov can be tough for the CPU but it's more reasonable to wait for next gen CPUs to launch and hope the 5800X3D drops in price!
I went from 1600 -> 3600 -> 5600X. The upgrade to the 3600 was for speed, the upgrade to the 5600X had unexpected benefits, besides Clockspeed & IPC. Much easier to cool somehow.
The 3600 runs so crazily hot, up to 80°C with my 360 aio which is just insane

I had a 3600 for a year and a half. It was a 58-62C gaming temp average with a Hyper 212 Evo.
Now I have a 5900x with a Fuma 2 that runs even cooler lol.
There's got to be something wrong with your set up unless you're talking about Prime95 AVX temps.

Upgraded from a 3500X to a 5700X during the EOFY sale since the 5700X lowered to the 5600X's previous price. Thanks for including the 6600 XT, I have one myself and was curious of the raw results. In CPU heavy games like Stellaris and such its noticeably faster.
Thank you for following up on our request. I will probably get a 5XXX (debating between 5600X, 5800X3D or 5900X) to replace my 3600 which will go to the other rig replacing 1600AF. It's Win-Win with AMD AM4 support!
I'd like to see how the 3600 and 3700x compare in 2022. I've noticed a few games in other benchmarks where the 3700x with its 2 additional cores is finally pulling ahead by relevant margins.
I also wonder what frequency the tested CPUs are running at. Eg my 3700x runs at 4.4 GHz all-core at 1.26V, got quite lucky with my silicon, so I wonder where it falls on this graph.

@@jherr856 I dont bother overclocking the Ryzen, I just put PBO on and make sure the Motherboard decides how much power it gets, and when I changed the last bit a few days ago it went from pulling 125W in Cinebench to 180W and in Cyberpunk I see 4.4 Ghz all core with no manual adjustments, just let the CPU and motherboard (PBO2) do its job. I run a 5900X and a X570S Tomahawk Wifi Max... so very good VRM's to ensure that power get there! Ran a bB450 first, and it works fine, but the VRM's overheat if pushed hard and the CPU get choked out. All core overclock maaaaybe worth it if you do long heavy all core loads of some kind, for gaming, its silly. Mine boost to 4.95 Ghz now and I only run a 35$ Hyper 212 Black Edition cooler, an air cooler that came out 10+ years ago :D Temps hit about 75 - 80C in cinebench and about 65C in Cyberpunk wich is by far the most CPU demanding game I've ever seen. It just take all the cores and threads and devour them, I see 60% CPU usage at times with just a 2060S and 1080 at144 hz.
You bring this out 2 days after I upgraded from the 3600 to the 5600X.
Since my 4k panel died late last year, I got a cheap, HDR, high refresh panel that tops out at 1080p. SInce I'm now down to high refresh, 1080p, and since the 5600 and 5600X were on sale significantly cheaper recently, it made sense to get one for the extra fps. I thought so, anyway.
Have to say, the heat this new chip puts out is incredible with the stock cooler. The 3600 has the same exact cooler, I believe, and while the 5600X is often throttling itself to get to a lower temperature, what I didn't realise is that the 3600 seemed to be doing the same thing, it just wasn't as noticeable.
I would recommend to anyone getting a 5600X, consider getting a custom cooler. I might make the same recommendation to guys who have a 3600 or 3600X, too. I'll be doing so next month, I spent all my pennies this month already.
PS, some of the newer emulators such as Xenia (Xbox 360) and RPCS3 (Playstation 3) have benefitted a lot from the upgrade in my playtesting. Fight Night Champion running though RPCS 3 now runs flawlessly, whereas previously there were some quite nasty slowdowns and sound artifacting going on particularly during knockdown sequences. Red Dead Redemption has also been improved quite a bit, and is now what I would call 'playable' although still not perfect running on Xenia. Project Gotham 4 (also Xenia) improved quite a bit too. I haven't run them through an fps counter or anything, I haven't needed to, it's noticeable simply by feeling and looking.
Try a small undervolt on your cpu, Should be able to shave 10 degrees off temp and allow fans to run quieter, without affecting performance.

Yeah, I'm running a 6650XT on a B350 board, was looking for a 6700 so I didn't even research about the 8x on 6600/6650. Then I checked quite a few benchmarks and found out it's like 3~5fps difference, so it's negligible.

The 6 cores and 12 threads of the 3600 have definitely paid off in the long run and will most likely keep this CPU competitive for the next few years as well.
I might get it due to the cheaper ram match up plus it doesn't increase much in performance with a more midrange GPU like the RX 5600 XT.

Like Civ VI IA, Stellaris/ Paradox Interactive games, Football Manager and other games where the CPU actually dictate how much you are gonna WAIT until the game advance in time. I'm curious how do the VRMs on these older 300 series boards handle the higher end 5000 series chips, I'm sure a 5600 would be fine but what about the 105w models like 5800x/3d, 5900x or 5950x? Both in gaming and productivity
Worst am4 board with best zen3 processor video
300 series and 400 series VRMs are identical on more than half of the motherboards, particularly b350 b450 boards.
The power draw on 5000 series 105W processors follow the same algorithms as 3000 series 105W TDP and 2000 series 105W TDP processors.
You don't extreme overclock 16 core processors on Bx50 class motherboards generally no matter which generation and most of the time it's only worth overclocking 65W class processors on the lower end boards anyway.
I agree and wouldnt expect any serious overclocking, but it'd still be worth seeing the results as even at stock (let alone PBO) i'd imagine some of these boards might struggle with some core heavy work. Especially when many boards will claim "support" for these high end chips.
12 and 16 core are suited to the higher end 300 and 400 series with decent vrms. 6 and 8 cores run great in all but the worst asrock boards. They should still be fine for gaming, but actual heavy workloads on the 12 and 16 core chips will result in throttle and heat.

currently trying to diagnose my pseudo-prebuilt ryzen 1400 rig to see what is causing the huge bottlenecks that won't let me play any game at 1080 60fps with a 1050. I may have the opportunity to get a maybe dead 3600 for free, but I was thinking about buying a 5600 instead. turns out the 5600 wasn't as outrageously better as I thought it'd be, so I'll spend my budget on ram or leave this problem for later and get some backup hdd's. again, thank you for the testing!
The 1050 was never a gpu for gaming at 1080P and 60 FPS, not even at the time of its release, for that you need an RX 6600 or a 3060.
as someone who still is chuffed with his r5-1600 he got in may 2017, but getting into some unexpected money recentely, this test means a lot to me, as i'm lookning to make a computer dedicated to recording audio aswell as editing video material

Hmmm.... For the Ryzen 3000 series owner on 300 series board - it may (or may not) be worth go one step higher. And then it also comes down to if one is planning to upgrade to AM5 (or LGA1700) right away. Lot of factors to take into consideration. For sure, there is less need then the Ryzen 1000/2000 series owner.
Anyways, I talked about what I was thinking last time, and this weekend I did move to a 5800X in my old X370 because I'm pretty sure I can get a good few more years of happy service out of my main system. So I kicked the platform upgrade even further down the road, really let the prices of DDR5 settle down. This allowed me to upgrade several other AMD systems around the house as well.
I'm sure someone will ask - why 58000X instead of 5700X? Simply I found it on sale for $10 less then the street price of the 5700X. :-)

i wish you included more esports games on CPU reviews. Like valorant, csgo or overwatch. i remember overwatch was included in your benchmark at some point but understandably i guess its been removed. but still for me thats what im interested in when upgrading CPU since in a single player game im always Want to be GPU limited rather than CPU limited so the game looks better.
I think any of these CPUs can do 200fps on any of those games.

Interesting video. I tried to get the R5 3600, but the place I bought from didn't have any 3600, so I had to go with the 5600 with the 6600XT card. Very happy with it, so won't know about worth an upgrade or not. But this is more than good enough for me.

I just built a 5600x + 6800xt system (got the 5600x at $200 and the 6800xt on AMD’s website at msrp about six weeks ago) - very happy/impressed with the performance so far.
Thanks again for the ACC benchmark. But as it doesn't have a benchmark mode how are you running it - including the AI cars? As this adds a lot of load to the cpu with all the extra physics to deal with.
I saw quite a big difference going from 3500x (basically the 6 thread version of the 3600) to 5600x with large AI grids
I'd like to see a 3600 vs 3800x3d comparison, A lot of people entered or moved to the AM4 platform when the 3600 released and I feel a lot of us don't really want to buy a new motherboard and ram to use Zen 4 especially this soon, I'd much rather keep my still fresh ram and mobo and get arguably AMD's best final chip for this platform
If i upgrade my 3600 it will be 3800x3d everything else doesn't make sense! The ram might need a upgrade at some point as well because 16gig might not be enough soon...

For me who got 3600, I find that 5800x3D is not worth the upgrade now since I play on 1440 and most of the games I play is gpu bound or above 144fps anyway and my eyes ain't good enough to go beyond that(I got rtx3080). So the 5800x3D price right now is not for me but maybe next 3 years I will consider it compared to what's on the market at that time.
3rd gen of Zen4 may get cache and IPC buffed and even better ヾ( ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)ノ
@@willplaister9743 If you are playing at 1440 or 4k, you should expect nice improvement to the 1% lows but not to the average fps. If playing at 1080p, expect the 1% lows AND fps average to jump up nicely. The X3D should also remain relevant much longer than the non-3D models.

Great video as always. The only drawback with my R5 3600 rig I built about 2 years ago is it doesn't heat my room like my other builds Ha Ha. If you put your hand over it you barely feel the heat.

About a year ago I upgraded my 2700X to a 5600X, it was impressive enough (and due to Intel 11th Gen) I built a workstation with a 5950X as well. Definitely happy with my choice. Probably wont be upgrading too soon, but excited to see what Ryzen 7000 and Intel 13th Gen will bring to the table.

JUST as I suspected..... I think I'm gonna save up a few pennies and go for the 5800x3D ..... I don't think I'll be able to afford a new mobo, ram, AND cpu (plus I would like to get a new case and higher wattage psu) when they come out...mainly because I don't want to get a low end machine if I went with the am5 boards... so I would have to save even longer (i don't do credit cards, so I gotta save up) and that's gonna take a w hile to get what I REALLY want... so I'm basically future proof for a few years... (maybe 3) so I COULD just get the 5800x3D and max out the mid-range setup I have now..... maybe get another 16gb ram...... and make it more appealing to sell down the line..... MAYBE I should sell my RX580 8GB while I get get "reasonable" prices for it

Very informative. One take away I got from this is that it may well be worth upgrading a 1600 to a second hand 3600, especially if your budget is tight.
