    If you really want to be prepped for this, the best thing is to get a chest deep freeze and modify the thermostat to keep it just above freezing. Then you can get by for a long time on a charge. Also build an insulative foam cover around the unit and don't get into it more than once or twice a day.

    a fridge does not use power all the time. some may use a little. if it has all the electronics. but the compressor is what eats power. it runs a few minutes out of a hour. and if you turn the inverter off . you use no power. so just turn it on for 20-30 minutes every few hours. the food will likely never know it. and the light goes off with the door shut. so in a pinch. you can just remove the bulb. every lilbit helps. when you have limited power. or you can put the inverter in your car. and run an extension cord to the fridge. and lights . and just start the car every hour . depending on use.

    Power inverters destroy compressors! Kip, as an electronics enthusiest and youtube creator, you should know better than to broadcast this to thousands of people. A "modified sinewave" from a standard power inverter causes excessive heat in motor windings and this seriously degrades the motors winding insulation very quickly. Tell the people to use true sine wave inverters!

    Question, that inverter seems like a non sine-wave inverter, does that work with the motor of the fridge? I ask because those inverters are usually no good for a fan only for "passive" items such as a light bulb or a pc

    • @rabbitdrink
      @rabbitdrink 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      how did this not get an answer?
      anyway, it usually depends on the inverter. some put out a total square wave, others put out something a little closer to a sine wave. you cant really tell unless you test it (of course pure sine wave inverters will put out real sine waves, otherwise its false advertizing)
      some inverters will say how much noise is in the dirty wave. mine says "total harmonic distortion of 30.84% and maximum single harmonic of 27.72%". i dont quite know what those numbers are. i can assume that when you get closer to either 0% or 100%, you get closer to a sine wave or a square wave, but i dont know which way it goes.
      with dirtier waves, the motors will either just not work, or they will run noisier and hotter. noise is not good for a motor, but its ok in an emergency.
      the electronics might be confused by dirtier waves too. just try hooking up a clock or something.

    Great post.
    I recommend at least having a roll of duct tape near the fridge. When the power goes out. Make a nice tight seal around the edges of the fridge doors and freezer. And only open the fridge when needed. Best would be to remove all meat from the fridge section and cook it, cooking it will help it last. The meat in the freezer should remain there and remain frozen for some time, just don't open the freezer unless needing to. If you want to really help with keep the fridge cooled efficiently you can rig up those thick vinyl attic belts/straps that are used to selerate the freezer from the butcher station in grocery stores. So when you open the door, the eoosh affect of opening the door, which replaces the cold air with warmer air, will have less of an impact because of the vinyls barrier.

    220W is the output of the Inverter, not the draw from the battery, it will be higher as to get from 12v to 120v, you need a lot more current. At 18Ah, if it runs for an hour like he mentioned, it means the battery draw is closer to 18A. No way you are charging that battery in an hour, even if you rig it up to a car alternator.

      you are in an emergency probably just gonna use the car battery to do it and wont have enough time to buy foods for the power outage time and most the stock will be gone cause everyone else. the power is out for a lot longer than the hurricane/cyclone/tornado. and it will actually probably cost less for a battery over 40 cans of beans and spaghetti for you and your family and thats right no power cant cook should of made a sandwich with the food i had in the fridge.

    I have a question. If you get a 12v battery charger and connect it to the inverter on one outlet to charge the battery and the fridge on the other outlet at the same time. Will it keep the fridge going without having to turn off?

    • @richardlynch329
      @richardlynch329 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harold Correa The inverter wastes more power than it provides. Nothing is 100% efficient. Any device, TH-cam video or anything like you described that can go forever on it's own power isn't true. It's called perpetual energy/motion. My physics professor made sure we realized this just in case we would be in a situation where someone tries to sell us something like that.

  • @vuaeco
    @vuaeco 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lots of you mention solar panels to charge up the battery. But using solar panels in an outage is illegal in Florida (dictated by the Florida government and the monopolized power company). Now what?

  • @cawag98
    @cawag98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The idea behind the video title is good but:
    The light bulb change is unnecessary- the compressor and specifically the start up is the problem.
    750 watt inverters will usually have trouble starting a normally sized fridge
    A car battery is not designed for disconnected use- other than starting a car. The alternator is an integral part of using a car battery
    Get an appropriately sized fuse between the positive battery terminal and the inverter. "Why? That just wastes time!" If something goes wrong in the inverter or you draw too much current from the battery, your battery wires become like the filament in a lightbulb- fire.
    Use very thick and very short wires between the battery and inverter- the 110AC side can be longer - a standard heavy duty extension cord.
    advice videos are best when researched a bit.

    If you are going to be burning gas in your car to recharge this battery, why not just take the money for the battery, inverter and wattage/voltage monitor and buy a small portable generator that can power a fridge, chest freezer, a few lamps with LED bulbs and a hot plate for cooking? For a bit more, you could also power up your modem and computer.

  • @BeachsideHank

    This is a last resort people, advanced warning is given especially of a hurricane approach, often days before the event, the real trick is to add thermal mass to the freezer and refrigerator compartments, fill all available containers with water, freeze them and redistribute them in both compartments. We do that and can get at least 3 days of safe, unpowered storage before temps start to be a concern. Using the battery approach, just bump it back up by intervals, and in between, recharge the battery for the next round.

  • @charliesheehan4577
    @charliesheehan4577 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its a great idea, but the inverter used is modified sine wave. Which produces unclean voltage. If this were used on a regular basis, this would shorten the life of the fridge. The better solution is a pure sine wave inverter, they are a little pricey, but it produces a cleaner voltage and would be better on the fridge

    It would make more sense to connect the inventor to your car battery and occasionally run your car to keep the battery charged. Just know that doing this will shorten the life of the battery in your car, since car batteries don't handle being drained much more that 10-20% very well over time. A deep cycle battery with more amps would be better for this project as well.

    This is exactly what I did. I was in charge of everything for the storm except the generator. Well, the person in charge of the generator did nothing, so when I went to crank it up, it was not working. I still have not gotten it working. Anyway, I ripped a battery out of the lawn mower and hooked up my 500 Watt inverter. I removed the light totally and...no dice. So I tried my 1000 Watt one, and it worked....and then the storm did not even cause a brown out for us so all of it was not needed, haha.

  • @tcar02d
    @tcar02d 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah. Good premises. A better idea might be to use A 5 cu ft deep freeze. It draws about .5 amps on house current. So, about 6 amps 12v dc. And since there is no defrost cycle to destroy your battery. A wiser option.
    A 120 watt solar panel would keep you making ice. Trays of course.
    Hack would be to add a 60mm 12v fan into the freezer. Air flow would aid in making ice sooner.
    The car is a great idea for charging. In small amounts. I'm sure a car would idle for several full days on 3/4 tank.

    • @broadwayFan28
      @broadwayFan28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most cars do not charge enough at idle. Someone would need to be inside the car with foot on the pedal to get the rpms up. This also causes the car to use more fuel.
