    Disappointed because you guys seem great. The DIY part - really, the information we came here for - was glossed through, leaving plenty of questions and few, deep answers. Further, a parts list would've been great in the comments.

    I could have used that today. I ran my battery dead on the boat today, down river from my truck. Luckily two very nice people helped us. One who towed us to the dock, and another had a jump box. What I love about it the most is that memorial day wwekend we were out on the boat, and some people were broke down and we stopped on our race against the light to tow someone to safety. I don't expect was goes around comes around but love seeing it when it does.

    • @patricknorton
      @patricknorton 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bad idea, unless you get a licensed electrician to install a proper transfer switch for the circuits you want to power during the blackout. The transfer switch isolates those circuits from the utility lines/you connect your generator/power source to the transfer switch. This is important: 1) it prevents back feed from your generator from killing any electricians working to restore power 2) It keeps your your battery/generator from blowing up when the AC suddenly comes back on when the blackout is over. Good info here: powerequipment.honda.com/generators/connecting-a-generator-to-your-home#top

      Just get lights that work like emergency lights at an office. They each charge off of your outlet and go to battery power when AC power is gone. You can actually wire those emergency lights into your home, but don't put them on a switched line. My grandparents had simple handheld flashlights like that.

      1) Cost will very greatly w/ size/quality of battery. My local Costco stocks a deep cycle group 24 battery for $80, $20 for battery box, figure another $20-30 for terminals, wire, and cigar lighter sockets.

    Hah, I happen to have an extra battery and it's the same Super Start Extreme. I've been looking for ideas to use it as an independent power source in my trailer at work. I would much rather charge it occasionally than mess around with a dual battery system in my truck. I have a battery tender jr. too (unless you guys sourced this stuff from my garage) for my motorcycle and a 25A Stanley charger/starter. Mainly want to power a couple of LED lights inside the trailer, maybe a phone charger or two. Don't need the light that often, but the truck has to be hooked up and turned on, which it usually isn't at job sites.
    So I already bought a little 400W "Voltcube" inverter, I'll be interested to see how long it lasts between charges. I might make an enclosure for it all together like you guys had, and I have a bunch of banana plugs/jacks so might as well give it some of those. Also just ordered some cheap LED volt/ammeters from aliexpress so maybe I'll throw that on there. If I want to go really crazy, I'll make a sweet RGB sign for the trailer with an arduino, parallel another battery for capacity.
    I have the battery because I replaced it (unnecessarily) a few years ago when it wasn't holding a charge consistently at all. This is also why I have the Stanley charger, and am leery about messing with the battery system. Sometimes it would start fine for days or weeks, other times (especially winter) it would die overnight and have to be jumped every morning. But the new battery was doing the same about 6 months later, and it became a whole new can of worms. Apparently it's a pretty common issue with GM trucks, but not exactly a known cause or solution. I had very little mechanic skills, and even less electrical (I've been making a point to learn more since then). Got the Stanley, kept researching/trying things for another year+. Took it to 2 shops, they basically suggested replacing parts at random and wouldn't actually recommend anything.
    Finally narrowed it down and learned enough to buy a multimeter and find the parasitic drain on the radio fuses. Pulled the fuses out, has started fine for the last 2 years. Don't need no stinking radio, I have BT earbuds grafted to my head. _TL;DR: if you want to save yourself tons of money with your vehicle, buy a multimeter and an OBDII scanner and learn how to use them._ DMM was $20, OBDII was $35, and they pay for themselves many times over. I'm 90% certain about 75% of the money I've given to mechanics was a complete ripoff. That multimeter was what really sent me spiraling down the electronics rabbit hole.

Also if I really wanted too I could connect the deep cycle battery to my cars battery so if theres no sun or it's cloudy I can run the car and charge the deep cycle battery and I also have a powerstation that i can charge both ways as well. So with a full tank of gas, some spare gas, and with the sun, I basically have unlimited power. The gas is really just for convenience. The solar charger hold a charge using the sun as a power source so I could use stuff at night if I had too.

      Wen the power goes out the battery, which should have full strength due to the tender giving the battery a trickle charge continually when there is power, is used as needed. A battery stores electricity for wen it is needed and only depletes very slowly if nothing is drawing power from it.

      It's a Dorman brand ratcheting terminal crimper I picked up at a local auto store. Same thing is on Amazon for under $20: www.amazon.com/Dorman-86595-Ratcheting-Crimper/dp/B000CO7ING/ref=sr_1_9?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1401394179&sr=1-9&keywords=crimper

    Not very step by step crimp, seatbelt safety plug, A-Team drill time, put the cover on...works if you’re an electrician. Guess I’m stuck with the zombies. I’m guessing you meant to in case people screw up and die by shock, fire or both, they can’t hold it against you.

    I would use a Deep Cycle (Not Dual Purpose Marine) instead of a car battery.

      Yup, we mention that in the video.... I used this car batter 'cause it was sitting around the garage. Free is niiiiiice.

    Standard car battery vs AGM battery?

    • @patricknorton
      @patricknorton 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      AGM = Absorbed Glass Matt = Sealed Lead Acid battery where the acid is held in a fiberglass matt rather than floating loose inside the battery casing. Makes batteries spill proof, vibration resistant, better deep cycle life... tend to be more costly, esp in larger sizes. Great info here: batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/absorbent_glass_mat_agm

      patrick norton Holy shit you actually replied. I know AGM is better to use in cars but what about a application like this?
