They take a lot of work so i'm going to try and balance some shorter, more specific vids inbetween these in-depth breakdowns in the future.✌️

I Love the EMU sound. Everyone seems to think the classic 6400 has a better sound but I've really been loving the EMU e5000 Ultra. The craziest thing is when I take a sample from my Digitone - record it - then compare the pitching algorithms. The emu just adds all this depth and power in the low end. I remember people always talking about this as a reason for using analog gear, but I never really understood it. Now I do! Cheers bro, I really enjoy these breakdowns too. I think one every couple of vids will work great going forwards. I'm the same - I always find it quite rewarding to discover techniques on my own and then to have them validated by other people doing similar things. I find it helps reinforces things in my head :)
FX & modulation chains, you've opened up a whole world of possibilities for me. Moving outside the pads/sample ethic here, Renoise becomes a monster synth in it's own right really easily with single cycle waveforms with FX & mod chains. If I could only work out some sort of hack to effectively modulate the waveforms like a traditional synth (wavetable synths more than analogues) then that would open even more up. Great work as always sir... and frying bacon..!! 🤣
Hey Matt, Just saw your email - will respond in detail next week but have no fear, when you see my next vid I'm entirely dedicated to sticking in Renoise! (coming Sunday hopefully) I have also wondered about wavetable modulation etc. One thing I struggled with in my Reece bass video, is actually having the Loop oscillate in 'Free' mode rather than always being triggered. Secondly, Wavetable synthesis would certainly be possible if we could modulate the loop (start, end) position. You could potentially jump the loops to different parts of an audio clip with different waveforms. It's close but not really possible yet. Zensphere has some cool videos going over this stuff also! :)

Thanks so much mate! Its so important to finish ideas off and complete songs. It's actually a skill in itself and lots of people seem to forget this. I think the problem with always preseting short loops idea is that the people watching never take anything away beyond basic loop building techniques. I struggled with this for years as a beginner so really try now to teach things in a broader context of completing ideas off. A lot of it is about grinding through the tough stages of a track but also about knowing where to go next which you only learn if you actually push to finish tracks yourself! :)

Bukem used the following bits of kit this is from around '96 - Yamaha digital mixing desk, Atari for sequencing and midi, Akai samplers, Roland JV sound modules, some Roland synths (D50 etc) and that was about it really. How do I know this? 'Cos I've got his old mixing desk :) Nice vid by the way but we used to do this all a little differently with hardware back in the day, it sounded different as well, those hardware samplers have such a unique sound, each make is different Akai, Emu, Roland etc. All used to bring different flavours to the mix. Also mixing with a digital mixer the sound was different again, more open and less homogenised like todays DAW recording. Great times and I still use a lot of the gear and techniques today......

I love all that old Acid Rave too. Similar to the jungle back then it all has so much identity and character. There is so much to be learnt by looking back at all this old music. I'm not a great acid/techno producer, but I would definitly like to get into some more of that on my channel also! :)

It was essentially just a sine wave with a slight pitch attack to give it some punch. @@groovining yeah when I saw that I had to look it up and have a listen there was a female vocal sample in that chameleon track that was used in an old hardcore record I used to have but can't remember the name of now....Good tune though that Chameleon tune. So would you say mate that renoise for the oldskool jungle sound gives you more than say ableton or newer DAWs?
@@jamesdoyle4383 I would say that there are definitely workflow restrictions in Renoise that make you think more creatively and this impacts your sound. Like for me, I work entirely with samples in Renoise like I'm using an old hardware sampler. Everything I use is resampled in. For drum breaks as well there are so many cool things you can do. It's really incredible for drums. I think that old-school sound does have a lot to do with the processing and making everything nice and crunchy. So I guess you can do that in any DAW but most of all I find Renoise helps me to be creative without having too many options.
The Digitone is actually great for this stuff. For an FM synth, it can be really warm and fat. Gets really close to Juno, DX7 sounds and I love how flexible it is. With a Juno, you can only really get Juno sounds. With the Digitone you can do so much amazing stuff from drums to distorted DnB bass. It's my favourite Synth!

@@slipper-uk9878 Haha yes I felt like that doing it but mine had a broken PSU on arrival so it forced my hand. None of it is too hard. There were little things that were a bit tricky but I managed it with 0 electronics experience. I'm going to try to do a guide in the future about upgrading all the parts but give me a shout if you ever need me to walk you through it.
@@NateHook I just use the sample in via analogue ...got the emu set up on patch bay , so can connect synth, computer, or any source. I've never used SCSI.
I love Aphex Twin & would definitly be intrested in doing some of this stuff. The only thing is so many people have already attempted to break down his stuff. Gets a bit repetitive so I'd have to think of a new angle to take! :) ✌️🔊
@@groovining hey I've been listening to Luke Vibert's first three Plug EPs on repeat recently, and it's just an idea but do you think you'd be able to do a vid on one of those tracks? He makes great use of a small amount of samples while still writing in a continuous flow that is just magical. Would be neat to hear your thoughts!
@@Aqua_1014 I'd actually never heard of Luke Vibert before but he has super cool music. It's very raw and stripped back. Lots of just drums and bass. One thing is that everything is so dirty. If you using minimal samples you really need what you have to fill out the space. He is also doing lots of break layering and FXs. I'm definitely going to get back into that stuff in another vid soon!

I've never used one but everyone raves about the color/vintage sound of the ASR-10. I'm sure you could make great DnB tracks. I imagine its got quite a basic sequencer which could make things more difficult?

I guess I'll ignore that 1st line. One is correct, but the other two - not really. ill let you decide which...But I think that's the whole point of this channel, I was only just born when these records were being released. It's my retrospective take on the genre, the techniques and the music. You can certainly argue that this music captures the feeling of cultural change that was happening at that time. The birth of the hardware sampler really gave musical power to anyone who could afford an Akai s900 and off they went making dubplates. Before it was big studios controlling everything. I'm glad you're enjoying my channel anyways mate - the whole point of TH-cam is to make this accessible to anyone who wants to learn.✌

It was essentially just a sine wave with a slight pitch attack to give it some punch. @@groovining I love this era of music I started raving in 91 and was around when hardcore branched into jungle dnb and Intel etc. Bukem and good looking really were the masters of thar ambient Intel sound. Great vid BTW mate. I really need go get remoise loaded and learn more but I get hooked on ableton.

It must have made it such an exciting time to be raving! Renoise is wicked - from drums and breaks specifically, it's in a class of its own. I also love the creative box it puts you in!✌
@@groovining yeah when I saw that I had to look it up and have a listen there was a female vocal sample in that chameleon track that was used in an old hardcore record I used to have but can't remember the name of now....Good tune though that Chameleon tune. So would you say mate that renoise for the oldskool jungle sound gives you more than say ableton or newer DAWs?
@@jamesdoyle4383 I would say that there are definitely workflow restrictions in Renoise that make you think more creatively and this impacts your sound. Like for me, I work entirely with samples in Renoise like I'm using an old hardware sampler. Everything I use is resampled in.
For drum breaks as well there are so many cool things you can do. It's really incredible for drums. I think that old-school sound does have a lot to do with the processing and making everything nice and crunchy. So I guess you can do that in any DAW but most of all I find Renoise helps me to be creative without having too many options.

The Digitone is actually great for this stuff. For an FM synth, it can be really warm and fat. Gets really close to Juno, DX7 sounds and I love how flexible it is. With a Juno, you can only really get Juno sounds. With the Digitone you can do so much amazing stuff from drums to distorted DnB bass. It's my favourite Synth!

Thanks for the comment mate, I actually got it really recently and have just been upgrading all the parts. Silent Nocta Fan, New PSU, new LED Screen and finally just got ZULU SCSI up and running. Will definitly get into some vids in the future delving into it! ✌️

@@slipper-uk9878 Haha yes I felt like that doing it but mine had a broken PSU on arrival so it forced my hand. None of it is too hard. There were little things that were a bit tricky but I managed it with 0 electronics experience. I'm going to try to do a guide in the future about upgrading all the parts but give me a shout if you ever need me to walk you through it.
@@groovining how do you connect the EMU to your mac? I got one of these samplers from a friend, but the SCSI stuff is greek to me
@@NateHook I just use the sample in via analogue ...got the emu set up on patch bay , so can connect synth, computer, or any source. I've never used SCSI.

@@groovining hey I've been listening to Luke Vibert's first three Plug EPs on repeat recently, and it's just an idea but do you think you'd be able to do a vid on one of those tracks? He makes great use of a small amount of samples while still writing in a continuous flow that is just magical. Would be neat to hear your thoughts!
@@Aqua_1014 I'd actually never heard of Luke Vibert before but he has super cool music. It's very raw and stripped back. Lots of just drums and bass. One thing is that everything is so dirty. If you using minimal samples you really need what you have to fill out the space. He is also doing lots of break layering and FXs. I'm definitely going to get back into that stuff in another vid soon!

anyone mess around doing drum and bass with ensoniq samplers? i have an Ensoniq ASR -10 and am curious if anyone has made dnb tracks with one?
I've never used one but everyone raves about the color/vintage sound of the ASR-10. I'm sure you could make great DnB tracks. I imagine its got quite a basic sequencer which could make things more difficult?

One is correct, but the other two - not really. ill let you decide which...But I think that's the whole point of this channel, I was only just born when these records were being released. It's my retrospective take on the genre, the techniques and the music. You can certainly argue that this music captures the feeling of cultural change that was happening at that time. The birth of the hardware sampler really gave musical power to anyone who could afford an Akai s900 and off they went making dubplates. Before it was big studios controlling everything. I'm glad you're enjoying my channel anyways mate - the whole point of TH-cam is to make this accessible to anyone who wants to learn.✌
