Mastering the Keyboard Workflow in Renoise
This one has been long overdue & it feels great to revisit the first topic I ever posted about Renoise! This is all of my workflow tips on the most essential keyboard shortcuts in Renoise. Even though I think this topic is incredibly important, I know its not the most exciting for everyone (especially non renoise users) so I will be back next week with some jungle in Amigo to flip things up. 🚀
Thanks to my all Patreon for voting these video in. It’s a great way for me to get an idea of the types of video’s people are after!

    Excellent! The keyboard workflow is daunting at first but when you get the muscle memory down stuff can fly! I’m still discovering new things that make my life so much easier. Interestingly, a ton of Renoise workflow shortcuts work on excel, I find that’s helped me in both programs.

      Would also like to add Alt+T to select all in a pattern while on the pattern editor, easy to delete or transpose everything that way. A lot of my snares and kicks are in one big “collection” instrument (one for kick, one for snare), one sample per key. I just transpose up and down to cycle through samples while the rest of my tune plays till I hear one that works.

    Excellent video!!! Long time user of SCSI2SD (now Zulu SCSI) and Chickensys Translator. Discovered a lot of tricks along the way. I've reported at least 20 bugs (all related to hardware samplers) over the past few years all of which have been ironed out. Translator is worth the investment. Actually I have almost every hardware sampler, bought them all while they were cheap a decade+ ago. Glad I'm not the only one in this journey. I hope you grabbed (on time) the ASR-10 - that thing is a monster, it sounds much thicker than my S1000 and those effects inside are on another level (even now in 2024) absolutely magnificent.

    Excellent! Good to see other peoples workflow in Renoise. There are so many keyboard-ways to Rome :) . I started on protracker, moving to fasttracker myself so a lot of legacy shortcuts still get used (f9 to f10 for jumping around the pattern, space bar set to record for example). A good mention for newcomers would be checking out the "edit/preferences/keys" tab where you can check out all the shortcuts and custom assign them to your own liking if needed.

    Came back to this video to try out your resampling technique using Amigo now that 2.0 is live. For anyone using Ableton: I highly recommend the Slink LFO and Slink Filter max 4 live devices. They're very powerful for quickly generating automation movements by mapping the LFO slots to various values of Amigo as well as any FX plugins you put in the chain. Because they're based on multiplying sine waves, you can get a sweet spot between randomness and repetition I think sounds more human than pure random automation. If you place the slink filter before whatever delay fx you're using, it'll produce alien Krell style sounds by controlling what part of the frequency is delayed. Much love.

    • @groovining
      @groovining 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the Digitakt 2 is no bad actually with Digichains - th-cam.com/video/8GIYfdNk46g/w-d-xo.html I love Renoise the most in the box. Hardware I use some old samplers like the Akai S1000 and EMU e5000 ultra which are wicked but the digitakt still beats them for speed and flexibility. Just needs a bit of setting up before you chop :)

    I like trackers. Some of my favorite video game memories growing up featured tracker tunes -- nostalgia fuel, man. But I seek to record irl instruments -- I just can't give up guitars and my MIDI controller (therefore a conventional DAW). If not for those ambitions, I would totally give Renoise a try, heck I already got along okay with Buzzmachines a while back. I would probably sink deep into the genres of ambient DnB (PS1-era menu stuff was dope), Neurofunk, ambient breaks, demoscene-era chiptunes, etc. Alas... I'm not retired and have already bitten off more than I can chew.

    • @groovining
      @groovining 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yea Renoise isn't quite as flexible for recording live instruments as things like Logic are with comping etc. Maybe give Redux a go which is a VST you can use inside your DAW :)

    This is a brilliant video!!! I would honestly love to see another one similar to this. I remember I was searching for tips on how to make lush pads and so many videos were sending me to buy some expensive plugins or use some expensive DAW for their effects, so at some point I decided to follow one of them, but I just copied the technique. I took a basic mono saw wave and wanted to see how far I can get with just effects and it's crazy how much you can do with layering, resampling and even stock basic effects if you just keep repeating the process. I think if you can make lush sounds with even more basic sounds you would inspire even more people. Thanks for this.

    • @groovining
      @groovining 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks mate :) Yea there's a lot of more complicated techniques out there but achieving great results simply is often the best way to go. Another technique I love is layering multiple pad samples together which could be a great one for future vids. Big ups 😊✌️
